To improve quickly in EA SPORTS FC 26, stop treating every possession and chance the same. Use the pass that matches your teammate’s movement, choose a shot that fits the goalkeeper and available space, and defend by controlling distance before attempting a tackle. Then repeat one skill at a time in Training Center, Skill Games, Practice Arena and Kick-Off.
This guide uses EA’s FC 26 terminology and official guidance current to October 2026. Menus, controls and gameplay can change by platform, control configuration, gameplay preset and title update, so confirm your inputs through Button Help or Settings > Basic Controls in your own game.

Set up FC 26 for the kind of match you want to play
FC 26 offers two broad gameplay presets. Neither is universally “best”; the useful choice depends on your mode and the feel you want.
| Preset | EA’s intended emphasis | Good starting point when… |
|---|---|---|
| Competitive | Tuned for head-to-head modes such as Ultimate Team and Clubs, with faster passing and more direct control. | You mainly play online head-to-head matches and want the control model used for those modes. |
| Authentic | A more true-to-football feel for modes such as Career, including more positionally responsible defenders and other simulation-oriented behavior. | You play Career or prefer a match that rewards realistic shape and tempo. |
EA describes these presets and the wider FC 26 gameplay changes on its FC 26 gameplay features page. Treat the descriptions as the design target, not a promise that one preset will make a beginner win more often. Pick the preset that matches your main mode, keep it while you practise, and change it only when you have a specific reason.

Verify every control before practising
Button labels vary with PlayStation, Xbox, PC, controller layout and custom mappings. A control printed in a general guide can therefore be wrong for your setup. Open Settings > Basic Controls, or pause a match and choose Button Help, then identify the entries for pass, through pass, lobbed through pass, driven pass, shoot, finesse, chip, power and jockey. EA’s shooting guide explains the same navigation and control caveat at How to shoot in EA SPORTS FC, while the passing guide does so at How to pass in EA SPORTS FC.
Do not change several assistance options at once. Make one adjustment, play several repeatable situations, and note whether it helps you keep the intended direction and power. This makes it possible to tell a genuine improvement from a lucky bounce.
How to choose the right pass
The key passing question is not “Which button is strongest?” It is “Where is the teammate going, and what space is available?” EA puts the principle plainly: “Choosing your pass based on your teammate’s movement and the space around them can help you keep possession and create chances.”
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| Pass type | Use it when… | Main risk to check first |
|---|---|---|
| Ground pass | A nearby teammate has a clear lane and you want a reliable, short connection. | A defender is positioned between passer and receiver; a seemingly short lane can still be blocked. |
| Through pass | A teammate is running into open space rather than standing at your feet. | Releasing too late sends the ball behind the runner or into the defender’s path. |
| Lobbed through pass | You need to play over a defender who blocks the ground route. | Too much height or power gives the goalkeeper or covering defender time to recover. |
| Driven ground pass | You need faster delivery through midfield or over a longer distance and the receiver has room to control it. | The ball arrives faster, so a receiver under pressure may lose control. |
Read movement before selecting the pass
- Scan the receiver’s movement. A player moving toward you usually suits a ground pass; a player moving away into an unoccupied channel suggests a through pass.
- Trace the lane. Look from the ball to the receiver, not just at the receiver’s name. A defender’s body or a second player closing the lane can turn a safe-looking pass into a turnover.
- Choose the least ambitious pass that advances the move. Keeping possession with a short pass is often more useful than forcing a spectacular ball through two defenders.
- Set power for distance. A nearby teammate needs less power than a far-side outlet. Overpowered short passes can run out of play or force a poor first touch.
- Allow room for a driven delivery. Because a driven pass arrives quickly, aim into space the receiver can reach rather than directly at a player who is tightly marked.
When a through pass fails
First check timing, not just accuracy. A through pass released after the runner has reached the defensive line may travel into an offside or blocked position. If the runner is still moving but the lane is narrow, a normal ground pass can let you keep the ball and wait for a second movement. If a defender is squarely in front of the runner, a lobbed through pass is the purposeful alternative; it is not a substitute for checking whether the goalkeeper can collect it.
Passing practice that transfers to matches
In Practice Arena or Training Center, work on one pass type at a time. Repeat the same action at short, medium and longer distances, then vary the receiver’s movement. For each attempt, say the decision out loud—“nearby and clear,” “run into space,” “defender blocking the ground lane,” or “fast delivery with room.” This builds a visual trigger instead of a memorized button press.

