Improve Core Web Vitals by finding the metric that fails for real visitors, tracing it to a specific page or cause, and changing only what addresses that cause. Start with field data, use lab tools to diagnose, then check field data again. The current Core Web Vitals are Largest Contentful Paint (LCP), Interaction to Next Paint (INP), and Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS); INP replaced First Input Delay (FID) in March 2024.
What good Core Web Vitals look like
Google’s recommended “good” thresholds are evaluated at the 75th percentile, separately for mobile and desktop. In practice, that means looking at the experience of most visitors in each device segment, not just a single test run.
| Metric | Good threshold | What it describes |
|---|---|---|
| Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) | 2.5 seconds or less | How soon the largest visible image or text block renders. |
| Interaction to Next Paint (INP) | 200 milliseconds or less | How promptly the page responds visually to qualifying user interactions. |
| Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) | 0.1 or less | How much visible content moves unexpectedly. |
These are user-experience recommendations, not guaranteed ranking or business outcomes. Google says its core ranking systems seek to reward content that provides a good page experience, but good Core Web Vitals do not guarantee top rankings; relevance and the broader experience matter too. Google’s Core Web Vitals guidance and page-experience documentation explain the scope.
Establish what real visitors experience
- Check Search Console. Open the Core Web Vitals report and identify the affected groups, device segments, and example URLs. Look for shared templates or components before changing the entire site.
- Inspect representative URLs in PageSpeed Insights (PSI). Confirm whether the displayed field result is for that URL or the origin. PSI uses Chrome User Experience Report (CrUX) field data when available, alongside Lighthouse lab diagnostics. CrUX field data shown in PSI reflects a trailing 28-day period, so it will not immediately reflect a recent release. PSI documentation
- Check which device segment is affected. Mobile and desktop results can differ. A change aimed at one segment may not fix the other.
- Use first-party real-user monitoring (RUM) if public data is missing or too broad. CrUX requires sufficient public, crawlable or indexable URLs and distinct samples; it does not cover every page. RUM can provide per-pageview detail that helps identify which visit, interaction, or page state caused a regression. web.dev’s Web Vitals guidance
Do not treat one URL’s result as proof that every page is affected. When PSI shows origin-level rather than page-level data, its field result may describe a broader set of pages than the one you are debugging.

Use lab tests to find causes, not to declare victory
Lighthouse and browser developer tools help reproduce a load, inspect resource timing, identify JavaScript work, and observe layout behavior. They are controlled diagnostic runs, not a replacement for real-visitor measurements: device speed, network conditions, active work, and user interactions vary outside the lab. A green Lighthouse score therefore does not establish that field performance is good.
Lighthouse cannot measure INP without real user input. Total Blocking Time (TBT) can expose blocking work in a lab run that may contribute to responsiveness problems, but it is a proxy—not an INP measurement or a substitute for field INP. web.dev Web Vitals
For a useful comparison, keep the URL, device profile, network settings, browser conditions, and test procedure consistent. Compare before and after under the same setup, then wait for field data to reflect the change. For ongoing work, monitor real users so a later release can reveal a regression that a one-off test missed.

How to fix LCP
LCP is the rendering time of the largest image or text block in the viewport. Identify the actual LCP element for the affected page, then inspect its timing rather than applying a generic speed tweak. The four stages are Time to First Byte (TTFB), resource load delay, resource load duration, and element render delay. The LCP optimization guide explains how to break them down.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →| What the timing shows | Investigate | Direction for a fix |
|---|---|---|
| High TTFB | Redirect chains, server distance, network conditions, and whether caching is effective. | Change delivery, redirects, or caching only if the measured page and audience point to them. |
| Long delay before the LCP resource starts | Whether the browser can discover and prioritize the resource early, or whether JavaScript makes it available late. | Make the resource discoverable and appropriately prioritized earlier in the page load. |
| Long resource load duration | The LCP resource itself and how it is delivered. | Address the resource or its delivery based on what the waterfall shows. |
| Long element render delay | Browser work that must finish before the element can display. | Find and reduce the work delaying that element’s rendering. |
A high TTFB adds time before FCP and LCP, but TTFB is not a Core Web Vital. web.dev gives 0.8 seconds or less as a rough guide for most sites, not a pass requirement. Consider server, cache, redirect, or geographic delivery changes only when field evidence implicates them; a client-rendered app may rely heavily on early HTML, while a server-rendered page can still show content sooner despite a higher TTFB. web.dev’s TTFB guide
Do not assume one isolated tweak will solve LCP: the result reflects the full path from response to visible content, and the relevant stage depends on the page.

