To get a more reliable Suunto running track, wait for GPS to acquire before starting, sync the watch with the Suunto app, and use the highest GPS accuracy setting your model offers when detail matters. To extend runtime, select a lower fix rate only when its less-detailed track is acceptable, and reduce other power drains such as backlight and wrist heart-rate monitoring. Menu names and features vary by watch and software.
Prepare the watch before you start running
- Move to a clearer sky view. Trees, tall buildings, bridges, metal structures, mountains, ravines, water, and thick humid clouds can weaken GPS signals. If possible, begin in an open area rather than beneath cover.
- Wait for GPS acquisition. Start the exercise only after the watch’s searching indicator confirms GPS is ready. Give it additional time in difficult terrain, or when the activity needs to download GPS data.
- Sync the Suunto app. Suunto recommends syncing before a GPS exercise to refresh Assisted GPS data. On supported models, check its timestamp under Settings > General > About. If it is older than a day or shows N/A, sync and check again; labels can vary by model and software.
- Install current watch software. Suunto says software updates improve the software and address possible bugs. Check the update process for your specific watch.
Choose GPS detail or longer battery life
GPS accuracy settings control how often the watch records position. Shorter intervals generally capture more track detail; longer intervals use less battery but leave more time without a fresh GPS position. Suunto summarizes the tradeoff this way: “By reducing GPS accuracy, you can extend the battery life of your watch.” The right choice depends on route conditions, desired track detail, run duration, and remaining charge.

| Watch or setting | Approximate GPS fix interval | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Suunto 9 / 9 Baro — Best | About 1 second | Most detailed of these settings; Suunto lists Best GPS accuracy as a high battery impact. |
| Suunto 9 / 9 Baro — Good | About 60 seconds | Uses less battery than Best, but leaves long gaps between GPS position fixes. |
| Suunto 9 / 9 Baro — OK | About 120 seconds | Lower fix rate for longer runtime; do not expect continuous GPS position data between fixes. |
| Suunto 5 Peak — Best | About 1 second | Its user guide documents this interval; route or POI navigation automatically sets GPS accuracy to Best. |
| Suunto 5 Peak — Good | About 60 seconds | Its guide documents this interval. The Suunto 9 / 9 Baro OK interval and FusedTrack instructions do not apply by default. |
Intervals are approximate figures from Suunto’s model-specific guidance, not universal settings for every Suunto watch. Suunto’s general advice for Suunto 9 and Suunto 5 is to use Performance mode or a custom mode with Best when track quality is the priority. Endurance and Ultra modes use lower fix rates. Check your own watch’s options rather than assuming the same mode names or intervals apply.
When a lower fix rate can make sense
Consider a lower-accuracy mode when the activity is long, battery is limited, or uninterrupted fine-grained track detail is not essential. On Suunto 9 and 9 Baro, FusedTrack can use motion-sensor data between GPS fixes for Running and Trail Running when Good or OK is selected in Endurance, Ultra, or a qualifying Custom mode. It is model- and activity-specific, is not available on all Suunto watches, and Suunto says it is unavailable on Suunto 9 Peak. Do not assume it smooths tracks on other models or activities.

Decide whether to use additional satellite systems
In dense forest, canyons, or cities with tall buildings, additional satellite systems such as GLONASS or Galileo may help on supported watches. They are not a guaranteed accuracy improvement in every setting, and they increase battery use. Choose based on the route’s obstructions rather than leaving extra systems enabled as a universal default.
Available systems and menu paths differ by model. Suunto’s guidance describes GPS+QZSS combinations with GLONASS, Galileo, or BeiDou for Suunto 5, 5 Peak, 9, and 9 Peak, and a separate GLONASS procedure for Spartan watches. Confirm which systems and settings your watch actually offers. In Suunto 9 battery guidance, adding GLONASS or Galileo to GPS is categorized as a medium battery impact; GPS+QZSS is suggested when saving power.

Reduce other battery drains
GPS is only one part of running-watch battery use. Suunto’s Suunto 9 guidance categorizes settings by relative impact; it does not quantify the savings, and its categories are not guaranteed rankings for every model.
Recommended Free Tools
| Suunto 9 guidance category | Settings | Possible adjustment |
|---|---|---|
| High impact | Best GPS accuracy; backlight on | Use Good GPS accuracy only if its longer fix interval suits the run. Prefer normal backlight behavior where practical. |
| Medium impact | Multiple satellite systems; always-on display; full-color display; wrist HR | Disable extra systems when route conditions do not call for them; consider a 10-second display timeout and low-color mode where available. |
| Low impact | Touch | Suunto lists touch as low impact; changing it is unlikely to be the main runtime lever. |
Suunto also notes that low temperatures and frequent autolaps, sound, or vibration can shorten battery life. The precise effect depends on watch, settings, and conditions. If your model supports the sensor, a chest heart-rate belt compatible with your watch can replace wrist HR when seeking to reduce that particular drain; verify sensor compatibility first. A chest belt is not a GPS-accuracy upgrade.

Troubleshoot a missing signal or inaccurate track
- If GPS does not become ready: move to a more open sky view and wait longer before recording, especially around terrain or structures that obstruct the signal.
- If the problem continues: perform the soft reset specified for your watch model, then sync with the Suunto app and check that Assisted GPS has a current timestamp.
- Check model and software settings: confirm the watch software version and verify the GPS accuracy and satellite-system options available on that exact model.
- If POI coordinates seem wrong after travel: Suunto advises changing a country-specific position format to an international format such as WGS84, UTM, or MGRS.
Suunto’s official support guidance does not provide a quantified percentage of battery improvement for these adjustments. Actual runtime and track quality depend on model, configuration, route, and conditions.
