How to Improve Website Accessibility for Screen Readers: A Practical Developer Checklist

Fix semantic structure first, then images, forms, keyboard interaction, focus, and feedback. Use Easy Checks as a starting review—not proof of complete WCAG conformance.

Improve screen-reader access by fixing the page’s semantic structure first, then providing purposeful image alternatives, properly labeled forms, complete keyboard operation, and useful status and error feedback. Review a representative page with W3C/WAI Easy Checks, but treat that review as a starting point—not proof of complete WCAG conformance.

1. Build a semantic page structure

Screen readers use HTML semantics to provide navigation shortcuts and orientation. Start with real elements rather than styling generic containers to look meaningful.

Use landmarks and meaningful elements

  • Use one <main> for the primary content, with <header>, <nav>, <aside> and <footer> where they represent actual regions.
  • Use <button> for an action, <a href> for navigation, <form> for submitted input, and lists for lists.
  • Give a landmark an accessible name when a page has more than one of the same type, such as two navigation regions. A visible heading can provide that name, or use an appropriate ARIA labeling technique only when native HTML is insufficient.

Nest headings by topic

Use a logical sequence of <h1> through <h6>. Do not turn bold, enlarged text into a heading with CSS alone. A heading should identify the section that follows, and its level should reflect the section relationship rather than its visual size. W3C/WAI’s WCAG 2.1 Understanding Success Criterion 2.4.6 states: “Headings and labels describe topic or purpose.”

Write useful titles and labels

Set a descriptive document title, such as “Account settings | Example,” instead of a generic “Page.” Make link text and controls understandable when encountered out of context: “Download the invoices” is more useful than “Click here.”

  <h1>Change notification settings</h1>
  <section aria-labelledby="email-heading">
    <h2 id="email-heading">Email notifications</h2>
    ...
  </section>
</main>

2. Write image alternatives for their purpose

Alt text is not a description of every visible detail. It communicates the information or function an image contributes to the page.

Informative images

Describe the relevant information. If a chart shows that support requests rose in March, say that relationship and any value the reader needs, then provide a longer data table when the details matter.

Functional images

Name the action, not the appearance. An image inside a search button needs an alternative such as “Search,” not “magnifying lens.” If the control already has a visible text label, avoid duplicating it in the image’s alternative.

Decorative images

Use an empty alternative (alt="") for visual flourishes that add no information, or place them in CSS. An omitted or invented description can create unnecessary announcements and distract from useful content.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Image role Appropriate treatment Avoid
Informative photo State the relevant subject or message. Repeating a caption or listing irrelevant visual details.
Button icon Name the action, such as “Search” or “Close.” “Blue magnifying glass” or “X shape.”
Decorative flourish alt="" or CSS background. Adding filler text that screen readers must announce.

3. Make forms identifiable and recoverable

Every form control needs an understandable, programmatically associated label. A visible label connected with for and a matching id is a robust baseline.

<label for="username">Username</label>
<input id="username" name="username" autocomplete="username" required
       aria-describedby="username-help username-error">
<p id="username-help">Use 6–30 letters or numbers.</p>
<p id="username-error" role="alert" hidden>Enter a username with 6–30 letters or numbers.</p>

Explain required and unusual input

Do not rely only on color, an asterisk, or placeholder text to indicate a requirement. State what is needed before submission and provide instructions for formats, limits, or irreversible actions.

Report errors and success

Identify the affected field, explain what went wrong, and tell the person how to fix it. Preserve entered values where possible and move focus deliberately to the error summary or first invalid control without creating a disorienting jump. Confirm successful completion as well as failure, using an appropriate status announcement for dynamic updates.

4. Make every interaction keyboard-operable

Test without a mouse. Every action, menu, dialog, carousel, drag alternative, and custom widget must be reachable and operable with a keyboard.

  • ✅Widely Use Range - This Symcode Handheld barcode scanner can be used in supermarkets, convenience stores, warehouses, libraries, bookstores, drugstores, and retail shops for file management, inventory tracking, POS(point of sale), etc.

