How to Improve Bluetooth Headphone Sound Quality on Your Phone

The fastest way to improve Bluetooth headphone sound is to identify whether the problem is tone (too bass-heavy, thin or sharp) or the Bluetooth connection (dropouts, crackling or distortion). First confirm that your phone is sending audio to the intended headphones, reseat them for a proper fit, use the headphone maker’s app or a supported phone EQ, and compare changes at the same volume. For interruptions, test a downloaded track with the phone nearby before changing codec settings.

Start by identifying the symptom

Different symptoms have different causes. Equalization can change the balance of bass, midrange and treble, but it cannot repair a weak radio link. Conversely, changing a codec will not make headphones that sound too bright or loose in the ear suddenly fit better.

What you hear Most useful first check What not to assume
Music is consistently too bass-heavy, thin or sharp Check fit, then make a small EQ adjustment in the headphone app or a phone accessibility/audio setting that supports your model. A different codec is not a guaranteed tonal improvement.
One ear is quieter Check left/right balance, headphone seating, ear-tip fit and the source recording. Forcing a higher-quality codec is unlikely to fix a balance problem.
Audio cuts out, crackles or distorts intermittently Play a downloaded track nearby, remove obstructions and test away from crowded wireless environments. EQ cannot stabilize a failing Bluetooth connection.
Music quality drops during a call or game Check whether the headset microphone is active and whether both devices support Bluetooth LE Audio. Media playback and microphone-active audio do not always use the same Bluetooth behavior.

Record the phone and headphone combination

Bluetooth controls depend on the phone model, operating-system version, headphone model and sometimes the regional software build. Note those details before changing advanced settings. The same menu may be named differently on two Android phones, and an iPhone feature may support only specified headphone families.

  • Write down the phone model and OS version.
  • Identify the exact headphone model, not just the product family.
  • Check whether the headphone manufacturer provides a companion app with EQ, fit tests or connection-priority controls.
  • Confirm that the headphones are actually selected as the current audio output rather than the phone speaker, a car system or another paired device.

Use a familiar recording for comparisons. Make one change at a time and match the listening volume before deciding that an EQ curve or codec sounds better; louder playback can otherwise seem more detailed even when the setting itself did not improve anything.

Improve tonal balance with fit and EQ

Check seating and isolation first

In-ear headphones need a consistent seal to deliver their intended bass response. Reseat each side, try the supplied tip sizes if your model includes them, and make sure both housings sit at the same angle. Over-ear headphones should form an even seal around both ears without the headband pulling one side higher. This is a diagnostic step, not a promise that a particular accessory will correct every design.

If the sound changes dramatically when you press an earbud inward, the fit is affecting the bass. Fix the seating before making a large EQ boost, because an EQ tuned around a poor seal may sound excessively bass-heavy once the fit is corrected.

Use the headphone’s own controls where available

The manufacturer’s app is usually the most model-aware place to change equalization. Look for an EQ, sound profile, hearing test or custom preset. Start with small adjustments: reduce a band that sounds overpowering or add only a little energy where the recording seems recessed. Save a named profile so you can return to the original setting.

EQ changes tonal balance only. It does not increase Bluetooth range, raise the negotiated codec capability or cure radio interference. If an app offers both an EQ and a connection-priority setting, treat them as separate controls.

iPhone: Headphone Accommodations

Apple documents Headphone Accommodations under Settings > Accessibility > Audio & Visual > Headphone Accommodations. The feature is available on iOS and iPadOS 14 and later, but the supported AirPods, Beats and EarPods families are enumerated by Apple; it is not a universal EQ for every third-party Bluetooth headphone.

For supported AirPods models, Apple describes a three-band Custom Audio Setup/EQ as part of the accommodation controls. Use the preview and make modest changes, then compare with the same track at the same volume. The page also includes a left/right balance control, which is useful when one side appears quieter after fit and cleanliness checks.

Android: use the controls your device actually exposes

Android phones vary widely. Some include a system equalizer, hearing or accessibility controls, while others leave EQ entirely to the headphone app. Use the exact controls documented for your phone and headphone model rather than assuming that a menu shown in a generic tutorial exists on your device.

When a system EQ is available, begin from flat and move one or two bands at a time. A narrow cut can be more natural than a large boost, and excessive boosts can consume headroom and create distortion. If distortion appears only after an EQ change, reduce the boost or lower the playback level and retest.

