Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor ambiguous names, products and technical terms, give Faster-Whisper a short initial_prompt made from the most recent conversation that is likely to precede the audio. This supplies spelling and topic context without forcing a large, stale dictionary into the decoder. Keep the prompt relevant and short: it consumes the model’s text context, and the available evidence does not show a universal word-error-rate advantage over dictionary prompts.
Use initial_prompt only for first-window context. For continuity between later windows, configure condition_on_previous_text separately and test its repetition and timestamp trade-offs on your own recordings.

What initial_prompt does in Faster-Whisper
Faster-Whisper documents initial_prompt as optional text or an iterable of token IDs supplied to the first decoding window. The implementation tokenizes a text prompt, then checks the prompt length together with max_new_tokens against the model’s maximum text length. In other words, a prompt is not free metadata: it occupies context that could otherwise be used for generated transcription.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The prompt is contextual text, not an instruction channel. It does not guarantee that every listed term will appear, and it should not be written as commands such as “always transcribe the next sentence as…”. Its useful role is to make a plausible spelling or topic available when the audio alone is acoustically ambiguous. See the Faster-Whisper transcribe implementation for the parameter and length handling.

What happens in a long recording
initial_prompt applies to the first window. It is different from feeding each later window the preceding transcription. That later-window behavior is controlled by condition_on_previous_text, which the same implementation exposes as a separate option. Treating the two settings as interchangeable is a common source of confusing tests: one establishes initial context, while the other carries decoder output across windows.
Why recent conversation can beat a large static term list
A recent conversational snippet can contain exactly the proper noun, acronym or product name that is about to be spoken, along with the topic that makes the spelling plausible. For example, if the previous turn says “Let’s review the Kubernetes ingress policy,” a compact prompt containing “Kubernetes ingress policy” may help distinguish Kubernetes from phonetically similar words.
This is a bounded practitioner heuristic, not a demonstrated law of speech recognition. A September 5, 2026 article by Orca Forge on Zenn recommends recent conversational context based on operational experience with real-time systems. The cited software documentation and papers do not report a controlled head-to-head word-error-rate comparison proving that recent context always outperforms a dictionary. A static list can still be useful when it is short, current and genuinely relevant.
| Consideration | Recent-context prompt | Static term list |
|---|---|---|
| Relevance | Usually reflects the current topic and speakers | May include terms unrelated to this recording |
| Spelling coverage | Captures names and terms that just appeared | Can cover a known vocabulary before anyone says it |
| Context cost | Can be kept compact by retaining only recent turns | Can grow until it consumes substantial text context |
| Bias risk | Stale dialogue can bias output toward words no longer spoken | Unspoken entries can pull decoding toward the list |
| Evidence status | Supported as a practical heuristic from field experience | No universal benefit or harm established by the cited sources |
Use that table as a design framework, not as a published accuracy result. Measure both strategies on the same audio and references before choosing one for production.

Build a useful prompt step by step
- Capture the immediately preceding turns. In a conversational application, retain the latest user and assistant text that plausibly describes the next utterance. Prefer the last few turns over an entire transcript.
- Keep only terms likely to be spoken. Preserve names, organizations, locations, acronyms, commands and domain terminology that are active in the current exchange. Remove greetings, old topics and boilerplate.
- Use natural context, not a command. A sentence such as “The deployment uses Kubernetes and Argo CD” gives the decoder spelling and topic cues. Do not write “output only the following words” or imply that the model must copy the prompt.
- Match the language and script of the audio. Keep names in their established spelling, but do not mix unrelated language samples merely to make the prompt longer. If the conversation switches languages, retain only the recent language context relevant to the next window.
- Trim before tokenization. The implementation’s combined prompt and generation-length check means that adding text can reduce available output. There is no source-supported universal character limit; choose a conservative application limit, count tokens when possible, and leave headroom for the expected transcription.
- Refresh the prompt as the topic changes. A rolling context should expire stale terms. Reusing a meeting’s opening vocabulary for a later, unrelated discussion can bias recognition toward words that are no longer spoken.
- Log the exact prompt with each evaluation. To reproduce a result, record the prompt text, language, model identifier, decoding settings and audio segment. Without those details, a claimed improvement cannot be diagnosed.
Minimal Python pattern
The following pattern passes a compact text prompt to Faster-Whisper. The model and device settings are illustrative; choose values appropriate for your deployment.
from faster_whisper import WhisperModel
model = WhisperModel("medium", device="cuda", compute_type="float16")
recent_context = (
"The team is discussing Kubernetes ingress, Argo CD, "
"and the customer name Niamh O'Connor."
)
segments, info = model.transcribe(
"conversation.wav",
language="en",
initial_prompt=recent_context,
)
text = " ".join(segment.text for segment in segments)
print(text)
Keep the prompt construction outside the audio loop unless you intentionally want to start a new transcription with new first-window context. If your application creates separate audio chunks, document whether each chunk is a new transcription or a continuation; that choice changes how the parameter behaves.
Do not confuse the four related controls
The Faster-Whisper README distinguishes initial prompts, prefixes and hotwords, while the implementation exposes previous-text conditioning separately. The controls can appear similar in experiments but solve different problems.

| Control | Purpose | When to use it | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
initial_prompt |
Contextual text or token IDs for the first window | Supply recent topic and spelling cues before decoding starts | Consumes text context and does not force every term into output |
condition_on_previous_text |
Feeds previous output into the next window | Maintain continuity across windows in long audio | Can increase repetition loops or timestamp drift in some conditions; disabling it may reduce consistency |
prefix |
Known opening words | When the beginning of the segment is already known | Not a substitute for a broad topical context prompt |
hotwords |
Terms to boost during decoding | When a small set of words needs explicit decoding emphasis | Different mechanism from supplying conversational context |
These distinctions and descriptions are summarized in the Faster-Whisper README. Test one control at a time so an apparent gain is attributable to the setting you changed.

