To make a gaming handheld last longer, reduce the work it does: cap frame rate, choose a lower power mode, and dim or slow the display where your model allows it. Make one change at a time and compare the same game and scene, since the gain depends on the device and workload. For sessions away from an outlet, a compatible USB-C power bank can add capacity.
Start with a fair battery-life comparison
Before changing settings, note your current battery estimate or performance overlay reading, if available. Then test the same game in the same scene after each adjustment, keeping brightness and network conditions consistent. This will not produce a laboratory measurement, but it helps show which changes matter on your own setup.

Battery use varies with the handheld, game workload, display settings, performance settings, and other conditions. Official guidance supports the direction of the changes below, but does not quantify a universal number of minutes saved by each one.

Cap the frame rate to what the game needs
A game may not need to run at the handheld’s maximum frame rate. Try a lower cap that still feels smooth and responsive for that particular game; fast-paced games may benefit more from higher frame rates than slower titles.

ASUS lists 30, 45, 60, 90, or Max as FPS limiter choices for the ROG Ally series. Its support FAQ says the limiter can support battery savings or a more consistent experience in some games when set to 30 FPS. The feature supports exclusive full-screen mode and must be enabled before launching the game. See the ROG Ally Series FAQ for the supported controls and conditions.
Steam Deck controls and labels can change with SteamOS updates, so check your current software’s performance settings rather than relying on a menu path that may no longer match your version. There is no single best frame-rate cap for every game or player.

Choose a lower power mode when performance allows
Power modes can lower the system’s performance ceiling or power target. That can help reduce consumption, but a demanding game may become less smooth if the mode cannot sustain the performance it needs.
- ROG Ally: ASUS advises switching from Turbo to Performance or Silent to extend battery life. Choose the lowest mode that runs your game acceptably. See ASUS’s ROG Ally battery guidance.
- Lenovo Legion Go: Lenovo describes Quiet mode as a power-saving option and Best power efficiency as the Windows power mode for conserving power on battery. Mode availability and names vary by model generation; consult the guide for your device: Legion Go (8.8-inch, Gen 2) User Guide or original Legion Go User Guide.
Reduce display power without sacrificing visibility
Lower brightness to the dimmest comfortable level for your surroundings. If your handheld offers a refresh-rate setting, lowering it can also reduce display demands, though the trade-off is less-smooth motion.

Valve says the Steam Deck LCD display is capped at 60 Hz and the OLED display at 90 Hz. Settings above the relevant model’s cap do not improve performance and may drain charge faster. Valve also documents how to lower refresh rate in the Steam Deck Basic Use & Troubleshooting Guide. Lenovo describes 60 Hz as an energy-efficient option on supported Legion Go models, while higher refresh rates can look smoother; check the manual for your generation.
Use a power bank for longer sessions away from an outlet
If you need more play time away from a wall outlet, an external USB-C power bank is an option. ASUS recommends a bank capable of at least 65 W USB-PD for extended portable play with the ROG Ally family. That is ASUS guidance for those devices, not a universal requirement for other handhelds. Check your specific model’s charging requirements, the bank’s output profile, cable rating, and port behavior before buying. Capacity, measured in watt-hours, also affects how much energy the bank can supply; no fixed number of added play hours applies across devices and games.

Valve confirms that Steam Deck uses USB Power Delivery. Its support guide covers charging and basic-use details. ASUS’s recommendations for its handhelds are in its battery-life guidance.

Valve describes approximately 7–8 hours as a maximum for lighter Steam Deck activities such as streaming, smaller 2D games, or browsing. That figure is not a typical runtime for demanding games. See Steam Deck Hardware for Valve’s stated scope.

Do not open or modify a Steam Deck as a routine battery-life fix. Valve says it does not recommend doing so and warns that resulting damage may not be covered by warranty; see its Basic Use & Troubleshooting Guide.
