Most Shokz call problems are fixed without buying a new headset. Check mute status and input routing first, then correct microphone position, remove anything covering the mic, clean and dry the opening, and move away from extreme noise. If the problem remains, use only the reset procedure for your exact model and then contact Shokz support.
Because Shokz headphones use an open-ear design, callers can still hear you clearly while you remain aware of your surroundings, but neither the earphones nor their call-noise processing can make a windy street, gym, or construction site sound silent. The steps below separate routing errors from physical microphone problems so you can test the right fix in the right order.

Start with this five-minute diagnosis
Work through these checks in order. Stop when a test identifies the cause; changing several settings at once makes it difficult to know what helped.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Check mute. Look at the call application’s microphone button, the keyboard mute key, and any physical mute control on the headset or computer. Unmute before testing.
- Confirm the call input. On a phone, verify that the call is using the connected Shokz headset rather than the handset microphone. On a computer, select the Shokz microphone in both the operating-system sound settings and the calling application’s own audio settings. Choose the headset’s Hands-Free call input mode when it is listed; selecting a music-only output does not prove that the microphone is routed correctly.
- Make a local recording. Record a short sample with the device’s built-in voice recorder. A clean recording points toward the calling app, account, or network; a muffled or silent recording points toward the headset, its position, or its connection.
- Inspect position and blockage. Put the microphone where the model expects it, move hair or clothing away, and check for dirt or moisture in the microphone opening.
- Retest in a quiet room. If the recording improves indoors, the original problem may be environmental noise rather than a failed microphone.
| What the listener reports | Most likely first check | Useful confirmation |
|---|---|---|
| No voice or complete silence | Mute state and selected input | Built-in recorder shows whether the headset is producing a signal |
| Voice sounds distant or faint | Microphone position and obstructions | Record while holding the mic at its correct location |
| Voice is muffled after rain, sweat, or a workout | Moisture in or around the microphone opening | Dry the headset, then make another local recording |
| Voice is understandable indoors but poor outdoors | Wind and surrounding noise | Repeat the call from a quieter, sheltered location |
| Problem follows the headset into every app | Physical fault or model-specific setting | Try the exact model reset, then contact support if unchanged |
Verify mute and call-input routing
On a phone
During the call, open the audio-source menu and select the connected Shokz headset. Confirm that the call screen does not show a crossed-out microphone. If the phone keeps switching to its own microphone, disconnect and reconnect the headset, then select it again after the call has started. A quick recording in the phone’s standard recorder can reveal whether the phone sees the Shokz microphone outside the calling app.

On Windows or another computer
There are two independent choices: the system input and the calling application’s input. Open the computer’s sound settings, select the Shokz headset as the microphone, and choose its Hands-Free or call-input profile when available. Then open the audio page inside the meeting or calling application and select the same Shokz microphone there. Applications can retain an old input choice even after the operating system changes, so check both places.
Play back a short recording before joining an important call. If the recorder captures your voice but the call application does not, the headset is probably working and the application’s permission, input selection, or mute state needs attention. If neither captures your voice, continue with the physical checks below.
Place the microphone correctly and keep it unobstructed
OpenComm and OpenMeet boom microphones
These models have an adjustable boom. Position the microphone near the corner of your mouth rather than beside your cheek or pointing away from your face. Keep the boom stable while speaking. A boom that has rotated upward, sits too far forward, or points toward your ear can make speech quiet even when the headset is connected correctly.
Other Shokz models with integrated microphones
Wear the headset in its normal orientation and make sure the microphone openings are not pressed against hair, a hat, a collar, a helmet strap, or other clothing. Remove the obstruction temporarily and record another sample. Do not cover the microphone with tape, foam, or an improvised windscreen unless the model’s instructions specifically allow it; an added layer can reduce speech pickup.

