The safest way to improve a Steam Machine game is to measure first, then reduce the setting that is limiting performance, one change at a time. Steam Machine uses 1080p as its system-default game resolution and as the resolution used for Steam Machine Verified testing, but that does not make 1080p the best setting for every game, display, or visual target.
Start with SteamOS updates and a repeatable section of the game. Use Steam’s in-game performance monitor to see whether the GPU, CPU, or memory is under pressure and whether stutter is hiding behind an acceptable average frame rate. Lower the game’s own graphics options before changing the display’s picture controls. Reduce only enough to reach a frame-rate pattern you can live with, then compare the image at the same scene and camera angle.

Why there is no universal Steam Machine graphics preset
Games place different demands on the hardware. One title may be limited by graphics processing, another by the CPU, and another by memory use or asset streaming. Even a game’s built-in default can be unsuitable for a particular display or scene. Steam’s guidance therefore treats graphics tuning as a per-game process rather than publishing one preset that fits every title.

Steam Machine’s default game resolution is 1080p. In the Display resolution menu it is labeled Default, and Steam says the same resolution is used for Steam Machine Verified testing. You can change resolution globally or override it for an individual game. The default is a starting point, not a promise that every game will hold a stable frame rate at 1080p.

Image quality also depends on the display. HDR behavior, RGB range, brightness, and color temperature alter what you see, but Steam’s display documentation does not present those controls as frame-rate fixes. Treat rendering settings and picture calibration as separate jobs.
1. Record a baseline before changing anything
A baseline prevents you from trading away image quality for a problem that was actually caused by an update, a display mode, or a short-lived loading event. Pick a repeatable section: the same save point, level entrance, race lap, combat encounter, or camera route. Let the game run long enough to pass the first burst of shader compilation or asset loading, then repeat the route after each change.
Turn on the Steam performance monitor
Open Steam’s in-game performance monitor from the performance overlay while the game is running. The monitor can expose frame-rate information and hardware-load indicators for the GPU, CPU, and memory. It is useful because an average frame rate can look healthy while brief drops make camera movement or combat feel uneven.
Recommended Free Tools
- Launch the game and load the repeatable scene.
- Open the performance overlay and enable the monitor.
- Play the route without changing settings.
- Note the displayed frame-rate behavior, not just the largest number. Watch for repeated dips, long frametime spikes, or uneven pacing.
- Record which of the GPU, CPU, or memory indicators is consistently closest to its limit and whether the symptom is sustained slowness or occasional stutter.
The monitor’s exact metrics depend on system support, and some readings may not be available on every operating system. Use the information it does provide as a diagnostic clue rather than treating a missing metric as proof that a component is idle.
Use consistency as the baseline
If the game feels smooth at a lower average but has occasional pauses, the minimums and consistency matter more than the average. A short traversal hitch, a repeatable drop during effects-heavy combat, or a pause whenever a new area streams in should be written down separately from ordinary low performance. You will choose different fixes for sustained load and for intermittent stutter.
2. Update SteamOS, then check the game’s compatibility context
Before tuning graphics, install available SteamOS and game updates and restart the Steam Machine. Steam’s software troubleshooting guidance lists updates and a restart among the first steps for instability. A tuning change made before an update can become unnecessary afterward, and a pending restart can leave you diagnosing a transient problem.
Read compatibility information carefully
Check the game’s Steam compatibility information before assuming that a graphics issue is a settings issue. Steam’s Deck Verified classifications are defined for Steam Deck. Steam says the associated troubleshooting information may also apply to some SteamOS-compatible third-party AMD hardware, but it does not turn a Deck rating into a Steam Machine-specific certification. For non-Deck hardware, Steam directs users to the device manufacturer when the general advice does not resolve the problem.

