How to Improve FPS and Reduce Stuttering in Enshrouded

The fastest way to improve Enshrouded performance is to identify whether you have a low-FPS problem, inconsistent frame pacing, a first-launch shader pause, or network delay. Check your hardware against the game’s published requirements, install the current build and graphics driver, measure the same scene repeatedly, then change one variable at a time. A lower graphics setting helps only when the GPU is the bottleneck; it will not reliably cure CPU limits, shader preparation, memory pressure, or packet loss.

This guide uses the official requirements and support guidance available through June 2026. Requirements published on January 24, 2024 and older hotfix notes are useful baselines, not guarantees of a particular frame rate. Check the live requirements and latest patch notes before making a purchase or diagnosing a newly released build.

First, identify what “lag” actually means

“Lag” can describe several unrelated symptoms. Watch what happens at the moment of a hitch and classify it before changing settings.

Low average FPS

The image is continuously slow, especially when you turn the camera or enter a busy area. A GPU running near full utilization while lowering resolution raises FPS is evidence of a graphics bottleneck.

Uneven frame pacing

The counter may show 60 FPS or more, yet the game still feels jerky. Brief frame-time spikes can make motion uneven even when the average is high. Community reports describe this pattern, but they are anecdotes rather than proof of a universal cause or fix. Treat frame pacing as a separate measurement from average FPS.

A one-time startup pause

On Steam Deck, Keen Games says the first black screen can last one or two minutes while the client and shaders prepare. That stated first-launch behavior is different from recurring pauses during play. Do not judge normal gameplay from the initial preparation screen.

Multiplayer delay or missing servers

Packet loss, connection drops, rubber-banding, and a server list that will not populate indicate a network path problem. They do not demonstrate that your graphics card is too slow. Use the network branch later in this guide instead of lowering every visual setting.

Check your PC against the published baseline

Keen Games lists the following Windows requirements. They are published baselines, not a promise of stutter-free play or a specified FPS target.

Tier Operating system Processor Memory Graphics example Video memory Storage
Minimum Windows 10 Intel Core i5-6400 or AMD Ryzen 5 1500X class, 4 cores 16 GB RAM GeForce GTX 1060 or Radeon RX 580 6 GB 60 GB listed by the requirements page
Recommended Windows 10 Intel Core i7-8700 or AMD Ryzen 7 2700X class 16 GB RAM GeForce RTX 2070 Super or Radeon RX 6700 XT 6 GB 60 GB listed by the requirements page

The requirements page is dated January 24, 2024. A system that meets the minimum can still need reduced resolution and quality, and a system that meets the recommended examples can still show frame-time spikes caused by a particular build, driver, scene, background process, or CPU limit. Record your exact CPU, GPU model and VRAM, system RAM, monitor resolution, refresh rate, and game version before troubleshooting.

Build a repeatable performance baseline

Changing several options at once makes it impossible to know what helped. Create a short, repeatable test instead.

  1. Choose one location and activity that regularly exposes the problem, such as the same settlement entrance, combat encounter, or camera movement.
  2. Use the same resolution, display mode, refresh rate, graphics preset, and scene for every comparison.
  3. Play or observe for several minutes rather than judging a single turn of the camera.
  4. Record average FPS and whether a visible hitch repeats. If your overlay provides frame-time history, note spikes as well as the average.
  5. Observe CPU and GPU utilization, temperatures, clock speeds, and memory use when available. Do not treat any single utilization percentage as a universal pass/fail threshold; use it to identify which component changes when you alter a setting.
  6. Save the original settings so you can revert a change that does not improve the repeated test.

A useful result is comparative: “The same route produced fewer recurring hitches after this one change.” A single number from an unrelated location is not a benchmark for everyone.

Update the game and inspect version-specific notes

Install the current update before tuning. The official hotfix index researched for this guide lists releases through June 29, 2026. It lists Hotfix #42 as version 0.9.1.2 and Hotfix #37 as version 0.9.1.0. Those entries establish the version context of that index; they do not prove which build is current when you read this or promise a general FPS improvement.

After updating, read the notes for your exact build and look for rendering, shader, stability, crash, or platform-specific changes that match your symptom. If the stutter began immediately after a game update, test the unmodified new build before layering on community tweaks. If it began after a graphics-driver update, compare the driver release date with the game hotfix date and use the vendor’s supported rollback or clean-install procedure only when appropriate.

Hotfix #27, dated June 25, 2025, says the recommended Nvidia driver was updated to the latest to help stability on RTX 50-series cards. That is historical, version-specific guidance, not a timeless command to install a particular driver and not evidence of a measured FPS gain. Follow the driver version recommended for your current game build and GPU, if one is published.

Tune graphics settings without guessing

The official material does not identify a current Enshrouded setting that universally removes stutter, and it does not provide measured FPS gains for individual options. Use the following as a controlled test plan rather than a guaranteed recipe.

When the GPU is saturated

First test a lower render resolution or a modestly lower overall quality level. Keep the scene and camera path identical. If FPS rises and frame-time spikes become less frequent, the GPU is contributing to the problem. Continue lowering only as far as image quality remains acceptable.

If lowering resolution makes little or no difference, restore it. A CPU limit, memory pressure, shader compilation, driver issue, or game-version behavior is more likely than a purely pixel-processing limit.

Change one option at a time

  1. Write down the current value.
  2. Change one setting by one step.
  3. Repeat the same scene for the same duration.
  4. Compare average FPS and visible frame-time consistency.
  5. Keep the change only if the improvement repeats; otherwise restore the original value.

