To improve how Wii games look on a modern TV, use a Wii Component Video Cable and set the console to EDTV or HDTV (480p), if your TV accepts component video. The Wii’s documented progressive output is 480p—not 720p or 1080p—and games without progressive-scan support remain in 480i. If your TV has only HDMI inputs, a Wii-compatible adapter or scaler may provide a connection, but compatibility and picture results depend on the specific device.

What can improve the Wii picture?

The Wii’s documented progressive mode is 480p. Nintendo requires a Wii Component Video Cable for the console’s 480p setting; a standard Wii AV cable will not make that option available. This changes the signal from interlaced to progressive when the game supports it, but it does not turn the Wii into an HD-resolution console.

Nintendo cautions that “Not all games support progressive scan mode.” A game without 480p support displays in 480i, even if the console is set to 480p. Nintendo’s Wii technical specifications and Wii Operations Manual: Channels and Settings describe the supported modes and the 480i fallback.

How to set up 480p on a Wii

  1. Connect a Wii Component Video Cable to the console’s Digital AV Out port. Connect the cable’s component plugs to the matching component inputs on the TV, following the labels on the cable and television. See Nintendo’s instructions for connecting a Wii with component video cables.

GANA Wii to HDMI Converter, 1080P Wii HDMI Adapter with 3.5mm Audio Jack
    • STABLE WII TO HDMI CONVERSION: Convert your Wii or Wii U audio and video signal to HDMI for modern HDTVs, monitors and projectors. Designed for stable signal transmission and synchronized sound and picture, it works with 720p and 1080p HDMI displays while preserving the console’s original image quality.
    • SIMPLE PLUG-AND-PLAY SETUP: No drivers, software, settings or external power required. Connect the adapter to your console, attach an HDMI cable, select the correct HDMI input on your display and start playing. For the most reliable connection, plug the adapter directly into the TV, monitor or projector rather than an HDMI switch or splitter.
    • HDMI AUDIO PLUS 3.5MM AUDIO JACK: Audio is transmitted through the HDMI connection, while the built-in 3.5mm audio output lets you connect headphones, a headset or external speakers. Enjoy private late-night gaming or send the sound directly to your preferred audio device.
    • SUPPORTS STANDARD WII DISPLAY MODES: Compatible with NTSC 480i, 480p and PAL 576i display modes. Some newer TVs and monitors may not accept certain 240p or 480i game signals through HDMI; if no picture appears, set the Wii display resolution to 480p when the game and console support it.
    • COMPACT DESIGN & CLEAR COMPATIBILITY: Measuring approximately 6 × 3 × 1.9 cm, the compact adapter connects neatly behind the console without taking up desk space or adding tangled cables. Compatible with Wii and Wii U consoles using the Wii AV output connection; not compatible with Wii Mini. If you experience no picture, no sound or abnormal display lines, contact customer support for troubleshooting or replacement assistance.
  2. On the Wii, open Settings, choose Screen, then TV Resolution.

  3. Select EDTV or HDTV (480p) and confirm. Nintendo documents that this option is available when a Wii Component Video Cable is connected. If the choice is missing, check that cable connection first. See Nintendo’s TV resolution instructions.

If your TV has no component input

If the TV has HDMI but no component video inputs, a Wii-compatible HDMI adapter or video scaler may be needed to connect the console. These devices are not interchangeable by default: verify that the specific product supports the Wii and its 480p signal. Also check whether it only converts the connection or performs image scaling. A converter is not automatically a picture-quality upgrade, and there is no model-specific performance comparison established here.
