Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteStart by separating two problems: low average FPS means the game is rendering slowly most of the time, while stuttering means frame delivery is uneven and a hitch appears even when the average looks acceptable. Watch the PC while reproducing the same in-game moment, apply reversible Windows and game changes one at a time, and only consider hardware after the measurements identify a limit. There is no universal looter-shooter setting that guarantees a higher frame rate or eliminates every hitch.
Low FPS and stutter are different symptoms
Frames per second is an average over time. It can hide a brief pause: a game may report a seemingly reasonable average while one frame takes much longer than the others to appear. That uneven delivery is what you feel as a hitch, judder or freeze. Conversely, a game can deliver frames consistently but slowly, producing a continuously low and sluggish image rather than isolated pauses.

Treat the symptoms separately when you test a change. Record the average FPS, but also note whether the same camera turn, encounter or loading transition produces a visible hitch. A useful comparison asks whether the frame rate is higher, whether delivery is more consistent, whether controls feel delayed, whether tearing has changed, and whether the laptop is drawing more power or heat.

A display refresh rate is a separate limit from the game’s render rate. For example, a 60 Hz monitor updates 60 times per second. Windows explains that the refresh rates offered in Settings depend on the display and its connection; use its refresh-rate instructions rather than assuming that a particular value is available.

Collect a baseline before changing anything
Write down the conditions under which the problem occurs. “A looter shooter stutters” is not enough information to choose a setting or a component. Capture these details:
- The exact game and its current version.
- CPU model, GPU model, installed memory capacity and whether the system has one GPU or more than one.
- Whether the game is installed on an SSD or hard drive, and how much free space remains on that drive.
- Resolution, selected display mode (exclusive fullscreen, windowed or borderless), graphics preset and individual quality settings you have changed.
- Monitor model, refresh rate currently selected in Windows, and whether variable refresh rate (VRR) is available and enabled.
- Whether the hitch is repeatable in one location, during a particular effect or encounter, after a map transition, or at apparently random times.
- Average FPS and an observation of frame-time consistency in the same scene. If the game or overlay supplies a frame-time graph, save a screenshot; if not, describe the hitch timing consistently.
This baseline prevents a common mistake: changing several options, seeing a different result in a different scene and attributing the difference to the last option touched. Use a repeatable route, encounter or camera movement for every comparison.
Diagnose the PC while the hitch is happening
1. Reproduce the same moment
Load the game, take the same route and repeat the action that exposes the problem. If the hitch cannot be reproduced, leave settings unchanged and observe the next occurrence instead of guessing. Note whether the game is actively loading, whether a menu or overlay appeared, and whether the pause affects controls as well as the image.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →2. Inspect resource use in Task Manager
Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc while the game is running, or immediately after a repeatable hitch. Check CPU, Memory and Disk activity, and look for a process that spikes at the same time. Microsoft’s Windows performance guidance recommends monitoring resource use, closing unused applications and recognizing that hardware limits can remain after software cleanup.
Close only applications you recognize and do not need. Save work first. A browser tab, recording tool, file synchronizer or installer may be consuming resources, but ending an unfamiliar Windows process can cause instability. If no process shows an obvious spike, that is still useful evidence: do not label the GPU, CPU or drive as the cause solely because the game stutters.
3. Check for a constrained drive
Look at the game drive’s free space in File Explorer. Limited storage is one of the possible contributors to poor Windows performance identified by Microsoft, so reclaim space when the drive is nearly full and test again. This is a troubleshooting step, not a promised FPS increase. Do not treat defragmenting an SSD as a demonstrated fix for this problem.

4. Separate a game problem from a system-wide problem
Run the same observation in another demanding game or a different area of the same game only if you can do so without changing the comparison conditions. If several applications hitch under similar load, system-level checks deserve priority. If one title alone hitches while other workloads remain smooth, examine that title’s display mode, graphics settings and supported features before purchasing hardware. Neither pattern proves a single cause; it narrows what to test next.
Apply the reversible Windows fixes first
Install available Windows and driver updates
Use Windows Update and the update mechanism supplied for your graphics hardware to install available updates, then restart the PC. Microsoft lists outdated software among possible reasons for slow performance. An update can correct compatibility issues, but it is not evidence of a guaranteed FPS uplift, so repeat the baseline test afterward.
Reduce background load
Before launching the game, close applications you are not using. In Task Manager, sort processes by CPU, Memory or Disk and investigate the largest users. Keep security software and other services you need; do not indiscriminately terminate processes. If a background application is consistently active during a hitch, disable its own startup or scheduling option and retest rather than repeatedly killing it during play.
Check storage and power conditions
Maintain practical free space on the game and system drives and make sure a laptop is plugged in when you compare results. Record whether a change affects fan noise, temperature or battery draw. Heat and power behavior can change performance, but a temperature reading by itself does not establish why a particular hitch occurred; use it alongside the repeatable scene and Task Manager observations.
Do not expect software to overcome old hardware
Microsoft cautions that older hardware may not benefit significantly from software changes. If the game remains consistently below the desired frame rate after updates, background cleanup and sensible settings changes, treat that as evidence to investigate a hardware limit rather than cycling through increasingly aggressive tweaks.
Use Windows 11 graphics options correctly
Optimizations for windowed games
Windows 11 includes Optimizations for windowed games. Microsoft says it improves gaming performance for DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running in windowed and borderless-windowed modes by moving compatible games to a newer presentation model; the change can reduce frame latency. Its scope matters: it does not describe every API, every game or exclusive fullscreen mode.

