For smoother gaming on a Galaxy S21 or S22, start with Samsung’s built-in Game Booster: choose Performance for demanding games, then tune any per-game FPS, resolution, and frame-booster controls your software exposes. Keep the phone cool, because heat can trigger automatic performance limits. On supported S22 models, Pause USB PD charging when gaming can reduce battery charging heat when you play while plugged in.
Menu names and available controls depend on the Galaxy model, One UI version, game, and region. The settings below use Samsung’s current guidance, including its One UI 7 instructions, but your phone may show a slightly different layout.

Before changing anything
Check the software context first. Samsung’s UK One UI 7 guidance, updated 19 March 2026, says gaming controls can vary by software version, device model, and region. Samsung’s US Gaming Hub documentation also notes that Game Booster is not available for every game. If a menu or toggle is missing, that does not necessarily indicate a fault; the feature may not be supported by that game or build.

- Install the latest system and game updates offered to your phone.
- Open the game through Gaming Hub so Game Booster can attach to the session.
- Make changes while observing the same game and, where possible, the same demanding scene. That makes it easier to tell whether a setting actually helps your phone.
- Do not expect a setting to bypass a game’s own device limits, network latency, or Samsung’s thermal protection.
Choose the right Game Booster performance mode
Samsung provides three broad choices: Performance, Standard, and Battery saver. They are trade-offs, not guaranteed frame-rate presets. Performance gives priority to responsiveness, while the other modes preserve more battery or reduce demand.

Find the performance selector
- Open Gaming Hub.
- Tap More (the three-dot menu).
- Choose Game Booster.
- Open Game optimisation.
- On One UI 7, select Performance. Samsung says the high-performance choice was moved from Game Booster Labs to the top of the Game Booster settings menu.
Older tutorials may still direct you to Game Booster Labs. If your phone uses a different One UI release, look for equivalent wording under Game Booster rather than assuming the video’s path is still current.
What each mode does
| Mode | Best use | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Performance | Demanding 3D games, competitive play, or a session where responsiveness matters most. | Samsung warns that higher-demand gaming can consume battery faster and increase heat. Temperature-based management can still reduce performance if the phone becomes too hot. |
| Standard | Everyday play when you want a practical balance between speed, battery use, and temperature. | It may not prioritize the highest performance available from the device. |
| Battery saver | Long sessions away from a charger when extending play time matters more than peak performance. | Samsung says this mode limits some functions to maximize battery use during gaming, so it is not the choice for maximum frame rate. |
Start with Performance for one demanding title. If the phone becomes uncomfortably warm or battery drain is excessive, move to Standard before lowering every in-game setting. Battery saver is a deliberate endurance choice, not a performance upgrade.
Tune settings for an individual game
Samsung’s One UI 7 guidance says supported devices can expose game-specific controls for optimisation, FPS, screen resolution, and frame booster settings. These controls are not guaranteed on every S21 or S22, every software version, or every game.
Open the per-game controls
- Launch the game from Gaming Hub.
- Open the Game Booster panel during play, or return to Gaming Hub > More > Game Booster and select the game-specific settings shown on your phone.
- Change one control at a time: optimisation level, FPS target, screen resolution, or frame booster.
- Play the same section long enough to judge sustained smoothness, then keep the setting that feels best.
How to make the trade-off
- FPS: Choose the highest option the game and phone both support if responsiveness is your priority. A higher target can raise power use and heat.
- Resolution: Lowering resolution can reduce rendering work when a game is GPU-limited. The picture will be less detailed, but frame pacing may feel steadier.
- Frame booster: Use it only when the option is available and the result looks natural in that game. Samsung documents the control, but the available implementation can differ by title.
- Optimisation level: Treat it as a per-game preference rather than a universal ranking. Some games may show fewer choices than others.
There is no official S21-versus-S22 FPS figure in Samsung’s guidance, and the documented material does not establish a fixed gain from any one toggle. Judge the change on your own game, scene, and software build.
Manage heat for sustained performance
Heat is one of the most important causes of performance changing during a long session. Samsung’s thermal guidance, updated 26 February 2026, lists high-demand games, prolonged use, bright displays, multiple simultaneous tasks, hot surroundings, direct sunlight, and poor ventilation as factors that can warm a Galaxy device. When temperatures become extreme, system protection can limit performance; charging may also be restricted.

- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Set up a cooler playing environment
- Play in the shade and keep the phone away from direct sunlight.
- Use a hard, open surface rather than a blanket, bed, or other material that traps heat around the phone.
- Reduce sustained screen brightness if you can still see the game comfortably.
- Close unneeded apps and stop downloads, video playback, or other simultaneous tasks that compete for resources.
- Do not use a damaged or incompatible cable when charging.
What to do when the phone is hot
- Save the game if possible and pause play.
- Disconnect charging if the phone is charging and the device is hot.
- Move it to a cooler, ventilated place out of direct sun.
- Wait until the device returns to a comfortable temperature before resuming a demanding game.
Do not attempt to defeat Samsung’s thermal controls. They are part of the phone’s protection system, and a setting that appears faster for a short burst is not a safe recipe for sustained play.
Use Pause USB PD charging on a supported Galaxy S22
Some S22 models provide Pause USB PD charging when gaming. Samsung describes this as directing power from a compatible charger to the phone during gameplay instead of continually charging the battery. It is a model-specific charging feature, not a general Game Booster or cooling mode.
Recommended Free Tools
Check whether your S22 exposes the toggle
- Connect a compatible USB-C charger.
- Start a game.
- Open Gaming Hub > More > Game Booster.
- Look for Pause USB PD charging when gaming and enable it if shown.
Samsung’s US Gaming Hub documentation lists the S22 series for this feature, not the S21. Samsung Electronics Service Korea’s guidance specifies the documented operating conditions: a USB Power Delivery charger supporting PPS at 25W or higher, a game actively running, and at least 20% battery charge. Menus and availability can still vary by model and software.
Choosing a charger for this feature
If you want to use the S22 option, look for a charger whose specifications explicitly state both USB PD and PPS, with output of at least 25W. A USB-C plug alone does not prove compatibility. This accessory can make plugged-in play more practical, but it is not a universal performance booster and is not documented here as an S21 feature.
What is different about the Galaxy S21?
Samsung’s current US Gaming Hub guidance lists Pause USB PD charging for the S22 series and does not list the S21. Do not assume an S21 will gain the toggle simply because an S22 tutorial shows it.

Samsung’s Galaxy S21 5G update record for model SM-G991B documents an alternate game performance management mode in an Android 12 release dated 3 March 2022, while retaining temperature-based performance management. That is historical update information, not proof that every S21 regional build still shows the same label. Use the controls that appear in your current Game Booster menu.

That information explains why older advice may mention different labels, but it should not be treated as a promise about a current S21 installation.
Diagnose the problem before lowering settings
Different symptoms point to different causes. Work through the branch that matches what you feel in the game.
The game is slow immediately
- Check Game Booster’s selected mode. If it is Battery saver, try Standard or Performance.
- Look for per-game FPS or resolution controls. A game may be using a conservative profile even when the phone itself is capable of more.
- Check whether the title is supported by Game Booster. Samsung says the feature is not available for every game.
The game starts smoothly and worsens after several minutes
- Suspect heat before assuming the phone lacks power.
- Lower brightness, close concurrent tasks, move out of direct sun, and stop playing until the phone cools.
- Try Standard mode for a steadier long session instead of forcing Performance while the device is hot.
Controls or menu items are missing
- Confirm that Gaming Hub and Game Booster are updated.
- Check the exact model, One UI version, and region; Samsung says these can change the available controls.
- Try launching the game through Gaming Hub and opening the in-game Game Booster panel.
- Do not use an older video’s Game Booster Labs path as evidence that your phone is malfunctioning; One UI 7 moved high performance into the main Game Booster settings.
The game feels delayed even at a stable frame rate
Game Booster cannot remove network latency. A settings change can improve local rendering or responsiveness, but it cannot fix a slow connection, a distant game server, or lag originating outside the phone.
A practical setup for common priorities
For the highest available responsiveness
- Select Game Booster > Game optimisation > Performance.
- Use the highest supported per-game FPS option.
- Keep resolution at the game’s highest level only if the phone remains comfortable and smooth.
- Play in shade with ventilation and minimal background activity.
For long battery life
- Choose Standard first; choose Battery saver when endurance is the overriding concern.
- Reduce display brightness to a comfortable level.
- Use a per-game FPS or resolution setting that avoids unnecessary rendering demand.
- Do not continue playing while the phone is hot.
For plugged-in S22 gaming
- Use a charger rated for USB PD and PPS at 25W or higher.
- Make sure the battery is at least 20% and a game is running.
- Enable Pause USB PD charging when gaming if the toggle is present.
- Keep the phone ventilated; pausing battery charging does not eliminate heat from the display, processor, graphics workload, or room.
Compare settings without misleading yourself
Small changes can feel different from one game to another, so use a simple, repeatable comparison rather than changing everything at once.

