How to Improve Gaming Performance Without Upgrading Your Graphics Card

You can often make a game feel smoother without replacing the GPU, but the size of the improvement depends on what is limiting performance. Start by identifying whether CPU, memory, storage activity, software, or the game’s graphics workload is the problem. Then apply reversible changes in order: close unnecessary processes, update Windows and drivers, free storage, test Windows gaming options, and lower the most expensive in-game settings one at a time.

Start with a diagnosis, not a preset

“Poor performance” can mean several different things: a low average frame rate, brief stutters, long pauses while a level loads, sudden drops during effects, or an uneven frame-time pattern that feels bad even when the average frame rate looks acceptable. Each symptom can have a different cause, so changing every graphics option at once makes it difficult to know what helped.

Microsoft lists limited storage, too many startup or background applications, outdated software, malware, and hardware that no longer meets current demands among possible reasons a Windows PC feels slow. Its performance guidance recommends checking resource use in Task Manager before deciding what to change: Microsoft’s Windows performance tips.

Record a baseline

Before changing anything, write down the game, display resolution, graphics preset, window mode, and the exact symptom. Reproduce the same scene or sequence after each change. If the game has an internal frame-rate counter or frame-time graph, use it; otherwise, compare the same repeatable area rather than relying on memory.

  • [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.
  • Low frame rate all the time: the game may be asking the GPU or CPU to do more work than the system can sustain.
  • Stutters when entering areas: background disk activity, memory pressure, shader compilation, or asset streaming may be involved.
  • Sudden drops during fights or weather effects: a particular rendering option may be expensive, or the CPU may be busy with simulation.
  • Performance deteriorating during a long session: heat, power limits, or a background process that gradually consumes resources deserves attention.

These observations do not prove a cause, but they tell you which test to run first. Do not assume a graphics-card upgrade is the only answer before checking whether the GPU is actually the component under pressure.

Use Task Manager while the problem is happening

Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc while the game is running, then inspect the Processes and Performance views. Look at CPU, Memory, Disk, and GPU activity during the exact moment you notice a slowdown. Microsoft specifically recommends monitoring resource use and closing applications you recognize but do not need.

What the readings suggest

  • CPU near full utilization while the GPU is not consistently busy: simulation, game logic, an overlay, browser tabs, recording software, or another process may be limiting frame delivery.
  • Memory nearly full and disk activity rising: Windows may be moving data between memory and storage, which can cause hitching. Close unneeded programs before launching the game.
  • Disk use remains high: an update, scan, synchronisation job, or another application may be competing with game loading. Identify the process rather than ending random system tasks.
  • A background process suddenly consumes resources: pause or close it only if you recognize it and it is safe to do so. Do not terminate an unfamiliar Windows process simply because its name looks technical.

A safe cleanup procedure

  1. Exit the game or use an unimportant menu area if you need time to inspect the desktop.
  2. Sort Task Manager by CPU, Memory, and Disk in turn.
  3. Close browsers, launchers, media applications, virtual machines, and overlays that you opened and do not need for the session.
  4. Leave security software and essential Windows processes alone unless you are following the product’s documented troubleshooting procedure.
  5. Restart the game and reproduce the same scene. Record whether the symptom changed.

Closing a background application cannot make a GPU render beyond its physical capability. It helps when that application was competing for CPU time, memory, or storage access.

Perform the Windows maintenance steps that cost nothing

Microsoft’s recommended general performance actions are useful housekeeping, but they are not a guarantee of higher frame rates in every title. Apply them before making difficult changes.

Install Windows and applicable driver updates

Open Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, and install updates that apply to your system. Check Advanced options > Optional updates for applicable driver updates. Restart when Windows requests it, then test the game again.

Driver labels and release timing differ by graphics-card vendor and model. Use the driver channel intended for your hardware, and avoid installing a driver package for a different GPU family. If a new driver introduces a problem, use the vendor’s supported rollback or previous-driver procedure rather than repeatedly installing unrelated packages.

Scan for malware when usage is unexplained

If Task Manager shows persistent CPU, memory, or disk activity that you cannot explain, run a malware scan with your installed Windows security tools before blaming the game. A scan is especially appropriate when the slowdown is present on the desktop as well as in games. Microsoft includes malware scanning among its Windows performance recommendations: Microsoft’s guidance.

Free storage without deleting needed files

Low free space can reduce overall Windows performance. In Settings > System > Storage, review what is consuming space and remove only files you recognize as unwanted. Temporary files can be cleaned with Windows’ storage tools; do not delete game saves, project files, or folders whose purpose you do not understand.

After freeing space, restart Windows. Storage cleanup is most likely to help when the system drive was nearly full or when heavy disk activity was competing with game loading. It does not turn a graphics-limited scene into a faster one by itself.

