The most reliable way to improve a TV picture is to start with the right picture mode, then adjust sharpness and motion processing for the content you actually watch. Choose Filmmaker Mode or Movie/Cinema as a neutral starting point, keep sharpness near your set’s own neutral baseline, and add only as much motion smoothing as you can watch without halos, glitches, or a soap-opera look. Make changes separately for SDR and HDR, and use Game mode when response time matters.
There is no universal “best” number for sharpness or motion. Menus, scales, and processing behavior vary by model, so the useful method is controlled comparison: one familiar scene, one setting at a time, with the ability to undo every change.

A quick setup that works on most TVs
- Open the TV’s picture settings while playing the type of content you want to improve.
- Select Filmmaker Mode if available. If its image is too dim or it locks controls you need, try Movie or Cinema mode.
- Disable or minimize extra contrast, dynamic color, and edge-enhancement features before judging detail.
- Set sharpness to the set’s neutral-looking baseline; do not assume the largest or smallest number is correct.
- Set motion smoothing to Off for an original film look, or to the lowest level that helps sports and live video without visible artifacts.
- Repeat the process while playing HDR content. TVs commonly save a separate HDR profile.
- Use Game mode for consoles or PCs when input response is more important than maximum processing.
- Compare the result with the original setting on the same scene, then keep only changes that preserve detail and look natural in your room.
These steps follow the priorities in RTINGS’ general calibration guide, updated April 22, 2026: picture mode normally has the largest effect, while individual controls require model-specific judgment. Read the guide.
What picture modes actually change
A mode is a bundle of settings, not merely a brightness switch. It can alter color temperature, white balance, contrast behavior, gamma, local-dimming behavior, and motion processing. Changing modes can therefore produce a larger difference than moving a single slider.

| Mode | Best starting use | What to expect | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Filmmaker Mode | Movies and series when you want the creator’s intended cadence and restrained processing | Designed to disable many artificial picture and motion enhancements | May look less bright in a showroom and may restrict controls on some models |
| Movie or Cinema | Films, television, and general viewing when Filmmaker Mode is unavailable or unsuitable | Usually warmer and less aggressive than vivid presets | Exact processing differs by manufacturer; accuracy is not guaranteed |
| Standard or Custom | Everyday viewing when you want a neutral image but need more control | Often provides broader access to individual settings | May retain extra processing that you must turn down yourself |
| Vivid, Dynamic, or similar | Bright rooms or short demonstrations where maximum impact matters | Higher brightness, contrast, and color emphasis | Can clip highlights, exaggerate colors, and sharpen edges unnaturally |
| Game | Console and PC gaming | Reduces processing to lower input delay | Some motion, dimming, and image controls may change or become unavailable |
Filmmaker Mode was introduced by the UHD Alliance in 2019. Its purpose is a useful starting point, not a promise that every television will be perfectly accurate. Panel characteristics, firmware, room lighting, and the manufacturer’s implementation still matter.
When Movie or Cinema is the better choice
Use Movie or Cinema when Filmmaker Mode looks too dark for your room, disables a control you genuinely need, or produces a presentation you dislike. Select the least processed version that still lets you see shadow detail and highlights comfortably. Avoid choosing a mode solely because its preview thumbnail looks brighter.
Prepare before changing controls
Use a familiar, high-quality source
Streaming compression, a poor cable signal, or a low-resolution video can make any mode look bad. Use a disc, a high-bitrate stream, or a game you know well. Pick a scene containing faces, fine text or fabric, dark shadows, bright highlights, and camera movement. A single familiar reference is more useful than jumping between unrelated clips.

Write down the original value or use the TV’s reset command before experimenting. Change one control, watch the same passage again, and decide whether detail or natural motion improved. If a change removes texture, clips a highlight, crushes a shadow, or adds an obvious artifact, undo it immediately.
Account for room lighting
A bright room can make a restrained mode seem dull, while a dark room can make the same mode tiring. Adjust the TV’s overall light output or backlight control for the room, but do not treat that control as a substitute for black level. Brightness and black-level controls affect different parts of the signal; raising every slider can lift blacks and make the image gray.
Separate SDR and HDR
Many TVs store separate picture memories for standard dynamic range (SDR) and high dynamic range (HDR). Make adjustments while the desired format is active. A setting that looks right in an SDR broadcast may be too bright, too dim, or otherwise unsuitable when HDR starts, and copying values between formats can produce a misleading result.

