Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallOutdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchIf people say you sound faint, muffled or noisy on wireless-earbud calls, start by reseating and rotating the earbuds so their microphone openings face the correct direction. Then check the fit and ear tips, clear visible debris safely, move out of wind, verify the Bluetooth connection and mute controls, and repeat the call with another person. These steps target outgoing voice pickup; they are different from fixing audio that you hear in the earbuds.
Because true-wireless microphones sit in or on the ears instead of near the mouth, placement and surroundings matter more than many callers expect. Work through the checks in order, changing one factor at a time. That makes it easier to identify whether the cause is physical fit, blocked microphones, wind, connection behavior or a call control.

First identify which side of the call is failing
“Call quality” can describe two separate paths: the microphone signal sent from your earbuds to the other person, and the incoming call audio played to you. Diagnose them separately so you do not replace ear tips for a Bluetooth problem or change noise cancellation when the phone is muted.

True-wireless microphones sit in or on the ears rather than close to the mouth. That placement can make voice pickup and noise filtering more difficult in some situations than a headset with a boom or cord microphone, as Jabra explains.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Before changing anything, ask the other person exactly what they hear. “You are quiet” points toward position, fit or a blocked opening; “you keep cutting out” can also indicate a connection problem; “I hear wind” points toward the environment. At the same time, note whether the incoming voice is clear. This simple distinction prevents troubleshooting the wrong audio path.
Work through these fixes in order
1. Reseat and orient each earbud
Remove and reinsert the earbuds, following the exact wearing diagram for your model. Rotate each earbud to the position specified by its manual so the microphone ports are not pressed against your ear, hair or skin. The correct angle differs between designs. Sennheiser recommends rotating an earbud and making a test call, while Bose provides model-specific orientation guidance in its support instructions: Sennheiser’s voice-pickup guide and Bose’s QuietComfort Earbuds guide.
- Make sure each earbud is fully seated rather than hanging loose.
- Keep the microphone openings facing the direction shown by the manufacturer.
- Test one earbud at a time if your model supports single-ear calling; this can reveal whether one side is obstructed or faulty.
- Move hair, a hat edge or anything else that rests over the outer housing, but do not cover the microphone with your hand while testing.
Do not assume that pointing the stem toward your mouth is correct: some earbuds use microphones on the outer housing or elsewhere on the shell. A position that feels comfortable can still leave a port against the concha of your ear. Make a short test call after each adjustment and ask the recipient whether loudness and clarity changed.
2. Check the ear tips and stability
For earbuds with removable tips, confirm that each tip is the size and type recommended for that model, is pushed fully onto its nozzle and has no tear or deformation. An unstable or unsuitable fit can affect microphone pickup as well as comfort. Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance covers fit and tip condition for applicable Galaxy Buds models: Samsung support.
- Choose from the sizes supplied with the earbuds according to the manual; there is no universal “best” size.
- Replace a stretched, split or permanently misshapen tip.
- After changing a tip, reseat the earbud and repeat the same call test rather than changing several variables at once.
- Check both sides. A loose tip on only one earbud can make callers report an intermittent or one-sided problem.
Replacement ear tips are a sensible purchase only when fit or tip condition is the suspected cause. They will not repair weak Bluetooth, poor phone reception, wind entering the microphone or an application mute setting. Compatibility is model-specific, so look for replacement ear tips for wireless earbuds that explicitly list your exact model rather than relying on a similar-looking product.
3. Inspect and clean the microphone openings
Look for visible wax, lint or other debris around every microphone port and grille. Blockage can make your voice sound quiet or dull. Use only the cleaning method in the exact manufacturer manual; do not push a pin, needle or other sharp object into a port, and do not apply an unapproved liquid or tool. Bose and Sennheiser both direct users to check and clean microphone openings as described in their support guidance: Bose and Sennheiser.
Inspect the openings under good light, including any ports on the underside or edge of the housing. Do not mistake a protective grille for a removable part unless the manual says it is removable. Aggressive scraping can damage the microphone or push debris farther inside. If the instructions call for a particular brush or dry method, follow those instructions exactly.

