You cannot directly set a MOBA’s hidden rating, force a particular teammate mix, or guarantee that a blocked player will never reappear. You can, however, make better queue decisions, understand why a fair average can still feel uneven, and use mute and report tools without turning one toxic player into a lost game. Riot’s guidance for League of Legends provides the clearest documented example; Dota 2 uses different terminology and policies, so its mechanics should be treated separately.
What players mean by “bad matchmaking”
“Bad matchmaking” is usually several different frustrations bundled together. Separating them helps you choose a remedy that the game actually supports.

Skill mismatch
A player may appear much stronger or weaker than you expected. In League of Legends, Riot says the matchmaker uses Matchmaking Rating (MMR) to place players on the ladder and find similarly skilled opponents. MMR is not the same thing as the rank and League Points (LP) shown on your profile. Rank and LP are visible progression measures; MMR is the rating used for matchmaking and can move on a different schedule.

Uneven team composition
Two teams can have similar average MMR while having different internal distributions. One side might contain a very high-rated player and several lower-rated players, while the other has five players closer to its average. The arithmetic can be balanced even when the individual matchups feel lopsided. A single difficult lane, role assignment or player having an unusually good game is not proof that the entire matchmaker failed.

Position or role mismatch
Finding five players with compatible skill ratings and preferred positions at the same moment is harder than finding ten players with a similar average rating. Riot explicitly notes that position matching can be altered as a queue continues. A player may therefore receive a less-preferred position in exchange for a shorter search or a closer overall rating.
Long queues
Waiting is not a simple “quality slider.” Riot explains that, as players wait longer, the system may search farther from their MMR or change position matching while still trying to keep the game fair. A longer wait creates more opportunity to find a closer fit, but it can also trigger a broader search. There is no official universal cutoff at which a queue becomes safe or unsafe.
Hostile communication
Abusive chat, spam, griefing and intentional disruption are behavior problems, not evidence that the skill algorithm deliberately created a toxic lobby. The official League guidance does not promise that toxicity reports will produce a permanently clean queue or that a reported account will be excluded from every future match.
MMR, visible rank and behavior systems are different things
League of Legends: MMR is the matchmaking input
Riot’s explanation distinguishes the rating used to find opponents from the rank displayed to players. Treat the visible badge and LP as progress information, not as a complete description of the hidden value used to build a game. Two players with the same displayed rank can have different MMR histories, and two players whose displayed ranks differ can still be placed together if their matchmaking ratings are sufficiently close for the queue’s current conditions.
This distinction also explains why a recent promotion, demotion or win streak does not instantly make every lobby look different. The matchmaker is working with its rating model, while the visible ladder display follows its own progression rules. Without access to Riot’s internal data, you cannot infer an exact MMR or prove that a particular opponent was placed incorrectly from the loading screen alone.

Dota 2: use the cited 7.33 explanation only as a version-specific reference
Dota 2‘s update 7.33 described MMR as Rank plus Rank Confidence and said confidence declines when a player goes without matches. That is the terminology and behavior described in that update, not a universal rule for every MOBA and not a guarantee that all details remain unchanged in a later patch. Check the current in-game or official patch documentation before treating Rank Confidence as live, unchanged mechanics.
Do not transfer one game’s rules to another
Games can differ in how they calculate rating, form teams, handle parties, evaluate conduct and apply penalties. An explanation that fits League’s MMR and position queue should not be presented as a description of Dota 2 or another MOBA. When a developer has not documented a specific mechanism, describe the player-visible effect and the uncertainty rather than inventing an algorithm.

The wait-time trade-off
At the beginning of a queue, the system has a narrow time window and a limited pool of available players. As the timer grows, it can either continue waiting for a closer match or relax one of its constraints. Riot’s documented possibilities include moving farther from a player’s MMR or changing position matching. That means “wait longer” is not guaranteed to improve the next lobby, and “leave immediately” is not guaranteed to avoid an imperfect one.
Use the timer as information about availability, not as a promise about match quality. If you are tired, tilted or unwilling to play an off-position role, declining the queue and returning later may be the sensible personal choice. Do not claim that a particular minute of the day, a fixed timer value or an off-peak schedule is officially optimal; the cited guidance provides none of those thresholds.
Average rating versus the five individual players
Suppose each team’s average MMR is close. That can still hide different spreads: one team may be tightly clustered, while the other combines a standout player with less experienced teammates. The result can produce a crushing lane, an apparently impossible objective fight or a player who looks “out of place,” even though the team averages are similar. This is a limitation of interpreting a group average, not enough evidence to diagnose the exact cause of your match.

Role constraints add another variable
Role or position preferences reduce the number of acceptable combinations. If a queue is short on a particular position, the system may trade a perfect position match for a workable one. A player receiving a secondary role can therefore be the result of the documented queue compromise rather than an error in skill rating.

