The safest way to extend a smartwatch’s battery life is to remove unnecessary wakeups before disabling health, safety, or communication features. Start by curating notifications, reducing automatic screen wakeups, and avoiding weak cellular or Wi-Fi connections. Then review background refresh and workout sampling. Use a full Battery Saver or Power Saving mode only for unusually long days, because those modes can delay alerts, stop sensors, or disconnect radios.

There is no reliable, cross-brand promise of a specific number of extra hours. Battery size, software version, signal conditions, workout duration, temperature, and battery age all change the result. Make one change at a time and watch whether it affects the functions you actually use.

Start by finding what is draining the watch

Before changing settings, open the watch’s battery or usage screen if the model provides one. Note whether the drain happens while the watch is idle, during workouts, when the phone is out of range, in weak cellular coverage, or immediately after a software update. A setting that helps during a GPS workout may make little difference to an idle watch, while a weak network can consume power all day.

  • Idle drain: look first at Always On Display, wrist-raise or automatic wake, repeated notifications, and background apps.
  • Workout drain: check GPS frequency, heart-rate sensing, screen timeout, speaker audio, and cellular use.
  • Location-related drain: check whether the watch is repeatedly searching for Wi-Fi or holding a weak mobile signal.
  • Sudden drain after an update: allow several days for background tasks to finish before judging the new battery behavior.

After each adjustment, use the watch normally for at least one comparable day. Changing several settings at once makes it difficult to identify the feature that caused a missed notification or an inaccurate workout record.

Keep notifications useful without waking the watch for everything

Notifications can trigger several battery costs at once: a radio exchange, vibration, and a screen wake. The goal is not to turn notifications off; it is to make the watch handle only alerts that require immediate attention.

Allow only important apps

In the watch or phone companion app, review the list of apps allowed to notify the watch. Keep calls, messages, calendar reminders, authentication prompts, and other alerts you genuinely need on your wrist. Remove shopping, social, game, news, and promotional alerts that can wait for the phone.

On Galaxy Watch models, Samsung’s notification controls let you choose which phone apps can notify the watch. This is a more targeted change than disabling notifications globally.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Stop an alert from turning on the display

Some watches let you keep the vibration or notification while preventing the screen from switching on automatically. Use that option for alerts you want to feel but do not need to read immediately. If the watch offers separate controls for automatic details, screen wake, and vibration, change only the part that is costing you the most convenience.

Check the result with a test message and a test call. A setting that suppresses screen wake should not be assumed to suppress the notification itself; model behavior differs.

Reduce display power before sacrificing health data

The display is often the most visible avoidable drain. Always On Display keeps a clock face visible continuously, so turning it off is usually a lower-impact trade than disabling heart-rate or safety functions.

Always On Display

Disable Always On Display when you can accept raising your wrist or tapping the screen to see the time. Apple documents turning off Always On independently of Low Power Mode, and Samsung warns that its Always On setting consumes battery continuously. A shorter screen timeout can reduce the same cost without changing the watch face’s basic behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Wrist-raise and accidental wake

Wrist-raise wake is convenient but can activate the screen during driving, exercise, or hand movements. If the watch supports sensitivity or scheduling controls, reduce automatic wakes during periods when you do not look at the display. Keep a manual wake gesture or button available so the change does not hide information you still need.

Brightness and screen complexity

Use the lowest brightness that remains readable in your normal environments. A face with fewer animated elements and fewer frequently changing complications can also reduce activity. On Apple Watch, complications on the current face continue to refresh even when Background App Refresh is disabled, so remove complications that you do not need rather than assuming a global refresh switch will stop them.

Use the most efficient connection available

Connectivity is not a simple on-or-off battery decision. A watch that is connected efficiently can use less power than one repeatedly searching for a network.

Stay near the paired phone when practical

Apple specifically recommends keeping Apple Watch in Bluetooth range of its paired iPhone when possible. A Bluetooth connection to the phone is generally more efficient for the watch than using mobile data directly. Do not turn off Bluetooth on the iPhone as a generic battery tip: Apple says that doing so can increase Apple Watch drain.

Prefer Wi-Fi to mobile data when the phone is away

When an Apple Watch is away from its iPhone, Apple advises preferring Wi-Fi over mobile data. Cellular radios can consume more power, especially when coverage is poor. If a watch is repeatedly trying to hold a weak signal, moving to a stronger location or returning it to the phone’s Bluetooth range can help more than disabling every connection.

