The fastest way to improve a struggling PC horror game is to identify the limit before changing settings. Check the game’s minimum and recommended requirements, confirm that it is using the intended GPU, record performance in a repeatable scene, then change one setting at a time. Start with the game’s supported upscaler or a lower render resolution, test ray tracing separately, and treat frame generation as an optional, hardware-dependent feature. There is no universal “best” preset: patches, GPU, display resolution and your target frame rate all change the answer.

Check the game and PC before touching graphics options

Open the game’s current system-requirements page and compare its CPU, graphics card, memory and storage requirements with your machine. Minimum requirements generally describe the ability to start and run the title, not a guarantee of a stable or high frame rate. If your PC only meets minimum specifications, official support guidance for demanding games recommends lowering graphics settings. If it falls below minimum, settings changes may not solve poor performance or launch failures.

Confirm the actual hardware

  • Check the processor model, installed memory and graphics card in Windows’ System Information or Task Manager.
  • On a laptop with integrated and discrete graphics, verify that the game executable is assigned to the high-performance GPU in Windows Graphics settings or the laptop maker’s control panel. A game running on integrated graphics can perform badly even when a suitable discrete GPU is installed.
  • Check free storage and install the game on a healthy drive with enough space for updates. Storage is not a substitute for a faster GPU, but a nearly full or unhealthy drive can create loading and streaming problems.
  • Connect a gaming laptop to AC power. Battery power plans can limit CPU and GPU performance.

Write down your display resolution and refresh rate. A 4K target requires much more rendering work than 1080p, while a 60-frame-per-second target has a different tolerance from a 120- or 144-frame-per-second target. Decide which matters most before selecting a preset.

Build a baseline you can reproduce

Do not judge a change while wandering through a different area. Pick a demanding, repeatable scene: the same corridor, fight, weather effect or saved checkpoint. Let the scene settle for a few seconds, note the frame rate and observe stutter, image clarity and controls. A built-in benchmark is useful when a game provides one, but a real gameplay scene can reveal streaming and combat spikes that a benchmark misses.

Use the game’s default preset as your starting point, or reset its graphics options if the configuration may be corrupted. Capcom’s Resident Evil 4 (2023) support guidance describes restoring the local configuration as a troubleshooting step for unstable frame rates; that procedure is specific to that game, so do not delete configuration files indiscriminately in another title. Record each change and test it in the same scene. One change at a time tells you both whether performance improved and what image-quality cost you accepted.

What to record

Measure Why it matters
Average frame rate Shows the general level of performance but can hide brief stalls.
Lowest or noticeably poor moments Reveals whether a fight, effect or area causes a hitch that makes horror-game controls feel uneven.
Frame pacing Even frame times can feel smoother than a higher average with repeated spikes.
Image quality Check fine details, foliage, hair, particles, reflections and dark-scene stability at your normal viewing distance.
Responsiveness Especially important when testing frame generation; a displayed frame-rate number does not guarantee the same input response as natively rendered frames.

Change settings in an efficient order

The order below prioritizes options that can produce a large performance change while making their visual trade-offs easy to evaluate. It is a testing sequence, not a universal ranking. A particular game or GPU may behave differently.

1. Set a sensible output resolution

If the game is rendering at a resolution higher than you need, lowering it reduces the number of pixels the GPU must produce. Test your monitor’s native resolution first, then try a lower resolution only if you can accept softer output or if the game has no effective upscaler. Use the same scene and compare distant text, thin geometry and dark edges; horror games often expose shimmering and reconstruction artifacts in shadows and fog.

2. Use the game’s supported upscaler

DLSS and FSR render internally at a lower input resolution and reconstruct an output closer to your selected display resolution. Select the implementation offered in the game, choose a quality-oriented mode first, and move toward balanced or performance modes only if needed. The visual result depends on the game’s implementation, mode, output resolution and GPU, so a label such as “Quality” is not a cross-game image-quality guarantee.

Prefer an integrated, in-game upscaler when one is available. AMD specifically recommends using FSR rather than driver-level Radeon Super Resolution when the game supports FSR, and warns against using both at once. Stacking them performs two scaling steps and can degrade image quality instead of delivering a clean performance gain.

3. Test ray tracing on its own

Ray tracing and path tracing can make lighting, reflections and shadows more realistic, but their cost varies sharply by title and hardware. Turn ray tracing down or off as a controlled test. If frame pacing improves substantially, decide whether a lower ray-tracing preset preserves the effects you value or whether conventional lighting is the better compromise. Do not lower several unrelated options at the same time; otherwise you will not know whether ray tracing was the limiting factor.

