Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTo improve skate. on PC, first confirm that your system meets the Steam minimum or recommended tier and that you have a supported controller. If the game stutters or feels sluggish, set Global Graphics Quality to Custom (or lower the global preset), then reduce Lighting Quality, Shadow Quality, and Ambient Occlusion Quality to Low, changing one option at a time. These are EA’s troubleshooting recommendations; no official source publishes a guaranteed FPS increase for any individual setting.
Start with the practical fix
EA’s documented approach is deliberately simple: when lag appears, lower Global Graphics Quality or switch to Custom, then lower Lighting Quality, Shadow Quality, and Ambient Occlusion Quality. Test after each change so you can stop when the game feels smooth enough without sacrificing more image quality than necessary.

- Use a supported controller. Keyboard and mouse are unsupported during PC Early Access.
- Compare your hardware with Steam’s minimum and recommended specifications.
- Use Ultra only when your PC can sustain the visual quality you want; EA identifies it as the best-looking global preset.
- For a struggling PC, begin with Custom settings and the three quality options EA names, rather than changing every setting at once.
- Treat FSR, XeSS, and DLSS availability as build-dependent. EA’s published upscaling note dates from September 2025 and should not be assumed to describe the current version.
There are no published FPS-by-hardware benchmarks in the official material for this game. Meeting a listed requirement therefore does not promise a particular frame rate, resolution, or preset.
Check whether your PC is in the right performance tier
Steam lists separate minimum and recommended configurations for the PC release. The game launched on PC in Early Access on September 16, 2025, and EA’s requirements article was published September 12, 2025. Because skate. is still an evolving Early Access title, requirements and graphics features can change with updates.

These are store-listed capability tiers, not laboratory measurements. A machine at the minimum tier may need substantially lower settings than a machine near the recommended tier, while a recommended-tier system may still need tuning for its display resolution, background workload, or a particular game build.
How to interpret a borderline system
- Below minimum: Expect unsupported or unreliable performance. Reducing settings cannot compensate for missing hardware or an unsupported operating system.
- Between minimum and recommended: Start with Custom settings and prioritize smoothness over lighting and shadow detail.
- At or above recommended: Begin with the global quality level that matches your visual preference, then tune only if you see hitching, frame pacing problems, or input delay.
Do not read the 4 GB and 12 GB graphics-memory figures as an FPS promise. They identify the GPUs in Steam’s example tiers; they do not state how many frames a given card will render.
Use the required control hardware
EA says keyboard and mouse are unsupported during PC Early Access, so a controller is required to play on PC. EA lists these examples: PS4 DualShock, PS5 DualSense, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, DualSense Edge, and Xbox Elite V1 or V2.

Confirm the exact model and whether you will use USB or wireless connection against the game’s current compatibility information before buying. A controller can make the game playable; it does not increase graphics performance or FPS.
EA also states that macOS and Linux are unsupported. Steam Deck is unsupported even though the store may show Steam Native support. Verify the current support position after major updates, because these statements come from the September 2025 Early Access documentation.
Choose a graphics baseline before fine-tuning
Ultra: image quality first
EA identifies Global Graphics Quality set to Ultra as the best-looking experience. Use it as a visual reference if your PC remains responsive, but do not treat Ultra as a required setting for play. If camera movement stutters or controls feel delayed, move down to Custom rather than accepting a poor experience for the sake of a preset label.
Custom: the troubleshooting starting point
Custom lets you lower the expensive-looking effects EA specifically names while preserving other options you may prefer. This is usually the most informative starting point because it shows which compromise your own system can tolerate. Make one adjustment, ride or move through the same type of scene, and compare the result before changing another option.
Why the three named settings come first
- Lighting Quality: Lowering it reduces lighting complexity and is one of EA’s explicit recommendations for a struggling PC. The visual cost is less elaborate illumination.
- Shadow Quality: Lower values reduce shadow detail. This can make surfaces and characters look less defined in shadowed areas, but it is a direct setting to test when performance is poor.
- Ambient Occlusion Quality: Lower values reduce the small contact-darkening effects that help objects appear grounded. The scene may look flatter, but this is another option EA specifically tells players to lower.
EA does not publish a percentage improvement for any of these changes. Describe the result in terms of your own smoothness and image-quality trade-off, not a guaranteed number.