How to set sharpness without halos
The sharpness control usually adds edge enhancement rather than recovering detail that is absent from the source. Excessive enhancement creates a bright or dark outline around letters, hair, buildings, and high-contrast objects. It can also make film grain and compression noise more conspicuous.
Why one sharpness number cannot be universal
Manufacturers use different scales, algorithms, and neutral points. On one TV, zero may be neutral; on another, a middle value may be neutral, and the visible effect may begin only above or below that point. Even two sizes of the same series can respond differently. RTINGS’ model pages demonstrate this variation: its Samsung Q80D and Sony BRAVIA 7 calibration references use model-specific settings rather than a single cross-brand value. See the Samsung Q80D reference and the Sony BRAVIA 7 reference.
A practical sharpness procedure
- Pause a high-quality scene containing thin lines, subtitles, hair, or textured fabric.
- Find the sharpness control in the picture menu and note its current value.
- Lower it gradually until obvious halos and ringing disappear, then raise it slightly only if the image has become visibly soft.
- Check the result on real moving video, not just a paused menu or test pattern.
- Repeat for HDR if the TV stores a separate HDR value.
Do not maximize sharpness to make a picture “pop.” A clean edge with no outline usually contains more usable information than an exaggerated edge that appears crisper from a distance.
| What you see | Likely cause | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Bright or dark lines around objects | Sharpness or edge enhancement is too high | Lower sharpness until the outline disappears |
| Fine texture looks smeared | Sharpness is too low, noise reduction is too strong, or the source is compressed | Raise sharpness slightly, reduce noise reduction, and test a better source |
| Grain and mosquito noise become prominent | Edge enhancement is amplifying source noise | Lower sharpness and inspect the original signal quality |
| Text looks jagged only from a PC | Scaling, chroma format, or a computer-specific setting may be involved | Check the TV’s PC input mode and output resolution before adding sharpness |
How to decide on motion smoothing
Motion smoothing, also called interpolation or motion enhancement, analyzes consecutive frames and generates intermediate frames. This can make 24-frame-per-second films look fluid and can make sports easier to follow, but generated frames can contain warped edges, repeating objects, trails, or broken detail. A heavily processed film can also acquire the “soap-opera effect,” where it no longer resembles cinematic motion.
Start with the content, not the slider label
Manufacturers use different names and split controls differently. One menu may have separate film and video settings; another may combine them under a single motion option. The same label can behave differently across brands and firmware versions, so copy neither a slider name nor a number from another model without testing your own set.

For movies and scripted shows
Begin with motion smoothing Off. This preserves the original cadence and avoids interpolation artifacts. If low-frame-rate judder bothers you, enable the smallest available adjustment and watch a slow camera pan, a face crossing the frame, and a scene with foreground and background movement. Stop as soon as you see warping, doubled edges, or an artificial video-like look.

For sports and live video
Sports often benefit from modest smoothing because the source is typically higher-frame-rate video and the subject moves quickly. Increase the control one step at a time while watching a ball, puck, or player crossing the screen. Reduce it if the object bends, leaves a trail, or causes the crowd and scoreboard to shimmer.
For animation and news graphics
Animated edges, scrolling tickers, and lower-third graphics are useful stress tests. Interpolation errors are easy to spot around sharp text and flat color blocks. If letters break apart or logos pulse, back off the setting even if live-action footage looked acceptable.
For games
Interpolation can add processing delay and may conflict with variable-refresh or high-frame-rate output. Use Game mode first, then evaluate whether the TV exposes a separate, low-latency motion option. Competitive players generally value consistent response over artificial smoothness; cinematic single-player games may justify a small amount if the TV keeps latency low.

- Choose a scene with a predictable pan or a fast object moving across a detailed background.
- Watch with motion processing Off and remember the cadence and detail.
- Enable the lowest setting, replay the exact passage, and look for edge warping, trails, and changes in film texture.
- Increase only if the improvement is obvious and the artifacts remain below your tolerance.
- Check another type of content before keeping the setting; a value that helps sports may damage films.
SDR, HDR, and brightness decisions
HDR has a wider brightness range and different tone-mapping behavior from SDR. Enter the picture menu while HDR content is actually playing; many sets expose a separate HDR mode or profile only then. Judge shadow detail and highlight texture in the format you intend to watch instead of assuming SDR values transfer correctly.
Do not solve a black-level problem with brightness
If dark scenes look gray, first verify that the source and TV use matching black-level ranges and that a dynamic contrast feature is not changing the image. Raising brightness can reveal shadow detail but can also lift every black area. If shadows look crushed, lower excessive contrast processing or check the source range before making a large brightness change.
Protect highlight detail
HDR demos can make clipped highlights look impressive. Use clouds, lamps, reflections, and bright subtitles to check whether texture remains visible. If bright areas become flat white after selecting a vivid mode or increasing contrast, return to a more restrained mode and compare again.

