How to Improve Low-Light Footage on a DJI or Insta360 Action Camera

Start by adding light and stabilizing the camera, then choose a low-light mode and exposure settings that match the amount of motion in the scene. A slower shutter or higher ISO can make a dark image brighter, but a slow shutter smears moving subjects and high ISO reveals more noise. DJI and Insta360 implement these controls differently, so use the model-specific starting points below and verify them against your camera’s current firmware.

What actually improves dark action-camera footage

Low-light quality is mainly an exposure and motion problem. The sensor receives fewer photons at night or indoors, so the camera must collect light for longer, amplify the signal more, or apply heavier processing. Each choice has a cost:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • More environmental light raises exposure without asking the camera to amplify an extremely weak signal. A lamp, work light or portable LED video light can preserve more detail and color than simply pushing ISO.
  • A slower shutter lets in more light, but moving people, vehicles or the camera itself can become visibly blurred.
  • A higher ISO brightens the image electronically, while making digital noise and loss of fine detail more obvious.
  • Low-light processing can improve brightness and noise reduction, but usually has narrower frame-rate or feature support than ordinary Video mode.
  • Electronic image stabilization (EIS) can smooth handheld movement, yet it needs usable image information and suitable motion conditions. In a very dark scene, stabilization processing can sometimes produce a worse result than an unstabilized clip.

There is no single shutter, ISO or stabilization setting that works for every DJI or Insta360 camera. The correct choice depends on whether the scene is static, how fast the subject moves, and which modes your exact model and firmware provide.

Choose settings by scene before touching the controls

Scene Best first move Main risk
Static subject, tripod or firm support Use the camera’s dedicated low-light mode; allow a slower exposure if the camera is not moving. Any movement during the exposure still creates blur.
Walking or slowly moving people Add light, keep the camera steady and use low-light processing with a moderate shutter. Faces and hands can soften if the shutter becomes too slow.
Fast action, cycling or vehicles Prioritize a faster shutter and as much available light as possible; test stabilization in the real scene. The faster shutter may leave the clip darker or noisier.
Handheld panning in darkness Try the model’s low-light EIS option, then compare an EIS-off clip from the same position. Stabilization may crop, warp or fail when the scene has too little detail.
Mixed artificial lighting Use the camera’s anti-flicker option where available and test under the actual lights. Banding or brightness pulsing can remain if the power frequency and setting do not match.

For a stationary shot, brightness and clean detail matter more than freezing motion. For action, a bright but smeared clip is usually less useful than a slightly darker clip with recognizable movement. Make that decision before selecting a mode.

Prepare the scene and camera

Add light before raising ISO

DJI’s low-light guidance recommends increasing environmental brightness whenever possible, such as turning on a lamp. Place a light so it illuminates the subject rather than pointing directly into the lens. A portable LED video light is useful for controlled or stationary scenes; its mounting, waterproofing and compatibility with a particular camera are not guaranteed, so treat it as general scene lighting rather than a camera accessory.

Move the light closer before making it much brighter. This often gives the camera more usable light while avoiding a harsh hotspot. Keep the light outside the frame, and check reflective surfaces such as wet roads, windows and helmets for glare.

Stabilize the camera physically

  • Use a tripod, clamp, fixed mount or two-handed grip for static scenes.
  • Brace your elbows and avoid touching the camera during a long exposure.
  • For a moving walk, keep the camera close to your body and use smooth steps rather than relying entirely on EIS.
  • Clean the lens and remove a smudged protective cover; point light sources reveal haze that can look like low-light noise.

Set the recording format deliberately

Higher frame rates generally require the camera to expose each frame for less time, which leaves less light per frame. If your subject does not need slow motion, start with the low-light mode’s recommended frame rate instead of selecting a high frame rate by habit. Insta360’s PureVideo modes, for example, support a narrower range of frame rates than ordinary Video mode on the Ace series.

Exposure controls: shutter, ISO and frame rate

Shutter speed

A longer shutter collects more light but records movement across the exposure, causing motion blur. This is acceptable for a locked-off view of a building or landscape and usually unacceptable for fast sports. A faster shutter freezes movement more effectively but may require more light or a higher ISO.

Do not lock every camera at 1/30 second. That value can brighten a static view, but it can also turn a moving subject into a smear. Conversely, DJI’s support guidance for the Osmo Action 4 and Osmo Action 3 specifies a shutter speed of at least 1/200 second for its low-light recommendations. DJI presents that as model-specific guidance; in very dark conditions, the resulting image may be darker and need additional light.

ISO

ISO controls electronic amplification. Raising it can rescue an underexposed clip, but noise becomes easier to see in shadows and flat walls. Increase ISO only after using all practical light and selecting a shutter appropriate for the motion. Avoid treating ISO 12800 as a target; DJI lists an ISO range of 100–12800 in its Osmo Action 4 and Osmo Action 3 low-light support guidance, not as a promise of clean footage at every value.

