Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe right performance fix depends on where the game is rendered. If a Windows game runs locally through an Android compatibility layer, the phone performs the rendering. If a PC runs the game and streams its video to Android, the host PC, encoder, network, decoder and phone display all contribute. Identify that path first; a setting that helps streaming can be irrelevant or harmful in local execution.
For streamed games, start by confirming that the host game itself is fast, then test a lower stream resolution (Steam Support uses 1280×720 as an example), compare hardware-encoding states, inspect the Android client statistics and reserve upload capacity for Internet streaming. For local Windows games, there is no evidence-backed universal preset: change one option at a time on the exact phone, compatibility layer, renderer and game version.

First, identify which Android setup you are using
“PC games on Android” describes two technically different arrangements. In local execution, game files and the compatibility layer run on the phone, so the Android device’s CPU, GPU, drivers and thermal limits determine frame production. In streaming, the Windows PC renders the game and sends compressed frames to Android; the phone mainly decodes, displays and returns input.

| Setup | Where frames are rendered | Main performance limits | Useful first tests |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local Windows-game execution | Android phone or tablet | Phone CPU/GPU, compatibility layer, renderer and driver path, game version, heat and memory | Lower in-game resolution or effects one at a time; verify results in the target game |
| PC-to-Android streaming | Windows host PC | Host game frame rate, host video encoding, network delivery, Android decoding and display | Check host frame rate, try 1280×720 as a reversible test, compare encoding options and inspect client statistics |
Do not confuse either setup with Google Play Games on PC. That product runs Android games on a PC; its developer guidance is not a settings guide for running Windows PC games on an Android phone.

How to improve streamed PC games on Android
1. Determine whether the host game or the stream is slow
Open the game directly on the host PC and observe the same scene you use while streaming. Steam Support states: “Low streaming framerate is usually caused by slow game framerate or slow encoding on the host computer.” If the game already has a low frame rate on the PC, reducing Android stream resolution cannot remove that rendering limit. Lower the host game’s graphics load first.
If the host game is smooth but Android playback stutters, the likely work is elsewhere: host encoding, network delivery, client decoding or the phone’s display path. Keep these causes separate so you do not sacrifice image quality to fix a problem that is actually caused by upload congestion or encoder overhead.
2. Use resolution as a diagnostic, not a universal preset
In the streaming client, lower the resolution limit and retest the same game scene. Steam’s troubleshooting guidance gives 1280×720 (720p) as an example starting point and also suggests trying a lower in-game display resolution. That number is a reversible diagnostic, not a claim that every Android screen, game or connection should use 720p.

- Record the current stream resolution, frame-rate target and bitrate.
- Change only the stream resolution to 1280×720, or the nearest supported lower option.
- Repeat the same camera movement or gameplay section for at least several minutes.
- If smoothness improves, resolution-related rendering, encoding, decoding or bandwidth load was contributing. Raise resolution one step at a time until clarity and consistency reach an acceptable balance.
- If nothing changes, restore the original resolution and investigate host frame rate, encoding and network conditions instead.
Lowering resolution can make small text and interface elements harder to read. A stable image at a slightly lower resolution is often more usable than a sharper stream that repeatedly freezes, but the choice depends on screen size and viewing distance.
3. Test the host’s hardware-encoding setting
Video encoding happens after the host renders each frame. Steam Support recommends trying the hardware-encoding option for the graphics card in use. Its documentation notes that results depend on the host GPU and says the relative behavior applies “in most cases,” not universally.

- Keep the game scene, stream resolution, frame-rate target and network unchanged.
- Run one trial with hardware encoding enabled.
- Run the same trial with it disabled, if the host software exposes that option.
- Compare dropped frames, visible hitching, image quality and host GPU/CPU load.
- Keep the state that produces the steadier stream on that particular graphics card; do not transfer the result automatically to another PC.
An encoder can be fast while the game itself is too demanding, or a game can render smoothly while the encoder cannot sustain the selected output. Treat encoding as a separate stage of the pipeline.
4. Inspect the Android client instead of guessing
Moonlight documents an on-screen statistics overlay for Android. Turn it on while testing and use it to compare repeated runs with the same resolution, frame-rate target, host and network. Moonlight cautions that client performance varies significantly with selected resolution, selected frame rate and client hardware. Its measurements also do not represent every form of system or display latency.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use the overlay comparatively: if changing resolution reduces decoder or rendering pressure and the stream becomes consistent, that is useful evidence for your device. Do not treat a value from one client as a universal benchmark or assume identically named metrics mean the same thing in another app.
5. Leave upload headroom for Internet streaming
When the PC and Android device are separated by the Internet, the host must upload the video stream continuously. Moonlight recommends setting streaming bitrate at least 1 Mbps below the host connection’s upload speed, leaving capacity for other traffic. For example, a measured 20 Mbps upload connection should not be driven at a 20 Mbps stream bitrate under that guidance.
This is specifically Internet-streaming advice. A fast local network can still suffer from Wi-Fi interference, congestion or a weak signal, while an apparently powerful Internet connection can have variable upload performance. If stutter appears during other uploads, backups or video calls, reduce bitrate or stop the competing traffic before lowering game graphics.

