How to improve your aim in VALORANT: a beginner’s practice routine

The fastest way for a new VALORANT player to build reliable aim is to practice a small set of habits in order: place the crosshair at head height, stop moving before you shoot, fire controlled shots, move deliberately between targets, and then use those habits against real opponents. The routine below uses The Range and a live mode; its timings are an editorial starting point, not a Riot-validated prescription. Riot’s own beginner guidance states, “Stop moving before shooting to be more accurate.”

What beginner aim actually consists of

Aim is not one skill. A missed duel can come from the crosshair starting in the wrong place, movement still being active when the shot was fired, an uncontrolled burst, or a rushed transition to the next target. Separating those causes makes practice far more useful than simply firing at targets for as long as possible.

Crosshair placement

Keep the crosshair where an opponent’s head is likely to appear before you see the opponent. In The Range, walk around corners and keep your crosshair at a consistent head-height line rather than looking at the floor or sky. The goal is to make a small correction when a target appears, not a large flick from an arbitrary starting point.

Movement accuracy

VALORANT rewards a clear stop before a precise shot. If you are holding a movement key when you fire, the weapon is less accurate. Build the sequence into muscle memory: move, release the movement key, let the character settle, then click. Riot’s August 2, 2024 Beginner’s Guide gives the same direct instruction, but it does not prescribe a particular drill length.

Trigger control

Use a deliberate single shot or short burst when the target is at a distance. A calm reset between shots gives you time to confirm the crosshair is still on the target. Spraying can be useful in some close fights, but it should not be the default response while you are learning to place and stop.

Target transitions

After one target, move your eyes and crosshair to the next target without throwing away your head-height reference. This is the practical combination of placement and a controlled flick. Accuracy comes before speed; increase speed only when the path remains repeatable.

On PC, Riot’s Patch 9.02 notes described Basic Training and The Range as destinations in the Practice menu. Patch menus can change, so use the labels shown in your current client. The Range is enough for this routine; no external software or purchase is required.

Choose settings you can repeat

Start with a sensitivity and crosshair that feel comfortable, then leave them alone while you learn the drills. Riot’s Patch 9.0 notes documented crosshair-preset updates and an Aim Sensitivity slider with adjustment precision of 0.1. That is a record of a settings update, not evidence that one sensitivity value is best. Change one setting at a time and play enough repetitions to notice what changed.

A practical beginner routine

The following is a suggested 25-to-30-minute structure. The exact minutes are a coaching framework for consistency, not a measured threshold from Riot or a guarantee of improvement. If you have less time, keep the order and shorten each block.

Block Editorial time Action Success check
Settle in 2 minutes Enter The Range, check controls, and fire a few easy shots. Your hand feels relaxed and your crosshair returns to a familiar position.
Stationary targets 5 minutes Move the crosshair to a target and fire one controlled shot. You are choosing the target deliberately instead of snapping randomly.
Stop, then shoot 5 minutes Strafe briefly, release movement, and fire only after stopping. Shots are taken after the stop rather than during the strafe.
Target transitions 5 minutes Move between targets at head height and take a controlled shot on each. The crosshair arrives near the next head before you click.
Movement into a shot 5 minutes Move between positions, stop, and take a clean shot as if an opponent appeared. You can repeat the move-stop-shot sequence without rushing.
Live application One match or Deathmatch Apply the same habits against unpredictable players. You keep the chosen focus even when the round becomes chaotic.
Review 2 minutes Write down one recurring miss and one adjustment for next time. You leave with a specific focus, not a vague feeling about performance.

1. Settle in and check control

Load The Range and take a few low-pressure shots. Do not use this opening to hunt for a perfect score. Check that your sensitivity, crosshair, keybinds, and mouse position are unchanged. If something feels wrong, adjust one item and note it; changing several settings at once prevents you from knowing which change helped.