Auto versus manual exposure

Auto exposure is convenient when the camera moves between bright and dark areas, but it can change brightness during a shot. Manual exposure is more consistent for a fixed scene. If you use manual controls, review a short test clip at the intended playback size; a setting that looks acceptable on the camera screen can show noise or blur on a larger display.

DJI Osmo Action starting points

Osmo Action 5 Pro

DJI lists Active SuperNight as a dedicated low-light option for the Osmo Action 5 Pro. Begin with that mode for a dark scene, hold the camera as steadily as possible and add environmental light if available. DJI also lists EIS Priority in Low Light with PRO mode disabled. If the result still has distracting artifacts or does not suit the movement, record a comparison with EIS turned off. These are support recommendations for this model, not universal settings for every action camera.

  1. Open the shooting mode that exposes the camera’s low-light or SuperNight option.
  2. Select Active SuperNight when the scene is genuinely dark and the camera’s on-screen guidance permits it.
  3. Leave PRO mode disabled if you are following DJI’s EIS Priority in Low Light recommendation.
  4. Make a short clip with stabilization enabled, then repeat the shot with EIS disabled from the same position.
  5. Keep the version that preserves the subject’s edges and motion most naturally, not simply the brighter one.

Osmo Action 4 and Osmo Action 3

DJI’s low-light support article for these generations discusses manual exposure, ISO 100–12800, a shutter speed of at least 1/200 second, and EIS Priority in Low Light with PRO mode disabled. It also recommends testing EIS off. Use the fast-shutter suggestion when motion must remain legible; expect a darker image in extremely low light and compensate with lamps or a lower frame rate where the camera allows it.

For a general Osmo Action 4 low-light profile, DJI’s cheat sheet lists 4K at 30 frames per second, Auto shutter, Auto ISO, low-light enhancement when available, RockSteady stabilization and Auto exposure value. The same sheet gives different frame-rate and field-of-view entries for particular activities, so do not assume the general profile is correct for a night bicycle ride, a talking-head vlog and a locked-off landscape alike.

DJI workflow for a moving night shot

  1. Switch to 4K/30 as the initial Osmo Action 4 profile if your scene does not require another frame rate.
  2. Turn on the camera’s available low-light enhancement or model-specific low-light feature.
  3. Use EIS Priority in Low Light only with PRO mode disabled when that option is listed for your model.
  4. Record a five- to ten-second pass with the subject moving at the intended speed.
  5. Repeat with EIS off if edges wobble, the image swims, or stabilization appears to magnify noise.
  6. If motion is still blurred, add light or increase shutter speed rather than simply raising ISO.

Insta360 Ace-series cameras

PureVideo on the Ace series

Insta360 describes PureVideo as a low-light mode for supported Ace-series cameras. Its official FAQ notes that PureVideo has a narrower frame-rate range than Video mode and that shutter speed is automatically matched to ambient light in PureVideo. That automation can simplify night recording, but it also means you have less direct control over the shutter trade-off than in a fully manual mode.

Use PureVideo when the scene is dark and the available frame rates fit your project. If you need a frame rate that PureVideo does not support, ordinary Video mode may be the practical alternative; add light and keep the camera steady to offset the loss of specialized processing.

Ace Pro 2

For the Ace Pro 2, Insta360 recommends PureVideo at 4K/30 for low-light scenes. Its guidance separates motion into two cases: Anti Flicker for non-intense motion and Jitter Blur Reduction for intense motion. Select the control that matches the action rather than enabling every processing option automatically.

  1. Choose PureVideo and set 4K/30 when your scene and project support that format.
  2. For people standing, slow walking or other non-intense movement under artificial lights, try Anti Flicker.
  3. For intense movement, try Jitter Blur Reduction and check whether detail remains natural.
  4. Record a short test under the exact lights and movement you will use; processing behavior can change with firmware.

Insta360 X-series cameras

Current recommendations for the X6 and X5 list PureVideo for night or low-light scenes, but the supported resolution and frame-rate combinations are model-specific. Open the guide for your exact camera before choosing a numerical setting. A setting that exists on one X-series generation may be absent or limited on another.

Insta360 GO Ultra and Auto PureVideo

GO Ultra’s PureVideo mode is designed for low-light environments. Its guide warns that slower shutter behavior can create motion blur and documents Jitter Blur Reduction as one available option. GO Ultra Auto PureVideo can switch modes according to ambient light, but it has format and feature restrictions. Do not assume Auto PureVideo exists or behaves the same way on another Insta360 model.

For a static or gently moving shot, let PureVideo prioritize brightness and use a stable support. For running, riding or rapid panning, compare Jitter Blur Reduction with a faster-shutter setup and accept that the faster option may be noisier or darker.

