Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteInspect a refurbished Pixel 9 before you migrate data or discard its packaging. Photograph the unopened parcel and handset, match the model, storage, accessories and condition grade to your order, then test setup, identity, display, touch, fingerprint unlock, cameras, audio, charging and connectivity. Check coverage with the phone’s IMEI and read the seller’s return and warranty terms immediately. Google’s own Certified Refurbished promises apply only to that program; they do not automatically apply to a phone refurbished by another seller.
Start by preserving evidence and checking the order
Your return or claim rights are easiest to use when you can show exactly how the phone arrived. Keep the shipping carton, inner packaging, labels and every accessory until the inspection is complete. Before removing the handset, photograph all sides of the parcel, the seal, the shipping label and any crushed or punctured areas. Continue photographing the phone as received, before charging, inserting a SIM or applying a case. Use time-stamped photos or a short video so the condition and the date are clear.

Match the delivered configuration
Open the invoice or listing and write down the promised Pixel 9 model, storage capacity, colour, condition grade and included accessories. Compare those details with the box label and the phone itself. A different storage size, regional model, colour or accessory bundle is an order mismatch even if the handset powers on normally. Check whether the listing promised a charger, cable, SIM tool or other item; do not assume that every refurbished package contains the same contents.
Google says phones sold through its Certified Refurbished program arrive in new plastic-free packaging with a compatible charging cable. That is a promise of that Google program, not a universal requirement for independent refurbishers. A third-party seller may use different packaging or include a different cable, so judge the shipment against the seller’s written offer.

Inspect the outside before powering up
Work under a bright light and examine the display glass, rear panel, frame, camera covers, buttons, USB-C port and SIM tray. Look for a bent frame, gaps between panels, lifted glass, cracks, chips, deep dents, corrosion, liquid residue, packed debris or signs that the phone was opened poorly. Press each button once to check for an obviously loose or sunken feel, but do not force anything into a port or tray.
Minor scratches or other cosmetic marks can be consistent with the condition description of Google’s refurbished program. The relevant question is whether the visible wear matches the seller’s grade and photographs. Damage beyond the advertised grade, a cracked lens cover, a bent chassis or poor assembly should be documented as a mismatch or defect rather than dismissed as ordinary refurbished wear.
Boot the phone and verify its identity
Complete only enough setup to reach normal Android use
Turn the Pixel 9 on and follow the setup screens until you can open Settings and the standard apps. Connecting to Wi-Fi during setup is useful for diagnostics and updates. You do not need to transfer your personal data or sign in to every service before testing the hardware. If the phone requests the previous owner’s Google account after a reset, stop. That is an account-protection lock; do not search for a bypass or pay a stranger to remove it. Record the screen and contact the seller for a replacement or an authorised resolution.

Open Settings > About phone. Confirm that the model is the Pixel 9 expected in your order and that the storage shown by the system matches the listing. Note the IMEI and, where displayed, the serial number. Compare the IMEI with the box label, invoice or other device paperwork. A mismatch can indicate that the wrong handset was shipped or that packaging was reused. Save a screenshot or photograph of the About phone page for your records.

| Identity check | Where to check | What a match looks like | If it fails |
|---|---|---|---|
| Model | Settings > About phone and the order | Pixel 9 and the expected regional variant | Photograph the screen and listing; ask the seller to correct the mismatch |

