Test another device on the same network, try the phone on another Wi‑Fi network, move close to the router, then adjust router placement, interference, frequency band and channels before buying hardware.
If the phone works near the router but not in one room, you have a coverage or obstruction problem. If several devices cannot get online anywhere, investigate the router, modem or broadband service. If one phone fails on every Wi‑Fi network, troubleshoot the phone and contact its manufacturer rather than buying an extender.

Start by finding out what is actually failing
A weak Wi‑Fi icon does not always mean the broadband connection is slow. Your phone may be too far from the access point, blocked by dense materials, competing with nearby networks, affected by interference, using a congested channel, or experiencing a device-specific fault. A router can also provide a strong local signal while its internet service is down.

| What you observe | Most likely area to investigate | First action |
|---|---|---|
| Only one phone struggles, including on another Wi‑Fi network | Phone settings, software or hardware | Restart the phone, check Wi‑Fi and Airplane Mode, then contact the phone maker if it cannot connect anywhere |
| The phone fails only at home, while other networks work | Home router settings, coverage or compatibility | Test both bands, move nearer to the router and restart or update the router |
| Several devices fail throughout the home | Router, modem or broadband service | Restart the network equipment and contact the internet provider if devices still cannot get online |
| The phone improves near the router | Distance, walls, furniture or interference | Improve router placement and investigate the path to the weak room |
Apple’s troubleshooting guidance follows the same split: check other devices and the router when multiple devices fail, and contact Apple when an iPhone or iPad cannot connect to any Wi‑Fi network. See Apple’s Wi‑Fi connection troubleshooting steps.
Check the phone before changing the network
Verify the basic controls
Open the phone’s quick settings or Settings app and make sure Wi‑Fi is on. Turn Airplane Mode off; if it was already off, toggling it on briefly and then off can make the phone reinitialize its radios. Select the intended home network and confirm that the password is current. A phone can appear to have weak Wi‑Fi when it is actually associated with a different saved network or a mobile-data connection.
Restart the phone and test again
A restart clears temporary radio and software states without deleting saved networks. After the phone boots, test in the same room and then near the router so you can compare like with like. If the phone repeatedly drops only when its screen locks or wakes, note that pattern; it is more useful to the manufacturer than a general report of “slow Wi‑Fi.”
Try a second network
Use a trusted guest network, workplace network or another household connection. If the phone connects normally elsewhere, the home router or its configuration is the stronger suspect. If it fails on every network, update the phone when an update is available and seek manufacturer support.
Leave network reset as a late step
Resetting network settings can resolve a corrupted configuration, but it removes saved Wi‑Fi networks and their passwords, along with other network preferences. Do it only after the less disruptive tests have failed, and make sure you can re-enter the credentials for your home network.
Use distance and placement as a controlled test
Move close to the router
Stand in the same room as the router and retry the phone. If the connection becomes reliable, the phone and broadband service are less likely to be the root cause; the radio path through your home needs attention. Walk back toward the problem room and note where performance changes. This simple boundary test tells you whether a single wall or a larger coverage area is involved.

Put the router in a better position
When your broadband installation allows it, place the router in an open, elevated, central location. Avoid a corner, enclosed cabinet, floor-level shelf or the space under a desk. Google’s placement guidance says that the position of a router and its points is vital to reliability and recommends an open location, centrally positioned and around eye level when possible. Read the full guidance at Google Home and Nest Help’s Wi‑Fi placement page.
Recommended Free Tools
Move the router only as far as the modem or incoming service cable permits. Do not coil or sharply bend a cable, disconnect equipment you cannot reconnect, or place the router where ventilation openings are blocked. After each placement change, test the phone in the problem room; otherwise you will not know which change helped.
Think about the path, not just the distance
A phone may be only a few metres from a router yet separated by a reinforced wall, appliance or cabinet. Conversely, a longer open path may work well. Treat your floor plan as an experiment: test through each wall, around large furniture and at different heights. Keep the router’s antennas, if it has external ones, in the manufacturer’s recommended orientation and avoid covering the unit with books or decorative objects.
Reduce barriers and sources of interference
Identify common interferers
Move the router and phone away from likely sources of radio or electrical interference, including microwave ovens, cordless phones, fluorescent lights, power cables and wireless video cameras. Do not assume that one source is responsible; change one variable at a time and retest.
Metal is a particularly strong obstruction, while concrete can also attenuate a signal substantially. Wood and glass are generally less problematic, but the exact result depends on construction, distance and the equipment in use. Apple’s wireless-interference guidance lists these materials and recommends reducing competing devices and choosing a less congested channel where the router supports it. Homes differ, so regard the material categories as troubleshooting clues rather than guaranteed loss figures.