When stabilization helps—and when to switch it off

Stabilization is not automatically beneficial in darkness. EIS needs enough texture and contrast to estimate camera movement. A nearly black wall, a single point light or heavy noise can make those estimates unreliable. DJI specifically advises checking footage with EIS disabled if the result is unsatisfactory and cautions that stabilization without suitable electronic-stabilization conditions can reduce results.

Symptom Test Keep
Walking footage looks smooth but edges bend or pulse Repeat the same path with EIS off. The version with straighter edges and acceptable shake.

Low-light troubleshooting

The image is bright but very blurry

The shutter is probably too slow for the subject. Add light first, then increase shutter speed or choose a motion-oriented control such as Jitter Blur Reduction where supported. Do not solve motion blur by raising ISO alone; ISO changes brightness, not the movement recorded during the exposure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The image is dark and noisy

Reduce the frame rate if your chosen mode permits it, add environmental light, and use the camera’s dedicated low-light mode. Lower ISO only after the scene is bright enough to expose the subject; an underexposed low-ISO clip can be harder to recover than a correctly exposed higher-ISO clip.

Stabilization looks worse than handheld footage

Record a matched EIS-off test. If the unstabilized clip has cleaner edges and no unacceptable shake, use physical support or a slower, more deliberate camera movement instead of relying on EIS.

Lights flicker or bands move through the frame

Use Anti Flicker where your Insta360 model provides it, and test under the actual indoor lighting. Flicker behavior depends on the light source and electrical frequency, so a setting that works in one room may not work in another.

The low-light option is missing

Check the exact model, shooting mode, resolution and frame rate. PureVideo, Active SuperNight, EIS Priority in Low Light and related controls are not universal. Firmware updates can also change labels, restrictions and supported combinations; consult the current manufacturer guide for your camera.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A repeatable night-shooting procedure

  1. Identify motion. Decide whether the subject is static, walking or moving quickly.
  2. Add practical light. Turn on nearby lamps or position a portable LED video light outside the frame.
  3. Secure the camera. Use a tripod, mount or firm two-handed grip.
  4. Select the dedicated mode. Try Active SuperNight on supported DJI models or PureVideo on supported Insta360 models.
  5. Choose a sensible frame rate. Start with the mode’s recommended rate; do not select high-speed recording unless you need it.
  6. Match shutter to motion. Accept a longer exposure for static scenes; use a faster shutter for action, knowing the frame may be darker.
  7. Control ISO conservatively. Raise it only as needed after lighting and shutter decisions.
  8. Test stabilization. Record matched clips with the recommended low-light EIS option and with EIS off when the first result looks unstable or warped.
  9. Review at full size. Check moving edges, faces, shadow noise, flicker and exposure changes on the device where the footage will be edited.
  10. Save the working setup. Note the camera model, firmware, mode, frame rate, shutter, ISO and stabilization choice for the next shoot.

How to choose between ordinary Video mode and low-light processing

Priority Prefer dedicated low-light processing when… Prefer ordinary Video or manual exposure when…
Maximum brightness in a dark, slow scene The supported frame rate and format meet your needs and the camera can remain steady. You need a frame rate or feature excluded by the low-light mode.
Fast movement The mode offers a motion-specific control and still preserves subject detail. Automatic slow-shutter behavior creates unacceptable blur.
Predictable brightness across a shot The mode’s automatic exposure remains stable in your lighting. You need a consistent manual exposure for editing or a fixed setup.
Maximum control The low-light mode exposes the controls you need. You must set shutter, ISO or frame rate directly.

Compare clips made from the same camera position and subject movement. A brighter preview is not necessarily a better recording if texture has been replaced by noise or moving edges have been smeared.

What the manufacturer guidance does—and does not—establish

DJI and Insta360 publish model-specific recommendations, not a universal performance ranking. The documented figures such as ISO 100–12800, a shutter of at least 1/200 second for specified Osmo Action generations, and 4K/30 recommendations for certain modes are starting points, not measured low-light performance statistics. Official pages do not establish that one brand consistently outperforms the other in every dark scene.

Menu names, supported frame rates and processing behavior can change with firmware. Before a paid or one-time shoot, confirm the current guide for the exact camera, record a short test in the actual location, and keep the settings that preserve the detail and motion your project needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I always use the slowest shutter available at night?

No. A slower shutter helps a stationary camera collect light but can blur moving subjects. Choose the slowest exposure that still preserves the motion you need.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is high ISO worse than adding a light?

Adding light usually gives the sensor a stronger signal without as much amplification, so it is the better first step when practical. High ISO remains useful when you cannot add light, but it can reveal more noise.

Why does my low-light mode not offer the frame rate I want?

Dedicated modes often support fewer frame rates than ordinary Video mode. Insta360 documents this limitation for PureVideo on the Ace series; check your exact model’s supported combinations.

Should stabilization be disabled for every night shot?

No. Test the model’s recommended low-light stabilization option and an EIS-off clip in the same scene. Keep whichever has the cleaner edges and acceptable shake.