Google’s warranty tools use an IMEI or serial number, but an IMEI lookup is not a promise that you will see the handset’s complete repair or refurbishment history. Treat the identifier as a way to establish eligibility and identity, not as a service record.
Test the display, touch layer and fingerprint reader
Check the panel at multiple brightness levels
Set the screen to a low brightness and then to a high brightness. View a nearly black image, a white page and several colours. Look for cracks, vertical or horizontal lines, flicker, a persistent tint, bright or dark spots, bands and areas that look noticeably uneven. A small reflection or temporary image change caused by an app is different from a mark that remains on every screen.
Map the entire touch surface
Open a drawing app or a blank note and draw slow lines from every edge to every other edge. Drag an icon across the top, bottom and corners. Try the keyboard at both sides of the screen. A line that breaks in the same place, an icon that cannot be dragged through a strip, missed key presses or touches that register away from your finger indicates a possible dead zone or calibration fault. Record the location and repeat the check after restarting so you can describe the behavior precisely.
Enroll and use fingerprint unlock
Enroll one finger in Settings, then lock and unlock the phone several times with a clean, dry finger. Test the reader with the phone resting on a table and while held normally. Failure to enroll, repeated false rejections or a reader that works only at one angle is worth reporting, especially when the listing promised fully tested biometrics.

Use Google’s diagnostics without treating them as a guarantee
Google says Pixel 9 and later phones can expose touch diagnostics through the device health and support experience. The Pixel Repair Diagnostics App can also be opened by connecting to the internet, opening the Phone app, dialing *#*#7287#*#* and following the prompts. Run the available touch and hardware checks and save any result screens. Diagnostics can reveal problems that are easy to miss, but they are not a guarantee that every intermittent display or touch fault will be detected.
Exercise the cameras, speakers, microphones and controls
Camera checks
Use the camera app rather than relying only on the preview during setup. Test each rear camera mode that the phone presents, the front camera, autofocus, flash and video recording. Photograph nearby text, a distant subject and an evenly lit wall. Review the files at full size for persistent blur, coloured artifacts, dark spots, a lens flare that appears in ordinary light or focus hunting. Record a short video, move the phone slowly and replay it to check for jumps or unusual noise. Inspect the camera glass again after testing; a hairline crack can be easier to see when light reflects across it.
Speakers and microphones
Play speech and music through the built-in speakers at low and high volume. Listen for rattling, buzzing, one side being silent or sound that cuts out when the phone is moved. Make a voice recording, play it back and speak from different distances. If possible, place a short call or use a voice-message app to test the microphone used during calls as well as the recording microphone. Keep the test brief and avoid exposing the phone to moisture.

Press the power button and both volume buttons repeatedly. Each press should register consistently without sticking. Connect a known-good USB-C cable and a suitable charger. Confirm that charging begins, remains stable when the cable is moved gently and does not repeatedly connect and disconnect. Inspect the port for lint, corrosion or a loose fit, but do not scrape it with metal. If the seller supplied a cable, test it, then repeat with another known-good cable to separate a handset problem from an accessory problem.

Google lists USB-C, stereo speakers, microphones, fingerprint unlock and front and rear cameras among Pixel 9 hardware features. Those features make the checks above appropriate, but a feature specification does not prove that a particular refurbished unit is working.
Verify Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and mobile compatibility
Connect to a reliable Wi-Fi network, browse several pages and move briefly away from the access point to check that the connection recovers. Pair a Bluetooth accessory such as headphones or a keyboard, play audio for several minutes and disconnect and reconnect it. Turn Wi-Fi and Bluetooth off and on once to check that the radios recover normally.
For cellular testing, use a suitable physical SIM or eSIM for the country and carrier where you will use the phone. Confirm that the phone registers on the network, can place a call, can send a text and can use mobile data. Test in a location with known coverage so a carrier outage is not mistaken for a handset fault. Do not assume every regional Pixel 9 has identical cellular bands or the same SIM arrangement; Google’s specifications show that configurations vary by region. The model number and the seller’s regional description therefore matter when judging compatibility.
Establish warranty coverage and the seller’s deadline
Check Google’s unit-specific eligibility
Use Google’s warranty-eligibility and repair pages with the Pixel 9 IMEI or serial number. The process may require a supported country and a signed-in account. Record the result, the stated coverage dates and the available repair route. Google explains that eligibility can depend on the warranty period, location, purchase channel and the phone’s condition. Accidental damage, unauthorised repair or modification and liquid exposure can affect coverage.