Check fit after moving or sharing the headset
Small changes in placement can alter the voice level. Re-seat the headset, keep the microphone side in its intended position, and ask the other person to compare a sentence spoken with the headset correctly positioned against one spoken while it is displaced. This simple A/B test is more useful than relying on a music playback test, because music output does not exercise the call microphone.
Clean the microphone opening and remove moisture
Routine cleaning
If dirt or debris may be blocking the microphone hole, gently clean it with a dry cotton swab. Use light pressure and avoid pushing fibers into the opening. Do not pour liquid into the microphone, spray cleaner directly onto it, or use a sharp object to dig inside. After cleaning, make a new recording rather than judging the result from a music track.
General moisture recovery
A sudden muffled sound after heavy rain, showering, intense exercise, or a very humid environment can be moisture-related. Power the headset down, wipe the exterior, and leave it in a well-ventilated place until it is fully dry. Keep it away from direct heat such as a hair dryer or radiator, which can damage components or seals. Test the microphone only after drying; repeated calls while moisture remains can make diagnosis harder.
OpenRun Pro 2 procedure for a muffled microphone
For OpenRun Pro 2, Shokz’s model-specific advice is to gently shake the headset at different angles, wipe the microphone with absorbent tissue or a dry cloth, and leave it in a ventilated place for several hours. This is a moisture-removal procedure for that model, not a reset and not a guarantee that a damaged component will recover. If the sound remains muffled after the headset has dried, continue with the input test and support steps.

Control the call environment and set realistic expectations
Open-ear listening intentionally leaves outside sound audible. That design helps with awareness of traffic, colleagues, and announcements, but it does not provide the acoustic isolation of an in-ear headset. A caller may therefore hear more of your surroundings, and you may hear those surroundings while speaking.
Shokz describes call noise reduction as less effective in extremely noisy environments. Wind, traffic, machinery, loud crowds, and hard reflective rooms can overwhelm a microphone’s processing. Move indoors or behind a windbreak when possible, face away from the wind, and pause the conversation while passing a loud source. Test from the location where you normally call; a quiet-room result cannot promise the same performance on a busy street.
Noise reduction is designed to improve speech intelligibility, not to erase every sound. If the listener reports that your voice is clear but the background remains audible, that may be the expected limit of an open-ear headset rather than a fault.
Reset only with instructions for the exact model
A reset can help when microphone pickup or noise-cancellation behavior remains wrong after routing, placement, cleaning, and drying checks. Button combinations differ among Shokz products, so do not apply one model’s sequence to another.

OpenComm reset sequence
Shokz’s OpenComm support instructions specify this order:
- Turn the headset off.
- Hold the volume-plus button for 5–7 seconds until pairing mode starts.
- Hold the multifunction button, volume-plus, and volume-minus together for 3–5 seconds, until you hear beeps or feel vibration.
- Turn the headset off again.
- Power it on, pair it with the phone or computer again, and repeat the local recording test.
If your OpenComm has different controls or the indicators do not match these instructions, stop and use the support instructions for that exact revision. A failed reset attempt is not evidence that the microphone is defective.
Other models
Use the reset method published for your model and regional version. Do not assume that an OpenRun, OpenRun Pro 2, OpenMeet, or another headset shares the OpenComm button sequence. After any reset, remove the old Bluetooth pairing from the device if the model’s instructions require it, pair again, and verify the call input in the application.

Model and connection details that affect calls
| Model or family | Call-related point | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| OpenComm | Adjustable boom microphone; model-specific reset sequence | Keep the boom near your mouth and follow the OpenComm reset steps only |
| OpenMeet | Boom microphone placement affects pickup | Align the boom near your mouth and remove hair or clothing from the mic |
| OpenRun | Bluetooth 5.1; compatible with iPhone, Android, Bluetooth-enabled Windows PCs, and Bluetooth-enabled Mac computers | Confirm the connected headset is selected as the call input in the device and app |
| OpenRun Pro 2 | Muffling can follow sweat or rain | Use the shake, wipe, and several-hour ventilation procedure before retesting |
| OpenComm2 UC 2025 Upgrade | Shokz describes an improved noise-cancelling microphone, DSP and cVc processing, and a Loop120 wireless adapter | Verify the exact model suffix, region, and included adapter before purchase |
Compatibility means that a device can establish a Bluetooth connection; it does not guarantee identical microphone behavior in every operating-system build or calling application. Computer calls deserve a separate check of the system input and the application’s input even when music playback works normally.