Restart instead of leaving a session running indefinitely

A restart clears stuck background processes and completes updates that are waiting for a reboot. It is a simple diagnostic step: if a fresh boot fixes the problem temporarily, look for the application or service that returns when the session becomes busy.

Choose Windows power settings with their trade-offs in mind

On supported Windows systems, Settings > System > Power & battery > Power mode includes a Best performance option. Microsoft says this mode can help the processor run at higher performance when needed, but it uses more power. On a laptop, that can mean more heat, faster battery drain, and less time away from the charger: Microsoft’s power-mode guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Best performance as a controlled test, preferably while the laptop is connected to its charger and placed where its vents are unobstructed. If frame delivery does not improve, return to a balanced mode. A warmer laptop can reduce sustained performance if it reaches a thermal limit, so the setting is not automatically better for every system or every session.

Try Windows 11 optimizations for windowed and borderless games

Windows 11 includes Optimizations for windowed games. Microsoft says the feature improves performance for compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running in windowed or borderless-window mode by transitioning them to the flip presentation model. It does not apply universally to every game or API.

How to enable it

  1. Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
  2. Turn on Optimizations for windowed games.
  3. Apply the setting, then completely close and restart the game. Microsoft specifically instructs users to restart the title after changing this option: Microsoft’s Windows 11 documentation.

If the game is already running in exclusive full-screen mode, this particular optimization may not be relevant. If it causes a visual or input problem in a specific title, turn it off for that test and compare using the same scene.

Select a preferred GPU for a particular app

Systems with more than one GPU can use the same Settings > System > Display > Graphics area to choose a per-app graphics preference when Windows exposes that option. Add the game’s executable, choose the intended preference, save it, and restart the game. The available choices depend on the hardware and Windows configuration; a single-GPU desktop may not show a meaningful alternative.

Lower the game’s workload selectively

The game’s own graphics menu is usually the most direct way to trade image quality for smoother performance. Change one demanding option at a time, test the same scene, and keep the change only if it solves the problem. AMD’s Game Advisor examples include lowering a quality preset, reducing anti-aliasing or ambient occlusion, lowering render scale, and reducing display resolution: AMD’s Game Advisor instructions.

Start with the settings that change the most work

  1. Quality preset: move from Ultra or Very High to High, then test. A preset changes multiple settings, so use it as a quick broad test rather than a final diagnosis.
  2. Render scale: reduce the internal rendering resolution while keeping the monitor’s output resolution. The image becomes softer, but the GPU has fewer pixels to shade.
  3. Display resolution: lower the game’s output resolution if render scale is unavailable or does not provide enough relief. This is easy to reverse but has an obvious image-quality cost.
  4. Anti-aliasing: test a less expensive method or a lower level. Edges may look more jagged or shimmer more.
  5. Ambient occlusion and advanced lighting: reduce or disable them if the game’s scene complexity causes large drops. Contact shadows and indirect-light effects may look less pronounced.

Menus vary by game, and the same label can have different performance costs in different engines. AMD’s examples are options to test, not universal best settings. There is no supported basis for promising a particular percentage gain from any one adjustment.

Keep changes reversible

Take a screenshot of the original settings or write them down. Change one item, restart only when the game requires it, and compare the same scene. If the result is worse, restore the previous value. A controlled sequence prevents a low-quality image from becoming the “solution” when a smaller change would have been enough.

Radeon-specific controls: use only when your hardware supports them

AMD Adrenalin software can expose per-game profiles and features, but the exact controls depend on the Radeon model, driver version, and game. AMD’s Radeon settings documentation describes profile configuration and game-specific options: AMD’s Radeon settings guide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Game Advisor

AMD’s Game Advisor can suggest changes based on the game and system configuration. The article describing the tool was last updated June 13, 2025 and refers to Adrenalin Edition 25.6.1. Treat its menu names as version-dependent: open the current Adrenalin interface, inspect the recommendation, and apply it manually so you can evaluate the image-quality trade-off.

Radeon Boost

Radeon Boost can adjust resolution in supported games in response to user input. AMD notes that a higher minimum resolution change can improve performance at the cost of image quality. The feature is not available for every GPU or every game, so check the current support list and the controls exposed by your driver: AMD’s Radeon Anti-Lag, Radeon Boost and Radeon Chill guide.

Do not treat Radeon controls as generic Windows settings. A system using another graphics-card brand will not necessarily have the same features, and even two Radeon systems can show different options because of model, driver, or game support.

