To improve indoor air quality during wildfire smoke and haze, first follow local safety instructions, then create one closed, cool “cleaner-air room,” filter it continuously, stop activities that generate particles, and ventilate only when outdoor air improves. Smoke can still enter a closed building through fresh-air intakes, exhaust fans, cracks, and other small openings. Indoor filtration reduces exposure but never replaces evacuation orders or a safe place to shelter.
This U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) approach works for houses and apartments, with adjustments for your HVAC system, room size, heat, power availability, and local air-quality conditions. Check live information from AirNow, your state or local air-quality agency, and emergency-management officials because smoke and evacuation status can change quickly.

Start with immediate safety and current conditions
Wildfire smoke contains gases and fine particles. The fine particles are the main health threat identified by EPA because they can irritate the eyes and respiratory system and penetrate deep into the lungs. A closed home can still receive smoke through open windows and doors, mechanical ventilation, HVAC fresh-air intakes, exhaust fans, and infiltration through cracks and joints.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf a fire is nearby, heavy smoke or ash is present, or authorities issue an evacuation or shelter instruction, follow that instruction. EPA describes a nearby fire, heavy smoke, and ash as potentially serious and immediate risks to safety and health. A filter or air cleaner is not a reason to remain in an unsafe location.

Use live local information
- Check the current Air Quality Index (AQI) and smoke map through AirNow or your state or local air-quality agency.
- Read local emergency alerts for evacuation zones, road closures, power outages, and shelter locations.
- Recheck conditions during the day. Wind, fire behavior, and atmospheric mixing can change smoke concentrations rapidly.
- Treat the guidance here as general U.S. federal advice, not as a local AQI reading or an evacuation notice.
Know when indoor shelter is not enough
Leave or move to a cleaner-air location if officials direct you to do so, the fire threatens your area, smoke and heat cannot be controlled, or a power failure makes the building unsafe. If windows must remain closed but the home becomes dangerously hot, EPA advises opening windows during a less-smoky period or seeking shelter elsewhere. Never block an exit while trying to seal a room.
Create a cleaner-air room
A cleaner-air room is a practical household strategy: concentrate filtration and your time in one comfortable room rather than trying to make every space equally clean. A bedroom with an attached bathroom can work well because people can stay there without opening an exterior door repeatedly.
Choose and prepare the room
- Select a room large enough for the people who will use it for several hours. Choose one with few windows and doors if possible, but do not select a room that leaves occupants without a usable exit.
- Close windows and exterior doors. Keep interior doors closed when that helps contain cleaner air, while preserving a safe path out.
- Close or switch to recirculation on HVAC fresh-air controls if your system provides that option. Outdoor-air intakes bring smoky air inside.
- Use a portable air cleaner or central HVAC filtration in the room. Keep the cleaner’s intake and outlet clear of curtains, furniture, bedding, and walls.
- Use air conditioning, a window air conditioner, or fans that do not draw smoky outdoor air to keep the room cool. A fan that only recirculates indoor air can improve comfort, but it does not remove particles by itself.
- Spend as much time as practical in the cleaner-air room, especially when outdoor smoke is worst.
Be careful with exhaust fans
Long-running bathroom exhaust fans, kitchen range hoods, and other exhaust systems can pull smoky air through cracks and leaks when outdoor air is contaminated. Avoid operating them for extended periods in the cleaner-air room. Use them briefly when needed for moisture or cooking safety, then turn them off.

Manage heat without sacrificing safety
Keeping windows closed can make a room hot. Use cooling equipment that recirculates indoor air, close blinds on sunny windows, and reduce heat-producing activities. If the room becomes uncomfortably or dangerously hot, open windows during a period when outdoor air is less smoky or relocate to a cleaner-air shelter. Heat illness is a more immediate danger than preserving a closed room at all costs.

