Check the product name in the Bose app, on the headphones, or on the packaging before connecting a charger. The word “Ultra” alone is not enough: QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds are a different product again. If the name does not clearly identify a generation, do not assume that a USB-C charging instruction for 2nd Gen applies to the original model.

How to improve battery life on the original model
Turn Immersive Audio off when runtime matters
Bose’s original-model rating is up to 24 hours with Immersive Audio off and up to 18 hours with it on. That six-hour difference is the clearest documented way to extend a charge on this model. Turn Immersive Audio off when you need the longest session, then restore it when the spatial effect is more important than runtime.
Use the setting strategically rather than treating it as an all-or-nothing choice. For a long flight, workday or commute, leave Immersive Audio off and enable it for selected music or movie sessions. The setting change targets the one power difference Bose quantifies; it is more defensible than promising that an undocumented reset or calibration routine will add hours.
Understand what the rating does—and does not—prove
These are manufacturer “up to” figures, not a promise that every listening session will last that long. Bose says battery life varies with settings and use. Its disclosed 2023 test used production-representative headphones, A2DP Bluetooth streaming, Quiet Mode, 75 dB playback loudness and EQ set to zero. Your volume, listening mode, wireless activity and other settings can produce a shorter result.
No independent real-world battery test is established for this guide. The 24-hour and 18-hour values are Bose product and support claims under the conditions above. They are useful for comparing the two Immersive Audio settings on the same model, but they should not be treated as a guaranteed everyday runtime or as a measurement of battery health.
If you want a useful personal baseline, note the charge time, Immersive Audio state, approximate volume, mode, start time and stop time for several sessions. A single short session can reflect louder playback or different use; a consistent decline under similar conditions is more useful information for support.
What is not documented as a battery-life fix
Bose does not identify another specific setting, charging cycle, calibration routine or reset as a documented battery-life improvement for the original model in the cited support material. Avoid assuming that repeatedly running the battery flat, installing a particular cable or performing an unofficial reset will increase capacity. Those actions can also make it harder to describe the original symptom accurately.

- Remove the headphones from your head. Bose explicitly says the original model will not charge while it is being worn and connected to external power.
- Locate the port. Insert the small end of the USB cable into the USB-C port on the left earcup.
- Use the specified source. Connect the other end to a USB-A power source, such as a computer or a wall charger.
- Check the status light. Bose’s model-specific support article describes a solid amber light while charging and a solid white light when fully charged.
- Allow enough time. Bose Support says to allow up to three hours for a full charge.
Keep the connector fully seated, but do not force it if it feels misaligned. If you use a computer, make sure the port is powered; if you use a wall charger, confirm that the USB-A outlet is switched on. These checks establish that the setup matches Bose’s stated arrangement before you diagnose the headset.
Bluetooth is disabled while the original headphones are charging. The owner’s guide also says that when the battery is depleted, connecting USB power first turns the headphones off and starts charging; after charging begins, they can be powered on again for use. The same guide says the original model does not support USB audio, so plugging in the cable is not a wired USB listening mode.
Why Bose’s charging figures and light colors appear inconsistent
Bose’s official pages do not present identical specifications for the original model. The model-specific support article is the better source for a charging problem because it is written as the charging procedure for that headset, but the discrepancy should not be hidden.

Do not use the green-versus-white difference alone to diagnose a defective battery. First verify the generation and follow the model-specific support instructions. If your light behavior still does not match the guidance for the identified model, contact Bose support and report the exact model name, cable, power source and observed light.

Why your original QuietComfort Ultra headphones may not be charging
1. The wrong product or generation was identified
Charging instructions for the original over-ear model do not apply to QuietComfort Ultra (2nd Gen) or to the earbuds. Confirm the full product name before troubleshooting. A 2nd Gen unit is designed for USB-C charging while worn; the original is not.
2. The headphones are still on your head
Take them off before connecting power. This is not merely a preferred safety step: Bose says the original model will not charge while on your head and connected to an external power source.
3. The cable is in the wrong place or is not fully seated
The original model’s charging port is USB-C on the left earcup. Disconnect and reconnect the small connector so it is fully seated. Inspect the connection for obvious looseness or physical damage, but do not force a plug into a port.

4. The power source does not match Bose’s instructions
The original-model support article specifies a USB-A power source, such as a computer or wall charger. Confirm that the other end of the cable is connected to an active USB-A outlet or port rather than assuming that any USB-C arrangement follows the same procedure.

Allow up to three hours for a full charge according to Bose Support. A short connection may not produce a full-charge indication, especially when the battery was deeply depleted.
6. The indicator does not match the support article
For the original model, Bose Support describes solid amber during charging and solid white at full charge. The separate product page describes a green full-charge light, so the color conflict is an official documentation inconsistency rather than proof of a failed unit. Record what you see and ask Bose support to interpret it for your exact model if the headphones still do not operate.
7. The cable or accessory is unsuitable
If the supplied cable is missing or visibly damaged, a replacement USB-C charging cable can be reasonable, but it must be paired with the original model’s USB-A source guidance. A USB-A wall charger is another optional way to provide the named source if you normally charge from a computer. Bose’s material does not establish a particular third-party cable, charger, price or certification as a cure. Buying an accessory cannot repair a depleted internal battery or a damaged charging port.
If those checks do not restore charging
Bose’s cited original-model article provides the connection procedure but not a complete diagnostic flow for a headset that still refuses to charge. The available evidence does not establish a particular factory reset, cable-swap sequence, battery-calibration routine or charge-cycle trick as an official fix for this model. If the headphones remain unresponsive after the correct setup and full stated charge period, contact Bose support or an authorized service channel for model-specific assistance. Can you use the original headphones while they charge?
Do not expect normal Bluetooth listening during charging. Bose says Bluetooth is disabled while the original QuietComfort Ultra is connected to power and charging. The owner’s guide describes a limited recovery behavior for a depleted battery: connect USB power, let the headphones power off and begin charging, then power them on again. That instruction does not turn the original headset into a USB-audio device; Bose says the model does not support USB audio.
If the ability to listen while charging is essential, verify whether you actually own the 2nd Gen model. Bose’s 2nd Gen FAQ says it can be connected to a USB-C powered source and worn normally while charging, with the qualification that charging may take longer during use.

Runtime that has declined substantially over time
The cited Bose pages do not give a capacity threshold, service-life estimate or user battery-replacement instructions for diagnosing normal wear. Do not infer a precise remaining capacity from a single session. Document the model, settings, approximate volume, start and stop times, and charging behavior, then provide those details to Bose support if the decline is persistent.
