You cannot make a portfolio completely inflation-proof. The workable goal is to match part of your investments to the inflation risk in your future spending, while keeping enough liquid, diversified assets for emergencies and long-term growth. In the United States, Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities (TIPS) offer the most direct CPI-linked hedge; Series I Savings Bonds (I Bonds) also reset with inflation but impose a one-year lockup and annual purchase limit. Stocks, real estate, commodities and inflation-linked funds can diversify inflation risk, but none is a guaranteed hedge.
What “inflation-proof” really means
Inflation reduces what a dollar buys. A portfolio protects purchasing power only when its after-tax, after-fee return keeps pace with the inflation affecting your own expenses. That is a different objective from earning the highest nominal return.

No single security tracks every household’s cost of living. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) is a broad measure, while your personal inflation rate may be higher if you spend heavily on housing, health care, education or energy. A sensible portfolio therefore combines nominal assets, inflation-linked bonds and growth assets rather than relying on one product.
The appropriate mix depends on when you will spend the money, how much volatility you can tolerate, your tax situation and whether you can accept restrictions on withdrawals.

Start by defining the liability you need to hedge
Near-term spending and emergencies
Money needed for rent, bills, deductibles or an emergency should remain in genuinely liquid, low-volatility instruments. Do not put your emergency reserve into an asset that cannot be redeemed for a year or whose market value could fall when you need it.
Known future expenses
For a purchase or income need several years away, a bond whose maturity matches the spending date can reduce the risk of having to sell at an unfavorable time. TIPS can be useful when the future expense is expected to rise with broad inflation, but their market price can fluctuate before maturity.
Long-horizon purchasing power
Retirement savings and other distant goals need growth as well as inflation protection. Equities and other productive assets may help over long periods, but they can lose substantial value during a particular inflationary episode. Inflation-linked bonds can complement, not replace, a diversified growth allocation.

How TIPS work
TIPS are U.S. Treasury securities designed to protect principal against changes in the CPI. TreasuryDirect explains, “As the name implies, TIPS are set up to protect you against inflation.” The principal is adjusted with inflation and can also decline with deflation. At maturity, you receive the inflation-adjusted principal or the original principal, whichever is greater.

TIPS are issued in 5-, 10- and 30-year maturities. They pay a fixed interest rate every six months, but that rate is applied to the adjusted principal. If the principal rises, the dollar amount of the coupon rises; if the principal falls because of deflation, the coupon amount falls with it. The rate is fixed at auction and, according to TreasuryDirect, is never less than 0.125%.
Liquidity and interest-rate risk
You can sell a TIPS before maturity, but it is a marketable bond, not a guaranteed cash account. Its price may rise or fall as ordinary interest rates, real yields and inflation expectations change. Selling after rates rise can produce a loss even if the CPI adjustment is positive. Holding to maturity removes the need to sell, but it does not remove the opportunity cost of locking money into a particular yield.
Taxes and account location
TreasuryDirect reports annual TIPS principal adjustments on Form 1099-OID even before the bond matures or the adjustment is paid in cash. That potential “phantom income” makes account location and tax planning important. Review the current rules for your account type and jurisdiction with Treasury guidance or a qualified tax professional before buying.
When TIPS fit
- A tradable, government-backed bond exposure linked to a broad inflation index.
- A defined spending horizon that matches a 5-, 10- or 30-year maturity.
- An investor who accepts interim price movements and the tax-reporting implications.
I Bonds: inflation-linked savings with a lockup
How the composite rate is set
An I Bond’s composite rate combines a fixed rate, which remains with the bond for its life, and a semiannual inflation component based on the CPI-U. The rate resets every six months according to the Treasury schedule.

For bonds issued from May 1 through October 31, 2026, the U.S. Treasury lists a 4.26% composite rate, including a 0.90% fixed rate. The six-month CPI-U increase used in that calculation was 1.67%. That quoted rate applies only to the stated issue window; check the Treasury’s current rate before making a purchase.
Access rules
I Bonds cannot be cashed during the first year. If you redeem them before you have held them for five years, you forfeit the last three months of interest. They also have an annual purchase cap, so they are not a practical vehicle for moving an entire portfolio into inflation-linked securities.
When I Bonds fit
- Money that can remain inaccessible for at least 12 months.
- A conservative savings bucket where the owner values an inflation-linked rate and does not need tradable market liquidity.
- Investors who remain within the annual purchase limit and can tolerate the early-redemption rule.
I Bonds are bought through TreasuryDirect. They are savings bonds rather than exchange-traded securities, so you cannot sell them to another investor when you need cash.
TIPS or I Bonds? Compare the decision points
| Characteristic | TIPS | I Bonds |
|---|---|---|
| Inflation linkage | Principal adjusts with the CPI; coupon is a fixed rate applied to adjusted principal. | Composite rate combines a fixed rate and a semiannual CPI-U component. |
| Maturity or duration | 5-, 10- and 30-year maturities; market price changes with real interest rates and inflation expectations before maturity. | No tradable market maturity; savings-bond rules govern redemption. |
| Liquidity | Can be sold before maturity, but the sale price may be above or below what you paid. | Cannot be redeemed for the first year; redemption before five years costs three months of interest. |
| Principal floor | At maturity, repayment is the adjusted principal or original principal, whichever is greater; interim market value can be lower. | Not designed for market trading; value follows the bond’s accumulated interest and redemption rules. |
| Purchase limits | Purchased at Treasury auctions or through a brokerage; the applicable investment account and transaction rules determine access. | Annual purchase cap applies. |
| Fees | Direct Treasury purchases and secondary-market transactions can involve different transaction or brokerage costs; check the platform’s current schedule. | TreasuryDirect does not turn the bond into a tradable security; review current account rules for any applicable charges. |
| Tax reporting | Annual principal adjustments are reported on Form 1099-OID even before maturity or payment. | Tax treatment depends on current Treasury rules and the investor’s jurisdiction; verify before investing. |
| Best role | Tradable, CPI-linked exposure for a defined medium- or long-term portfolio allocation. | Inflation-linked savings for money that can stay locked up for at least one year. |
What other assets can—and cannot—do
Equities
Companies can sometimes raise prices, grow earnings and distribute dividends, giving stocks long-run purchasing-power potential. That relationship is uneven: high inflation can compress valuations, raise financing costs and weaken consumer demand. Stocks are a growth diversifier, not a guaranteed short-term inflation hedge.