Game mode: the separate latency decision
Game mode is designed to shorten the time between an input and the image appearing on screen. It can disable or limit motion interpolation, noise reduction, and other processing, so its picture may differ from Movie or Filmmaker Mode even when brightness appears similar.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Enable it through the TV’s input or picture menu for the console or PC input, then verify that the console is outputting the resolution and frame rate you expect. Check dark scenes, bright HUD elements, and fine text after enabling it. If the picture is too dim or colors change, adjust only the controls still available in Game mode rather than switching back to a latency-heavy preset.
Model-specific behavior matters. The calibration pages for the Samsung Q80D and Sony BRAVIA 7 show why settings and available controls should be checked for the exact television and firmware rather than transplanted as universal instructions.
How to compare modes and settings fairly
Use the same source, scene, and viewing distance. Disable automatic picture changes if the TV offers them, or they can make one mode appear better simply because the content triggered a different brightness level.
| Check | Question to ask |
|---|---|
| Skin tones | Do faces look natural, or are they pushed orange, pink, or gray? |
| Shadow detail | Can you distinguish objects in dark areas without turning blacks gray? |
| Highlights | Do clouds, lamps, and reflections retain texture instead of becoming solid white? |
| Edges | Are letters and objects clean, or surrounded by halos and ringing? |
| Motion | Do pans remain natural, and are there trails, warps, or doubled outlines? |
| Room fit | Is the image comfortable at your normal seating position and lighting level? |
| Gaming response | For games, does control input feel immediate and consistent? |
Accuracy is only one decision. A slightly brighter mode may be easier to see in daylight, while a less processed mode may be preferable at night. Keep the setting that preserves important detail and suits your use, not the one that looks most dramatic for ten seconds.
Use test patterns when you need repeatable checks
For a more systematic adjustment, RTINGS’ general guide points to the downloadable AVS HD 709 calibration package. Test patterns can reveal clipping, incorrect black levels, overscan, and excessive sharpness more reliably than random programming. They help you make repeatable changes, but they do not replace measurement equipment for a true calibration.
Best Value
Load patterns from a known, correctly configured source and follow the package instructions. If a pattern looks wrong because the player, receiver, or TV is altering the signal, fix that chain first; changing picture sliders cannot correct an incorrect output range.
Troubleshoot by symptom
The picture looks too harsh
Return to Filmmaker, Movie, or Cinema mode, lower sharpness, and disable extra edge enhancement. Recheck a face and a textured object before changing color or contrast.
Everything looks unnaturally smooth
Turn motion processing Off, then re-enable only the lowest setting if a particular source needs it. Inspect a slow pan and a moving face for interpolation artifacts.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDark scenes are gray
Check black-level matching between source and TV, reduce dynamic processing, and avoid raising brightness indiscriminately. Compare with a known dark scene in the same format.
Bright details disappear
Move away from Vivid or Dynamic mode, reduce excessive contrast processing, and compare HDR while it is actually active. Use clouds and reflections to confirm that texture returns.
Settings keep changing
Look for ambient-light, energy-saving, auto-picture, or content-adaptive features. Disable them temporarily while comparing modes, then decide whether their convenience is worth the variation.
Game controls feel delayed
Enable Game mode for that input, verify the console’s output settings, and remove motion interpolation or other processing that remains enabled. Do not judge latency from a movie preset.
When professional calibration is justified
Consumer adjustments can produce a cleaner, more comfortable image, but accurate white balance, color coordinates, and tone mapping require measurement equipment and a controlled workflow. A calibration service is most useful when you need repeatable reference accuracy, have a high-end display, or cannot correct a persistent color or grayscale error by eye. For ordinary viewing, careful mode selection and conservative sharpness and motion settings usually deliver the largest visible improvements without purchasing specialized hardware.
Recheck your choices after watching for a few days. Familiarity can reveal a distracting halo or motion artifact that was easy to miss during a short comparison, and seasonal room-light changes may justify a different brightness level without changing the underlying sharpness or motion decisions.