4. Adjust shadows, volumetric effects and reflections

After resolution and ray tracing, test the options that govern expensive lighting work. Lower shadow quality or shadow distance, volumetric fog and lighting quality, screen-space or other reflections, ambient occlusion, and heavy particle effects one at a time. These settings can matter greatly in scenes filled with fog, rain, smoke, mirrors or multiple light sources. Inspect faces, object edges and dark areas after each change; a small performance gain is not worthwhile if it removes the atmosphere that makes the game readable and enjoyable.

  • 16GB GDDR6 Memory on 128‑Bit Bus: Equipped with 16GB of high‑speed GDDR6 memory running at 20 Gbps, offering ample capacity and bandwidth for modern game textures and creative applications.

5. Tune textures according to memory, not just raw speed

Texture quality primarily affects video-memory use and can cause streaming stutter when the selected quality exceeds what the GPU can hold comfortably. If you see sudden stalls when entering new rooms, delayed texture loading or severe hitching rather than a consistently low frame rate, try lowering textures and texture filtering. When memory is adequate, reducing textures may produce little average-frame-rate improvement, so test for stutter and clarity rather than assuming the lowest setting is best.

6. Reduce secondary effects only as needed

Options such as effects quality, foliage density, view distance, hair or subsurface effects, anti-aliasing, motion blur and depth of field usually have smaller or more scene-dependent costs. Lower them after the larger levers above. Motion blur and depth of field are personal choices: disabling them can make the image appear clearer during movement without necessarily fixing a GPU bottleneck, while some players prefer the intended cinematic look.

Upscaling, resolution and image-quality decisions

Upscaling is most useful when the GPU is the limit and the game supports a suitable implementation. It does not make a CPU-limited scene faster, and it cannot repair a game that is using the wrong GPU or throttling because of heat or power. Compare each mode at your normal resolution in a dark, detailed scene. Look for crawling wires, unstable foliage, ghosting behind moving objects, halos around lights and loss of small text detail.

Choice Use it when Check for
Native resolution You have enough GPU headroom and want the clearest, most stable image. Whether frame-time spikes remain during effects-heavy scenes.
Quality upscaling You need a moderate performance improvement while retaining detail. Fine geometry, hair, fog and moving-character artifacts.
Balanced or performance upscaling You need a larger gain and can accept softer or less stable detail. Blur, shimmer and loss of readability at your viewing distance.
Lower output resolution The game lacks a satisfactory upscaler or the GPU is severely constrained. Scaling softness and whether your display handles the non-native signal well.

Frame generation is optional, not a universal fix

Frame generation creates additional displayed frames between conventionally rendered frames. It can make motion appear smoother when the game and GPU support it, but generated frames are not equivalent to independently rendered frames. Input response is still tied largely to the underlying rendered frames, and artifacts can appear around fast-moving objects, particles, HUD elements or sudden camera changes.

Support is title- and hardware-specific. Remedy’s update notes for Alan Wake 2 added FSR frame generation, while DLSS frame-generation modes vary by GPU generation. Check the current support information for your game and graphics card rather than assuming that any upscaler includes frame generation. First establish a reasonably stable base frame rate with ordinary rendering; enabling generation on an unstable base can make latency and visual artifacts more noticeable.

How to evaluate it

  1. Test the same scene with frame generation disabled and note frame pacing and control response.
  2. Enable the supported mode and repeat the scene.
  3. Compare camera movement, aiming, menus and fast combat, not just the displayed frame-rate counter.
  4. Keep it enabled only if the smoother motion outweighs any added latency or artifacts for your play style.

Ray tracing: decide what atmosphere is worth

Ray tracing can be particularly visible in horror games because wet floors, mirrors, flashlights, indirect light and deep shadows are central to the mood. It can also be one of the first features to overwhelm a GPU. Test the game with the highest ray-tracing option, a lower preset and ray tracing off; keep resolution and upscaling unchanged during the comparison.

For Alan Wake 2, NVIDIA’s 2023 guidance described lower ray-tracing presets and recommended Ray Reconstruction in that game-specific context. Remedy Lead Graphics Programmer Tatu Aalto said: “The new Ray Reconstruction feature in DLSS 3.5 renders our fully ray-traced world more beautifully than ever before, bringing you deeper into the story of Alan Wake 2.” That statement concerns Alan Wake 2 and should not be treated as a promise for every horror title.

Fix non-graphics causes of poor performance

Changing sliders cannot solve every hitch. Before buying hardware, work through the system conditions that can silently limit a game.

