Better Netflix audio usually comes from checking three things in order: whether the title offers the track you want, whether that track is selected in the player, and whether your TV, streamer and speakers can carry it. Most fixes take a few minutes in settings and cabling. Buying new audio hardware is a later option, and for some setups a format change is the more useful fix.
Confirm the title offers the audio you want
Surround audio is set title by title, not account-wide. Netflix’s title pages mark titles that include 5.1 with a 5.1 or Dolby Digital Plus icon, and its Spanish-language audio-quality page describes high-quality audio as available on titles that support 5.1 or Dolby Atmos (Netflix 5.1 requirements, Netflix audio quality).

Treat the icon as a starting point. Netflix notes that not every episode or season necessarily carries the option, and that availability can vary by language. If a show lacks 5.1 on one episode, check another episode or language before assuming your setup is at fault.
Select the right track in Audio & Subtitles
- Start playback of the title and pause if you need the controls on screen.
- Open the Audio & Subtitles menu in the player.
- Choose a track labelled 5.1 if one is listed for that language. If none is listed, the title or episode does not offer surround in that language.
- Resume playback and confirm the change took effect. Netflix can reset the audio on a new episode, so recheck the menu when the next one starts.
Check streaming quality and device support
Netflix says 5.1 streaming needs three things at once:
#1 Best Overall
- Amp up your audio - Fire TV Soundbar enhances TV audio with dual speakers for fuller sound, clearer dialogue, and deeper bass—all in a compact design.
- Immersive sound - Enjoy a three-dimensional virtual surround sound experience with DTS Virtual:X and more detail with Dolby Audio.
- Easy setup - Just plug in the included HDMI cable to the HDMI eARC/ARC port on your TV to instantly enjoy audio that's always in sync.
- Compact design - With a length of 24“ and a height of just 2.5", Fire TV Soundbar fits most entertainment consoles and TV stands.
- Stream audio with Bluetooth - Connect your phone or tablet via Bluetooth to fill the room with your favorite music.
- A 5.1-capable audio system, such as a receiver, surround system or soundbar that accepts multichannel audio.
- A Netflix-capable device that supports 5.1 output.
- Streaming quality set to Medium, High or Auto. Lower quality settings can prevent surround playback.
If one of these is missing, the title can play correctly in stereo while the surround option never appears or sounds different (Netflix 5.1 troubleshooting).
Fix output settings and connections
When the title and track are correct but you still hear stereo, check the output chain from the device outward.

- Device audio output mode: set it to a 5.1-compatible option rather than stereo or Linear PCM when your connected equipment supports 5.1. Linear PCM is not a surround format your equipment may accept, so do not force it if the receiver cannot decode multichannel sound.
- Physical connections: confirm that speakers, HDMI or optical cables are fully seated and connected to the correct ports.
- Cable: if the connection still produces no surround, test another cable. A faulty cable can look like a Netflix problem.
These steps come from Netflix’s 5.1 troubleshooting guidance (Netflix 5.1 troubleshooting).
Cases where surround is not available
- Downloaded titles: Netflix says downloaded titles do not support 5.1. Stream the title to get surround.
- Computers: Netflix’s support article says 5.1 on computers works only on Windows 10 or later, through Edge or the Netflix app.
When voices are too quiet or overall volume is low
Netflix separates two problems. Low overall volume starts with the device volume, then moves to device-specific steps. Dialogue that is buried under background sound has its own guidance that changes by device (Netflix low-volume guidance, Netflix dialogue guidance).

Apple TV 4 and Apple TV 4K
- Open Settings, then Video and Audio.
- Select Audio Format, then Change Format.
- Try Dolby Digital 5.1 and replay a scene with quiet dialogue.
- If voices are still hard to hear, try Stereo.
Netflix’s guidance presents these as troubleshooting steps. A surround format is not automatically the clearest option, so if Stereo gives better speech in your room, use it.
Other devices
Netflix’s dialogue page does not give a general menu sequence for other devices. Its low-volume guidance points to device volume checks and device-specific steps first, and directs users to contact Netflix when the device is not covered. Stereo is the documented fallback for low volume on other devices as well, so it is worth testing if a surround format does not help.

Whether a soundbar or audio system is worth considering
A soundbar or compatible external audio system is an optional route, not a first fix. It makes sense if your TV or streamer can send surround and your current speakers cannot decode it, or if you want clearer dialogue from a dedicated unit. Netflix’s troubleshooting discusses sound bars, receivers, surround systems and other external audio devices, and its 5.1 requirements specify that a capable audio system is needed (Netflix 5.1 requirements, Netflix low-volume guidance).

When comparing options, check these points:
- Whether your TV or streamer outputs the format the unit needs, and which connection type it uses.
- Whether you want stereo playback, surround immersion, or clearer dialogue.
- Any dialogue clarity controls the device maker documents.
Netflix’s sources do not show that a particular purchase will fix a given problem, so run the checks above before buying.
