There is no single shiny-Pokémon rate or hunting method that applies to every game. Your best odds depend on the title you are playing: Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon use SOS chaining, Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee! use Catch Combos with Lures, and Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet feature special mass-outbreak events when those events are scheduled. In games that offer it, completing the Pokédex can unlock the Shiny Charm, which improves shiny encounter chances.

What “increasing your chances” actually means
A shiny is a rare alternate-color Pokémon that can appear when the game generates an encounter. You do not improve the odds by throwing a particular type of Poké Ball or by catching a shiny in a special way; the useful bonuses act before or during encounter generation. Once a shiny appears, catching it is a separate task, so prepare enough Poké Balls and a way to avoid accidentally ending the encounter.

#1 Best Overall
| Game | Primary method covered by official guidance | Important setup | What the evidence establishes | Availability |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pokémon Ultra Sun / Ultra Moon | SOS chaining | Build a longer SOS chain; complete the Alola Pokédex for the Shiny Charm | Longer chains increase shiny encounter chances. The approximate normal rate without the charm is 1 in 4,000. | Ongoing in the game |
| Pokémon Let’s Go, Pikachu! / Let’s Go, Eevee! | Catch Combo | Catch the same species repeatedly; use a Lure and the Shiny Charm when available | A Catch Combo above 30 maximizes the potential bonuses described by Pokémon.com. A large combo still does not guarantee a quick shiny. | Ongoing in the game |
| Pokémon Scarlet / Violet | Special mass outbreaks | Install current update data and receive the latest Poké Portal News when an event requires it | Official event notices say special outbreaks can make shinies more likely. No comprehensive current odds table is established here. | Event-dependent; scheduled events end |
These figures are not interchangeable. A “1 in 4,000” baseline from Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon is not a franchise-wide rate, and the Catch Combo threshold in Let’s Go is not a rule for other games.
Before hunting: identify the exact game and objective
Look at the title on your system and decide whether you are hunting one particular species or any shiny you encounter. The answer changes your preparation. A target-species hunt requires you to stay in an area where that species can appear and to preserve the relevant chain or combo. A general hunt gives you more freedom to move, but you still need to follow that game’s bonus method.
Confirm the title’s mechanics
- Ultra Sun or Ultra Moon: use SOS chaining and consider the Shiny Charm after completing the Alola Pokédex.
- Let’s Go, Pikachu! or Let’s Go, Eevee!: build a Catch Combo for one species, then add a Lure and the Shiny Charm if you have them.
- Scarlet or Violet: check current official Poké Portal News and event notices before relying on a special outbreak.
Separate encounter odds from capture odds
Shiny methods affect how often a shiny is generated. They do not guarantee that your first throw will catch it. Carry an appropriate supply of Poké Balls, keep your party ready, and avoid ending a chain or combo while trying to restock. The exact capture tools and battle options differ by game, so use the game’s normal catching controls once the shiny is visible.

Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon: build an SOS chain
For Pokémon Ultra Sun and Pokémon Ultra Moon, Pokémon.com recommends SOS chaining. In an SOS battle, you continue encounters as the game calls additional Pokémon. The official guidance says that building a longer chain increases the chance that a shiny will appear.
Know the baseline
Pokémon.com gives an approximate normal encounter rate of about 4,000 to 1 without the Shiny Charm in these two games. This is an approximate figure for a normal encounter in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, not a guaranteed result after 4,000 attempts and not a rate for other Pokémon games.
Unlock the Shiny Charm when possible
The official strategy recommends completing the Alola Pokédex to receive the Shiny Charm. The prerequisite is therefore more substantial than simply reaching a particular area: you must complete the relevant Pokédex for the game. Because Pokédex requirements and item availability are title-specific, check your in-game Pokédex and the game’s own progression rather than assuming a charm from another title transfers.
How to run the hunt
- Choose a target and location. Start in an area where the species you want can appear through the normal encounter system.
- Start an SOS encounter. Follow the game’s battle controls to trigger the SOS process for the encountered Pokémon.
- Continue the chain. Keep the chain going through successive SOS calls. The official recommendation is to build a longer chain because chain length raises the chance of a shiny encounter.
- Watch every new Pokémon. Check each newly called Pokémon for its alternate coloration before defeating or moving on from it.
- Catch the shiny when it appears. Once you identify one, end the battle in the normal way that leaves the shiny available to catch, then use your prepared catching supplies.
The source guidance establishes the direction of the benefit—longer SOS chains improve the chance—but does not provide a universal chain-length-to-odds table in the material used here. Do not promise a particular percentage for a chosen chain length.
Protect the chain
An SOS hunt rewards consistency. Avoid actions that end the battle or move you away from the encounter before you have checked the new Pokémon. If you need to pause, save only where the game’s normal rules allow it and note that a reset may undo progress. Keep your attention on the called Pokémon so that a shiny is not defeated by mistake.
Rank #3
Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee!: use a Catch Combo
In the Let’s Go games, the official method is to catch the same species repeatedly to build a Catch Combo. Pokémon.com says that a Catch Combo of more than 30 maximizes the potential bonuses relevant to shiny hunting. It also recommends using Lures and the Shiny Charm to increase your chances further.
Build the combo correctly
- Select the species. Begin catching the same species you intend to hunt. Switching to a different species does not serve the same target-species combo.
- Keep catching that species. Continue the sequence rather than alternating among species. The combo is the resource you are building.
- Pass the threshold. Continue until the combo is above 30, the threshold Pokémon.com describes as maximizing the potential bonuses.
- Apply the optional boosts. Use a Lure and the Shiny Charm if you have them. They are additional tools, not substitutes for maintaining the combo.
- Inspect spawns carefully. Watch the Pokémon appearing around you for the species’ shiny coloration. A shiny can still take time even after the combo and boosts are in place.
What a large combo does—and does not—promise
Pokémon.com explicitly cautions: “But you shouldn’t expect to find a Shiny Pokémon quickly even with a large Catch Combo!” Treat the combo as an odds improvement, not a timer. Passing 30 does not mean the next spawn, next catch or next several minutes must contain a shiny.
Reduce the chance of breaking your setup
- Stay focused on the same species while building and using the combo.
- Plan your Poké Ball supply before you begin so you do not have to interrupt the sequence unexpectedly.
- Use a Lure after you are ready to hunt and monitor its remaining effect according to the game’s on-screen indicators.
- When a shiny appears, identify it by its visible coloration before throwing. The goal is to catch that individual without abandoning the encounter area unnecessarily.
The official material does not provide a complete numeric odds table for every combination of Catch Combo, Lure and Shiny Charm. Avoid calculators or claims that present an unsupported exact percentage as an official rate.
Scarlet and Violet: watch for special mass-outbreak events
Official notices for Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet state that special mass outbreaks can make shiny Pokémon more likely to appear. This is an event-based opportunity rather than a permanently active bonus.
Understand the 2025 event reference
The cited official notice was published on July 22, 2025 and covered scheduled events running from July through September 2025. Those dates have passed. It is inaccurate to tell readers that this particular event is active now.
Check the current requirements before an event
- Read the current official notice. Confirm the event’s start and end times, eligible species and any regional or version restrictions.
- Update the game. The cited notice required the latest game update data.
- Receive the latest Poké Portal News. The same notice said players needed the latest Poké Portal News to participate.
- Travel to the event area during the listed window. Event outbreaks are limited by their published schedule.
- Verify the outbreak in-game. Do not assume an old event remains available after its end date.
The available official material does not establish a comprehensive current table of standard Scarlet and Violet shiny rates or a complete, title-wide hunting walkthrough. For that reason, this guide does not assign a universal percentage to ordinary encounters or claim that every outbreak has the same bonus.
Do not confuse an event with a permanent method
A special outbreak can be an excellent opportunity while it is live, but its increased likelihood ends with the event schedule. If no current notice lists an outbreak, use only methods and bonuses that your own version of the game explicitly provides; do not treat the 2025 schedule as an ongoing feature.