Do not leave a watch searching for a network

Samsung warns that searching for nearby Wi-Fi or maintaining a weak network connection can use significant battery. Turn off a connection only when you understand what will stop working: calls, syncing, remote features, location services, or notifications may depend on it. A blanket instruction to disable Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or mobile service is therefore risky.

Trim background work without losing the data you rely on

Background activity keeps apps and sensors ready, but not every app needs to refresh continuously. Review which information must be current on the watch and which can wait until you open the app.

Apple Watch Background App Refresh

Apple allows Background App Refresh to be disabled globally or for selected apps. Start with individual apps that you rarely open or that do not provide a complication you depend on. Apple notes that apps with complications on the current watch face continue to refresh, so remove an unnecessary complication if it is the source of repeated updates.

Continuous health measurements

Health features have a direct accuracy and safety value. Do not disable heart-rate, blood-oxygen, fall, irregular-rhythm, or other measurements simply to chase a longer runtime if you rely on them. Instead, identify whether your model lets you reduce a sampling frequency during a specific activity or turn off a nonessential measurement while leaving the rest of your health features active.

Record what changes when a sensor is disabled. A setting that saves power may also remove an alert, a trend, or a portion of a health record.

Make long GPS workouts last longer

Outdoor GPS activities combine location tracking, heart-rate sensing, display use, and sometimes cellular communication. The right compromise is to reduce sampling only for the workout where maximum detail is not essential.

Apple Watch reduced GPS and heart-rate readings

On supported Apple Watch models running watchOS 9.1 or later, Low Power Mode can use fewer GPS and heart-rate readings during specified outdoor walking, running, and hiking workouts. This is useful for a long route when a lower-detail track is acceptable. Verify that your model and workout type support the option before starting; behavior is not universal across all Apple Watch generations.

Optical heart-rate sensor versus a chest strap

Apple also documents a workout power-saving approach that disables the optical heart-rate sensor and uses a Bluetooth chest strap instead. With the optical sensor off, calorie-burn calculations may be less accurate. Choose this only when preserving workout duration matters more than the watch’s wrist-based heart-rate and calorie estimates.

Audio and screen use during exercise

Speaker audio can drain newer Apple Watches faster than listening through Bluetooth headphones. Keep the screen off between checks, shorten the workout display timeout where available, and avoid streaming over cellular coverage when an offline workout setup will do.

Use stronger saver modes as temporary tools

Battery Saver and Power Saving modes are contingency settings, not free daily improvements. Read the feature list on your model before enabling one, especially if you need emergency alerts, vibration, location, or continuous health measurements.

Platform What the stronger saver can change When it makes sense
Apple Watch Low Power Mode Turns off Always On Display, background heart-rate and blood-oxygen measurements, and heart-rate notifications; other notifications may be delayed; emergency alerts may not arrive; some cellular and Wi-Fi connections are limited. A long day or workout when you can accept reduced sensor coverage and delayed or limited communications.
Samsung Galaxy Watch Power Saving Reduces brightness, limits background functions and wireless connections, reduces features such as wrist-raise wake, turns the home screen grayscale, leaves only specified calls, messages, and Bluetooth notifications, turns off Wi-Fi and mobile data, and limits performance. A low-battery emergency when basic timekeeping and a small set of alerts matter more than normal connectivity.
Wear OS Battery Saver May stop notifications, disable vibration and location, stop most background data, turn off Always On Display, and disconnect Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and mobile networks. Basic time display may remain. Exact behavior depends on the watch. An end-of-day reserve mode after checking which alerts and connections will disappear.

Wear OS watches that support automatic Battery Saver activation can use a low-battery threshold, but the available percentage and behavior vary by model. Set the threshold high enough to protect the part of the day when you still need the watch, and test the mode before relying on it.

Platform-specific settings to review

Apple Watch

Use the least disruptive sequence: turn off Always On Display if you can live without a constantly visible clock, limit Background App Refresh for selected apps, and keep the watch near the iPhone. When away from the phone, prefer Wi-Fi to mobile data and avoid weak coverage. For supported outdoor workouts on watchOS 9.1 or later, consider reduced GPS and heart-rate readings. Treat Low Power Mode as a deliberate trade because it can disable background sensors, heart-rate notifications, some connections, and potentially timely emergency alerts.