EA recommends its passing lessons, Skill Games, Kick-Off and Practice Arena for repetition. The official passing guide is available at EA Help. Move to a match-like Kick-Off only after you can make the same choice while defenders are moving; otherwise you are practising emergency guesses rather than the skill itself.
How to score more goals
Good finishing starts before the shot input. Create a body position that faces the intended part of the goal, check how much time the goalkeeper has, and then select the shot type that fits the chance.
| Shot | Best situation | What to remember |
|---|---|---|
| Regular shot | A straightforward chance with a clear view of goal. | Use less power when close and more from farther away. |
| Finesse shot | You need the ball to curl toward a chosen target. | It still needs a clear route; curl cannot remove a defender directly in the way. |
| Chip shot | The goalkeeper has moved away from the goal line and left space over or beyond the keeper. | It is a poor choice when the keeper is set on the line or the finish requires a low ball. |
| Power shot | You have enough room for its longer wind-up and the situation rewards extra force. | Do not begin the wind-up while a defender can close you down immediately. |
| Low Driven shot | You want to keep the ball low, especially close to goal or in a one-on-one. | In FC 26, EA says the Low Driven input can be added to most shot types by pressing the shot input again after setting power; it cannot be added to a Chip Shot. Confirm the current input in Button Help. |
| Volley or header | The ball is airborne and your player’s position, height and movement make contact possible. | Prioritise getting underneath the ball and aiming before adding power. |
A repeatable finishing sequence
- Set the angle. Take a touch that opens the part of the goal you want to attack instead of shooting while your player is facing away from it.
- Pick a target. Aim at a specific side or height. Vague aiming makes it difficult to diagnose a miss.
- Match power to distance. EA’s guidance is simple: use less power close to goal and more from farther out. A full-power attempt from close range is often harder to control.
- Check the goalkeeper. A keeper leaving the line can create a chip opportunity; a set keeper and a crowded lane call for a different finish.
- Respect the wind-up. Power shots need time. If a defender is arriving, a regular or low finish may be more practical.
- Review the outcome. Note whether the miss was caused by aim, power, a blocked lane or the wrong shot type. Change one variable on the next attempt.
Use Low Driven without guessing
FC 26’s Low Driven option is a modifier rather than a universal replacement for every finish. EA states that you can add it to most shot types by pressing the shot input again after setting power, but not to a Chip Shot. Because the precise buttons depend on platform and configuration, check the live control prompt before practising. Start with close one-on-ones, where keeping the ball low has an obvious purpose, then test the same modifier from wider angles.
Airborne chances
When a cross or deflection lifts the ball, decide whether your player can attack it with a volley or header based on height, position and movement. Do not force a ground-shot routine onto an airborne ball. If the player is off balance or arriving late, resetting the attack can be safer than attempting a low-percentage finish.
Shooting drills
Use Training Center or Skill Games to practise one shot family at a time: regular finishes from several angles, then Finesse, then chips with the goalkeeper off the line, followed by Low Driven attempts. EA also recommends Kick-Off and Practice Arena for applying the technique in match-like situations. The official shooting guidance, including the practice options and shot descriptions, is at EA Help: How to shoot in EA SPORTS FC.

Observe how the player’s attributes and PlayStyles affect the result. A miss does not automatically mean your aim was wrong; the player, body position and incoming ball all matter. Compare attempts with the same angle and power before drawing a conclusion.

Defending in FC 26 is partly a positioning skill and partly a settings choice. Your first objective is to stay close enough to influence the attacker without dragging your defender out of shape. Tackle only when the ball is exposed or the attacker’s next route is predictable.
Choose a jockey setting you can control
EA’s FC 26 accessibility documentation describes two Jockey options:
- Assisted Jockey automatically adjusts your player’s speed to stay close to an opponent.
- Manual Jockey gives you full control over the player’s positioning.
Assisted can help a new player learn the feel of maintaining distance, while Manual offers finer control once you can regulate speed yourself. Neither setting guarantees a successful stop. Test each in the same one-on-one situation and keep the option that lets you face the attacker without over-running the play. Review the descriptions in EA SPORTS FC 26 Accessibility Resources.
Understand defending assistance modes
FC 26 also offers Advanced, Tactical and Legacy defending. EA says the mode affects how tackle types are selected, and notes that Legacy is unavailable in the Competitive preset. Treat these as control-behaviour choices, not difficulty levels. Read the in-game explanation, select one mode, and practise its tackle behaviour before changing it.