Real estate
Property rents and replacement costs may rise with inflation, but real estate is exposed to interest rates, local supply, vacancies, insurance, maintenance and taxes. Direct property is illiquid and concentrated; real-estate funds can lose value when borrowing costs rise.
Commodities
Commodities can respond quickly to supply shocks and energy or food inflation, but they produce no intrinsic cash flow and can be extremely volatile. Futures-based funds also face roll costs and tracking differences. Treat them as a limited diversifier, not a complete portfolio solution.
Inflation-linked bond funds
A fund holding TIPS can provide broad exposure and automatic reinvestment, but its share price still moves with duration and real-rate changes. A fund does not promise that your principal will be returned on a particular date, because the fund continuously buys and sells bonds.

How much of a portfolio should hedge inflation?
There is no authoritative universal percentage. The right allocation follows the size and timing of the liability, your emergency reserves, tax status, liquidity needs and tolerance for market losses.
Best Value
- List inflation-sensitive spending. Separate expenses due within one year, planned expenses in later years and discretionary spending. Note which costs are fixed, variable or linked to a specific index.
- Fund liquid reserves first. Keep emergency money outside instruments with a one-year lockup or meaningful market-price risk.
- Match duration to the spending date. Consider individual TIPS maturities when a defined date matters. Use a ladder rather than forcing one bond to cover every future expense.
- Choose the liquidity you actually need. Select I Bonds only for money that can remain inaccessible for at least a year. Choose TIPS when the ability to sell is worth accepting price volatility.
- Set a risk budget. Decide how much temporary loss you can tolerate in each bucket. Do not count a volatile commodity or property position as a cash reserve merely because its long-run story sounds inflationary.
- Check taxes and account placement. Include TIPS’ annual 1099-OID reporting and the rules for the account in which each holding will sit.
- Rebalance by rule. Review the allocation on a schedule or when a holding drifts materially from its intended role, rather than reacting to every inflation headline.
A practical implementation sequence
- Write the purpose on each account. Label money as emergency cash, a known future liability, retirement income or long-term growth.
- Build the emergency layer. Use liquid instruments appropriate for your banking and tax circumstances before purchasing I Bonds or taking duration risk with TIPS.
- Price the inflation hedge. Compare current TIPS real yields, I Bond rates for the relevant issue period, maturity dates, purchase limits and your expected holding period.
- Buy through the correct channel. I Bonds are purchased through TreasuryDirect. TIPS can be obtained through Treasury auctions or a brokerage, where the trading and custody terms differ.
- Document the exit plan. For each holding, record the earliest penalty-free redemption date, intended maturity, tax reporting and what event would justify selling early.
- Keep growth diversified. Retain a suitable mix of productive assets rather than attempting to replace all nominal bonds or equities with one inflation-linked instrument.
- Review annually. Update spending assumptions, tax circumstances, rates, maturity gaps and concentration. A rate quoted for one I Bond issue window should not be treated as permanent.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Calling a current rate a permanent return
The 4.26% I Bond composite rate applies to May–October 2026 issues only. Inflation components reset, and the fixed component is tied to the issue. Correct the mistake by checking the Treasury’s current rate and identifying which component applies to a bond you already own.
Ignoring the first-year lockup
An I Bond is unsuitable for a bill that may arrive next month or for an emergency fund. Keep a separate liquid reserve and use I Bonds only after the one-year access constraint fits your plan.
Assuming TIPS cannot lose money
The maturity principal floor does not prevent an interim market loss. If you may sell before maturity, estimate the effect of changing real yields and inflation expectations; if you cannot tolerate that uncertainty, do not treat a marketable TIPS position as cash.
Overconcentrating in one “real asset”
Property, commodities and stocks have different inflation sensitivities and failure modes. Concentrating in one of them can add leverage, liquidity or sector risk instead of solving the purchasing-power problem.
Forgetting taxes
Annual TIPS principal reporting can create taxable income before cash is received. Review account location and reporting requirements in advance rather than discovering them at tax filing time.
Using an arbitrary hedge percentage
A fixed allocation copied from another investor may not match your spending dates, reserve needs or risk tolerance. Derive the amount from liabilities and then test whether you can stay invested through adverse markets.
How to monitor the plan
- Track the inflation measure relevant to each holding, including CPI-U for I Bonds and the CPI adjustment for TIPS.
- Record maturity dates, redemption eligibility and any penalties in a calendar.
- Review real yields, duration and market value before selling TIPS.
- Check annual purchase-limit usage for I Bonds.
- Reconcile tax forms, especially Form 1099-OID for TIPS principal adjustments.
- Rebalance after a major change in spending, employment, tax status or time horizon—not solely because a monthly inflation report changed.
The bottom line
Inflation-proofing is a portfolio-design exercise, not a hunt for one perfect asset. Keep emergency money liquid, use TIPS for tradable CPI-linked exposure that matches a defined horizon, use I Bonds only for funds that can remain locked up for at least a year, and treat equities, real estate, commodities and funds as diversifiers with distinct risks. Revisit the mix as your liabilities, tax situation and the Treasury’s current rates change.
