To improve Mates in Uncharted Waters Origin, use Conversation for one Mate’s loyalty or Speech for the whole roster, then promote Mates, learn and activate useful effects, train expertise when eligible, and assign each Mate to a compatible cabin. Low loyalty or an injury can prevent a Mate from using skills and abilities.
Restore loyalty so Mates can use their abilities
LINE Games’ Mate guide says loyalty decreases as your fleet sails. Its routine recovery options differ by how many Mates they affect:

Check the roster for Mates with low loyalty, then use Conversation when you want to raise a particular Mate or Speech when the roster-wide option is ready. The 4-hour and 24-hour intervals are mechanics stated in LINE Games’ guide, updated 2023-05-24; if the live interface differs, follow its current cooldown display.
Loyalty is not the only reason a Mate may be unable to contribute. LINE Games’ Tavern guide says Mates with low loyalty or injuries cannot use their skills and abilities. Check for injuries as well as loyalty when an expected ability is unavailable.

Know what you are developing: skills, effects, and expertise
LINE Games’ Basic Growth Guide distinguishes skills from effects: skills are mostly active abilities, while effects are mostly passive bonuses. Skills include Naval Combat Skills and Duel Skills; equipment can enhance or grant some skills.
Effects are learned as Mates level and spend relevant in-game resources. Learning one is not enough by itself: assign it as an activated effect for its benefit to apply. Promotion status determines how many effects can be applied, so consider both what a Mate has learned and which effects are actually activated.

Promote Mates to unlock more development
Promotion is the main progression step for gaining skills and effects. LINE Games says Mates can be promoted up to four times; promotion also improves expertise and raises the maximum number of applicable effects. Check the Mate’s level and material requirements in-game before spending promotion materials.

Training uses promotion materials and books. The guide names tasks, the palace contribution store, and the guild contribution store as sources for books. Expertise points can be allocated to combat, adventure, or trade, so choose according to the Mate’s intended role.

A separate progression option has changed since the older guides: LINE Games’ 2026 update notice says Mate Transcendence expanded to Stage 3 and, at the time of that notice, was available only for S Grade Mates. Check the current in-game requirements and eligibility before committing scarce items.
Match each Mate to the right cabin and role
A Mate’s expertise only helps when the Mate is assigned appropriately. LINE Games says an incompatible cabin assignment reduces expertise by 50%, while an unassigned Mate’s skills and expertise do not affect gameplay. Use the Mate menu’s detailed stats and the ship cabin screen to check the intended role and compatibility.

- Ship expertise affects the ship to which the Mate is assigned. Combat specialties include Artillery, Ramming, Support, and Melee.
- Fleet expertise affects the wider fleet. The guide lists Nature, Aesthetics, Scouting, Supply, Purchasing, Sales, Negotiation, and Trade.
Choose a compatible cabin whose role fits the expertise you want to use. If you have several Mates with the same useful skill on one ship, LINE Games says that repeated skills increase that skill’s strength. That can make stacking a shared skill worthwhile, while other assignments can cover different ship or fleet needs.

- Check the roster: identify low loyalty, injuries, and Mates who are slacking or not assigned to a cabin.
- Restore loyalty: use Conversation for an individual Mate or Speech for all Mates when their respective cooldowns are ready.
- Review development: check level and promotion requirements, then promote Mates you intend to build out. Learn effects and activate the ones that suit the role.
- Train eligible Mates: after maximum promotion, consider expertise training and allocate points to combat, adventure, or trade as appropriate.
- Check cabin fit: assign each Mate to a compatible cabin and verify the placement supports the desired ship or fleet role.
- Recheck after sailing: loyalty decreases during sailing, so revisit the roster when abilities stop working as expected.
Mechanics and requirements may change: LINE Games’ core Mate guide was updated 2023-05-24, its Basic Growth Guide 2023-05-08, and its Tavern guide is dated 2022-05-25. Use the live game’s labels and requirements if they differ from those guides.