After cleaning, let the earbuds dry if the manual calls for drying time, put them back in correctly and make another test call. If the sound improves immediately, blockage or fit was probably contributing to the problem.
4. Reduce wind and surrounding noise
Move indoors or behind a windbreak when possible. Strong airflow across an exposed microphone can overwhelm speech processing; Sennheiser states that “Strong wind can make your voice harder to hear.” Bose similarly warns that “Wind noise may enter the microphone capsule and render other audio unintelligible.” Read the full model guidance at Sennheiser and Bose.
- Turn your body or shelter the earbuds from direct wind instead of covering the microphone with your hand.
- Step away from traffic, machinery, speakers and groups of people.
- Check the earbud app or manual for call-noise controls. A setting designed to pass environmental sound into a call can change what the listener hears.
- When comparing two settings, stand in the same place and speak at the same volume so wind and background noise do not disguise the result.
Noise processing has limits imposed by microphone location and hardware design. A quieter environment is often more effective than changing a listening-mode setting. If the listener hears a steady roar only outdoors, reproduce the call indoors before concluding that the earbuds or microphones are defective.
5. Verify the Bluetooth connection and call controls
Keep the phone close to the earbuds and test in a location where the wireless connection is normally stable. Samsung lists connection strength, phone distance, sound settings and mute state among causes of reported Galaxy Buds call trouble: Samsung’s troubleshooting steps.
Recommended Free Tools
- Check the call screen for the selected audio route and confirm that the earbuds, rather than the phone handset or speaker, are selected.
- Tap the in-call microphone control to ensure the phone is not muted.
- Check any touch or button control on the earbuds; an accidental gesture may mute the call.
- Move the phone nearer, remove obvious sources of wireless interference and try again.
- If the problem affects both incoming and outgoing audio, inspect the phone’s Bluetooth and call-audio settings before changing ear tips.
- Check whether the call application has its own audio or mute control in addition to the phone’s call screen.
Menus differ by phone, operating-system version and earbud model, so use the labels shown on your device and the model’s current manual rather than a generic button sequence. If the earbuds connect for music but the phone uses its handset microphone during calls, the issue may be audio routing rather than a damaged earbud microphone. Confirm the selected route while the call is active.
6. Repeat the test with another call
Call a different person or repeat the call after changing only one factor. Bose explicitly recommends trying another call, and Sennheiser recommends a test call after adjusting earbud position. This distinguishes a repeatable earbud problem from a one-off network, recipient or environmental issue.
- If several recipients consistently report the same quiet or muffled voice, return to fit, orientation and microphone openings.
- If only one call or location fails, investigate the phone connection, local reception and surroundings.
- If one earbud consistently performs poorly while the other works, consult the model’s support instructions rather than assuming both units need replacement.
- Write down which earbud was used, where the phone was located and what changed. A short record helps support staff reproduce the fault.
For a controlled comparison, use the same phone and recipient, speak at a normal volume, and change only one item between calls: position, tip, environment, or call setting. If the result follows one earbud across different calls, that is stronger evidence of an earbud-specific issue than a single bad conversation.

Use a quick pre-call checklist
Before an important call, run through this short sequence:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Seat both earbuds according to the model diagram and check that no hair or clothing covers the microphone ports.
- Confirm that the tips are secure, intact and compatible with the model.
- Look for visible debris and clean only as the manual permits.
- Keep the phone nearby and select the earbuds as the active call audio route.
- Check the phone and earbud mute indicators.
- Move away from direct wind and loud machinery.
- Ask the recipient for a quick confirmation that your voice is clear.
This checklist does not guarantee perfect calls in every location. It does, however, address the physical and control problems that can be checked without purchasing new hardware.
Understand ANC versus call-noise cancellation
Active noise cancellation (ANC) primarily reduces ambient sound that you hear through the earbuds. Call-noise cancellation or voice-processing features aim to reduce unwanted sound in the microphone signal sent to the other person. They are different functions, as Huawei’s support explanation describes.
Turning ANC on may make your own surroundings feel quieter without making your transmitted voice clearer. Conversely, a call-noise mode may alter the listener’s experience while leaving incoming audio unchanged. Use the mode names and limitations documented for your exact model, and test in the same environment after each change.
Do not judge a call setting solely by how quiet the room sounds to you. Ask the other person whether the transmitted voice improved, and remember that a mode intended to pass environmental sound into the call can make background audio more prominent. If the manual does not describe a control as affecting calls, do not assume it changes microphone pickup.
When new tips or different earbuds are justified
Replace tips when the physical fit is the evidence
New tips can help when the supplied pair is damaged, slips out, or cannot maintain the manufacturer’s recommended position. Buy only tips listed as compatible with the exact earbud model. A new tip is not a general call-quality upgrade and cannot correct wind, Bluetooth instability, phone mute settings or poor cellular service.
Install one compatible pair as directed, then repeat the same test. If the caller hears no difference and the fit was already stable, further tip purchases are unlikely to solve the problem. Keep the original tips until the replacement has been tested; they provide a useful comparison.