Fix one-sided, weak or unbalanced sound

  1. Pause the track and check that the left and right channels are not intentionally different in the recording.
  2. Reseat both headphones and verify that each side is fully charged and connected.
  3. Inspect the phone’s left/right balance control. On supported iPhone combinations, it is part of Headphone Accommodations; Android locations and labels vary.
  4. Play a second recording. If only one app or file is affected, the Bluetooth link may be fine.
  5. Return EQ to flat and retest before making any further changes.

Do not use a codec change to compensate for a balance or fit issue. Codec negotiation affects how audio is transported; it does not independently set the level of the left and right drivers.

Troubleshoot cuts, crackles and distortion

Run a downloaded-track test

Streaming adds a separate network variable. Download a familiar track to the phone and play it while keeping the phone within a couple of metres of the headphones. If the downloaded file is stable but streaming cuts out, investigate the phone’s network connection or app rather than changing Bluetooth audio settings. If both sources fail, continue with the wireless checks below.

Improve the radio conditions

Keep the phone close to the headphones, with as few obstructions as practical. A pocket, bag or the position of your body can block the path, especially when the phone and one earbud are separated by your body. Move away from areas with many active wireless devices or other likely sources of radio congestion. Test in a quieter location before concluding that the headphones are defective.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Make the test repeatable: use the same downloaded track, phone position and listening volume. If the problem appears only in one place, that points to the environment. If it follows the headphones everywhere, continue to re-pair and check for model-specific firmware or support instructions.

  • MULTIPOINT CONNECTION: Quickly switch between two devices at once.

Forget, restart and pair again

Apple’s connection guidance for audio that cuts in and out or is distorted is to compare a downloaded track nearby, keep the source close and unobstructed, avoid busy or interference-prone locations, and then forget or unpair, restart the devices and pair again if interruptions persist. Android manufacturers use different labels, but the same clean-pair sequence is broadly useful:

  1. Open the phone’s Bluetooth settings and remove or forget the headphone entry.
  2. Turn the headphones off and back on. Restart the phone.
  3. Put the headphones into their documented pairing mode.
  4. Pair them again and select them as the active audio output.
  5. Repeat the downloaded-track test before changing EQ or codec preferences.

Re-pairing clears a stale connection state; it does not add codec support that the hardware lacks.

Understand codecs before changing them

A Bluetooth codec is the audio format negotiated between the phone (the sender) and the headphones (the receiver or sink). Android’s Bluetooth services documentation states: “This negotiation selects the best codec supported by both the sender and the sink to provide high-quality audio.” The important qualification is supported by both. A phone menu cannot make headphones support a codec they do not contain, and a named codec is not automatically audible as an improvement for every listener or recording.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the headphone specifications and the phone’s actual Bluetooth settings together. A codec listed in a general phone specification may not be active with your particular headphones. Some combinations fall back to another mutually supported codec, and the active choice can change when conditions or connected devices change.

Android Developer options

On Android 4.2 and later, Developer options are commonly enabled by opening the phone’s software information and tapping Build number seven times. Android cautions that the location and label can differ by manufacturer and device. Once enabled, look for Bluetooth Audio Codec; some phones also expose an LDAC quality preference.

These are advanced, manufacturer-specific controls. Do not force a sample rate, bit depth or codec simply because an online recipe lists it. If the selected value is unsupported, Android may revert to another option or the connection may fail to improve. After any change, verify the active connection with a downloaded track and restore the default if stability worsens.

Sound quality versus connection stability

Some headphone apps provide a sound-quality-priority mode and a stable-connection-priority mode. Sony Support warns: “Depending on the environment, the connection may become unstable.” Its guidance is to choose stable-connection priority when the link is unreliable. The exact control and available codecs depend on the headphone model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Treat this as a trade-off, not a quality ranking. A theoretically higher-quality transport that drops packets is worse to listen to than a stable mode that plays continuously. Compare both modes in the place where you normally listen, and keep the stable option if interruptions are more noticeable than any tonal difference.

Calls, gaming and microphone-active audio

Music playback and microphone-active use can behave differently. During a call or game chat, the headset microphone is enabled and the system may switch to a different Bluetooth operating mode, so music can sound narrower or lower quality than when the microphone is off.