Choose a filtration strategy
The right option depends on whether your home has forced-air HVAC, whether you need to protect one room or several, and whether commercial equipment and electricity are available. The choices below are complementary rather than a universal ranking.
| Option | Best fit | Selection and use criteria | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Central HVAC filter | A forced-air furnace or central air conditioner that can run its fan continuously | Use MERV 13 or higher if the equipment can accommodate it; install a snug, undamaged filter; run the fan as often as practical | Airflow capacity and compatibility vary by system; a technician or manufacturer may be needed to confirm the correct filter |
| Portable air cleaner | One occupied room, a home without forced-air HVAC, or supplemental filtration | Smoke CADR at least two-thirds of the room area in square feet; choose little or no ozone emission; place near occupants with unobstructed airflow; run continuously at high speed when practical | Purchase cost, replacement filters, electricity, noise, and physical size vary; one unit may not clean an entire home evenly |
| DIY box-fan cleaner | A temporary, lower-cost option when a commercial cleaner is unavailable or unaffordable | Use a high-efficiency filter, preferably MERV 13 or higher; align airflow arrows; seal gaps; use a box fan made since 2012 with a UL or ETL logo | Performance varies with assembly, sealing, fan, filter, and maintenance; it may be louder and is not an equivalent tested or permanent substitute for a commercial cleaner |
Use central HVAC filtration safely
If your home has a forced-air furnace or central air conditioner, EPA recommends a high-efficiency filter such as MERV 13 or higher when the equipment can handle it. A higher-rated filter can increase airflow resistance. Do not install a filter that the system cannot support.
- Check the filter size and the equipment manual or manufacturer guidance. If compatibility is unclear, ask a qualified HVAC professional.
- Turn off the system before removing the old filter.
- Install the new filter in the direction shown by its airflow arrow. The filter should fit snugly without bending, crushing, or leaving large gaps around the frame.
- Set the thermostat fan from “Auto” to “On,” or use the highest practical fan-circulation setting, so air passes through the filter more often.
- Keep the system on recirculation while outdoor air is smoky if your controls allow it. Close or disable a fresh-air intake only as the system instructions permit.
- Inspect the filter during a prolonged smoke event. Replace it when it is visibly dirty, clogged, or due for replacement under the manufacturer’s instructions.
If the system struggles to start, overheats, makes unusual noises, or produces weak airflow after a filter change, turn it off and obtain professional advice rather than forcing operation.
Select and operate a portable air cleaner
Calculate the minimum smoke CADR
EPA’s sizing rule is a smoke clean air delivery rate (CADR) of at least two-thirds of the room area in square feet. The calculation is:

Minimum smoke CADR = room area in square feet × 2/3
| Room area | Minimum smoke CADR under EPA’s rule |
|---|---|
| 150 square feet | 100 CADR |
| 300 square feet | 200 CADR |
| 600 square feet | 400 CADR |
These are arithmetic examples of EPA’s selection criterion, not independent performance tests. If a room has unusually high ceilings, an open floor plan, frequent door opening, or heavy smoke leakage, a larger-capacity unit or more than one unit may be needed.
Prioritize low- or no-ozone operation
Choose a cleaner designed to emit little or no ozone. EPA recommends CARB-certified air cleaners for this purpose. Do not assume that an ionizer, plasma feature, or “ozone-generating” mode improves safety; disable such features when the manufacturer allows it, and avoid devices that intentionally generate ozone in occupied rooms.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Place and run the unit correctly
- Put the cleaner in the room where people spend time, with clearance around the intake and outlet.
- Keep airflow unobstructed by walls, drapes, furniture, or bedding.
- Run it continuously at the highest fan setting that occupants can tolerate while smoke is present. A lower setting is quieter but moves less air.
- Keep doors and windows closed as much as practical. Opening the door briefly is preferable to leaving it ajar.
- Check the filter according to the device instructions. Replace or clean it when it is dirty or begins to smell smoky; follow the manufacturer’s method for cleaning, since not every filter is washable.
Noise, power use, replacement-filter availability, and physical dimensions are practical trade-offs. No specific product model or price has been independently tested for this guidance.