To check it, open Settings > System > Display > Graphics and find the option for windowed-game optimizations. Change the setting, then fully close and relaunch the game before judging it. Compare borderless or windowed play under the same scene; do not assume that enabling the option improves an unsupported title.
Choose the high-performance GPU for a specific game
On a system with integrated and discrete GPUs, Windows can assign a per-app graphics preference. In Settings > System > Display > Graphics, select or add the game, open Options, choose High performance when that choice represents the discrete GPU, and save. Restart the game. This setting is relevant only when the PC has multiple graphics processors and the selected preference is actually compatible with the hardware.
Do not force a high-performance preference on every application as a blanket cure. It can increase power use on a laptop, and it cannot make a GPU render beyond its physical capability.
Verify the monitor refresh rate and VRR path
Open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display and verify that Windows is using the refresh rate your monitor and connection support. Microsoft notes that the available rates depend on the display. A wrong selection can make a game feel less responsive or prevent a display feature from operating as intended, but changing it is not a guaranteed fix for a CPU- or GPU-limited game.
Variable refresh rate can alter how the display follows the game’s output. Microsoft notes that VRR can make manual refresh-rate changes unnecessary for some games. Check whether your monitor, GPU, cable and Windows version support the feature, and compare it with the same in-game scene. Record tearing, visible hitching and control feel rather than judging only the FPS number.
Change in-game graphics one option at a time
Start with the game’s own preset only as a way to establish a lower-load comparison, then adjust individual options. Lower a demanding setting, apply it, repeat the same scene and record the result. If the change improves average FPS but the hitch remains, you have addressed sustained rendering load rather than the source of uneven delivery. If image quality drops without a measurable or visible benefit, restore the original value.

| Setting area | What to compare | What the result tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Overall quality or individual quality sliders | Average FPS, visible detail and whether the repeatable hitch remains | A higher frame rate with unchanged hitching suggests that the two symptoms need separate investigation. |
| Resolution or render scale, when the game exposes it | Image sharpness against sustained FPS in the same view | A large performance response indicates that rendering workload matters; it does not identify every cause of a hitch. |
| Display mode | Exclusive fullscreen versus borderless or windowed, with the same refresh and scene | Compatibility with Windows’ windowed-game optimization and the game’s presentation path may differ. |
| VSync | Tearing, input delay, average FPS and hitching | Sync behavior has trade-offs; no universal enable-or-disable rule follows from the symptom alone. |
| VRR | Perceived smoothness, tearing and control response | The result depends on the monitor, GPU, game support and Windows configuration. |
| Latency or frame-queue controls | Input response, frame-time consistency and idle GPU periods | A shorter queue can reduce waiting but can also expose micro-stutter, as NVIDIA’s technical material explains. |
Use the game’s apply and restart requirements exactly. Some titles do not commit a display-mode change until they restart, and a setting that appears to change in a menu may not affect the active render path until then.

VSync is not a universal stutter switch
VSync coordinates frame presentation with the display and can change tearing and latency. Its effect depends on the game, display mode, refresh rate and hardware headroom. Compare it in the same scene and keep the option that best balances tearing, smoothness and control response for your system. Do not tell every player to disable it simply because the game stutters.
VRR changes the display’s timing behavior
When supported by the monitor and graphics path, VRR can let the display follow changing frame delivery. It does not create additional rendering performance and cannot repair a process that pauses for another reason. Check the monitor’s supported range and Windows’ selected refresh rate, then test VRR with the game’s own sync options rather than changing several timing controls simultaneously.
A shorter frame queue can increase micro-stutter
NVIDIA’s system-latency guidance and its Stuttering Analysis presentation describe a conditional trade-off: “Limiting buffered frames to 1 can shorten input latency,” but the same presentation says that it raises the chance of micro-stuttering and idle bubbles in GPU processing. Treat a queue or latency limit as an experiment, not a prescription. Change one control, repeat the scene, and revert it if frame delivery becomes less consistent or the input benefit is not meaningful.

| Axis | How to record it |
|---|---|
| Average FPS | Use the same route and duration; do not compare a quiet menu with a busy fight. |
| Frame-time consistency | Record visible hitches or a frame-time graph, especially during the known problem moment. |
| Image quality | Note lost detail, blur or distracting changes at the normal viewing distance. |
| Input latency | Use the same controls and judge whether aiming, firing and camera movement feel delayed. |
| Tearing and presentation | Check moving edges and camera pans with the same sync and VRR conditions. |
| Power and heat | On a laptop, record fan behavior, battery draw and whether performance changes after sustained play. |
| Compatibility | Confirm that the game, graphics hardware, monitor and Windows version support the option being tested. |
Keep a change only when it improves the symptom you intended to address without an unacceptable trade-off. Restore the prior value before testing the next option if you need a clean comparison.

