Use View Page Source to read the document sent to your browser, Elements (Chrome) or Page Inspector (Firefox) to examine the current DOM and CSS, Sources to browse files the page made available, and Network to see the requests that actually occurred. They answer different questions: the original source, the live rendered structure, the resource files, and the browser’s request history.
What each browser view actually shows
A modern page can have several different representations. The server sends an initial HTML document; scripts may then add, remove or rewrite elements; stylesheets determine appearance; and the browser requests images, fonts, scripts, JSON and other resources as the page loads. No single developer-tool view shows all of those layers at once.

| Question | Best view | What you can examine | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| What HTML document did the server deliver? | View Page Source | The source document, with syntax highlighting, line references and parse-error highlights in Firefox. | It is not a live view of later DOM changes, and Firefox says its error reporting covers parsing errors, not complete HTML validity. |
| What is on the page right now, and which style controls it? | Elements in Chrome or Page Inspector in Firefox | The current DOM tree, computed styles, matched CSS rules, box model and editable page content. | Edits made here are temporary and do not change the site’s files on its server. |
| Which files are available to inspect? | Sources (Chrome) | Resources grouped by page or domain, including loaded and deployed stylesheets, scripts and previewable images. | The list represents resources delivered to that browser session; it is not a directory listing of everything stored on the server. |
| What did the browser request, and what came back? | Network | Request URLs, resource types, headers, responses, initiators, status information and timing. | It records activity only while the developer tools are open, so you need to reload or repeat an action while recording. |
“View Source” and “Inspect Element” are therefore not interchangeable names for one feature. If JavaScript changes the page after it loads, use Elements or Page Inspector for the current result and Network to identify the requests that produced it. Use View Page Source when you specifically need the initial document.
Before you start: choose the evidence you need
Write down the question before opening a panel. That prevents a common mistake: searching the initial HTML for a class or data value that exists only after a script runs.

- Document source: Find an original title, meta tag, inline script, canonical element or server-rendered markup.
- Current structure and styling: Find the element’s DOM position, dimensions, inherited styles, responsive rules or the CSS declaration winning the cascade.
- Assets and files: Locate a stylesheet, JavaScript bundle, font or image that the page exposed to the browser.
- Requests and data: Determine whether a click fetched JSON, which endpoint responded, what status it returned, or which script initiated a request.
- General performance: Start with Lighthouse for broad load-performance guidance. The Network panel is valuable for request-level diagnosis, but Chrome’s documentation cautions that not every performance problem is a network problem.
Open the browser’s developer tools
Chrome
- Right-click the element you want to investigate and choose Inspect. DevTools opens with that node selected in Elements.
- Alternatively, open the browser menu, choose the developer-tools entry, and then select the required panel. A menu route is safer than relying on a shortcut that may vary by operating system or browser version.
- If DevTools opens docked in an inconvenient position, use its three-dot menu to choose a docking location. The panel layout can be changed without changing the page.
Firefox
- Right-click the target and choose Inspect to open Page Inspector.
- Firefox documents F12 or Ctrl+Shift+I on Windows and Linux, and Cmd+Option+I on macOS.
- If a shortcut is intercepted by the operating system or keyboard configuration, open the application menu and choose the developer-tools option instead.
Keep the tools open while you reload or interact with the page. In Chrome, the Network panel logs activity only while DevTools is open; opening it after a page has finished loading will not reconstruct the earlier requests.
Read the initial HTML with View Page Source
Open the source view
- In the page tab, open the context menu and choose View page source. You can also use the browser’s page-source command from its menu if the context menu is unavailable.
- Search the source for a known tag, attribute, text fragment or URL. Look for elements such as
<title>,<meta>,<link rel="stylesheet">,<script src="...">and<img src="...">. - Use line links or line numbers to return to a particular part of the document. Firefox presents syntax highlighting and can highlight locations associated with parsing errors.
- If you selected only part of the page before opening the command, Firefox can provide a selection-only source view. This is useful for isolating a fragment without scanning the whole document.
Interpret what you find
Source view is the document as delivered, not necessarily the page as it appears after scripts run. A server-rendered heading may be present in both source and the live DOM. A menu, product list or form row inserted after a request may exist only in the live DOM and in the response that supplied its data.
Firefox’s documentation makes a narrower promise about its warnings: “View Source only reports parsing errors, not HTML validity errors.” Treat those highlights as clues to malformed parsing, not as a complete standards-compliance audit. A document can parse without every accessibility, semantic or validity requirement being satisfied.