Compare the practical choices before you change them

Change Possible benefit Image-quality cost Power, heat, and compatibility Reversibility
Close unnecessary apps Can reduce CPU, memory, or disk competition when another process is the bottleneck. None in the game. May reduce background power use; applies to any Windows game. Very easy: reopen the app.
Windows and optional driver updates Can fix software defects or outdated components; no guaranteed frame-rate increase. Usually none, although a driver change can alter behavior. Depends on Windows, hardware, and driver support. Reversible only through the supported rollback path.
Free storage and restart Can reduce system sluggishness and loading contention when storage is nearly full. None if only unwanted temporary files are removed. Applies broadly; benefit depends on available space and background activity. Cleanup is not always reversible, so verify files first.
Best performance power mode May help a CPU sustain higher performance when it is the limit. None directly. More power use, heat, and laptop battery drain; Windows setting required. Easy: select the previous power mode.
Windows 11 windowed-game optimization May improve compatible DirectX 10/11 windowed or borderless games. Normally none, but behavior is title-dependent. Requires Windows 11 and a compatible game and display mode. Easy: toggle it and restart the game.
Render scale or resolution Often reduces GPU pixel workload when the GPU is limiting frame rate. Lower sharpness or detail; resolution changes are obvious. Works only where the game exposes the control; lower workload can reduce power use. Very easy: restore the original value.
Anti-aliasing, ambient occlusion, or advanced effects Can reduce the cost of specific rendering effects. Edges, contact shadows, and lighting may look less refined. Game-specific; exact cost varies by engine and scene. Easy: restore each setting.
Radeon Boost Can adjust resolution dynamically in supported games based on input. Motion may look softer when the resolution changes. Requires supported Radeon hardware, driver, and game; AMD-specific. Easy when exposed in the profile.

The table describes trade-offs rather than ranking the settings by a numerical gain. The supplied Microsoft and AMD guidance does not establish comparable benchmark results for these choices.

Use symptoms to choose the next test

The GPU appears busy and frame rate is consistently low

Lower render scale or resolution first, then test anti-aliasing, ambient occlusion, and other advanced effects. If the image becomes unacceptable before performance is usable, the game may simply exceed what the current GPU can render at that target resolution and quality.

The CPU is busy while the GPU has headroom

Close background applications, disable unnecessary overlays, and test a lower preset that reduces simulation-related options if the game separates them from visual effects. Best performance mode can be a test on a plugged-in laptop, but monitor heat and stop using it if temperatures or fan noise become problematic.

Memory or disk activity spikes during stutters

Close browsers and other memory-heavy applications, check free storage, finish pending updates, and scan for unexplained activity. Repeat the same traversal after a restart. If the game streams assets heavily, a brief hitch may remain even after background contention is removed.

The problem occurs only in borderless or windowed mode on Windows 11

Try Optimizations for windowed games, restart the title, and compare against the previous setting. The feature is intended for compatible DirectX 10 and 11 games; it is not a universal fix for every API or full-screen mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Performance worsens as the laptop heats up

Use the power setting as a controlled experiment, keep vents clear, and compare a short run with a long run. The evidence here supports checking software and power behavior, not selecting a particular cooling product. If sustained heat remains a concern, consult the laptop manufacturer’s maintenance guidance.

Know when software changes will not be enough

Microsoft cautions that older PCs with outdated hardware may not see significant gains from general Windows performance steps: Microsoft’s performance guidance. The same limitation applies to graphics settings: reducing quality can lower the workload, but it cannot create processing capacity that the hardware does not have.

If the game remains below your target after background processes are controlled, Windows is updated, and the most expensive settings are reduced, decide whether the remaining compromise is acceptable. Lowering resolution or render scale may provide smoothness at the cost of clarity; keeping high image quality may mean accepting a lower frame rate. A graphics-card replacement is only one possible future hardware change, and the diagnosis should establish that the GPU—not the CPU, memory, storage, or thermals—is actually the limiting component before you spend money.

A repeatable no-upgrade checklist

  1. Record the game, resolution, preset, window mode, symptom, and a repeatable test scene.
  2. Open Task Manager during the slowdown and identify CPU, memory, disk, and GPU pressure.
  3. Close only background applications you recognize and do not need.
  4. Install Windows updates and applicable optional driver updates, then restart.
  5. Scan for malware if unexplained resource use persists.
  6. Check storage space and remove only unwanted temporary files.
  7. On Windows 11, test Optimizations for windowed games for a compatible DirectX 10/11 title in windowed or borderless mode; restart the game.
  8. Change one in-game setting at a time, beginning with preset, render scale or resolution, anti-aliasing, and ambient occlusion.
  9. If you use a Radeon card, inspect supported per-game profiles or Game Advisor and verify the current driver’s feature availability.
  10. Test Best performance mode only with its power, heat, and battery costs understood.
  11. Restore any change that harms image quality without solving the measured symptom.