Before you press “find match”
- Set a conduct boundary. Decide in advance that you will mute personal attacks instead of debating them. This prevents a hostile message from choosing your next action.
- Choose the mode and roles you can actually play. If you cannot accept a secondary position, do not queue while expecting the system to guarantee your first choice.
- Check your own readiness. Fatigue and frustration make ordinary mistakes feel like proof of a rigged queue. Taking a break is a player-controlled way to reduce stress, regardless of the algorithm.
While the queue is running
- Watch the elapsed time, but do not treat a specific number as an official quality threshold.
- If the wait becomes unacceptable, cancel or decline and try again later rather than assuming that staying forever must produce a closer MMR match.
- When a position is assigned, evaluate the actual role and teammates after the lobby forms. Do not infer the hidden ratings from visible rank alone.
After a match that felt unfair
- Write down what you observed: the role you received, the type of communication that occurred and the concrete gameplay issue. “The match felt bad” is less useful than “a teammate repeatedly insulted others” or “the two teams had visibly different role experience.”
- Separate a rating complaint from a conduct complaint. A skill or composition concern belongs to your understanding of matchmaking; abusive chat belongs in the game’s reporting workflow.
- Review your next queue decision independently. One lopsided game does not establish a trend, and one pleasant game does not prove that a permanent filter exists.
How to handle a toxic League of Legends lobby
Mute first, then keep playing
Riot’s player-reporting guidance gives a direct sequence: “Focus on victory by muting the offending player and then reporting them at the end of the game.” Muting removes the immediate channel for the disruption while leaving you free to play your objectives. Do not retaliate in chat, threaten the player or abandon your responsibilities to organize a report campaign.
Report only conduct you actually encountered
Use the post-game report flow for behavior that warrants it. Riot’s guide says a League player can report someone they encountered as a teammate or opponent within their last 20 games. That 20-game window and workflow are League-specific; they should not be generalized to every MOBA or assumed to be identical in another region or client version.
Do not ask teammates to pile on simply to increase a count. Riot warns that players who answer negativity with their own disruptive behavior can also be assessed for their conduct. A report is not a license to continue the argument, sabotage the match or punish an entire team for one person’s messages.
When the behavior is gameplay disruption
Describe the observable conduct through the available category rather than guessing at intent. Repeated abusive messages, deliberate disruption and other reportable actions should be recorded through the game’s own form. Avoid making public accusations based only on a difficult scoreline; poor play and punishable behavior are not automatically the same thing.

How Dota 2’s cited guidance differs
Negative-behavior reports and low-priority matchmaking
The cited Steam support guidance for Dota 2 says negative in-game behavior reports can lead to low-priority matchmaking. It does not establish a universal threshold, duration or current penalty formula, so do not promise a specific result after a particular number of reports.
Technical abandons affect the other players
The same guidance warns that a technical abandon harms the other nine players. If a connection or device problem occurs, treat recovery and reconnection as a team-impact issue rather than assuming an abandon is harmless. The policy statement does not provide a guaranteed grace period or a current numerical penalty schedule in the cited material.
Keep Dota and League workflows separate
Do not carry League’s 20-game reporting window, position-matching explanation or MMR terminology into Dota 2. Use each game’s current client and support documentation for its own report categories, penalties and rating display.
“Why do you continue to match me with players I block/mute/report?”
Riot addressed this exact question in a developer article about repeat encounters. Blocking, muting and reporting are useful for reducing the immediate impact of a player and flagging conduct to the operator; they are not presented as a permanent avoid-player guarantee. You may therefore encounter the same account again.
The developer explanation dates from 2018. It is useful for understanding why a repeat encounter can occur, but it should not be treated as a complete description of the current matchmaking implementation. Do not assert an unconfirmed cause such as queue size, party composition, region or a hidden avoidance rule unless Riot documents that mechanism for the current service.
Best Value
A repeat encounter also does not prove that a report was ignored. Reporting and matchmaking exclusion are separate outcomes, and the public guidance does not expose a case-by-case decision or promise a visible response for every report.
What you can influence—and what you cannot
| Player-controlled action | What it can change | What it cannot guarantee |
|---|---|---|
| Mute a disruptive player | Reduces the immediate effect of their chat or messages on your attention. | It does not permanently remove that account from future queues. |
| Report after the game | Submits conduct information through the operator’s review system. | It does not guarantee a penalty, a response message or automatic future avoidance. |
| Leave or decline a queue | Lets you choose not to enter a lobby when the wait or your readiness is unacceptable. | It does not reveal a better hidden rating or ensure the next queue is closer. |
| Accept a secondary position | Allows the queue to form under its documented position trade-offs. | It does not make every player’s role experience equal. |
| Keep playing instead of retaliating | Protects your own conduct record and preserves your team’s chance to finish the game. | It cannot control another player’s behavior. |
The most reliable improvement is therefore behavioral and procedural: make a deliberate queue choice, mute promptly, finish when you can, and report through the supported workflow. The matchmaker’s rating, team distribution and search constraints remain outside your direct control.
How to tell whether a pattern is real
Track observations, not assumptions
If several games feel poor, record the mode, role, queue wait, visible rank range and the specific conduct or gameplay issue you observed. This creates a factual pattern without pretending that you can see hidden MMR. A short run of difficult games can occur without proving that the system changed its rules or targeted your account.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCompare like with like
Keep separate notes for solo and party queues, different modes and different positions. Mixing them makes a role shortage or party composition look like a single matchmaking defect. The official explanations do not provide a universal cross-mode formula, so comparisons should stay within the same game’s documented context.
Escalate only through official channels
Use the in-client report flow and the game’s support site for a conduct or technical issue. Avoid third-party “avoid player” tools or services that claim to alter matchmaking; no evidence in the cited guidance establishes that an external tool can change the operator’s queue or guarantee a safer lobby.
A low-stress checklist for your next session
- Queue only for a mode and set of positions you can reasonably play.
- Remember that visible rank is not the same as the rating used for matchmaking.
- Interpret a long wait as a trade-off, not a guaranteed improvement.
- Expect a fair team average to contain different individual skill distributions.
- Mute the first disruptive player instead of arguing.
- Finish the game when possible and report afterward through the correct game’s workflow.
- Do not organize a report pile-on or answer abuse with abuse.
- Do not assume a block, mute or report is a permanent future-player filter.
- Check current patch and support notes before applying League rules to Dota 2 or another MOBA.
These steps cannot make every lobby even or every teammate polite. They do give you control over the parts that matter most to the next match: your queue decision, your attention during play and the way you document and report misconduct.