A compatibility label is context, not a performance guarantee. A game can launch successfully and still need an individual resolution or quality adjustment for your display and preferred frame-rate behavior.
3. Tune the game’s own options in a controlled order
Steam recommends trying a lower graphics preset or adjusting individual settings when a game is too demanding. The most useful approach is to change one class of setting, replay the same route, and compare both the overlay and the image. Keep any higher-quality option that remains smooth; lower only what is necessary.
Choose a practical frame-rate goal
Steam’s official guidance does not establish a universal target frame rate for Steam Machine. Choose a goal that matches the display and the game: a steady result is generally preferable to a higher number that repeatedly collapses. Write down the behavior you want to improve, such as traversal stutter or drops during a particular fight, so the goal remains measurable.
Try the preset once, then refine individual settings
If the game starts with a high or ultra preset, test the next lower preset and replay the baseline scene. This tells you quickly whether the preset as a whole is too ambitious. If the lower preset makes the image unnecessarily soft or flat, return to the higher preset and adjust individual options instead.
Game developers name and implement settings differently, so the following matrix is a decision aid, not a guaranteed ranking. Use the overlay to verify the result on your title.
| Option or change | What you may notice visually | What to watch in the monitor | How to test it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Overall graphics preset | Several effects, shadows, and detail levels change together; the result can look flatter or less detailed. | Look for a broad reduction in GPU pressure and fewer frame-time spikes. | Test one preset step, replay the same route, then decide whether the visual loss is acceptable. |
| Shadows, volumetric effects, or reflections, when exposed separately | Dark areas, fog, lighting depth, water, or reflective surfaces can look simpler. | Check whether GPU pressure falls specifically in scenes with those effects. | Lower one option, repeat the scene where it is visible, and restore it if the gain is not meaningful. |
| Anti-aliasing or reconstruction options | Edges may become more jagged, softer, or differently resolved; motion clarity can change. | Compare frame-rate consistency during camera movement, not only a still screenshot. | Change the mode or quality one step at a time and inspect fine geometry at the same distance. |
| Texture quality | Surfaces and decals may lose fine detail, especially when viewed close up. | Memory pressure and streaming behavior are more relevant than a brief GPU reading. | Check the same textured objects after loading and during movement; keep the higher level if streaming remains stable. |
| Resolution | The entire image can look softer or less detailed, particularly on a 1080p display scaling a lower input. | GPU pressure often changes substantially, but verify that the game does not introduce new stutter or an undesirable display mode. | Try it after less visible in-game changes and compare text, thin lines, and distant detail. |
The table describes what to look for, not a promise that one option will produce a particular gain. Steam’s published guidance does not rank individual settings or provide a tested percentage improvement for them.
4. Change resolution deliberately, not automatically
Resolution is often the most obvious performance lever and the most visible image-quality compromise. Steam Machine starts games at 1080p by default, but a demanding title may need a lower in-game resolution. Compare the current value with the next available option rather than jumping straight to the lowest one.

Prefer a less visible compromise when it works
When the overlay shows sustained GPU pressure, first test an individual option that is especially expensive in the scene and less noticeable at normal viewing distance. If the game still misses your consistency goal, test a lower resolution. This ordering is a practical method, not an official Steam ranking; the right choice depends on the game’s implementation and your display.

Keep global and per-game changes separate
A global resolution change affects the system’s default behavior, while an individual game’s setting can preserve 1080p for other titles. If only one game struggles, make the smallest per-game change available. If several games show the same limitation and you prefer a consistent desktop or display mode, then consider a global change, documenting the original value so it is easy to restore.
After changing resolution, inspect interface text, subtitles, thin geometry, and distant objects during motion. A setting can improve the overlay while making the image less comfortable to read, especially when the display must scale a non-native input.
5. Diagnose whether the GPU, CPU, or memory is limiting you
The performance monitor helps you choose the next test instead of lowering every setting at once.
When GPU pressure is the leading signal
If GPU load remains high in the same scene and frame-rate drops occur when lighting, particles, reflections, or other effects appear, test the related in-game quality options and then resolution. Keep textures or other details that do not change the measured behavior if they preserve the look you want. Verify the change in the scene that caused the drop; a menu or quiet corridor can hide the limitation.
When CPU pressure is the leading signal
If the CPU indicator is the one that remains high while lowering visual effects changes little, broad image-quality reductions may not solve the problem. Test the game’s simulation-heavy options when available, reduce background activity, and compare scenes with many characters, physics events, or world objects. The exact labels differ by game, so make one change and measure rather than assuming a lower resolution will help.
When memory pressure or streaming causes the symptom
Memory pressure can show up as texture or asset streaming pauses rather than a permanently low frame rate. Compare the same route after a restart and after the area has loaded. If the game offers texture, asset, or streaming quality controls, test those individually and observe whether the pauses become less frequent. Do not infer a memory problem solely from a single hitch; repeat the route to establish that it is reproducible.