Reduce competing traffic
Temporarily pause large downloads, cloud backups, game updates and high-resolution video on other devices. This does not increase the physical signal, but it helps distinguish a coverage problem from a busy shared network. If the phone becomes usable when other devices are idle, inspect router quality-of-service or client-management options only after you have established that coverage is adequate.

Test both Wi‑Fi frequency bands
Many routers expose separate network names for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, while others automatically steer devices between them. If you can select a band, connect the phone to each one in the same room and then in the weak room. Apple explicitly recommends trying another frequency, such as 5 GHz instead of 2.4 GHz, when troubleshooting.
| Test | What to record | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| 2.4 GHz near the router | Whether the phone joins and remains connected | Establishes a baseline for that band |
| 5 GHz near the router | Whether the phone joins and remains connected | Shows whether the phone and router work together on the alternate band |
| Each band in the weak room | Connection stability, not just the icon | Reveals which band is more usable in your actual walls and layout |
Do not treat one band as universally superior. A 5 GHz connection can work very well nearer the router, while the result farther away or through walls depends on the home, router and phone. Use the band that is stable in the room where you need it, and keep the other available for locations where it performs better.
Review channel selection
In an apartment building or dense neighborhood, many nearby networks may compete for airtime. Open the router’s wireless settings and look for channel selection. Automatic selection or a channel scan can allow the router to choose a less-interfered option. If you manually change a channel, record the original setting so you can reverse the change, and use only channels offered by your router for that band and region.
Advanced channel-width and regulatory settings vary by model. Change one setting at a time, test from the phone, and stop if you cannot explain what a setting does. A channel change cannot repair a disconnected broadband line or a phone that fails on every network.
Restart and update the network equipment
Restart in the correct order
- Unplug the router and, if separate, the cable or fibre modem.
- Wait briefly for both units to power down.
- Reconnect the modem first and allow its status lights to settle.
- Reconnect the router and wait for its Wi‑Fi network to reappear.
- Reconnect the phone and test both near the router and in the problem room.
The exact light sequence differs by provider and model. If the router and modem are combined, unplug and reconnect that single unit according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Check for firmware updates
Use the router manufacturer’s app or web interface to check for firmware. Follow the model-specific procedure and keep the router powered during the update. Firmware menus and update behavior change over time, so use the current instructions for your equipment rather than a generic reset sequence.

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11When a range extender is the right next step
A range extender, also called a wireless repeater, is appropriate when the evidence points to a persistent dead zone and you cannot move the router sufficiently. It receives the router’s signal and retransmits it toward the weak area. The extender must itself receive a usable connection; placing it inside the dead spot gives it little to repeat.
Place it between the router and the weak room
Start partway toward the problem area, where a phone or the extender’s setup tool still shows a reliable connection to the router. Test the target room after setup and move the extender if needed. A location that is convenient for a wall socket may still be too far from the router.
Check compatibility and expectations
Confirm that the extender supports your router’s Wi‑Fi bands and security mode. Setup and roaming behavior differ between brands and models. Some extenders create a second network name; others can use the same name. Neither arrangement guarantees seamless roaming, so test how your phone behaves while walking between rooms.
An extender does not repair a broadband outage, a faulty phone or an overloaded internet plan. It also cannot create a strong link if the router’s signal never reaches the proposed location. Buy only after the placement experiment shows that a usable signal exists where the extender would sit, and check the seller’s return policy in case your walls or devices produce a different result.