If the watch recently updated, Apple says background work can affect battery life for a few days. Wait through that period before concluding that the update permanently changed runtime. If the problem continues, inspect Battery Health and Maximum Capacity. A service indication points to battery condition rather than a setting you can optimize.

Samsung Galaxy Watch

Review app notification permissions first, then disable automatic notification details or screen wakeups if those controls are available. Turn off Always On Display or shorten the timeout. Check whether the watch is searching for Wi-Fi or holding a weak connection. Keep Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or mobile service enabled when you need the related features; disabling a radio can disconnect the watch.

Samsung’s Power Saving mode is intentionally restrictive: it reduces brightness and performance, limits wireless connections, turns off Wi-Fi and mobile data, and keeps only selected calls, messages, and Bluetooth notifications. Reserve it for a low-battery situation rather than normal daily use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Wear OS

Open Battery Saver settings and review the list of functions your model will disable. Pay particular attention to notifications, vibration, location, background data, and radio connections. If automatic activation is offered, choose a threshold based on when you can tolerate losing those functions, not merely on the largest possible reserve.

Garmin

Garmin’s Forerunner 570 manual search guidance points to stopping Always On Display timeout, selecting a shorter timeout, limiting phone notifications, and turning off wrist-based heart-rate monitoring. Because the detailed official page was not available in the referenced material, confirm the exact menu names and the effect on your model in its owner’s manual before changing heart-rate settings.

A practical order of changes

  1. Measure the problem: check battery usage and note whether drain is idle, workout-related, network-related, or update-related.
  2. Curate notifications: keep only apps whose alerts matter and stop unnecessary screen wakeups where the watch allows it.
  3. Reduce display activity: disable Always On Display, shorten timeout, lower brightness, or reduce wrist-raise wakes according to your comfort.
  4. Improve connection quality: stay near the paired phone, use Wi-Fi rather than mobile data when appropriate, and avoid weak or constantly searching networks.
  5. Trim background work: disable refresh for selected apps and remove unneeded complications, while preserving the health measurements you depend on.
  6. Optimize long workouts: use reduced GPS or heart-rate sampling where supported, or a Bluetooth chest strap if the resulting accuracy trade is acceptable.
  7. Enable a saver mode only when needed: read the disabled-feature list first and test whether essential alerts still arrive.
  8. Escalate persistent drain: inspect battery health and service guidance for the exact model rather than treating an aged battery as a settings problem.

Match each setting to the feature you consider essential

If you must preserve Prefer changing first Avoid changing first
Immediate calls and messages Promotional app notifications, screen wake for low-priority alerts, Always On Display All connectivity or a saver mode that suppresses notifications
Continuous health trends Display brightness, wrist-raise wake, background refresh for unrelated apps Heart-rate, blood-oxygen, or other sensor measurements you use
Detailed workout records Screen timeout, speaker audio, cellular streaming Reduced GPS or heart-rate sampling unless you accept lower detail
Emergency communication Unneeded app alerts and display wakeups Modes that may delay notifications, limit radios, or prevent emergency alerts
Basic timekeeping late in the day Most display and background features Nothing essential to your immediate safety plan, without checking the mode’s exact behavior

When settings are not the real problem

A battery that remains poor after notification, display, connection, and background-work changes may have a degraded cell or a hardware issue. On Apple Watch, check Battery Health and Maximum Capacity and follow the service guidance if the watch indicates one. For any brand, compare drain before and after a full charge under similar conditions, and record whether the watch is hot, searching for a signal, or running a long workout.

Do not judge battery life immediately after every software update. Apple says update-related background tasks can affect battery life for a few days. If the drain persists beyond that period, or if the battery percentage falls rapidly while the watch is idle, model-specific support is more appropriate than stacking increasingly restrictive saver settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The daily profile that usually preserves the most value

For most owners, the balanced profile is a curated notification list, no automatic screen wake for low-priority alerts, Always On Display disabled or limited, moderate brightness, a reliable Bluetooth connection to the phone, and background refresh restricted to apps that supply useful information. Keep health and safety functions that you actively rely on. Save full Battery Saver or Power Saving for a long outing or a nearly empty battery, after confirming which alerts, sensors, and radios it will disable.
