Most wireless-headset audio problems are fixed by checking the selected devices, mute state, microphone level, and game/chat balance in that order. Echo and dropouts need separate fixes: lower the microphone level for feedback, and address USB-device placement or the internet connection for interruptions. The exact controls depend on your console and headset, so use the PS5, PS4, or model-specific path below rather than changing every volume setting at once.
This guide covers PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 instructions documented by PlayStation Support, plus controls for the PULSE 3D, PULSE Elite, and Gold Wireless Headset. It does not assume the same menus or buttons exist on Xbox, Windows, macOS, or another headset.

Identify the symptom before changing a setting
Different symptoms point to different controls. First decide which of these best describes what you hear or what other people report:
- Other players cannot hear you: check the selected input, mute state, microphone position, and input meter.
- Your voice is too quiet, distorted, or cuts in and out: test the input meter, then adjust microphone level cautiously.
- You hear an echo: lower microphone level and remove possible speaker feedback; do not simply raise game or chat volume.
- You hear game audio but not chat, or chat masks the game: adjust the game/chat balance control.
- The headset disconnects or audio skips: check USB-device placement and reset the headset before assuming the headset is defective.
- Party chat disconnects while the headset remains connected: check the console’s internet connection as well as the headset.
Make one change at a time and test with the same party or game. That tells you which control actually affected the symptom.

Start with output, input, and mute
A wireless headset can be powered on and still not be the device the console is using. Confirm routing before touching advanced options.
PS5: select the output and input devices
- Open Settings > Sound > Audio Output.
- Check Output Device and select the connected wireless headset rather than the television, receiver, or another device.
- Open Settings > Sound > Microphone.
- Check Input Device and select the headset microphone.
- In the same Microphone area, check the microphone level and the console or controller mute state. A muted headset cannot send a usable signal regardless of the level setting.
These are separate choices: Output Device controls what you hear, while Input Device controls what the party hears from you. Selecting only one of them can create the impression that the headset is partly broken.
PS4: use the different audio-device path
- Open Settings > Devices > Audio Devices.
- Confirm that the wireless headset is selected for the available input and output device controls.
- Choose Adjust Microphone Level to test and set the microphone.
- Check the headset’s physical mute control and the controller mute state before testing.
PS4 does not use the PS5 Sound menu path. Following PS5 directions on a PS4 will leave you looking in the wrong place.

If the indicator is lit, unmute before changing the level. Use the input meter to prove whether the microphone works
On PS4, open Settings > Devices > Audio Devices > Adjust Microphone Level and speak normally. The Input Volume bar should react to your voice. This test separates a routing or hardware problem from a game-specific chat problem.
- Bar moves but others still cannot hear you: the console is receiving audio, so check the party or game chat settings and the headset’s mute state again.
- Bar does not move: verify the selected input, unmute the headset, and try another headset or controller. PlayStation specifically recommends the second-device test to isolate whether the headset or controller is at fault.
- Bar moves only when you speak very close to the mic: check that a retractable or boom microphone is fully extended and positioned for use, then set a sensible level rather than maximum gain.
On PS5, use Settings > Sound > Microphone to confirm the input device and watch the microphone level response while speaking. The objective is a clear, consistent meter response, not the highest possible level.
Set microphone level for clarity, not loudness
Microphone level controls how strongly the console sends your voice into chat. Raising it can make a quiet voice audible, but too much level can produce distortion or feed game and speaker sound back into the microphone. If the meter already responds clearly, leave the level near its working position and investigate routing, balance, or the physical microphone instead.

- Confirm that the correct headset input is selected and that the mic is unmuted.
- Speak at your normal gaming distance rather than directly into the capsule.
- Increase the microphone level a small amount.
- Ask a party member whether the change made your voice clearer, then stop increasing once it is intelligible.
If your voice is distorted
- Lower the microphone level slightly.
- Keep the microphone in its intended position instead of touching or covering it.
- Retest with the same game or party so that a different chat mix does not confuse the result.
There is no universal “best” slider position because voice distance, headset model, and the console’s input path differ. A stable meter response and intelligible speech are better targets than maximum volume.

Balance game audio and voice chat
If the microphone works and both audio streams are present, the problem may be relative level rather than quality. Adjust the control that changes the relationship between game sound and chat; do not raise every master volume.
PS5 voice-chat balance
PS5 provides voice-chat balance controls on its voice-chat card. Use that balance when you can hear the party but the game masks it, or when chat is so loud that game effects disappear. Move the balance gradually and have a party member speak while game audio is active. The balance changes the relative prominence of the two streams; it does not repair a muted microphone or a disconnected input.
PULSE 3D: CHAT/GAME buttons
The PULSE 3D headset has separate CHAT and GAME buttons for relative game and chat volume. Press the side corresponding to the stream you need to emphasize, then test again. Pressing both buttons together resets the relative balance. If the buttons do not affect a particular title, check the platform and game’s chat behavior before concluding that the headset is faulty; not every game supports every headset balance function in the same way.