Build a temporary DIY box-fan cleaner
When a commercial portable cleaner is unavailable or unaffordable, EPA describes a temporary option made from a box fan and one or more furnace filters. It is not a tested equivalent to a commercial cleaner, and its performance depends on the fan, filter, sealing, room, and maintenance.
- Use a box fan manufactured in 2012 or later and bearing a UL or ETL safety logo.
- Attach a high-efficiency furnace filter, preferably MERV 13 or higher, to the fan’s intake side.
- Match the airflow arrow on the filter to the fan’s airflow direction.
- Seal gaps between the filter frame and fan housing so air cannot bypass the filter. A rigid cardboard shroud can improve sealing on some designs.
- Keep the assembly stable, away from water and walkways, and leave the fan’s outlet unobstructed.
- Inspect the filter and connections regularly. Replace a loaded filter or repair a loose seal.
Do not leave a makeshift assembly unattended if it becomes unstable, overheats, or shows damaged wiring. A DIY unit should be treated as a short-term measure, not a permanent substitute when a properly sized commercial cleaner is available.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Stop adding particles indoors
Filtration works better when the household stops creating additional smoke and fine particles. During a smoky period:
- Do not smoke or vape indoors.
- Avoid burning candles or incense and using aerosol sprays.
- Do not operate fireplaces or gas, propane, or wood-burning appliances unless they are required for safety and properly vented.
- Avoid frying, broiling, and other high-heat cooking. Use a microwave or other lower-emission method when practical.
- Postpone strenuous indoor exercise, which increases the amount of air you breathe.
- Avoid vacuuming unless the vacuum has a HEPA filter. Ordinary vacuums can redistribute fine dust.
- Use a damp cloth or mop to capture settled dust instead of dry dusting.
Handle ash after the fire
For ash or dusty residue on hard surfaces, dampen the surface and wet-mop it, or use a vacuum with a HEPA-type filter. Avoid dry sweeping, which can put settled particles back into the air. Wear the protective equipment recommended by local public-health or cleanup authorities, and follow any warnings about contaminated materials.

Ventilate after outdoor air improves
A sealed room is a temporary response to smoky outdoor air, not a permanent ventilation plan. When your local AQI and smoke conditions improve, open windows and doors for a controlled period to replace stale indoor air. Re-enable normal fresh-air ventilation and use exhaust fans as appropriate for moisture and cooking.
Check conditions before ventilating and close openings again if smoke returns. Avoid assuming that a short improvement will last; wildfire smoke can move back into an area with changing wind.
Adapt the plan to common home situations
Apartment or rental with no HVAC access
Use a room with a closable window and door, operate a correctly sized portable cleaner, and ask building management whether the central system has a fresh-air or recirculation control. Do not alter a shared ventilation system without permission. Keep hallways and exits clear.

Use the compatible MERV filter and frequent fan operation for whole-home circulation, then place the portable cleaner in the room where people sleep or spend the most time. Close the fresh-air intake during smoke only when the equipment instructions allow it.
No electricity or equipment available
Close windows and doors, stop indoor particle sources, and move to a cleaner-air public shelter or another location if heat or smoke becomes difficult to tolerate. Filtration advice cannot make a powerless, overheating home safe.
Maintain the room and troubleshoot problems
| Symptom | Likely issue | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Smoke smell persists | Openings, fresh-air intake, exhaust fan, or a saturated filter are allowing smoke in | Check windows and doors, switch HVAC to recirculation if allowed, limit exhaust use, inspect filters, and relocate to a better-sealed room if necessary |
| Portable cleaner has weak airflow | Blocked intake/outlet or loaded filter | Clear surrounding space and inspect or replace the filter according to the manual |
| HVAC airflow drops after a new filter | Filter resistance exceeds system capacity or filter is installed incorrectly | Turn the system off if it strains, verify size and direction, and ask the manufacturer or an HVAC technician about a compatible rating |
| Room becomes too hot | Closed windows, high occupancy, or insufficient cooling | Use recirculating cooling, reduce heat sources, open windows only during a less-smoky period, or seek a cooler cleaner-air location |
| DIY fan assembly is unstable or overheats | Poor support, blocked airflow, damaged fan, or unsafe wiring | Turn it off, correct the setup only if safe, or stop using it and obtain a safer cleaner |
Consider health needs and symptoms
People with asthma, chronic lung disease, heart disease, older adults, children, pregnant people, and anyone whose clinician has supplied a smoke or respiratory plan may need additional precautions. Follow the individual’s medical plan and public-health instructions rather than relying on an indoor air cleaner alone.
Move to cleaner air and seek medical help for serious or worsening breathing difficulty, chest pain, confusion, fainting, or other emergency symptoms. An indoor particle sensor can help you notice changes, but EPA does not provide a universal sensor reading that guarantees a room is safe. A single number cannot replace AQI information, evacuation instructions, temperature checks, or attention to symptoms.