Pass Block Assistance controls whether AI-controlled and user-controlled players attempt automatic interceptions. More automation can produce an occasional interception but can also move a player away from the space you intended to protect. Test the setting with a repeatable passing drill and watch whether your defender follows the lane you are guarding.
Three defensive habits
- Protect the dangerous space first. If the ball carrier is wide, the central channel and the passing lane to a nearby runner usually matter more than chasing the ball toward the sideline.
- Match the attacker’s speed. Sprinting straight at the ball can let the attacker turn around you. Use jockey movement to stay square, then close when the ball moves away from the attacker’s feet.
- Delay before tackling. A mistimed tackle removes your defender from the play. Wait for a heavy touch, a predictable direction or a receiver who has no room to turn.
These are decision principles rather than guaranteed tactics. Player ratings, formation, preset and title updates can change how an encounter feels. EA’s FC PRO Masterclasses list Block, Anticipate and Jockey as defending lesson topics at FC PRO Masterclasses; use those lessons to deepen the basic habits without assuming a particular PlayStyle is mandatory for beginners.
Defensive practice sequence
- Start with a one-on-one and practise staying between attacker and goal without tackling.
- Repeat while the attacker changes direction. Focus on keeping your defender facing the threat.
- Add a passing option and protect the lane to the receiver before closing the ball carrier.
- Practise one tackle type under controlled conditions, then review whether the tackle was early, late or unnecessary.
- Move to Kick-Off and repeat the same defensive objective against moving teammates and opponents.
A practice routine that turns tips into decisions
Short, focused repetitions are more useful than changing tactics after every mistake. Use the following cycle and repeat each stage until the decision feels deliberate.
- Controls check: Open Button Help or Settings > Basic Controls and identify the inputs you will use. Confirm any custom mapping.
- Passing block: In Training Center or Practice Arena, alternate ground, through, lobbed through and driven ground passes. Change the receiver’s movement and distance so you must read the situation.
- Finishing block: Practise regular shots first, then add one specialist type. Aim at a named target and vary distance rather than mashing the same input.
- Defending block: Use Assisted and Manual Jockey in separate sessions, keeping the same scenario so you can compare positioning control.
- Transfer block: Play Kick-Off and set one objective, such as “do not force a through pass into a marked lane” or “delay before tackling.”
- Review block: After the match, identify one repeated error. Change one setting or decision rule, then test it again. Do not overhaul controls, preset and formation simultaneously.
EA’s official training recommendations include Training Center lessons, Skill Games, Kick-Off and Practice Arena. The goal is not to accumulate drills; it is to connect a visual cue—movement, space, goalkeeper position or defensive distance—to one reliable choice.

Fix common beginner problems
“My passes keep going to the wrong player.”
Check the passing-assistance setting and your directional input, then look at the lane rather than the receiver’s name alone. If two teammates occupy similar directions, reduce ambition: use a short ground pass to the clearly available player instead of forcing a through ball.

“My through passes are intercepted.”
You may be releasing after the defender has closed the lane, or aiming at the runner instead of the space ahead of the runner. Try an earlier pass, a normal ground pass to retain possession, or a lobbed through pass when the defender genuinely blocks the ground route.
“Every shot is saved.”
Separate aim, power and shot selection. Practise regular shots with less power from close range, then test Finesse when you have a clear curling route. Use a chip only when the goalkeeper has left the line, and reserve a Power shot for a situation that allows its longer wind-up.
“I concede after chasing the ball.”
Stay between the attacker and the dangerous space, match speed with jockey movement and delay the tackle. If Assisted Jockey causes unwanted movement, compare it with Manual in an identical practice scenario. Also check whether Pass Block Assistance is pulling your defender out of the lane you intended to protect.
“The same move worked yesterday but not now.”
FC 26 gameplay is update-sensitive. EA publishes design and update context through its Gameplay Deep Dive and October Feedback Update. Recheck the current patch notes and in-game settings before treating a changed outcome as a control mistake.
Use this match checklist
- Have I confirmed my actual controls and any custom configuration?
- Is the receiver coming toward the ball, running into space or screened by a defender?
- Would a ground, through, lobbed through or driven pass fit that movement and lane?
- Have I adjusted pass power to the distance and the receiver’s available control space?
- Where is the goalkeeper, and is the chance better suited to a regular, Finesse, chip, Power or Low Driven shot?
- Am I aiming at a specific part of goal rather than relying on maximum power?
- While defending, am I protecting the dangerous space before chasing the ball?
- Can I delay the tackle until the attacker takes a heavy touch?
- Am I changing one setting or decision at a time so I can tell what helped?
Improvement comes from making the same observation and response repeatedly: movement and space determine the pass, the chance determines the shot, and distance and timing determine the defensive action. Keep those decisions consistent while you practise, then adapt only when the mode, preset or a title update changes the conditions.