Do not assume that an upscaler, frame-generation mode, or a named “performance” preset exists on every hardware configuration. Availability and behavior can vary by GPU, driver, game build, and display mode, and the reviewed official sources do not verify a universal sequence for these features.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check display and frame pacing separately

Match the in-game output to your monitor’s native resolution while testing, then compare a lower resolution only as a diagnostic. Keep the refresh rate fixed. If the average FPS is adequate but motion remains uneven, concentrate on frame-time observations rather than chasing a higher counter value. A frame cap can sometimes make pacing more consistent, but no universal cap is established by the official sources; test any cap in the same repeatable scene and keep it only if it measurably improves consistency.

Look for CPU, RAM, and background limits

Dense settlements, simulation-heavy areas, and multiplayer sessions can stress the processor even when the GPU is not fully occupied. The published recommended processor is an i7-8700 or Ryzen 7 2700X class part, while the minimum is a four-core i5-6400 or Ryzen 5 1500X class part. These comparisons describe the requirement tiers; they do not tell you that every processor in a tier will behave identically.

  • Close unnecessary recording, browser, overlay, and synchronization processes for the test.
  • Check whether system RAM is close to full while the hitch occurs. The listed baseline is 16 GB.
  • Watch CPU utilization by core when possible. A single busy core can limit a game even when total CPU usage looks moderate.
  • Check temperatures and clock speeds. Thermal throttling can reduce performance without any graphics-setting change.
  • Leave enough free storage for the game, updates, and shader data; the requirements page lists 60 GB of storage.

These checks are diagnostic, not proof that a specific background application or memory percentage is the cause. Change one condition, rerun the same scene, and keep a written comparison.

Steam Deck: use the official starting point

Keen Games says Enshrouded works on Steam Deck with the recommended default settings and advises starting with those defaults while further optimization work is completed. Begin there rather than importing an unverified configuration from another device.

The first launch may show a black screen for one to two minutes while the Deck client and shaders prepare. Let that process finish before deciding that the game is stuck. If long black screens recur on every launch, or if hitches continue during normal play after preparation has completed, record the build, Deck model, storage location, and repeatable scene and compare them with current support notes.

Deck performance is constrained by its fixed hardware and power envelope. Test one change at a time, keep the same display resolution and refresh settings, and revert any change that does not improve repeated frame pacing. Do not treat buying a Deck as a remedy for an existing PC stutter; the official compatibility statement only establishes that the game runs on Deck with the stated defaults.

Separate network problems from rendering problems

Use the network troubleshooting path when you see dropped connections, packet loss, rubber-banding, or an empty server list. A stable FPS counter cannot prevent packets from being delayed or lost, and lowering texture or shadow quality will not repair a wireless connection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For Wi-Fi packet loss

The official multiplayer guidance recommends trying wired Ethernet when Wi-Fi packet loss is occurring. Compare the same session over the wired connection before changing graphics settings. If the problem disappears, investigate the wireless path, router placement, interference, or network load.

For connection and server-list issues

Follow the game’s stated network steps, which include flushing DNS and clearing Steam’s download cache for the described connection or server-list problem. These actions target name resolution or client cache state; they are not FPS optimizations. Restart the game and retest after each network change so you know which action affected the symptom.

Dedicated-server hosts: reduce slot pressure when necessary

Keen Games documents that each available player slot increases performance impact on a dedicated server. If the server CPU or RAM is constrained, lower the maximum number of player slots and retest with the same workload. This is a server-side capacity adjustment, not a graphics setting for players on their local machines.

If reducing slots improves responsiveness, the evidence points to server resource pressure. Keep the lower capacity until the host has more CPU or memory headroom, then increase slots gradually and retest. If it does not change the hitching, return to the local rendering and frame-time checks rather than continually lowering visual quality.

Decide whether a hardware upgrade is justified

Consider a GPU upgrade only when your graphics card is below the published recommended class and your repeatable test shows GPU saturation that responds to lower resolution or quality. The recommended examples are a GeForce RTX 2070 Super 6 GB or Radeon RX 6700 XT 6 GB; the minimum examples are a GeForce GTX 1060 6 GB or Radeon RX 580 6 GB.

Requirements alone do not prove that a new graphics card will eliminate every stutter. If resolution changes do not affect the hitch, investigate CPU scheduling, memory, thermals, shader preparation, drivers, game version, or server/network conditions first. Upgrade after identifying the measured bottleneck, and confirm that your power supply, case clearance, cooling, and processor will support the replacement.

A practical decision checklist

  • Only the first launch pauses: on Steam Deck, allow the stated one-to-two-minute client and shader preparation period; distinguish it from recurring gameplay hitches.
  • Low FPS improves immediately at lower resolution: continue controlled GPU testing and compare your card with the published tiers.
  • High FPS still feels jerky: record frame-time spikes, repeat the same route, and investigate CPU, memory, shader, driver, or build-specific behavior.
  • FPS is normal but players rubber-band or servers are missing: use the network steps, including wired Ethernet for Wi-Fi packet loss, DNS flushing, and the stated Steam cache-clearing step.
  • A dedicated server slows as more people join: reduce maximum slots when CPU or RAM is the host bottleneck.
  • A graphics tweak changes nothing: restore it and test a different suspected bottleneck instead of stacking undocumented tweaks.

What the evidence does—and does not—establish

The official pages provide requirements, platform guidance, network remedies, server-slot advice, and version notes. They do not publish a universal Enshrouded graphics preset that reliably removes stutter, a measured FPS gain for a particular option, or a single ideal frame cap. Community discussions can explain why readers use terms such as “stuttering at 60 FPS,” but anecdotal reports cannot establish a guaranteed fix.

For that reason, the reliable method is diagnostic: identify the symptom, establish a repeatable baseline, update the game and review current notes, change one variable, and keep only improvements that repeat in the same conditions. Recheck the live requirements, current build, driver compatibility, graphics options, and latest patch notes because the dated requirements and historical hotfix entries can become outdated.