Google’s Certified Refurbished page describes a one-year limited warranty that is legally identical to the warranty for a new Pixel in the U.S. program described there. That term cannot be transferred automatically to an independent refurbisher, another country or a different sales channel. The Google result and the seller’s written warranty are separate things.
Read the seller’s return and claim terms now
Find the exact return period, defect-reporting method, warranty duration, exclusions, restocking rules and responsibility for return shipping in your order confirmation and seller documentation. The precise window is not established by Google’s general support pages, and it can differ by seller and country. Note the final date in your calendar. If the seller requires a claim number, photographs or a specific portal, follow that process before sending the phone anywhere.
| Record | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Order number and seller contact | Links your photos and claim to the transaction |
| Condition grade and included items | Shows whether wear or missing accessories match the offer |
| IMEI and serial number | Identifies the exact unit for Google and seller support |
| Google eligibility result | Shows the coverage and repair route available for this handset |
| Return-window end date | Prevents a valid defect claim from arriving late |
| Photos, videos and test notes | Documents the condition, symptom, date and repeatability |
Do not perform a water test
Pixel 9 hardware specifications describe IP68 dust and water protection for a phone when it leaves the factory. Google states: “Water resistance and dust resistance are not permanent conditions and will diminish or be lost over time due to normal wear and tear, device repair, disassembly, or damage.” A refurbished phone may have experienced wear, an impact or a repair that changed its seals. Its original rating cannot establish the condition of its current seals.

Do not put the handset under a tap, submerge it or deliberately splash it to prove the rating. Liquid damage can void warranty coverage. If you see moisture, corrosion or a liquid indicator during inspection, photograph it without adding more water and contact the seller.
What to do when a check fails
- Stop the test that could worsen the fault. Unplug a device that becomes hot, disconnect a cable that causes repeated charging cycles and do not continue a water or port experiment.
- Capture the symptom. Photograph cracks, gaps, marks, error messages or dead zones. Use a short video for flicker, intermittent touch, button failures, charging interruptions or account-lock screens. Include the date and the exact steps that reproduce the problem.
- Preserve the shipment. Keep the box, labels, accessories and any protective film. Do not disassemble the phone, replace parts or erase evidence before the seller responds.
- Contact the seller within its stated window. Describe the mismatch or defect, identify the IMEI and order number, attach the evidence and request the remedy offered by the terms: replacement, repair or refund. Ask who pays shipping and whether the seller will provide a label.
- Use Google support when appropriate. Google provides repair routes based on warranty and location. A Google repair option does not remove your right to pursue the seller for an item that did not match its listing.
- Delay self-repair while return rights remain open. Google recommends relevant technical experience for self-repair and provides genuine parts and repair information in supported countries. Opening the handset can change its condition and complicate a return or warranty claim.
How to compare several refurbished Pixel 9 offers
If you are choosing between units or sellers, compare the evidence and terms rather than relying on a refurbishment label alone. A label guarantees only what its issuer’s published terms promise.
| Comparison axis | Questions to answer before accepting an offer |
|---|---|
| Refurbishment source | Who inspected the phone, what parts policy is documented and what testing is described? |
| Cosmetic grade | Does the written grade explain acceptable marks, and does the delivered handset match it? |
| Return window | How many days are allowed, how must a defect be reported and who pays return shipping? |
| Coverage | What does the IMEI show through Google, and what separate seller warranty applies? |
| Accessories | Which cable, charger and other items are explicitly included? |
| Regional compatibility | Is the model intended for your country, carrier bands and SIM or eSIM setup? |
Perform the same arrival inspection on every unit. A lower price or a more attractive grade is not a substitute for an identifiable IMEI, usable return rights and a phone that passes the practical tests.
When the inspection is complete
Keep the inspection record with the order until the seller’s return period and any relevant warranty claim period have passed. Once the model, IMEI, account state, physical condition, display, touch, biometrics, cameras, audio, controls, charging and connections all match the offer, you can proceed with data transfer and normal setup. If any material point does not match, preserve the evidence and use the seller’s process before attempting repair.