Use the symptom to choose the next action
The microphone is silent in every application
- Confirm that the headset is powered on and connected for calls, not merely shown as an available music output.
- Check mute at the headset, operating-system, and application levels.
- Select the Hands-Free input profile on the computer.
- Make a built-in recorder test. If it is still silent after reconnecting and repositioning, use the model’s reset instructions and then contact support.
The voice is quiet, distant, or cuts in and out
- Reposition the OpenComm or OpenMeet boom near the mouth.
- Remove hair, hats, collars, and straps from integrated microphone openings.
- Keep the headset stable instead of touching or turning it while speaking.
- Compare a local recording with a call. If only the call cuts out, investigate the application or network rather than changing the microphone hardware.
The voice is muffled
- Inspect the opening for lint or debris and clean it gently with a dry cotton swab.
- Think back to rain, sweat, a shower, or a hard workout. Dry the headset before testing again.
- For OpenRun Pro 2, follow its angle-shaking, absorbent-wipe, and several-hour ventilation guidance.
- If muffling remains in a dry, quiet recording, proceed to the reset and support path.
The listener hears a lot of background noise
- Repeat the call in a quieter location to distinguish environmental limits from a hardware problem.
- Reduce wind exposure and move away from machinery, traffic, or crowds.
- Remember that open-ear construction does not block outside sound.
- If the voice itself is clear and only the surroundings are audible, changing position may help more than changing Bluetooth settings.
Decide whether an upgrade is justified
Buy a different headset only after the free diagnostic steps show that your current model does not meet the environment or workflow you actually need. A new headset will not fix a muted application, a blocked microphone, incorrect computer routing, or moisture in the existing unit.
When a call-focused model may make sense
Frequent computer callers may prefer a headset built around a boom microphone and a dedicated wireless computer workflow. Shokz describes the OpenComm2 UC 2025 Upgrade as including the Loop120 wireless adapter and an improved noise-cancelling microphone with DSP and cVc processing. Those are manufacturer feature descriptions, not independent proof that it outperforms every other headset. Confirm current regional availability, the exact suffix, and whether the adapter is included before ordering.
Questions to answer before spending money
- Do you mainly call from a phone or a computer?
- Would a boom microphone be easier to position than an integrated microphone?
- Do you need a direct Bluetooth connection, an adapter-based computer workflow, or both?
- Is the problem present in a quiet room and in a local recording, or only in one application or location?
- Have you completed the exact model’s cleaning, drying, and reset guidance?
When to contact Shokz support or request warranty review
Escalate when the microphone remains silent, distorted, or consistently muffled after you have verified routing, corrected placement, cleaned and dried the headset, tested in a quiet room, and used the correct model reset. Give support useful evidence: the model name and revision, purchase region and date, the device and calling application, whether the built-in recorder also fails, and the steps already completed.

Quick Recap
Prevent microphone problems on future calls
- Before an important meeting, make a ten-second recording and listen to it.
- Keep the microphone opening clear of hair, collars, hats, and helmet straps.
- After exercise or rain, wipe the headset and let it ventilate before storing it.
- Store the headset where dust and condensation are unlikely to enter the microphone opening.
- On a computer, recheck both the system input and the calling application’s input after updates or when switching headsets.
- Use a quieter, sheltered position when wind or machinery overwhelms call noise reduction.
- Keep the support instructions for your exact model available instead of relying on a reset sequence copied from another headset.
