To improve fuel economy, set your tires to the pressure specified by your vehicle, keep up with its maintenance schedule, fix mechanical problems, and drive smoothly. These steps can help, but the result depends on the car, its condition, your route, traffic, and weather.
Set tire pressure to the vehicle’s recommendation
Find the recommended pressure on the tire-information placard—often on the driver-side door area—or in the owner’s manual. Use that figure, not the maximum pressure molded into the tire sidewall; the sidewall figure is not the vehicle’s recommended operating pressure. NHTSA explains how to check tire pressure, and its tire guidance recommends checking tires regularly.

Check all tires with a gauge at least once a month, while they are cold: before driving, or after the car has been parked for several hours. Check the spare if the vehicle has one. Recheck after a substantial temperature change or if you suspect a leak, and respond to a tire-pressure monitoring system (TPMS) warning. TPMS is not a substitute for routine pressure checks. A gauge is a useful tool to keep in the car.
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) estimates that proper inflation improves gas mileage by 0.6% on average and potentially up to 3%; it estimates that underinflation reduces mileage by about 0.2% for each psi drop in average tire pressure. These are broad estimates, not guaranteed savings for an individual car. DOE fuel-economy guidance provides the figures.
#1 Best Overall
- Accurate, Dependable Readings: Factory‑calibrated to ±1 PSI, so you can confidently match your vehicle’s recommended PSI (check the door jamb sticker). Ideal for monthly checks and road trips — consistent results every time, cold or warm.
- Bright Backlit Display & Nozzle Light: The illuminated nozzle helps you find the valve stem in the dark, while the backlit LCD makes readings crystal clear in dim garages or at night. No more squinting or holding a flashlight.
- 4 Measurement Units, One Button: Quickly switch among PSI, Bar, Kgf/cm², and KPA with a single press. No complex settings — just press and cycle to your preferred unit. Perfect for drivers who need multiple scales.
- Broad Compatibility for Everyday Vehicles: 0–150 PSI covers cars, SUVs, motorcycles, and spare tires (often 60 PSI). Fits standard Schrader valves; just press on for a reading.
- Auto‑Off to Extend Battery Life: The gauge automatically powers down after 30 seconds of inactivity, so the included 2*AAA batteries last longer. Always ready for your monthly checks without surprise dead batteries.
Follow your car’s maintenance schedule
Use the maintenance schedule for your specific vehicle and engine, and follow the manufacturer’s requirements for service and fluids. DOE says properly maintained vehicles average about 4% better gas mileage. That is an overall estimate for vehicle maintenance—not a promised gain from an oil change or any single routine service. DOE’s maintenance guidance also notes that correcting a serious fault, such as a faulty oxygen sensor, can improve mileage substantially; the result depends on the problem and repair.
If fuel economy drops suddenly, look for a maintenance or mechanical issue rather than relying on an unverified additive or ordering a generic service. Consult the owner’s manual or a qualified mechanic if the cause is not clear.

Drive smoothly and plan ahead
- Accelerate progressively and avoid abrupt acceleration and braking.
- Look ahead, anticipate traffic, and leave a safe following distance so you can respond gradually.
- Avoid unnecessary idling and combine errands when practical.
- Obey speed limits and adjust for road and weather conditions. Fuel-saving is never a reason to drive unsafely.
DOE driving guidance discusses habits such as avoiding aggressive driving and unnecessary idling.

Consider low-rolling-resistance tires when replacing tires
If you already need replacement tires, fuel economy can be one factor in comparing low-rolling-resistance options. Also consider the correct size and fitment, wet and dry handling, durability, noise, cost, and the vehicle maker’s requirements. NHTSA notes that low-rolling-resistance replacement tires can improve fuel economy, but no single tire is established as best for every vehicle. Do not replace serviceable tires solely on the strength of a generalized efficiency claim. NHTSA tire guidance covers pressure and tire choices.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check whether a change is helping
Fuel economy varies with route, traffic, weather, load, and vehicle condition, so a single tank can be misleading. Track fuel use over several fill-ups under reasonably comparable conditions before judging whether a change made a difference. General agency estimates do not guarantee a particular driver’s result.