Check the tab sequence

  • Press Tab and Shift+Tab through the page.
  • Confirm the order follows the visual and task order.
  • Ensure interactive elements have a visible focus indicator with sufficient contrast; do not remove the browser outline without an equally clear replacement.
  • Check that focus is not trapped in a modal, menu, or embedded component. A modal may temporarily constrain focus, but it must provide a keyboard method to close and return focus to the invoking control.

Prefer native controls

A native button, link, checkbox, select, and dialog behavior includes keyboard and accessibility semantics that custom div widgets do not. If a custom component is unavoidable, implement its expected keyboard behavior, name, role, value, and state, then test it with the assistive technologies your audience uses.

5. Review multimedia and dynamic content

Provide alternatives for multimedia, including captions or transcripts when the content requires them. For content that updates without a page reload—such as shopping-cart totals, validation results, or saved-state messages—ensure the change is exposed to assistive technology and does not unexpectedly steal focus.

6. Run a first-pass review with Easy Checks

W3C/WAI Easy Checks is designed as an introductory review. Most checks can be made in a normal browser, although an extension can make some easier. Apply the checks to representative pages and key tasks rather than only the home page.

  1. Read the page title and decide whether it identifies the page.
  2. Inspect headings and landmarks for meaningful names and logical nesting.
  3. Review informative, functional, and decorative images for appropriate alternatives.
  4. Complete the main task with the keyboard alone; verify focus visibility and order.
  5. Submit forms with missing and invalid data; check instructions, error identification, recovery, and success feedback.
  6. Check multimedia alternatives and the basic structure of the page.

A positive first pass only indicates that basic issues may be addressed. It is not evidence that every WCAG requirement is met. For consequential or complex experiences, involve people who use assistive technology early and throughout the project, and evaluate representative tasks with relevant screen-reader and browser combinations.

7. Choose review depth deliberately

Review approach Useful coverage What it cannot establish alone
Browser-based Easy Checks Titles, headings, images, keyboard basics, forms, and obvious structure. Complete WCAG conformance or every interaction state.
Code and semantic review DOM structure, names, roles, states, labels, and error relationships. Whether real users can complete tasks comfortably.
Assistive-technology task testing Practical navigation and task completion with selected screen-reader/browser pairs. All combinations or every page unless the sample is broad.
Evaluation with representative users Real-world barriers, terminology, and workflow breakdowns. A guarantee that no other user group or requirement is affected.

Define the pages, tasks, browsers, screen readers, and user groups you will cover. There is no universally sufficient test matrix established by the introductory W3C material; your risk, audience, and technology stack should determine the scope.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

8. Troubleshoot common failures

“The heading looks right, but it is not announced”

Inspect the DOM. Replace styled text in a generic element with the correct heading element and place it at the proper level.

“The icon button is announced as ‘button’”

Give the button an accessible name with visible text or a correctly associated label. Name the action, and hide the decorative duplicate icon from the accessibility tree when necessary.

“The form field is announced without context”

Check that the label’s for exactly matches the control’s id. Add descriptive instructions or an error relationship when the label alone is insufficient.

“Keyboard users cannot reach the custom widget”

Replace the widget with a native control where possible. Otherwise, implement keyboard entry, visible focus, state announcements, and a logical focus return path, then retest after each interaction change.

“Errors appear visually but are missed”

Expose the error in text, associate it with the field, and provide a predictable focus or status announcement. Do not communicate the problem by color alone.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need screenshots of pages while documenting an accessibility review, ScreenshotNeo can capture a URL through one request. It accepts consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does passing an Easy Checks review prove WCAG conformance?

No. It is an introductory review of common issues, not a complete conformance evaluation.

Should every image have descriptive alt text?

No. Informative and functional images need purposeful alternatives; purely decorative images generally use empty alt text.

Can automated tools replace screen-reader users?

No. Tools can expose structural and interaction defects, but representative user and assistive-technology testing reveals workflow barriers that automated checks cannot establish.