How to tell a balance problem from a game problem
- If party speech is audible in the console interface but disappears only inside one title, check that game’s voice-chat and output options.
- If the game is loud everywhere and chat is quiet everywhere, use the PS5 voice-chat balance or the headset’s CHAT/GAME control.
- If neither stream is audible, return to Output Device selection and headset power or connection checks rather than changing the balance.
Stop echo and feedback
Echo occurs when your microphone captures your own voice, a party member’s voice, or sound from speakers and sends it back into chat. PlayStation’s headset troubleshooting guidance gives a specific adjustment for PS5 and PS4: “Slide the Microphone Level fader 2 to 4 notches to the left.” This is a troubleshooting step, not a universal permanent setting.
PS5 echo procedure
- Open Settings > Sound > Microphone.
- Lower the microphone-level fader by two to four notches.
- Ask the party to listen while you speak normally.
- If the echo remains, reset the wireless headset using its model-specific reset procedure.
PS4 echo procedure
- Open Settings > Devices > Audio Devices > Adjust Microphone Level.
- Move the microphone-level slider two to four notches to the left.
- Retest in party chat.
- If the echo continues, reset the headset.
Remove speaker feedback
The Gold Wireless Headset instruction manual warns that leaving the headset near speakers while the microphone is active can cause feedback. Use the headset’s earcups for game sound during the test and move it away from active speakers. This addresses an acoustic loop; it does not change the wireless radio connection or microphone sensitivity by itself.
Do not try to cure echo by increasing chat volume. Louder playback can give the microphone more sound to capture and make feedback worse.

Handle interruptions as a connection and placement issue before buying a replacement. PlayStation’s guidance is conditional: nearby USB 3.0 devices can interfere with some wireless-headset setups, so changing the physical arrangement is a low-cost test, not proof that interference is the cause in every room.

- Remove unnecessary USB 3.0 devices from the console and test the headset again.
- If several USB devices or wireless adapters are connected, use a USB extension cable to place the headset’s wireless adapter farther from those devices.
- Keep the adapter in a position with a clear path to the headset rather than pressed against a cluster of USB hardware.
- If skipping or disconnection remains, reset the headset according to its model instructions.
A USB extension cable in this situation changes adapter placement only. It does not improve microphone quality, add game/chat controls, or guarantee a fix. Verify that the connector and the adapter arrangement are compatible with your console before using one.
When party chat disconnects but the headset stays on
A flashing voice-chat icon or a party that disconnects can indicate an internet connection problem rather than a microphone fault. PlayStation recommends checking the console’s internet connection and, if possible, testing with a wired internet connection. Compare the result in the same party: if the headset remains powered and game audio continues while party chat drops, investigate network stability before changing microphone level or EQ.
- Check whether the console reports an internet error at the same time as the voice-chat icon flashes.
- Try a wired connection if one is available, then repeat the party-chat test.
- If only one game loses chat, inspect that game’s voice-chat configuration after confirming the console connection.

When another headset or controller is the right test
If the PS4 Input Volume bar does not react after you have confirmed the input selection and mute state, connect another headset or controller and repeat the meter test. A working second device narrows the fault to the original headset or its connection. If neither device produces a response, the console, controller connection, or selected input remains suspect.

Consider replacement only after these checks identify a device failure and you have confirmed console compatibility. A complete troubleshooting order
- Name the symptom: microphone, balance, echo, dropout, or party connection.
- Select devices: PS5 uses Settings > Sound > Audio Output and Settings > Sound > Microphone; PS4 uses Settings > Devices > Audio Devices.
- Unmute and position the mic: extend a PULSE Elite microphone and confirm its indicator is off; check headset and controller mute controls.
- Watch the input response: use the PS4 Input Volume bar or the PS5 microphone controls; test another headset or controller if there is no response.
- Set microphone level: raise it only when speech is too quiet and lower it when speech distorts or echoes.
- Balance streams: use the PS5 voice-chat card or the model’s CHAT/GAME control when both streams work but one masks the other.
- Remove echo: lower the microphone level two to four notches, move away from speakers, and reset the headset if needed.
- Address dropouts: remove nearby USB 3.0 devices, separate the wireless adapter with an extension cable when appropriate, and reset the headset.
- Check the network: if party chat disconnects or its icon flashes, test the internet connection and a wired connection if possible.
- Isolate hardware: only after the previous tests, compare with another compatible headset or controller.
This order prevents a common mistake: using a game-volume control to compensate for an unselected microphone, or buying hardware before testing the connection and console settings that actually govern the symptom.