6. Tune frame rate after the pipeline is stable
Frame rate is the number of frames the host game produces and the stream attempts to deliver per second. A high target cannot compensate for a host game that cannot render that quickly, and it increases encoding, network and client work. Test a lower target when the phone or connection cannot sustain the current one, then compare consistency rather than a peak counter.
- Choose a target supported by both the streaming software and Android display.
- Keep resolution and bitrate fixed while comparing targets.
- Use the same repeatable scene and watch for dropped frames, uneven pacing and input response.
- Prefer the highest target that remains consistently delivered; avoid changing several limits simultaneously.
The available documentation does not prescribe one universal Android streaming cap. A stable lower target is preferable to a fluctuating higher target, but the appropriate value is specific to the game, host, phone and network.
A repeatable tuning order for streaming
Use this order to avoid masking one bottleneck with another:
- Host game performance: verify that the Windows game reaches the desired frame rate locally. Reduce demanding effects or the host game’s display resolution if it does not.
- Stream resolution: test 1280×720 as the Steam troubleshooting example, then raise it gradually if the stream has spare capacity.
- Host encoding: compare hardware encoding enabled and disabled with identical conditions.
- Stream frame rate: lower the target if delivery is uneven even though the host game is fast.
- Network bitrate: for Internet play, keep at least 1 Mbps below measured host upload capacity as Moonlight recommends.
- Android client: use Moonlight’s statistics overlay to identify changes in client-side performance.
Record each trial in a small table containing game scene, host frame rate, stream resolution, target frame rate, bitrate, encoding state and observed smoothness. Change one variable per trial. This makes it possible to undo a change and prevents a temporary network fluctuation from being mistaken for a graphics improvement.
What resolution should you use for PC games on your phone?
There is no single correct resolution. Choose the highest resolution that your complete pipeline can deliver without sustained stutter, while keeping text readable on the phone. Resolution increases the amount of image data the host renders or encodes and the Android client decodes; it can also raise bandwidth demand.

Local Windows games running through Android compatibility layers
Local execution needs a different method. The phone renders every frame, and performance can change with the exact device, Android version, compatibility-layer build, graphics API or renderer, driver path, game patch and thermal state. The available official guidance does not establish a benchmarked resolution, graphics preset, FPS cap, renderer or compatibility-layer version that works across phones and Windows games.
Use controlled, per-game changes
- Start with the game’s default settings and note resolution, graphics preset, frame-rate limit and renderer.
- Play a repeatable section long enough for the phone to reach its normal operating temperature.
- Lower one expensive option, such as shadows, effects or resolution, and test the same section again.
- Record frame pacing and visible stutter, not only the highest displayed FPS.
- Revert changes that do not help, then test the next option.
- Check current compatibility information for the exact phone, game version and software stack before changing renderer or driver components.
Do not copy the 720p streaming example into local execution as a guaranteed fix. It may reduce the phone’s rendering load, but it can also make text difficult to read and cannot solve a compatibility-layer fault, shader compilation hitch or thermal slowdown by itself. Likewise, a stream bitrate recommendation has no role when frames are rendered locally.
Recognize thermal and consistency problems
A game that begins smoothly and degrades after several minutes may be limited by heat rather than a single graphics option. Compare a short cold-start run with a longer session, keep the phone ventilated and avoid charging conditions that raise temperature if possible. Because no universal local benchmark is established here, report only what you observe on the specific device and software combination.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not apply Google Play Games on PC advice to Android phones
Google’s Android Developers guidance concerns developers preparing Android games for Google Play Games on PC. In that separate scenario, Google recommends using Vulkan up to version 1.1 where possible, using texture compression and avoiding texture transcoding where possible, and increasing or removing frame-rate limits when the game can run faster on PCs. Google says the platform supports resolutions up to 4K and recommends a cap of at least 60 FPS or no cap for games capable of exceeding it.
Those figures describe a PC-hosted Android-game platform, not a Windows PC game rendered on an Android phone. They should not be used as a promise that an Android handset can run a Windows title at 4K or 60 FPS, nor as a reason to remove a frame cap in a local compatibility layer.

Common symptoms and targeted fixes
Low FPS everywhere
If the host PC shows low FPS even when played locally, reduce the game’s graphics workload there. If the problem appears only in local Android execution, lower one phone-side setting and check compatibility-layer and renderer information for the exact title.
Good host FPS but choppy stream
Test host hardware encoding, then lower stream resolution or frame-rate target. Use the Android statistics overlay to see whether client-side performance changes. Check for Wi-Fi or Internet congestion before making large graphics reductions.
Sharp image with freezes during uploads
The stream may be consuming upload headroom. For Internet streaming, reduce bitrate so it remains at least 1 Mbps below the host’s upload speed, and remove competing traffic.
Consistent picture but delayed controls
Stable frame delivery does not prove low end-to-end latency. Moonlight’s client measurements do not include every system or display-latency component. Compare local versus Internet play, reduce network contention and use a direct, reliable connection where available; do not claim that a graphics reduction alone eliminates all delay.
Controller and display considerations
A Bluetooth controller compatible with Android can make streamed games easier to play. Moonlight documents passing gamepad input to the host as a virtual Xbox 360 controller. A controller changes input ergonomics; it does not increase FPS, improve graphics quality or guarantee lower latency.
For readability, evaluate the game’s interface at the actual phone size. Raising stream resolution may help small text, while a game-specific UI-scale setting can improve legibility without demanding the maximum possible output resolution. Keep visual clarity and smooth frame delivery as separate decisions.
Quick Recap
A compact decision checklist
- Is the game rendered on Android or on a remote Windows PC?
- Does the host game maintain its target frame rate before streaming?
- Did a controlled 1280×720 stream test change smoothness?
- Did hardware-encoding enabled and disabled trials produce different results?
- What does the Android client statistics overlay show under identical conditions?
- For Internet play, is bitrate at least 1 Mbps below measured host upload speed?
- Are you changing only one setting between comparisons?
- For local execution, have you checked the exact phone, game version, compatibility layer and renderer rather than using a universal preset?