- Pick one title and one demanding level, race, match, or combat scene that you can revisit.
- Begin with Standard mode and note visible stutter, touch response, battery drain, and how warm the phone feels.
- Return to the same scene after selecting Performance, keeping brightness and other conditions similar.
- If you change FPS, resolution, or frame booster, change only one of those controls at a time.
- Compare after several minutes, not just during the first burst, because heat-related management can appear later.
- Keep the setting that gives the best balance for your priority. If the phone becomes hot, stop the comparison and let it cool.
This approach cannot produce a universal S21-versus-S22 result. It simply helps separate a useful setting change from a difference caused by a new level, a cooler starting temperature, or network conditions.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Following an old menu path literally: One UI 7 moved high performance out of Game Booster Labs, so older instructions may no longer match.
- Assuming Performance guarantees a higher frame rate: Samsung does not publish a fixed gain, and the game may impose its own cap.
- Running maximum brightness indefinitely: Samsung identifies bright displays as a heat contributor; use only the brightness you need.
- Playing on soft, insulating surfaces: Blankets and beds can prevent heat from dissipating.
- Using any USB-C charger for Pause USB PD: The documented S22 feature needs USB PD with PPS at 25W or higher, not merely a USB-C connector.
- Expecting the S22 charging option on an S21: Samsung’s current US list names the S22 series, not the S21.
- Trying to override thermal protection: Samsung’s temperature management can limit performance to protect the device.
- Blaming Game Booster for online lag: Local rendering settings cannot remove network latency.
Limits of what these settings can prove
Samsung’s published guidance does not provide a comparable FPS increase, temperature reduction, or battery-life percentage for the S21 and S22 settings above. Results depend on the game, graphics workload, software build, ambient temperature, brightness, battery condition, and network. Treat Performance mode and per-game controls as tools for finding a better balance on your own handset, not as guaranteed benchmark upgrades.
The safest evaluation is simple: choose one game, note how it behaves in a repeatable scene, change one setting, and compare the same scene after the phone has reached a similar temperature. If the phone becomes hot, stop and let it cool rather than interpreting thermal throttling as evidence that another hidden toggle is needed.
Quick checklist
- Gaming Hub is updated and the game is launched through it.
- Game Booster mode matches your priority: Performance, Standard, or Battery saver.
- Per-game FPS, resolution, optimisation, and frame-booster controls are adjusted only when your phone and game provide them.
- Brightness and background activity are reduced when heat or battery drain is a problem.
- The phone is shaded, ventilated, and not resting on an insulating surface.
- You pause play and charging if the device becomes hot.
- On an S22, Pause USB PD charging is used only with a compatible 25W-or-higher PPS PD charger, an active game, and at least 20% battery.
- You do not expect Game Booster to remove network latency, override a game’s limits, or safely bypass thermal protection.
Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my phone slow down after a few minutes of gaming?
Heat is a likely cause. High-demand games, prolonged use, bright screens, multitasking, direct sun, and poor ventilation can warm the phone, after which Samsung’s protection may limit performance. Pause and cool the device.
Can I use Pause USB PD charging on a Galaxy S21?
Samsung’s current US Gaming Hub list names the S22 series and does not list the S21. Do not assume the S22 toggle is available on an S21; check the Game Booster menu on your exact model.
What charger does Pause USB PD charging require?
Samsung service guidance specifies a USB Power Delivery charger with PPS support rated at 25W or higher, an active game, and at least 20% battery. A USB-C connector alone is not enough.

Per-game controls depend on the game, model, One UI version, region, and software. Game Booster is not available for every game. Launch the title through Gaming Hub and check the in-game Game Booster panel.
Should I use Battery saver while gaming?
Use it when extending battery life matters more than peak performance. Samsung says it limits some functions, so Standard is usually the better everyday balance and Performance is the choice when responsiveness matters most.
Can Game Booster fix online lag?
No. It can affect local rendering and responsiveness, but it cannot remove network latency, a distant server, or connection problems outside the phone.
The Bottom Line
For most Galaxy S21 and S22 owners, the best starting point is Game Booster’s Performance mode for demanding games, followed by per-game FPS and resolution adjustments when those controls are available. Standard is the sensible balance for everyday play, while Battery saver favors endurance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