Consider different earbuds only after troubleshooting
There is no established universal “best” wireless earbud for calls from the available manufacturer guidance, and the cited support pages are not independent head-to-head tests. If you are comparing replacements, evaluate documented characteristics rather than a feature-count headline:
| Comparison point | Why it matters for calls |
|---|---|
| Microphone placement and pickup design | Microphones farther from the mouth or shielded by the ear can face harder pickup conditions. |
| Wind and background-noise processing | Processing may reduce unwanted sound, but direct wind and loud sources can still overwhelm the microphone. |
| Fit and stability | An earbud that rotates, loosens or covers its own microphone can make your voice inconsistent. |
| Phone, app and connection compatibility | Supported devices, firmware and Bluetooth behavior affect call routing and stability. |
| Mute and call controls | Clear physical or touch controls reduce accidental mute and make the call state easier to verify. |
Separate a manufacturer’s feature claim from an independently measured comparison. No comparative call-quality figure establishes one design as best for every listener, phone and environment. A model with a prominent stem is not automatically better; documented microphone placement, stable fit and compatibility with your phone are more useful selection criteria.
What to do if the problem remains
Once you have reseated the earbuds, checked tips, cleared the openings, reduced noise, verified the connection and repeated the call, open the current manual and support page for the exact model. Follow its official update, reset or pairing procedure only when directed; reset steps differ and can remove saved settings. Do not apply a reset simply because a call was poor once.
If the same microphone fault persists across multiple calls and phones or locations, contact the manufacturer’s support team with the model, phone, software versions and the tests you already completed. Tell support whether the problem affects one earbud or both, whether incoming audio is normal, and whether wind or movement changes the result. Those details help distinguish a physical microphone fault from fit, routing or connection behavior.
Frequently asked questions
Why can people hear me poorly when I hear them clearly?
That pattern points mainly to the outgoing microphone path. Check earbud orientation, fit, microphone openings, wind and mute controls first. Incoming audio can remain clear even when a microphone port is blocked or positioned against the ear.
Should I buy larger or smaller ear tips to improve calls?
Use the size that gives your model the stable fit described in its manual; there is no universal best size. Replace a tip only when it is damaged, unsuitable or unable to keep the earbud in the recommended position, and confirm exact model compatibility.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDoes turning on ANC make my voice clearer to callers?
Not necessarily. ANC mainly changes what you hear. Call-noise cancellation affects the transmitted microphone signal, and the two functions are separate. Check your model’s documentation and ask the other person about the result.

Why are calls worse outside than indoors?
Wind can enter the microphone and make speech difficult to understand, while traffic and other loud sources add background noise. Move behind a windbreak or indoors and repeat the call before changing hardware.
How do I know whether Bluetooth is the cause?
If both incoming and outgoing audio cut out, or the result changes with phone distance, check the selected audio route, connection stability and phone settings. Keep the phone close and compare another call in a stable location.
Why does only one earbud sound bad on calls?
One side may be rotated incorrectly, blocked, loose or faulty. Test each earbud separately if the model supports it, then follow the exact support procedure for that model rather than replacing both immediately.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can cleaning damage the microphone?
It can if you push sharp objects into a port or use liquids and tools that the manufacturer does not approve. Inspect and clean only according to the exact manual, and observe any required drying time before testing.
When should I replace the earbuds?
Consider replacement only after consistent failures across multiple calls and environments, with correct fit, clean openings, stable connection and verified mute settings. Compare microphone design, wind handling, fit, compatibility and controls; no single model is proven best for every caller.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the fastest way to improve wireless-earbud call quality?
Reseat and orient the earbuds correctly, ensure the microphone openings are unobstructed, move out of wind, verify the call is not muted and repeat a test call. These checks address the most common physical and control problems before you buy anything.
Will replacement ear tips fix a quiet microphone?
Only when the existing tips are damaged, unsuitable or unable to keep the earbuds in the correct position. Tips cannot fix Bluetooth instability, wind, poor phone reception or a muted call, and compatibility is specific to the earbud model.
Is ANC the same as call-noise cancellation?
No. ANC mainly reduces sound you hear, while call-noise cancellation processes sound transmitted through the microphones. A change that makes your surroundings quieter may not make your voice clearer to the other person.
What should I tell manufacturer support if troubleshooting fails?
Provide the exact earbud model, phone, software versions and whether the issue affects one or both earbuds. Explain whether incoming audio is clear, describe the environments tested, and list the fit, cleaning, connection and call tests already completed.
The Bottom Line
For clearer wireless-earbud calls, start with the physical basics: follow the model’s orientation, maintain a stable tip fit, keep microphone openings clean and avoid direct wind. Then verify the phone’s Bluetooth route and mute state and repeat the call with another recipient. Buy replacement tips only when fit evidence supports it, and consider different earbuds only after these tests show a persistent, model-specific limitation.