Why INP is poor—and how to improve it
INP reflects responsiveness across qualifying interactions during a visit; its final value represents the longest interaction, sometimes excluding outliers. Start with field data. A RUM tool can help identify the interaction and whether it occurred during or after page load, as well as whether it was a click, keypress, or tap. CrUX provides a useful high-level summary but may not provide enough interaction detail to diagnose the cause.
- Use field data to identify the slow interaction and affected page or template.
- Reproduce that interaction in a browser and inspect the main-thread work and rendering around it.
- Change the work responsible for the delay, then repeat the interaction under the same test conditions.
- Confirm the effect in field data; a lab proxy alone cannot establish an INP improvement.
Use the INP optimization guide to investigate interaction delays. Do not report a Lighthouse run as an INP result when it had no real user input.
How to reduce CLS
CLS reflects both the fraction of visible content affected by a shift and how far it moves. Look for content that appears late or changes size after nearby content is already visible. Common causes include images without dimensions, ads and embeds without reserved dimensions, dynamically injected ads, embeds or iframes, and font swaps.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- Reserve layout space for images, ads, embeds, and other content whose final size is known or can be constrained.
- Check whether fonts or dynamically inserted elements move content that has already rendered.
- Compare the field report with a lab page load. CrUX can account for shifts over the page’s lifetime; a basic lab load may miss shifts that occur later.
Use the CLS optimization guide to connect observed movement to likely causes.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose fixes by cause, impact, and risk
When several interventions seem plausible, compare them against the failing field segment and the cause you have evidence for. A mobile-only problem on one template may call for a different change than a site-wide desktop issue. Consider the likely real-user benefit, implementation effort, regression risk, and whether a fix could improve one metric while worsening another. Official guidance does not establish a universal ranking of fixes; impact and ease depend on the site and the failure being addressed. web.dev Web Vitals
Change one meaningful cause at a time where practical, preserve the measurement conditions, and recheck affected templates and device segments. Avoid treating a plugin, hosting upgrade, or perfect Lighthouse score as a guaranteed remedy without evidence that it targets the failure.

For visual before-and-after checks, ScreenshotNeo can capture a page as an image or PDF; it is a screenshot API, not a Core Web Vitals measurement tool, so keep PSI, Search Console, or RUM for performance diagnosis. One GET request can capture a URL, and its API documentation lists the available options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://example.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://example.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Troubleshooting common measurement and optimization problems
- PSI field data is missing: CrUX does not have sufficient eligible public data for every page or site. Check Search Console, and use first-party RUM when you need actionable per-visit detail.
- PSI shows an origin result for a URL: Confirm the data level before applying a page-specific fix; the field sample may represent the origin rather than that exact URL.
- Lighthouse and field results disagree: They answer different questions under different conditions. Check device segment and data level, and use field data for visitor outcomes and lab runs to investigate reproducible causes.
- A good Lighthouse score does not resolve weak INP: Lighthouse without user input cannot measure INP. Investigate real interactions through field data or RUM, then reproduce them.
- A lab run has good CLS but visitors still see shifts: Look for movement that occurs after the lab’s initial page-load window, including injected content or font changes, and compare with field data.
- A TTFB change did not improve LCP: Recheck the LCP timing stages. The delay may instead be resource discovery, resource loading, or element rendering, and TTFB by itself is not the diagnosis.
Do Core Web Vitals affect Google rankings?
Google’s page-experience documentation says its core ranking systems seek to reward content that provides a good page experience. It also cautions that there is no single page-experience signal, good CWV or third-party reports do not guarantee top rankings, and the most relevant result can still appear when its experience is sub-par. Treat CWV as user-experience goals within a broader effort that includes useful content, security, mobile presentation, avoiding intrusive ads or interstitials, and making the main content clear—not as a ranking shortcut.
