How to improve Fire TV recommendations after turning off Viewing Data

You can make Fire TV easier to use after disabling viewing-data sharing, but you cannot recreate the same cross-app personalization while keeping that particular sharing route turned off. The practical approach is to first identify which privacy control you changed, then keep each household member on the correct profile, use Find for deliberate discovery, and remove stale titles from Continue Watching or Recents. If you want some personalization without sharing activity from every app, Fire TV also provides app-specific sharing controls on supported devices.

“Viewing Data” is not one universal switch. Amazon separates Share App Viewing and Content Info from Device Usage Data, and also lists other controls such as Collect App Usage Data and Interest-based Ads. Those settings have different effects and should not be treated as interchangeable.

First, identify which Fire TV setting you turned off

The correct fix depends on the exact menu you changed. On Fire TV devices that show a Continue Watching row, open Settings > Preferences > Privacy Settings > Manage Sharing From Apps. That page controls whether supported third-party apps share viewing and content information with Fire TV. It also includes a separate option for syncing viewing activity across Fire TV devices.

If you instead changed Device Usage Data, you changed a different privacy category. Amazon describes that setting as operating-system usage data used for purposes such as product improvement and customized marketing offers. Turning it off does not disable every form of data processing, remove all personalization, or stop data related to Amazon services such as Prime Video.

Control What it covers What switching it off means
Share App Viewing and Content Info Viewing and content information shared by participating third-party apps Fire TV cannot use that shared activity through the documented Content Personalization API while the sharing route remains disabled
Device Usage Data Operating-system device usage data used for product improvement and customized marketing purposes Stops processing in that category; Amazon says it does not affect certain device features, interest-based advertising data outside that category, or data related to Amazon services such as Prime Video
Collect App Usage Data A separate privacy control listed by Amazon Do not assume it has the same effect as app viewing-and-content sharing; check the wording on your device
Interest-based Ads Advertising personalization Changing it is not the same as changing Continue Watching or recommendation data

Menu names and available controls vary by Fire TV model, software version, country and feature support. The app-sharing page is documented for devices that have a Continue Watching row, so an older or different device may not show it.

What turning off app viewing sharing changes

Amazon’s Content Personalization documentation states the opt-out result plainly: “No | Customer experience is not personalized through the Content Personalization API.” The documentation was updated July 14, 2026. That statement applies to the API integration described there; it should not be expanded into a claim that every recommendation on every Amazon service disappears.

Shared activity can help Fire TV connect activity from supported apps with cross-app discovery and resume features. When you disable that sharing route, Fire TV has less information from those apps to use for that documented personalization path. You can still open apps, search for titles, browse categories and use any recommendations generated inside an individual service under that service’s own policies.

Amazon distinguishes several data sources: app-sharing information, operating-system usage data, Amazon-service data and information handled by third-party apps. Turning off one control does not automatically turn off the others. A streaming app may continue to maintain its own watch history, and Fire TV cannot promise to erase or alter that history merely because app sharing is disabled.

Step 1: check the sharing page and choose the narrowest setting you want

  1. From the Fire TV home screen, open Settings.
  2. Choose Preferences, then Privacy Settings.
  3. Open Manage Sharing From Apps. If this entry is missing, your device may not support the Continue Watching feature or the menu may differ by software version or region.
  4. Review the participating-app controls. Amazon documents options to manage apps individually, switch sharing for all supported apps on or off, and control whether viewing activity syncs across Fire TV devices.
  5. Decide whether you want a full opt-out or a limited compromise. Leaving every app disabled preserves your chosen sharing boundary. Enabling only selected apps shares activity from those apps, but not necessarily from every supported app.
  6. Check the separate activity-sync option. Do not infer that changing app sharing and changing cross-device synchronization are the same action; Fire TV presents them as separate controls.

If your goal is to keep all app sharing off, stop here and use the non-sharing discovery methods below. There is no documented setting that restores personalization through the same Content Personalization API while keeping its required app-sharing data disabled.

Step 2: use the correct Fire TV profile

Fire TV profiles separate viewing history, recommendations, watchlists and watch progress. Amazon says the Continue Watching row reflects the profile currently in use, so a wrong profile can make recommendations look unrelated even when privacy settings are unchanged.

Keep household activity from mixing

  • Select the person’s profile before opening a streaming app or starting playback.
  • Do not use a shared household profile for children’s viewing, guest viewing and adult viewing if you want cleaner recommendations.
  • Verify the active profile whenever the home screen appears to have changed unexpectedly.
  • Use each profile’s own watchlist and progress indicators rather than adding every title to one shared list.

Profiles improve organization and can make the remaining signals more relevant, but they do not recreate app-shared history that you deliberately stopped sending to Fire TV. They also do not cause unsupported apps to appear in Continue Watching.

Check whether your device supports profiles

Amazon lists Fire TV (1st Generation), Fire TV (2nd Generation) and Fire TV Stick (1st Generation) as devices without profile support. On those models, you cannot solve mixed recommendations by creating separate Fire TV profiles; use in-app profiles where available and rely on direct search and manual cleanup.

Step 3: discover titles directly instead of relying on a personalized row

Fire TV’s Find area is the most reliable privacy-preserving discovery method. From the home screen, open Find, search for a title, actor, genre or app, or browse the categories presented on your device. Fire TV may also show Free and Live sections, but Amazon notes that home-screen experiences differ across devices.

Search for a specific title or app

  1. Open Find from the navigation bar.
  2. Type the title or app name with the on-screen keyboard, use voice input if your remote supports it, or browse the available categories.
  3. Open the result and select the app or viewing option shown for your account and region.