Android documents Bluetooth LE Audio and the LC3 codec as features that can maintain higher output quality while a compatible headset microphone is in use. This is hardware-dependent: the phone, headphones and operating-system implementation must all support the feature. Android exposes a hardware support check; the presence of a LE Audio menu on one device does not prove that every paired headset can use it.

For a call or game, compare the same headset with the microphone disabled and enabled. If the change occurs only when the microphone is active, it is likely a mode or compatibility limitation rather than an EQ problem. Use wired audio or another supported audio path when your application requires both microphone input and the widest possible music bandwidth but your Bluetooth combination cannot provide it.

Choose settings by priority

Priority Recommended approach Trade-off
Natural tone for music Secure the fit, start from flat EQ and make small changes in the headphone app or supported phone controls. EQ preferences are personal; no curve is objectively best for every listener.
Fewest interruptions Keep the phone close, remove obstructions, avoid congested locations and choose a stable-connection mode when offered. A stability-first mode may use a different codec or transport setting.
Highest available codec capability Confirm support at both ends, then test the codec that the phone and headphones actually negotiate. Compatibility and radio conditions can override a preferred selection.
Calls or gaming with the microphone Check LE Audio/LC3 support on the complete phone-headset combination. LE Audio is not universal, and classic Bluetooth microphone behavior may reduce media quality.
Correct channel balance Check seating, the recording, and left/right balance controls before touching codecs. Balance controls cannot repair a damaged driver or blocked earbud grille.

  1. Confirm the intended headphones are the active output and that both sides have charge.
  2. Identify whether the complaint is tonal, channel imbalance, intermittent connection, or microphone-active quality.
  3. Reseat the headphones and check the left/right balance setting.
  4. For tonal complaints, use the headphone app or a supported iPhone/Android EQ. Compare at matched volume.
  5. For interruptions, play a downloaded track with the phone nearby and unobstructed.
  6. Move away from crowded wireless areas and retest.
  7. Forget or unpair the headphones, restart the phone and headphones, and pair again.
  8. Only after the basic test is stable, inspect codec and connection-priority settings.
  9. If a codec or quality-priority setting causes instability, return to the previous setting or choose stable-connection priority.
  10. For microphone-active problems, check complete-device LE Audio compatibility rather than applying a music EQ.

This sequence prevents a codec experiment from masking a simple fit, output-selection or interference problem.

When replacing the headphones is justified

Consider different headphones only after the existing combination passes the fit, downloaded-track, proximity and re-pairing checks. A replacement can make sense when the current model lacks the EQ or accessibility controls you need, does not support a codec or LE Audio feature required by your phone, fits poorly despite trying its available adjustments, or remains unreliable in the same environment after clean pairing.

Compare a prospective model on four practical axes:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Compatibility: codec and LE Audio support at both the phone and headphone ends, plus the required OS version.
  • Sound control: whether the companion app offers EQ or profiles you can save.
  • Reliability: whether it offers a stable-connection option suitable for your listening environment.
  • Use case and fit: comfortable, secure seating for music, and microphone behavior that suits calls or gaming.

The available evidence does not establish a universally best model, a guaranteed audible gain from a particular codec, or a numeric improvement in sound quality. Treat those as combination- and listener-dependent decisions rather than promises attached to a specification.

What the phone can and cannot fix

  • A phone EQ or Headphone Accommodations can alter tonal balance on supported combinations.
  • A balance control can correct an intentional channel-level mismatch in software, but not a physical driver fault.
  • Codec menus can select only among options supported by both devices.
  • Connection-priority modes can trade peak transport preference for reliability.
  • LE Audio and LC3 can improve microphone-active behavior only when the complete hardware and software chain supports them.
  • No phone setting can guarantee a better fit, remove all environmental interference or make unsupported headphone hardware compatible.

Final recommendation

Start with the reversible basics: select the correct output, secure the fit, check balance and use a supported EQ for tonal complaints. For crackles and dropouts, use a downloaded track nearby, remove obstructions, avoid congested areas and re-pair before touching codec menus. Change codec or quality-priority settings only after confirming support at both ends, and favor stability when a quality-priority mode becomes unreliable. Treat LE Audio as a compatibility feature for supported phone-and-headset combinations, not a universal sound-quality switch.