Follow the symptom to the next test
The average is low but delivery is steady
Prioritize sustained rendering load: lower demanding in-game quality options one at a time, verify the intended GPU is selected on a multi-GPU system, and confirm the display is using its supported refresh rate. If the result remains below your target after reversible changes, collect the component and resolution details before considering an upgrade. Do not choose a GPU or CPU model from the game genre alone.
The average looks acceptable but the same hitch repeats
Focus on what coincides with the hitch. Inspect Task Manager during the event, check for a background process or storage activity, and note whether the hitch occurs during a transition or a particular effect. Compare display mode, windowed-game optimization where applicable, VSync and VRR separately. A frame-queue change may alter latency but can also make micro-stutter more likely, so measure the visible result.
The problem appears only in borderless or windowed mode
On Windows 11, check whether the title is a compatible DirectX 10 or 11 game covered by Optimizations for windowed games. Test with the option enabled and disabled, restart after each change, and compare against exclusive fullscreen if the game supports it. Do not generalize a result from one title to another API or presentation mode.
Recommended Free Tools
The problem appears after long sessions or on battery
Record whether heat, fan speed or power mode changes precede the hitch. Repeat the comparison while plugged in and under the same Windows power setting, but do not call a temperature reading the root cause without a matching performance change. If the behavior is specific to battery operation, preserve that distinction when seeking system-specific help.
When a hardware upgrade is justified
An upgrade is justified only after a repeatable bottleneck is demonstrated and the replacement is compatible with the rest of the PC. No particular GPU, CPU, memory kit, drive or monitor is established as the correct purchase for an unspecified looter shooter.
- Identify which resource is constrained during the repeatable scene rather than inferring it from the game’s genre.
- Check the proposed component’s socket, power supply, cooling, physical clearance, motherboard support, memory type and available expansion interfaces.
- Confirm that the target resolution and refresh rate make the proposed change relevant.
- Compare the cost and power or heat consequences with the benefit you actually need: higher sustained FPS, fewer hitches, lower latency or a combination.
- Retest after software and settings changes so an upgrade is not masking a background process or configuration error.
If the evidence does not isolate a bottleneck, gather more observations instead of buying the most expensive component. A faster GPU cannot correct a hitch caused by an unrelated process, and more memory or a faster drive cannot be assumed to cure every irregular frame.
A repeatable troubleshooting checklist
- Write down the game version, PC components, drive type and free space, resolution, display mode, refresh rate, VRR state and graphics settings.
- Choose one repeatable scene and record average FPS plus visible hitching or frame-time behavior.
- Reproduce the hitch while watching CPU, Memory and Disk activity in Task Manager.
- Close only recognized, unnecessary applications and retest.
- Install available Windows and graphics-driver updates, restart, and retest.
- Free space on a nearly full drive and retest; do not defragment an SSD as an assumed FPS remedy.
- On Windows 11, check windowed-game optimizations for a compatible DirectX 10 or 11 title and verify the per-app high-performance GPU preference on a multi-GPU PC. Restart the game after either change.
- Verify the monitor’s supported refresh rate in Settings > System > Display > Advanced display and test VRR only when the display and game support it.
- Lower one demanding in-game setting at a time, recording FPS, frame delivery, image quality and input response.
- Test VSync, VRR and any frame-queue or latency control separately, retaining the trade-off that suits your system rather than a universal internet preset.
- If the limitation remains, document the measured bottleneck and perform a compatibility check before considering hardware.
What a useful support report contains
If you still need help, provide the exact game and version, CPU, GPU, memory capacity, storage type, resolution, display mode, refresh rate, VRR state and the settings that changed. Include what Task Manager showed during the hitch, whether the hitch is repeatable, what updates were installed, and the before-and-after results from the same scene. This evidence lets someone distinguish low sustained FPS from irregular frame delivery instead of prescribing a component or setting without knowing your PC.

Improve a looter shooter’s performance methodically: observe the system during a repeatable hitch, update Windows and drivers, remove unnecessary background load, verify storage and display settings, then adjust game graphics and synchronization controls one at a time. Windows 11’s windowed-game and per-app GPU options can help in their supported scenarios, while VSync, VRR and frame-queue controls require explicit trade-off testing. Only a measured, compatible bottleneck supports a hardware purchase; the game category by itself does not.