This method helps you find something you already have in mind. It does not train a recommendation system or send previously disabled app activity to Fire TV.

Browse categories when you do not have a title in mind

Use the categories and any Free or Live sections displayed by your device. Availability, labels and the number of rows can change by model, software version, region and account. Treat these rows as catalogs and filters, not proof that Fire TV has learned your complete viewing history.

Step 4: clean Continue Watching without changing privacy settings

Stale or abandoned titles can make the home screen feel inaccurate. When the row supports removal, highlight the unwanted title with the remote, press the Menu button, and choose Remove from Continue Watching.

  • Removal affects the individual row item; it is not a universal “not interested” command for every recommendation surface.
  • Netflix titles must be removed in the Netflix app rather than through Fire TV’s general Continue Watching control.
  • Amazon says hidden third-party content can return after it is watched again. Seeing it again does not necessarily mean that the removal command failed.
  • Removing a title does not prove that all viewing history was erased from the app that supplied it.

Use the active profile before cleaning the row. Otherwise, you may remove an item from one profile while the title remains visible on another profile.

Step 5: distinguish Continue Watching from Recents

Fire TV also has a home-screen Recents area. Amazon’s general home-screen guidance says an item can be removed by highlighting it, pressing Menu and selecting Remove from Recent. That action is separate from removing a title from Continue Watching.

Featured categories cannot be removed using the Recents command. A title disappearing from Recents therefore does not mean it has been removed from Continue Watching, an app’s own history or every recommendation row. Clean each surface using the control provided for that surface.

Decide how much personalization you are willing to trade for sharing

There is no single best setting; the choice is between data minimization and convenience. Fire TV’s app-sharing page allows a more precise decision than an all-or-nothing assumption.

Choice Activity shared from supported apps Expected Fire TV convenience Best fit
All sharing off None through the app-sharing route you disabled Use profiles, Find, browsing and manual row cleanup; no documented Content Personalization API personalization from that shared activity Readers who prioritize keeping supported-app viewing activity out of that route
Selected apps on Only the participating apps you enable Potentially better discovery and resume behavior for those apps, with less sharing than an all-app opt-in Readers who want convenience from particular services while limiting scope
All supported apps on Viewing and content information from participating apps, subject to the controls and policies shown on the device Most compatible with cross-app Continue Watching and the documented personalization integration Readers who accept broader sharing for maximum convenience

Amazon’s documentation does not provide a percentage showing how much recommendations improve or decline under any of these choices. Avoid treating a setting change as a measured performance guarantee.

Keep cross-device Continue Watching expectations realistic

Amazon says Continue Watching reflects the active profile, can sync across compatible devices and depends on supported third-party app sharing. If you turn off sharing or disable activity synchronization, a title watched on one Fire TV may not appear as a resume item on another device in the way you expect.

Compatibility is not universal. The row, supported apps, synchronization behavior and available privacy controls vary by device. A missing title can result from the app not participating, the wrong profile being active, a device not being compatible, or sharing being disabled; it is not automatically evidence of a faulty Fire TV.

Troubleshoot recommendations that still look wrong

The home screen shows another person’s viewing

  1. Check the profile icon and switch to the intended profile.
  2. Ask other household members to use their own profiles before playback.
  3. Remove stale items from Continue Watching or Recents on the profile where they appear.
  4. Check whether the title is being supplied by an app’s own account history rather than Fire TV.

Continue Watching is missing entirely

  • Confirm that the device and software expose a Continue Watching row; Amazon says feature availability varies by device.
  • Check whether the app participates in the feature.
  • Verify that you are not using one of the older Fire TV models that lacks profile support.
  • Review Settings > Preferences > Privacy Settings > Manage Sharing From Apps if the menu is available.

A removed title comes back

Confirm that you removed it from the correct row and profile. If it is third-party content, Amazon says it can return after being watched again. Netflix content requires removal inside Netflix.

Turning off Device Usage Data did not change recommendations

That result is consistent with Amazon’s description. Device Usage Data concerns operating-system usage data used for product improvement and customized marketing purposes; it is not the same control as sharing viewing and content information from supported apps. Amazon also says the Device Usage Data choice does not affect data related to Amazon services such as Prime Video.

Search results differ from another household member’s results

Check the active profile, account region, app availability and device model. Fire TV’s categories, Free and Live sections and other home-screen elements can vary. Search is a direct lookup tool, so differences do not necessarily indicate that one profile has better recommendation data.

What you can and cannot accomplish without reversing the choice

You can

  • Keep app viewing sharing disabled and still search, browse and open apps.
  • Use separate profiles where your model supports them.
  • Remove individual items from Continue Watching and Recents.
  • Choose selected participating apps instead of enabling sharing everywhere.
  • Keep using app-specific watchlists and histories inside those services.

You cannot documentably do

  • Restore personalization through the Content Personalization API while withholding the shared activity that API uses.
  • Use one removal command to erase every recommendation, Recents item and app history.
  • Assume that disabling Device Usage Data disables Amazon-service data or third-party app collection.
  • Guarantee identical Continue Watching synchronization across every Fire TV model and app.

Bottom line for a privacy-conscious setup

Start by checking whether you disabled Share App Viewing and Content Info or Device Usage Data. If app sharing is off, the documented personalization route cannot use that shared activity, so improve the experience with the correct profile, direct Find searches, category browsing and careful cleanup of Continue Watching and Recents. If you want a middle ground, enable sharing only for selected participating apps and leave the others disabled. Treat Device Usage Data as a separate operating-system privacy choice, not as a master switch for every Fire TV recommendation or Amazon service.
