Most sound and call problems with open-style clip-on earbuds improve after three checks: seat each speaker outlet toward the ear canal, confirm the phone is using the earbuds for calls, and remove debris from the speaker and microphone openings. Then adjust the model’s equalizer and move to a quieter, less windy location. These steps address fit and routing before you assume the earbuds are defective, while recognizing that an open design cannot provide the bass, isolation, or privacy of a sealed earbud.
Why open clip-on earbuds behave differently
Clip-on earbuds suspend a speaker near the ear rather than sealing the canal with a silicone tip. That construction keeps you aware of traffic, conversations, and other surroundings, but it also makes sound more dependent on position. Bass can seem lighter, external noise remains audible, and people nearby may hear some of your playback. Moving the outlet closer to the canal and using the available equalizer can improve clarity and tonal balance; neither change creates a sealed acoustic path. soundcore explains these trade-offs in its open-ear guide.

Calls add another variable: the microphone must be aimed toward your mouth, the phone must select the earbuds as the call device, and wind or clothing can overwhelm the pickup. The exact microphone location, fit accessories, cleaning method, and app controls differ by model, so treat brand-specific instructions as instructions for that product rather than universal rules.
“Proper wearing enhances comfort and audio performance, so it’s important to wear the earbuds correctly.”

soundcore Support, Tips for Using Your New soundcore AeroClip
Use this order for a fast diagnosis
- Play familiar speech or music at a moderate level.
- Verify the left and right labels, then aim each speaker outlet toward its ear canal.
- Secure a loose clip only with fit parts made for that exact model.
- Inspect the speaker mesh and microphone openings for visible debris; follow the product manual before using any liquid.
- Open the companion app and make a small EQ change, listening after each adjustment.
- For a call, tap the call screen’s audio or Bluetooth control and select the earbuds.
- Repeat the call in a quiet place without strong wind, a helmet, or a mask.
Changing one variable at a time makes it clear whether the problem is fit, routing, contamination, environment, or an inherent limit of open-ear playback.
Improve music, speech, and podcast sound
1. Check orientation and aim the outlets
Start with the physical position, because an outlet that is only a few millimetres off target can make one side quieter or thinner. With audio playing, confirm the left and right markings, then rotate or slide each clip until the speaker opening faces the canal. Do not position the battery housing where the speaker should be.

Its AeroClip guidance also says that the included M and L ear grips may help when the fit is loose. Huawei gives comparable, but model-specific, advice for FreeClip: make the acoustic balls fit the auricle and face the outlets toward the canals in its call and wearing guidance.
Ear anatomy is not symmetrical. It is normal for the left and right clips to need slightly different rotations. Adjust each side independently rather than forcing both to the same angle.

2. Stabilize a slipping clip
A clip that shifts while you walk changes the acoustic aim and can create intermittent volume differences. Re-seat it at the thinner portion of the outer ear and check whether the speaker remains pointed toward the canal when you turn your head. Use only grips, hooks, or other stabilizers supplied for that model. AeroClip’s M and L grips are documented for AeroClip; the manufacturer does not establish that they fit other earbuds or that replacement grips are sold separately.
3. Clean the speaker mesh safely
A gradual volume loss or muffled output often warrants a mesh inspection. Follow the exact care procedure in your manual: products differ in the materials and openings they expose. soundcore tells AeroClip owners to check the mesh every three months or whenever volume drops and describes a soft-brush method on its support page. Do not transfer that method automatically to another model, and do not add liquid, adhesive cleaning gel, or compressed air unless the manufacturer explicitly permits it. A wet or pushed-in mesh can be harder to repair than the original dirt.
4. Use EQ for tonal balance, not isolation
Equalization can compensate for a sound profile that seems too bright, thin, or speech-heavy, but it cannot restore the bass pressure or passive isolation of a sealed earbud. Make small changes and listen to several familiar tracks rather than boosting every band at once; excessive gain can introduce harshness or distortion.
AeroClip’s support material lists six sound effects, including the default Signature sound, and a custom EQ. JBL’s Soundgear Clips specification sheet lists six presets and a customizable 10-band equalizer. Those feature statements describe available controls, not independent measurements of which product sounds better. If your app offers presets, start with the one closest to your content, then make one-band-at-a-time changes.
5. Reduce audible leakage in quiet places
Open earbuds can leak sound even when they are correctly positioned. Aim the outlets as close to the canals as comfort allows and lower the playback level when you are in a library, office, or beside another person. soundcore recommends keeping volume at 50% or lower in quiet environments; that is the manufacturer’s situational advice, not a universal safe-listening threshold. If nearby listeners can still make out lyrics at a comfortable level, the remaining leakage is a design characteristic rather than a fit defect.

Improve microphone quality on calls
1. Confirm call routing before changing the fit
Connecting the earbuds does not always move an active call to them. On the call screen, tap the audio, speaker, or Bluetooth-device control and select the earbuds instead of the phone. If they are not listed, end the call and reconnect them through the phone’s Bluetooth settings before trying again. Huawei specifically warns that a phone can remain selected as the calling device after the earbuds connect; see its support instructions for the model-specific process.

