The best settings depend on whether your unit runs SteamOS or Windows 11, and how much performance your game needs. No single tweak has a guaranteed runtime gain.
Choose a lower power mode for gaming
On the SteamOS Legion Go S, press Quick Access Key + Y to switch thermal modes. Lenovo lists three presets that matter most for balancing performance and battery use:

These modes trade performance for lower power use; a demanding game may not run well at the lowest setting. If a game struggles, move up to Balance or adjust its resolution, graphics quality, or frame-rate target before settling on a mode. SteamOS also offers a Custom mode from 5–40 W and a TDP Limit in the Quick Access Menu’s Performance section. Those options let you tune power draw, but the usable setting varies by game. Lenovo’s Legion Go S SteamOS guide describes Quiet mode as: “You want to save battery power.”
Reduce screen power use
Lower brightness when you can
A dimmer screen uses less power, but keep it bright enough to read comfortably in your surroundings. Lenovo’s battery-life caveat specifically identifies screen brightness as a factor affecting runtime.

Lower the refresh rate if smoothness is less important
The Legion Go S has an 8-inch, 1920 × 1200 display with a 48–120 Hz variable refresh rate. A lower refresh rate can reduce display power use, with less smooth motion as the trade-off. On Windows 11, open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display and select a lower available refresh rate. Microsoft notes that higher refresh rates use more power. The available choices depend on the device configuration and Windows version. Microsoft’s refresh-rate instructions explain the Windows setting.
Use the right power controls for your operating system
Windows 11
Go to Settings > System > Power & battery. Choose Best power efficiency or enable Energy saver when battery life matters more than maximum performance. In the same area, shorten the screen-off and sleep timers so the device does not stay awake unnecessarily.

- In Windows graphics settings, choose Power saving for eligible apps if the option is available.
- Turn off Wi-Fi or Bluetooth when you are not using them.
- Check brightness and refresh rate as well as power mode; these are separate controls.
Menu labels and available options can vary with Windows version and device configuration. These are Windows settings, not necessarily Legion Space controls. For Microsoft’s current battery-saving options, see Microsoft’s battery-saving guidance.
SteamOS
For idle screen dimming in desktop mode, open System Settings > Power Management > Energy Saving. Adjust screen dimming separately for On Battery and On Low Battery. Lenovo lists a one-minute dimming timeout as the default for both scenarios in its SteamOS guide; change it if the screen dims too quickly while you are using the device.

What runtime should you expect?
Lenovo’s May 6, 2026 PSREF lists a 55.5 Wh rechargeable Li-ion battery and a maximum claim of 14.5 hours for local 1080p video playback at 150 nits. That video benchmark is not an estimate of gaming time. Lenovo says actual battery life varies with configuration, software use, wireless functionality, power-management settings, screen brightness, and battery aging. Lenovo’s Legion Go S specifications state: “Actual battery life will vary depending on many factors such as product configuration and usage, software use, wireless functionality, power management settings, and screen brightness.”
As one review-specific example, TechRadar reported about 2 hours 30 minutes of gaming on Balanced settings and about 8 hours 30 minutes in desktop use during its 2025 SteamOS testing. Those are results from that reviewer’s unit and test conditions, not a promise for every Legion Go S; game, brightness, settings, and usage affect the result. Read TechRadar’s Legion Go S review.

When you need power away from an outlet
If settings alone are not enough, a compatible USB-C PD power bank can provide charging access away from a wall outlet. The reviewed specifications do not establish a minimum power-bank rating or how much extra runtime one will provide, so check its USB-C Power Delivery output and cable compatibility before relying on it. Lenovo lists a 65 W USB-C PD 3.0 AC-adapter option, but that is an adapter specification—not a claim about power-bank requirements or gaming runtime. Adapter offerings vary by country.