Choosing the most practical approach
Your best method is the one supported by the game you own and that you can maintain without repeatedly breaking the setup. Use this decision framework:
| If you play… | Start with… | Main preparation | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ultra Sun or Ultra Moon | An SOS chain | Target location, battle supplies and, if possible, the completed Alola Pokédex for the Shiny Charm | Ending or disrupting the chain before checking new SOS Pokémon |
| Let’s Go, Pikachu! or Let’s Go, Eevee! | A same-species Catch Combo | More than 30 catches, plus a Lure and Shiny Charm when available | Breaking the combo or running out of supplies while maintaining it |
| Scarlet or Violet | A currently announced special mass outbreak | Current update data, latest Poké Portal News and the event schedule | Arriving after the event window or relying on an expired notice |
How to set realistic expectations
A rate is not a deadline
“About 4,000 to 1” describes the approximate chance for one normal encounter without the Shiny Charm in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. It does not mean a shiny must appear by encounter 4,000. Each encounter is a new opportunity, and a streak of non-shiny encounters does not force the next one to be shiny.
Bonuses are game-specific
SOS chain length, Catch Combo size, Lures, Shiny Charms and event outbreaks are not interchangeable labels for one universal system. Even when two games use the same item name, the supported effect and prerequisites can differ. Quote the rate or threshold together with its game whenever you record your plan.
Prepare for a long session
- Charge the system and choose a comfortable stopping point.
- Carry enough catching supplies to avoid a forced interruption.
- Keep the target species and hunting area written down.
- Check event dates and update requirements before starting an event hunt.
- Stop periodically so fatigue does not cause you to miss a different coloration or accidentally end your chain.
Troubleshooting common problems
“I used a method from another game and saw no improvement.”
Recheck the title first. SOS chaining is the official method discussed for Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon; Catch Combos apply to the two Let’s Go games; special mass outbreaks are event opportunities in Scarlet and Violet. A method from one group should not be assumed to work in another.

Neither a long SOS chain nor a Catch Combo above 30 guarantees a quick result. Continue only if your chain or combo remains intact, and verify that you are still using the intended target method.
“The event outbreak is not appearing.”
Check the official notice’s dates first. For the cited Scarlet and Violet event, the scheduled July–September 2025 window has ended. If a current event is listed, confirm that the game has the latest update data and Poké Portal News required by that notice.
“I cannot find the Shiny Charm.”
The charm is not automatically available in every game at the same point. In the official guidance covered here, completing the Alola Pokédex is the recommendation for Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. Check the Pokédex and progression requirements for your exact title rather than using instructions from another version.
A concise hunting checklist
- Write down the exact Pokémon game and target species.
- Identify that game’s supported shiny method.
- Complete the relevant Pokédex requirement if that title awards a Shiny Charm for doing so.
- For Ultra Sun or Ultra Moon, build and protect an SOS chain.
- For Let’s Go, catch the same species until the Catch Combo is above 30, then use a Lure and Shiny Charm if available.
- For Scarlet or Violet, verify a current special-outbreak notice, update data and Poké Portal News before traveling.
- Keep catching supplies ready and inspect every relevant encounter carefully.
- Record the method and game alongside any rate or threshold so you do not apply it elsewhere.
The Bottom Line
Use the method made for your game: SOS chains in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, a same-species Catch Combo above 30 plus available Lures and the Shiny Charm in Let’s Go, or a currently scheduled special mass outbreak in Scarlet and Violet. None guarantees a fast shiny, and no single odds figure applies to the whole Pokémon series.