What source view cannot reveal
- Server-side templates, database queries, private configuration and application code that never reaches the browser.
- Changes made by JavaScript after the initial document was parsed.
- Files that were never requested in that session, even if the server stores them.
- Secrets that should never have been sent to a client. If a credential or private token appears in delivered source, treat it as exposed rather than assuming source view is hiding a safer copy.
Inspect the current DOM and CSS
Select the element
- Open DevTools and choose Elements in Chrome or Inspector/Page Inspector in Firefox.
- Use the element-picker icon, then move over the page and click the item. The corresponding node is highlighted in the DOM tree.
- Expand parent and child nodes to understand nesting. Check attributes such as
id,class,data-*, links and form names. - Use the DOM search field when you know a class, ID or text fragment. Searching the live tree is often more useful than searching initial source for a dynamically generated element.
Find the rule that controls appearance
With the node selected, inspect the styles pane. The browser shows matched selectors, inherited declarations, overridden declarations and computed values. Crossed-out properties lost to the cascade; an unchecked property may be disabled in the tool. Follow the selector back to its stylesheet by selecting the linked filename and line.
- Layout: Check the box model for content, padding, border and margin dimensions.
- Flexbox or grid: Look for the container’s display mode and the alignment, gap and sizing rules affecting the selected item.
- Responsive behavior: Resize the viewport or use device emulation, then watch which media-query rules become active.
- Computed value: Use computed styles when inheritance or multiple selectors make the winning value unclear.
Make a temporary experiment
Double-click a value or declaration to edit it, add a new property, or toggle a rule off. These changes exist only in your current tab. Refreshing normally removes them, and they do not alter the website’s source, database or visitors’ pages. Temporary edits are useful for testing whether a margin, color, font, width or display rule explains a visual problem before changing a local project.
Browse files in the Sources panel
Open a resource
- In Chrome DevTools, open Sources and select the Page view.
- Browse the tree grouped by page or domain. Expand folders and choose a stylesheet, script, font-related file or other resource.
- Click a file to open it in the editor. Image resources can be previewed when the browser provides an image view.
- Use the editor’s search to find a selector, function name, text string, source map reference or asset path.
The Page view can list loaded and deployed stylesheets, but do not interpret it as an inventory of every file on the site. A file may be absent because the page never requested it, because it is generated only after an interaction, because access was denied, or because the browser presents a bundled or transformed version.

Connect a file to the element using it
When a declaration appears in the Elements styles pane, select its linked filename. The Sources editor opens at the relevant line. For an image or font, the URL shown in the element or computed style can be compared with the corresponding request in Network. This cross-check distinguishes a reference in markup or CSS from a resource that successfully arrived.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRecord real requests in Network
Capture a clean page load
- Open DevTools and choose Network before reloading.
- Reload the page. The request list now records the activity produced by that load.
- Use the resource-type filters to narrow the list to documents, stylesheets, scripts, images, fonts, media or fetch/XHR requests.
- Select a request and inspect its headers, response, initiator and timing. The exact labels can vary slightly by browser version, but these views answer who requested it, what was sent, what came back and how long the transaction took.
Investigate an interaction
- Clear the existing log if you want an unambiguous before-and-after comparison, or note the current entries.
- Keep Network recording and perform one action, such as opening a menu, submitting a form or clicking a “load more” control.
- Identify the newly added request. Check its type, status, initiator and response payload.
- If the response is JSON, read the fields that the page may use to build new DOM nodes. Then return to Elements and locate the resulting nodes.
Chrome’s Network tutorial demonstrates this pattern with a button that causes a new JSON request. The same method works for autocomplete results, infinite scrolling, account panels and other interfaces that fetch data after the initial page load.
Understand request details
- Headers: Examine the requested URL, method, status, content type and response headers. Request headers can show cookies or authorization information; avoid sharing captured logs that contain them.
- Response: Shows the body returned for that request. It may be HTML, JSON, JavaScript, CSS, an image or another format.
- Initiator: Helps identify the script, parser action or redirect that caused the request.
- Timing: Breaks the transaction into stages such as queuing, connection, waiting and download. Timing describes that browser session; it is not a universal speed rating for the site.
Trace a page asset from markup to bytes
When you need to identify one image, stylesheet or script reliably, follow all three layers rather than trusting one URL.