  • Background load: Close browsers, recording tools, launchers and other applications that consume significant CPU, memory, storage bandwidth or GPU resources. Re-test after closing them rather than assuming they are harmless.
  • Wrong GPU: Recheck the selected adapter, especially on dual-GPU laptops. The game’s video-options screen may identify the active device.
  • Power: Connect laptops to AC and select a performance-oriented power mode when appropriate.
  • Temperature and ventilation: Ensure air intakes and exhausts are unobstructed, clean dust from vents safely and avoid using a laptop on soft surfaces. Thermal throttling can lower performance after several minutes, so test a long enough session to reproduce the problem.
  • Drivers and patches: Install current graphics drivers and game updates when they are appropriate, but follow the named game’s current support page. Driver requirements in a vendor FAQ can be specific to one title and date.
  • Configuration: If performance became unstable after changing options, reset the game’s settings. Use a title-specific support procedure; do not copy a configuration-file deletion step from another game.

A practical step-by-step tuning procedure

  1. Read the current minimum and recommended requirements for the exact game edition and compare them with your CPU, GPU, memory and storage.
  2. Confirm the game is assigned to the intended GPU and connect a laptop to power.
  3. Close resource-heavy applications and check that ventilation is unobstructed.
  4. Reset to the game’s preset or a known-good configuration if settings may be corrupted.
  5. Choose a repeatable demanding scene and record average performance, visible stutter, image quality and control response.
  6. Keep your target output resolution and frame-rate goal explicit.
  7. Test the supported in-game upscaler, beginning with its quality-oriented mode.
  8. If the GPU is still limiting performance, test a lower upscaling mode or output resolution.
  9. Test ray tracing separately, then adjust shadows, volumetrics, reflections and effects in individual steps.
  10. Lower textures if video-memory pressure or streaming stutter is evident.
  11. Test frame generation only after the base rendering path is acceptably stable and only when the title and GPU support it.
  12. Repeat the same scene after every change and keep the setting only when the performance gain is worth the image-quality or responsiveness trade-off.

Use symptoms to choose the next test

What you see Likely first tests
Consistently low frame rate with clear GPU utilization Upscaling, output resolution, ray tracing, shadows, volumetrics and reflections.
Low frame rate in busy fights but acceptable performance elsewhere Effects, volumetrics, shadows, reflections and background applications; compare frame pacing in the same fight.
Hitches when entering rooms or loading new assets Texture quality, available video memory, storage health and background disk activity.
Performance starts well and falls after several minutes Temperature, ventilation, power mode and sustained GPU or CPU clocks.
Image is smooth-looking but controls feel delayed after enabling a feature Disable frame generation and compare responsiveness with the same base settings.
Settings changes have almost no effect Check for a CPU limit, wrong GPU, frame-rate cap, power limit or a configuration problem before lowering more visual options.

When a hardware upgrade is justified

Consider an upgrade only after comparing the exact game requirements with your system and measuring a repeatable hardware limit. A graphics-card upgrade is relevant when the GPU is consistently saturated, lowering resolution or demanding visual features produces a clear improvement, and your power supply, case and cooling can support a replacement. It is not an automatic answer when the game is using integrated graphics, a laptop is on battery, background software is consuming resources, temperatures are forcing throttling or a corrupted configuration is causing instability.

The available guidance does not identify one universally appropriate graphics card for all PC horror games. Requirements and rendering features differ by title, and a card that is sensible for one game, resolution or ray-tracing target may be excessive or insufficient for another. Diagnose first, then match an upgrade to the specific resolution, quality level and frame-rate target you actually intend to use.

What the official examples show

Alan Wake 2

Alan Wake 2 demonstrates why feature support must be checked per game. Remedy has documented FSR frame generation support, while DLSS frame-generation behavior depends on GPU generation. NVIDIA’s material for the game discusses lower ray-tracing presets and Ray Reconstruction, and its 2023 4.5× figure is limited to the stated GeForce RTX 40 Series, 4K, DLSS 3.5 and full-ray-tracing setup. Treat those details as an example of a game-specific configuration, not a preset recommendation for the entire horror genre.

Resident Evil 4 (2023)

Capcom’s support guidance illustrates two broadly useful habits: systems that meet minimum but not recommended requirements may need lower graphics settings, and restoring the local configuration can help when frame-rate behavior becomes unstable. The configuration procedure belongs to Resident Evil 4; for another title, use that game’s own support instructions.

Final decision framework

If you need the shortest reliable path, follow this sequence: verify requirements and GPU selection; remove power, heat and background-load problems; establish a repeatable baseline; enable the game’s supported upscaler; test ray tracing separately; tune shadows, volumetrics, reflections and textures; and evaluate frame generation only with compatible hardware and a stable base frame rate. Keep the setting that delivers the smoothness and clarity you can actually feel in the same scene, not the one that produces the most impressive number on a counter.