A one-change-at-a-time tuning procedure
- Record the baseline. Note your current global preset, display resolution, and whether the problem is stutter, low responsiveness, or generally poor image quality. You do not need a benchmark score; a repeatable route or activity is enough for a before-and-after check.
- Switch to Custom if necessary. If you are on a high global preset and experiencing lag, change Global Graphics Quality to Custom. If the game already uses Custom, leave it there.
- Lower Lighting Quality. Apply the change, return to the same scene, and check camera movement and control response.
- Lower Shadow Quality. Test again without changing another option. Keep the setting only if the smoother result is worth the reduced shadow detail.
- Lower Ambient Occlusion Quality. Repeat the same comparison. Stop once the game is acceptable; lower settings are not automatically better if the visual compromise bothers you.
- Recheck after an update. Early Access builds can alter rendering behavior or menu options. If a patch changes how the game feels, retest your saved settings instead of assuming the old combination remains optimal.
This sequence is practical troubleshooting guidance, not an EA-published benchmark protocol. Its purpose is to isolate the setting that matters most on your PC and avoid losing track of which change helped.
Upscaling: what is known and what must be verified
EA’s September 2025 PC requirements article said that initial in-game support existed for AMD FSR and Intel XeSS, with more NVIDIA DLSS support planned. That is a dated statement about an Early Access build. It does not verify which versions, quality modes, or DLSS implementation are present in the current release.
Open the current graphics menu and update notes before relying on any upscaler. If FSR or XeSS appears, compare its available modes at your chosen resolution and check for image artifacts or loss of fine detail. If DLSS is listed in a later build, verify the supported GPU and modes in the current menu. Do not claim that an upscaler is available, recommended, or faster for every PC without checking that build.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Upscaling is also not a substitute for the controller requirement or for meeting the minimum hardware tier. It changes how frames are rendered; it cannot make an unsupported operating system or missing DirectX 12 capability compliant.
Separate graphics performance from gameplay feel
EA’s support guidance says there is no single perfect skate. setup. Settings should match personal preference and playstyle. Its control guide describes three controller presets:
| Preset | EA’s description | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| Streamlined | Suggested starting preset for beginners | A more approachable control and assistance setup |
| Classic | Similar to previous Skate games | A familiar control layout and feel for returning players |
| Experienced | Offers the most control, with assistance settings automatically lowered | More direct control and a higher challenge |
These presets affect control feel and assistance, not rendering workload. Changing from Streamlined to Experienced will not fix a graphics hitch, and lowering shadows will not make a control scheme easier. Choose the controller preset separately from the graphics settings so you can diagnose the right problem.
Diagnose the symptom before changing more settings
The game looks sharp but movement is uneven
Use the Custom procedure and test Lighting Quality first, followed by Shadow Quality and Ambient Occlusion Quality. Keep a change only when the same scene feels more consistent. Because no official FPS measurements are available, judge improvement by repeatable smoothness rather than a promised percentage.
The image is smooth but looks too flat
Raise the last setting you lowered, then retest. Ambient occlusion is often noticeable as contact shading, while shadows and lighting affect larger parts of a scene. Restore only one option at a time so you know which visual improvement costs the most on your system.

Controls feel wrong even when the picture is smooth
Review the controller preset and assistance choices. Streamlined is EA’s suggested starting point for beginners; Classic is intended to resemble earlier Skate games; Experienced lowers assistance and provides the most control. Do not treat this symptom as a graphics-quality problem.
The game will not respond to keyboard and mouse
That behavior is consistent with EA’s Early Access guidance: keyboard and mouse are unsupported on PC. Connect a supported controller from EA’s listed families and confirm its connection method in the current game and platform documentation.
Your platform is a Mac, Linux PC, or Steam Deck
EA’s September 2025 guidance lists macOS and Linux as unsupported and says Steam Deck is unsupported despite Steam Native support. A graphics-setting change cannot add platform support. Check current EA and Steam information after updates in case the policy changes.
What the requirements do—and do not—tell you
The minimum and recommended lists answer whether your components resemble EA and Steam’s published tiers. They do not specify a target FPS, frame-time consistency, supported resolution, monitor refresh rate, or which preset each tier can sustain. They also do not establish how much performance a particular setting change will recover.
For that reason, avoid claims such as “this setting gives 30 percent more FPS” unless a future, controlled test publishes that result. The defensible method today is to compare your own repeatable scene after each documented adjustment and select the lowest visual compromise that solves the problem.
A repeatable checklist for each update
- Confirm that the current build still lists the same controller and platform support.
- Check whether the game’s graphics menu has changed and whether FSR, XeSS, or DLSS options are present now.
- Record your current global preset and the three EA-named quality settings.
- Test the same activity before and after one change.
- Keep separate notes for visual quality, smoothness, and controller feel.
- Revisit settings after a major Early Access patch instead of assuming September 2025 behavior remains unchanged.
Recommended starting profiles
| PC situation | Starting point | Next decision |
|---|---|---|
| Meets only the minimum tier | Custom global quality; test Lighting, Shadow, and Ambient Occlusion at Low | Raise one option only if the game remains consistently responsive |
| Between minimum and recommended | Custom settings with the three named options reduced as needed | Restore visual detail one setting at a time |
| Meets the recommended tier | Begin with the quality level you prefer; Ultra is EA’s best-looking preset | Use Custom only when you observe a specific performance problem |
| Upscaling option visible in the current build | Compare the available modes at your chosen resolution | Keep the mode that improves smoothness without unacceptable artifacts |
These profiles are starting points, not guarantees. The same listed hardware can behave differently depending on the game version and the rest of the system, so the final choice belongs to the player’s own repeatable test.
Bottom line for smoother skate. sessions
Use a supported controller, verify your PC against Steam’s published tier, and begin performance troubleshooting with EA’s exact path: Global Graphics Quality to Custom or lower, then Lighting Quality, Shadow Quality, and Ambient Occlusion Quality to Low as necessary. Change one setting at a time and judge the trade-off on your own system. Keep controller presets separate from graphics tuning, and verify all upscaling and platform-support claims against the current Early Access build because the September 2025 documentation is version-sensitive.