Handle previous-window conditioning deliberately
For long audio, condition_on_previous_text=True can help the decoder maintain names, punctuation and topic continuity from one window to the next. The Faster-Whisper documentation also warns that disabling it can make text less consistent while making the model less prone to repetition loops or timestamps going out of sync. Neither choice is universally correct.
OpenAI’s 2022 paper Robust Speech Recognition via Large-Scale Weak Supervision states: “Providing the transcribed text from the preceding window as previous-text conditioning when the applied temperature is below 0.5 further improves the performance.” That statement is specifically about preceding-window conditioning under the stated temperature condition; it is not evidence that an arbitrary dictionary belongs in initial_prompt. Read the original wording in the Whisper paper before generalizing it.
A practical test matrix
- Run the same recordings with initial context only.
- Run them with initial context plus previous-text conditioning enabled.
- Run them with conditioning disabled to check for loops and timestamp drift.
- Keep decoding temperature, beam or sampling settings, model version and language constant across runs.
Compare the resulting transcripts against a reference, and inspect both ordinary errors and failure behavior. A small reduction in one type of spelling error may not justify more repetitions or broken timestamps in a live captioning system.

When your recordings contain long silences or very long uninterrupted speech, test prompt and conditioning variants on those exact conditions. If a transcript begins repeating prompt-like phrases during a pause, try shorter context, separate the audio at a natural boundary, or disable previous-text conditioning for that workflow. Verify that any segmentation change preserves words at the boundary; do not assume a mitigation is harmless without checking the reference transcript.
Evaluate accuracy instead of relying on intuition
No named statistic directly compares recent conversational prompts with dictionary prompts in the cited material. Do not publish a percentage improvement unless you have measured it yourself. A defensible evaluation uses representative recordings and reports enough detail for another engineer to reproduce it.
- Assemble representative audio. Include ordinary speech, domain terms, proper names, code-switching if relevant, background noise and the long pauses that occur in production.
- Create a trusted reference transcript. Mark the intended spelling of names, acronyms and technical terms. Keep the same reference for every prompt variant.
- Define prompt variants before decoding. For example: no prompt, a compact recent-context snippet, and a curated static list. Do not change the prompt after seeing an output in a way that contaminates the comparison.
- Hold decoding conditions constant. Record model and package versions, language, temperature, beam or sampling options, VAD or segmentation choices,
condition_on_previous_text, and maximum token settings. - Measure overall and targeted errors. Calculate your chosen error metric on the full set, then separately count errors in names, acronyms and domain terms. Also record hallucinations, repetitions and timestamp failures.
- Review prompt side effects. A prompt that fixes one spelling but inserts an unspoken product name is not an unqualified improvement. Keep examples of both wins and regressions.
- Report the evaluation set and conditions. State language, model/version, prompt-construction rule and audio conditions with any number you publish.
The most useful comparison axes are relevance, spelling coverage, prompt length, bias toward unspoken terms and measured recognition quality on identical audio. The available sources establish these as sensible evaluation questions, not as pre-measured results.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | Action |
|---|---|---|
| A proper name is repeatedly misspelled | The spelling is absent from current context or the prompt is too generic | Add the exact spelling in a short, natural sentence immediately before the relevant audio; then test whether the change helps without adding unrelated terms. |
| Unspoken words from the prompt appear in output | Prompt contains stale or excessive vocabulary | Remove old turns and broad lists, shorten the context, and retest on the same reference audio. |
| Text repeats or timestamps drift | Previous-window conditioning or prompt interaction is unstable | Test condition_on_previous_text=False, shorten the initial context, and inspect long pauses and chunk boundaries. |
| The prompt appears to have no effect | The term is not acoustically plausible, the prompt is not reaching the first window, or the output budget leaves little context | Log the exact call, verify that the prompt is text or valid token IDs, confirm the first window is being decoded, and compare against a no-prompt run. |
| Accuracy changes after a package or model update | Decoder, tokenizer or model behavior changed | Pin and record versions for evaluation, then rerun the prompt matrix rather than carrying forward an old conclusion. |
Patterns for real-time and batch systems
Real-time dialogue
Maintain a rolling text buffer containing only the latest topic-bearing turns. Before starting a new transcription window, extract names and terms that are still active, render them as a brief sentence, and pass that sentence as initial_prompt. Expire entries when the conversation changes subject. Keep previous-window conditioning as a separately monitored feature, because latency-sensitive systems may prefer fewer repetition and timestamp failures over maximum textual continuity.

Recorded meetings and interviews
For a full recording, the opening context may be useful for the first window, but a single meeting-wide dictionary can become stale. If you process separate sections, build context from the immediately preceding section only when you can verify that the section boundary is reliable. Long pauses and very long uninterrupted turns deserve dedicated tests because they are the conditions highlighted in the Interspeech discussion.
Specialized vocabulary
If a small, stable set of terms is always relevant, compare a compact static list with recent-context prompts rather than assuming one is superior. Keep the list short enough to preserve generation context, and monitor insertions of terms that were not spoken. If the application needs explicit term boosting, evaluate the separate hotwords control instead of disguising a boost request as conversational prose.
Practical takeaway
Start with a concise snippet of recent conversation that contains the likely spelling and topic, pass it through initial_prompt, and trim it aggressively enough to leave room for transcription. Treat condition_on_previous_text, prefix and hotwords as different controls. Because the published evidence offers a practitioner recommendation and qualitative risks rather than a direct prompt-versus-dictionary accuracy statistic, validate the choice on representative audio with fixed settings and a reference transcript.