2. Warm up on stationary targets

  1. Choose one visible target.
  2. Place the crosshair at the target’s head level before moving toward it.
  3. Take one controlled shot.
  4. Return the crosshair to a neutral head-height line, then choose another target.
  5. Repeat slowly enough that every miss has an identifiable cause.

This block is about deliberate movement to the target, not maximum clicking speed. If you miss, reset and make the next attempt cleanly instead of immediately spraying at the same target.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Rehearse stop-then-shoot

  1. Start beside a target and hold a movement key for a short strafe.
  2. Release the key before firing.
  3. Click once or use a short, controlled burst.
  4. Pause long enough to recognize whether the shot happened after the stop.
  5. Repeat from the opposite direction.

At first, make the stop intentionally obvious. As the sequence becomes comfortable, shorten the pause without firing while movement is still active. The objective is a dependable order of operations, not a particular number of milliseconds.

  • Compact, portable design with convenient built-in storage for included USB wireless receiver

4. Add target transitions

Select two or more targets. Look at the next target before moving the crosshair, then guide the crosshair to its head and fire. Alternate directions so you do not learn only one comfortable mouse path. Keep the shot controlled; if you begin missing because you are rushing, slow down until the path is repeatable.

Riot and Aim Lab training announcements have used categories such as headshots, microflexing, flicking, and one-tap practice to describe aim fundamentals. Those announcements can inform optional blocks like this one, but they do not establish a complete beginner schedule or prove that a particular drill is superior.

5. Practice movement into a clean shot

Move between two positions in the Range, stop, and take a deliberate shot at a target. Treat the exercise as a rehearsal for entering a new angle: your crosshair should already be near head height as you arrive, and the shot should happen only after the movement stop. This applies the official stop-before-shooting principle without claiming that Riot prescribes this exact strafe drill.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Take the habits into live play

Use Deathmatch as an application test

A Deathmatch gives you repeated encounters against less predictable opponents. Enter with one goal, such as “release movement before every long-range shot,” rather than trying to fix every weakness at once. Expect your accuracy to dip while you concentrate on a new sequence; that is practice, not proof that the setting is wrong. The available official material does not establish a required number of Deathmatch games.

Use an ordinary match for decision-making

In an unrated or other normal match, keep the same mechanical focus while learning when to hold an angle, when to reposition, and when not to take a low-probability duel. Do not turn every round into a frantic aim test. A good application goal might be to clear each angle with the crosshair at head height and to stop before firing whenever you have room to do so.

Review one recurring miss

After the match, identify the most common failure: firing during movement, starting with the crosshair too low, over-flicking, or rushing a second target. Choose one correction for the next session. One match is too noisy to measure a reliable improvement rate, so use repeated observations instead of a single kill count.

Diagnose misses instead of changing everything

What you notice Likely issue Next practice adjustment
Shots miss immediately after a strafe. You are firing before the movement has stopped. Return to the stop-then-shoot block and make the release obvious.
You frequently aim at the chest or floor. Your crosshair path has no consistent head-height reference. Walk the Range while keeping the crosshair on a fixed head-level line.
The first target is accurate but the second is rushed. You are prioritizing speed over a controlled transition. Use two targets and pause briefly between the first shot and the next placement.
You over-correct past targets. The sensitivity or mouse movement is difficult to control. Keep the same setting for a session, then make one small change only if the problem repeats.
Your aim varies dramatically from day to day. Posture, grip, desk space, or settings may be changing. Standardize your setup before judging the routine.
You perform well in the Range but freeze in matches. The mechanical sequence has not been tested under pressure. Use one live mode with a single focus, then review the same failure categories.

Range or an external aim trainer?