2. Aim the microphones toward your mouth
Reposition the clips so the microphone openings face the mouth as far as the design allows. A loose fit can move the microphones away from your voice, so adjust the clip during a test call and ask the other person whether clarity changes. Raycon’s Open Earbuds manual tells users to face its microphone port toward the mouth side. That is guidance for that construction, not a rule that every clip-on has the port in the same place.
3. Control wind, clothing, and surrounding noise
Test in a quiet room before changing settings. Strong wind, traffic, machinery, and voices can mask speech; a helmet or mask can also disturb the microphone’s airflow and pickup. Huawei cautions against calls in strong wind or high noise and notes that helmets and masks can affect pickup. Raycon likewise warns that open earbuds collect more ambient sound because they lack passive isolation. Turning your body away from the wind, stepping behind a barrier, or removing a noisy covering can be more effective than increasing microphone gain.
4. Inspect and clean the microphone opening
If callers report that you sound distant, check for lint, skin oil, or other debris over the microphone mesh. Clean only as the manual directs. Huawei identifies a blocked microphone or mesh as a possible cause of poor call quality. Never push a pin or other sharp object into a port unless the exact instructions explicitly allow it; you could puncture the membrane or drive debris inside.
5. Isolate the failing component
When calls remain poor, make a controlled comparison in the same location and app: call once with the left earbud, once with the right, and once with the phone’s built-in microphone. Ask the recipient which recording is clearest. This comparison is a diagnostic suggestion, not a guaranteed fix, but it can distinguish a blocked or damaged earbud microphone from a routing or environmental problem. If your model’s app exposes microphone choices, test those settings individually. JBL’s Soundgear Clips sheet, for example, documents selectable use of one or both beamforming microphones in each earbud.

Documented feature differences that affect troubleshooting
Use this table to identify which instructions apply to a particular product. The entries are manufacturer-documented features, not independent performance rankings.
| Model or guidance | Documented controls or fit advice | What it means for troubleshooting |
|---|---|---|
| soundcore AeroClip | Six sound effects, custom EQ, M and L ear grips, speaker positioned toward the front; mesh checks recommended every three months or when volume drops. | You have both preset and manual tonal adjustments, plus model-specific stabilizers. Follow soundcore’s cleaning method rather than a generic one. |
| JBL Soundgear Clips | Six presets, customizable 10-band EQ, and selectable use of one or both beamforming microphones in each earbud. | Microphone selection is an available app control; compare settings during a quiet test call. |
| Huawei FreeClip support guidance | Acoustic balls should fit the auricles and outlets should face the canals; call routing and microphone position are addressed in support instructions. | Use the Huawei procedure for fit and verify the call device on the phone screen. |
| Raycon Open Earbuds manual | Microphone port faces the mouth side; the manual highlights quieter surroundings and the greater ambient pickup of an open design. | Orient the port as specified and treat background noise as a primary variable. |
Match the symptom to the next action
Sound is quiet on both sides
Check the playback volume first, then inspect both speaker meshes. Re-seat the clips with the outlets aimed at the canals. If output remains low after model-approved cleaning, compare the earbuds with another familiar source at the same volume; this helps identify whether the issue follows the earbuds or the phone’s playback setting.
Only one side sounds weak
Verify left/right orientation and adjust that side independently. A small angle difference can move one outlet away from the canal. Inspect that side’s mesh for obstruction and confirm that any grip is seated correctly rather than covering the outlet.
Sound is muffled after cleaning or exercise
Stop using liquid or adhesive products until you have checked the manual. Let the earbuds dry according to the manufacturer’s instructions, then inspect the mesh and microphone openings without inserting anything sharp. If the muffling persists, contact the manufacturer rather than repeating increasingly aggressive cleaning.

People nearby hear too much
Move the outlets closer to the canals and reduce the volume, especially in a quiet room. Because the design is open, some leakage can remain even after a correct fit. A sealed model is the relevant alternative if privacy is non-negotiable.

The other person hears wind or room noise
Confirm that the call is routed to the earbuds, aim the microphones toward your mouth, and move to a quieter, less exposed location. Remove or reposition a helmet or mask if safe to do so. Clean the microphone opening using the exact model procedure.
The other person hears nothing from the earbuds
Use the call screen’s audio selector to choose the earbuds; a connected accessory is not proof that the active call is using it. Reconnect through Bluetooth if the earbuds do not appear, then make a short test call before changing EQ or fit.
When another model may be the practical answer
Replace or return the earbuds only after fit, routing, environment, and model-approved cleaning have been checked. Open-style clips are intentionally a compromise: they trade isolation and some bass weight for awareness and a non-sealing fit. No manufacturer material cited here establishes that one clip-on model is objectively best, and the available specifications are not controlled head-to-head tests.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →If you are comparing alternatives, evaluate the features that directly affect your problem:
- Fit hardware: whether the box includes stabilizers in sizes that suit your ears and whether the speaker remains aimed at the canal while moving.
- Outlet adjustment: how easily the speaker direction can be changed without loosening the clip.
- Equalizer controls: the number of presets, whether a custom EQ exists, and whether the app saves your changes.
- Microphone system: microphone count, beamforming claims, and whether the app lets you select one or both microphones.
- Support documentation: clear instructions for call routing, microphone orientation, mesh cleaning, and drying.
These criteria tell you whether a new model addresses your actual failure mode. They do not predict comfort or call performance for every ear, voice, phone, or environment.
Routine care that prevents repeat problems
- After workouts or wet-weather use, follow the model’s drying and storage instructions before charging.
- Inspect speaker and microphone openings whenever volume or call clarity changes, not only on a fixed calendar.
- Keep the outlets and microphone ports uncovered when attaching optional grips or fit parts.
- Store the earbuds so lint and pocket debris cannot collect around the meshes.
- Recheck call routing after switching between music, video, and phone apps; the selected audio device can change between sessions.
The most reliable sequence is therefore physical first, electronic second: aim and stabilize the clips, clean only according to the model manual, select the earbuds for the call, then tune EQ and manage the environment. If those steps leave you wanting sealed-earbud bass or complete privacy, that is a limitation of the open format rather than a setting you have missed.