When the average looks fine but motion is uneven
Look for frame-time spikes and repeated minimums in the monitor. A reasonable average can coexist with a short hitch during traversal or effects-heavy scenes. Re-run the exact trigger after each change. If the spike remains unchanged after reducing GPU-heavy options, return those settings and investigate CPU, memory, compatibility, or display-specific causes instead of sacrificing more image quality.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.6. Keep display calibration separate from game performance
Steam Machine’s Display > Advanced controls include HDR, SDR brightness, native color temperature, and RGB output range. These controls change the displayed picture. They can correct a washed-out range, excessive brightness, or an unwanted color cast, but the cited Steam guidance does not claim that they improve frame rate.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteHDR and SDR brightness
Use HDR only when the display and game support it and the resulting highlights and shadow detail look correct. If a game offers its own HDR calibration, adjust that after selecting the desired display mode. SDR brightness is a picture control for standard-dynamic-range content; changing it is not a substitute for lowering a rendering setting.
RGB output range and color temperature
An incorrect RGB range can make blacks look gray or crush shadow detail, while color temperature changes the balance between warm and cool tones. Correct those issues by comparing known dark and bright elements on the display. Do not judge a performance change from a brighter or more contrasty picture: the frame workload may be identical.
7. Troubleshoot an external display only when it is the symptom
If performance changes only after connecting a television or monitor, first determine whether the problem is rendering load or a display-handshake issue. Check the game’s selected resolution and display mode, then compare the same scene on the external display. Steam’s separate docking guidance describes cases where an in-game adjustment or a cable or input change is appropriate, depending on the scenario.
A cable or input change can correct a no-signal, wrong-mode, or unstable-display problem. It is not evidence that a premium cable increases Steam Machine frame rate. If the game is still slow with the same resolution and mode, return to the performance monitor and tune software settings.
8. A repeatable tuning worksheet
Use this sequence whenever a game needs adjustment:
Best Value
- Write down the current resolution, preset, and any notable display mode.
- Update SteamOS and the game, then restart the Steam Machine.
- Check the game’s compatibility information and keep its Deck-specific limits in mind.
- Run a repeatable scene with the performance monitor enabled.
- Record frame-rate consistency, visible stutter, and the leading GPU, CPU, or memory signal.
- Change one in-game option or one preset step.
- Replay the same scene and compare both the image and the monitor.
- Keep the change only if it addresses the measured symptom without an unacceptable visual cost.
- If the problem persists, test the next relevant option, then consider a lower resolution.
- Adjust HDR, brightness, color temperature, or RGB range only for picture quality, not as a performance shortcut.
- Restore any change that did not help and record the final per-game settings.
Common mistakes and recovery steps
Lowering everything at once
This makes it impossible to know which change helped and often produces a needlessly soft or flat image. Restore the original preset, then test one setting or one preset step in the repeatable scene.
Judging from a single average frame-rate number
An average can hide the hitch that bothers you. Watch the monitor during the exact movement or encounter that feels bad and compare consistency and frame-time behavior.
Assuming 1080p is mandatory
1080p is Steam Machine’s default and its Steam Machine Verified test resolution, not a universal optimum. Keep it when the game is smooth; test a lower value only when measured load requires it and the resulting softness is acceptable.
Treating a Deck rating as Steam Machine certification
Deck Verified classifications are for Steam Deck. They provide useful context but do not establish a Steam Machine result. For non-Deck hardware-specific problems, use the manufacturer’s support path after trying the general update and settings steps.
Using display controls as performance fixes
HDR, SDR brightness, native color temperature, and RGB output range affect the picture. They do not replace reducing a demanding game option. Separate calibration from rendering tests so you can tell which change affected performance.
The practical rule
Keep the highest image-quality settings that remain consistent in the scene that exposes the problem. Begin at Steam Machine’s 1080p default, update and restart, measure with the performance monitor, identify the leading pressure signal, and make the smallest game-specific change that addresses it. Move to resolution only when less visible adjustments are insufficient, and leave display calibration for picture quality rather than frame-rate tuning.