- Start in Elements or Page Inspector. For an image, inspect
src, srcset, CSS background declarations or a relevant data attribute. For a stylesheet or script, inspect thehreforsrc. - Open the referenced file in Sources when it appears there. This lets you read the delivered file and locate related rules or code.
- Check Network to confirm whether the browser requested that URL, whether the response succeeded, and whether redirects or a different responsive image candidate were involved.
- For an asset that appears only after a click, repeat the interaction while Network is recording. A URL absent from the initial load may be entirely normal.
This process also explains apparent contradictions. A URL can be written in a stylesheet but never requested because the rule is not active. An image can be visible while its original HTML src is empty because JavaScript assigned it later. A script can be listed in source but fail in Network, leaving the expected DOM change absent.
Diagnose common inspection problems
“The element is not in View Source.”
Search the live Elements/Inspector tree. The element may have been inserted by JavaScript, returned by a later JSON request, or generated from a component template. Use Network while repeating the action that reveals it.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →“The source contains the element, but the page looks different.”
Inspect the current node and its computed styles. CSS, responsive media queries, browser defaults, user styles, or a script that changed attributes can alter the rendered result without changing the original source text.
Best Value
“A stylesheet or script is missing from Sources.”
Check Network for the actual request. The resource may load only after an interaction, be represented as a bundled file, be blocked, return an error, or be referenced but never requested in this session. Sources is a view of resources made available to the current browser, not the site’s server-side file browser.
“Network is empty.”
Open Network first, then reload. Chrome records while DevTools is open; opening the panel after loading does not fill in the earlier history. If the page is already open, reload and repeat the action you want to measure.
“The Network log has too much noise.”
Clear the log, reload, filter by type or search by part of the URL, then perform one interaction at a time. Select the initiator and response for the request that matters instead of trying to interpret every background request.
Recommended Free Tools
“The page is slow; should I start with Network?”
Not necessarily. Network can reveal a slow response, large transfer or unexpected request, but Chrome advises starting with Lighthouse for broad load-performance diagnosis because some performance problems are unrelated to network activity. Use Network after Lighthouse or when you have a specific request-level question.
“Can these tools show the site’s complete source code?”
No. They show what the browser received, rendered or requested. Server-side code, private files, database logic and unrequested assets remain outside the browser’s view. Inspection can establish client-side evidence; it cannot prove how the server generated that evidence.
Privacy and safety while inspecting
- Do not paste request headers, cookies, authorization values, personal form data or private API responses into a public issue or chat.
- Treat tokens, credentials and personal information visible in source or Network as sensitive. Mask them before saving a screenshot or HAR-style capture.
- Remember that edits in Elements and Sources are local experiments. They do not authorize changes to the site and do not test how the server will process modified data.
- Inspect only pages and accounts you are permitted to access. A visible client-side URL is not permission to bypass authentication or access controls.
A compact decision workflow
- Need the delivered HTML? Open View Page Source and search the document.
- Need the current page structure or CSS? Inspect the element in Elements or Page Inspector.
- Need to read a file? Open Sources, choose Page, and select the resource.
- Need proof that a resource or API call occurred? Open Network before reloading, then inspect the request and response.
- Need to explain a dynamic change? Record Network, perform the interaction, inspect the new response, and match it to the new DOM nodes.
- Need broad performance advice? Begin with Lighthouse, then use Network to investigate a specific request or transfer.
The reliable habit is to match the panel to the claim you want to make. Source supports what was delivered initially; Elements supports what the browser currently represents; Sources supports what files were exposed to the session; Network supports what was actually requested and returned.