Mesh Wi‑Fi uses multiple boxes placed around the home to create one coordinated Wi‑Fi network. Ofcom describes mesh networks as connecting to an existing router and creating their own Wi‑Fi network through boxes positioned around the home. See Ofcom’s consumer Wi‑Fi guidance for that distinction.

Consider mesh when several rooms or floors need coverage, when one extender cannot cover the layout, or when you want a single network name managed across multiple points. A single-point extender is often simpler for one isolated weak room. Mesh hardware can require replacing or reconfiguring the existing router, or placing the provider’s router in a compatible mode; verify this before purchase.
| Decision factor | Range extender or repeater | Mesh system or compatible mesh point |
|---|---|---|
| Coverage pattern | Useful for a limited dead zone when it can receive a good router signal | Designed for multiple areas needing coordinated coverage |
| Network arrangement | May use a separate network name or model-specific roaming behavior | Typically coordinates several points as one managed network, subject to compatibility |
| Placement | Partway between router and weak room | Points distributed around the home, each within a usable connection range |
| Existing equipment | Usually added to the current router; confirm bands and security support | Check compatibility with the ISP router, modem and any required operating mode |
| Management | Often a single device to configure | Several points and a management system to maintain |
| What it cannot change | Neither option increases the underlying broadband service speed or fixes an ISP outage | |
Adding more points is not automatically better. Google warns that too many points or poor placement can slow or destabilize a network. Use the system’s connection or mesh test where available, and reposition a point before adding another.
Match the remedy to the symptom
The phone is slow only in one room
Test near the router, move the router toward an open central position if possible, remove obvious barriers and compare both bands. If the improvement follows the phone as it moves, coverage is the leading explanation. Add an extender or mesh point only after you have found a location with a usable backhaul connection.

Check whether devices are connected to Wi‑Fi but show no internet. Restart the modem and router, inspect their status lights and check for an ISP outage through the provider’s normal support channels. If several devices still cannot get online, contact the ISP; changing the phone’s network settings will not restore a service-side connection.
The phone will not join the home network
Re-enter the password carefully, test another device with the same credentials and try the phone on another network. If other devices join but the phone does not, forget and rejoin the home network if your phone provides that option, then restart it. Reserve a full network-settings reset for later because it removes saved configurations.
The phone fails on every Wi‑Fi network
Confirm Wi‑Fi is enabled, Airplane Mode is off and the operating system is current. If the failure persists across networks after a restart, contact the phone manufacturer or service provider. An extender or mesh system cannot correct a phone radio or software fault.
The connection drops near appliances or at particular times
Relocate the router away from microwaves, cordless phones, fluorescent lighting, power cables and wireless cameras. If the pattern corresponds to busy periods in a multi-unit building, review automatic channel selection or a channel scan. Keep the original setting documented so you can undo the change.
Quick Recap
A practical 15-minute improvement plan
- In the weak room, check Wi‑Fi and Airplane Mode on the phone.
- Test another device there and test the phone on another network.
- Move beside the router and repeat the phone test.
- If it improves, place the router openly, centrally and above floor level where the service cable allows.
- Remove nearby interference sources and retest.
- Connect the phone to both available bands and compare stability in the target room.
- Check automatic channel selection or run the router’s channel scan if congestion appears likely.
- Restart the modem and router, then check for firmware updates.
- Only if a coverage gap remains, test an extender midway to the weak area or plan a mesh layout for multiple weak areas.
- Escalate to the ISP for multi-device internet failure, or to the phone maker for a device that cannot use Wi‑Fi across networks.
What not to assume
- A full Wi‑Fi icon does not prove that the broadband service is working; local Wi‑Fi and internet access are separate links.
- A 5 GHz network is not automatically better in every room. Test both bands in the actual home.
- More mesh points do not guarantee more speed. Poor placement or too many points can reduce stability.
- A range extender cannot create a reliable connection when it is placed beyond the router’s usable coverage.
- Resetting network settings is not a harmless first step because saved network configurations are removed.
- No universal percentage improvement or fixed distance can be promised; construction, router placement, interference and device support determine the result.