The built-in Range should be the default for a beginner because it is immediately available and uses VALORANT’s own weapons, movement, and visual context. An external trainer can add narrowly defined tasks, but it is an optional supplement rather than a requirement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Consideration The Range External trainer such as Aim Lab
Game-specific context Uses VALORANT’s settings, weapons, and practice environment. Can isolate aim tasks outside a match; Riot’s historical material described tasks related to flicking, wall peeking, holding angles, and one-tap practice.
Convenience No separate installation or routine required; access it from the game’s Practice menu. Requires switching applications and learning its task setup.
Skill categories Supports practical placement, stopping, shooting, and transitions in the game. Riot/Aim Lab’s 2021 Combine material listed entry, headshots, microflexing, tracking, trigger control, and wallpeek.
What the evidence shows Riot documents The Range as a practice location. Riot announced Aim Lab as an official FPS training partner for VALORANT Challengers NA in 2021. That historical partnership and the listed tasks do not show that an external trainer outperforms The Range or is necessary for beginners.

If you enjoy an external trainer, use it to isolate one weakness and then transfer that skill into The Range and a live match. Do not replace game-specific practice with an endless benchmark chase.

How to handle sensitivity and crosshair changes

There is no universally correct sensitivity, mouse, or crosshair established by the cited official sources. A setting is useful when you can repeat the same movement, stop, and correction without discomfort. A creator’s settings can be a starting experiment, not a rule.

  1. Record your current sensitivity and crosshair before changing anything.
  2. Change only one variable.
  3. Run the same stationary and transition blocks with the new setting.
  4. Keep it only if control and comfort are consistently better over more than one session.
  5. Do not change again simply because one match went badly.

Riot’s community roundup has linked creator advice about mouse and sensitivity settings, while Patch 9.0 documented the 0.1-precision Aim Sensitivity slider. Neither source identifies a single value that every beginner should use.

An optional seven-day progression

Use this as a way to distribute attention, not as a scientifically tested schedule. Each day can include the short Range sequence followed by one live mode, or only the Range blocks if time is limited.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Day 1 — Control: stationary targets and obvious stop-then-shoot repetitions.
  2. Day 2 — Placement: walk common angles in the Range while keeping the crosshair at head height.
  3. Day 3 — Transitions: alternate between two and then several targets without sacrificing a controlled shot.
  4. Day 4 — Movement: rehearse moving to a new position, stopping, and firing.
  5. Day 5 — Live application: play a Deathmatch with one mechanical focus.
  6. Day 6 — Match application: carry the same focus into an ordinary match and note one recurring miss.
  7. Day 7 — Review: repeat the weakest block and compare your notes from several sessions, not one score.

Rest or shorten a session when your hand, wrist, or attention becomes fatigued. Tired repetitions can teach the rushed movement you are trying to remove.

Common beginner mistakes

  • Chasing speed too soon: Fast misses do not build a reliable pattern. Slow down until the sequence is clean.
  • Spraying at every distance: Start with controlled shots so you can see whether placement and stopping are working.
  • Changing sensitivity daily: Frequent changes erase the reference you need to judge control.
  • Practicing only stationary clicks: Add stop-then-shoot and movement-to-shot work before deciding that Range accuracy transfers automatically.
  • Playing without a focus: A live match produces little useful feedback if you never identify what you were testing.
  • Buying gear as a shortcut: Hardware may improve comfort or reliability, but no supplied evidence proves that a particular mouse is required for better aim.
  • Treating one bad session as a verdict: Note the miss, correct one thing, and look for the pattern across multiple sessions.

What progress should look like

Early progress is often behavioral rather than a dramatic score increase. You may notice that the crosshair starts closer to head level, that you recognize movement errors immediately, or that you can repeat a stop before shooting without consciously narrating each step. Keep a brief log with the date, setting changes, drill focus, and one recurring miss. This gives you a stable basis for decisions without inventing a guaranteed improvement percentage or a required daily minute count; the cited Riot material provides neither.

When the sequence becomes automatic, increase the difficulty by making target transitions less predictable, adding movement between engagements, and applying the habit in live rounds. Preserve the order that matters: place, stop, shoot, reset, and then move to the next fight.
