How to Improve Apple Watch Battery Life Without Losing Important Features

The best way to extend Apple Watch battery life is to change the least important power-hungry feature first. Start by switching off Always On or limiting what appears when your wrist is down, then disable Background App Refresh only for apps that do not need timely updates. Reserve Low Power Mode for days when you need extra endurance, because it also changes health measurements, notifications and connectivity. For a long outdoor workout, the separate reduced GPS and heart-rate readings option can save power, but it removes several live workout details.

Apple does not publish a setting-by-setting runtime increase for these controls. Treat them as trade-offs: preserve the features that matter to you, remove the ones you rarely use, and verify the result over your normal day.

Choose the smallest change that solves your problem

“Important features” differ by person. Someone who relies on heart-rate notifications should not use the same configuration as someone who mainly needs a visible clock during a long hike. The table below shows what each adjustment changes before you enable it.

Adjustment What you keep What changes Best fit
Turn off Always On Raise-to-wake and tap-to-wake viewing, notifications and complications when you actively look at the watch The face is no longer continuously visible while your wrist is down Everyday wear when instant glances are less important than runtime
Customize the wrist-down display Always On remains available with a tailored view You can limit wrist-down notifications, apps, Live Activities or complication data Users who want a visible face but less background activity or less information on screen
Disable Background App Refresh for selected apps Refresh for apps you leave enabled Selected apps refresh less often in the background; complications on the current face may still refresh Reducing background work without giving up every app update
Enable Low Power Mode Core watch use and, in the Workout app, heart rate and pace readings Always On, background heart-rate and blood-oxygen measurements, heart-rate notifications, some connections and prompt delivery of other notifications can be affected Travel, long days or any period when you can accept broad feature reductions
Use Fewer GPS and Heart Rate Readings during eligible workouts A lower-power workout record with basic measurements Reduced sampling removes alerts, splits, segments and current pace Long outdoor workouts where battery duration matters more than live detail

Start with Always On and the wrist-down display

Always On keeps the watch face visible at a glance. That convenience requires the display to remain in a low-refresh state instead of turning fully off. If you usually raise your wrist or tap the screen anyway, disabling Always On is the most focused first step: it targets display power without changing your health sensors, workout recording or ordinary notifications.

  • [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.

Turn Always On off

  1. On the watch, open Settings.
  2. Tap Display & Brightness, then Always On.
  3. Turn Always On off.

The face will wake when you raise your wrist or interact with the screen. Your apps, complications, workouts and notifications remain available when you actively view them. Apple does not provide a universal percentage for the battery improvement, because actual consumption depends on the face, brightness, activity and watch model.

Keep Always On, but reduce what appears

If continuous visibility is important, Apple lets you choose what appears while your wrist is down. In Settings > Display & Brightness > Always On, review the options for wrist-down notifications, apps, Live Activities and complication data. Leaving the clock visible while suppressing information you do not need can preserve the glanceable face with less background content.

Use this approach when you need a meeting timer, transit status or another specific glance, but do not need every notification or live update displayed before you look directly at the watch. It is a narrower compromise than Low Power Mode because it does not deliberately disable health measurements or alter all notifications.

Disable Background App Refresh selectively

Background App Refresh lets apps update information when you are not actively using them. Turning it off globally can save background work, but it may also make less frequently opened apps slower to show current data. A per-app approach keeps timely information for the apps you actually depend on.

Review the global setting

  1. Open Settings on the Apple Watch.
  2. Tap General, then Background App Refresh.
  3. Turn the main Background App Refresh switch off to stop this category of refresh, or leave it on and adjust individual apps below it.

Disable refresh for apps that you rarely open, do not use for time-sensitive information, or do not place on your normal watch face. Keep it enabled for apps whose current information genuinely matters between launches.

Understand the complication exception

Apple notes that apps with complications on the current watch face may still refresh even when Background App Refresh is turned off. Therefore, disabling the setting is not a guarantee that all complication data stops updating. If one complication remains active, either accept that targeted refresh or remove the complication from the face you use most.

Do not remove every complication simply to chase an unspecified gain. A complication that replaces repeated app launches can be useful, and the setting’s effect varies with how often an app requests data. Make one change, use the watch normally, and then decide whether another app needs to be restricted.

Use Low Power Mode as a deliberate, temporary trade-off

Low Power Mode is broader than a display or app-refresh adjustment. Apple says it can turn off Always On, background heart-rate and blood-oxygen measurements, and heart-rate notifications. Other notifications may arrive later, and some connections can be limited. Those effects can be worthwhile when the alternative is an empty battery, but they are not a free extension of runtime.

Turn it on for a chosen period

  1. Open Settings on the watch.
  2. Tap Battery, then Low Power Mode.
  3. Review the feature warnings and turn it on.
  4. When the watch offers a duration, choose the period that matches your need rather than leaving the mode on indefinitely.

The exact choices shown can depend on watchOS. If your model presents a duration selector, use it for a flight, work shift, overnight period or travel day, then let normal operation resume afterward.

Know what health data you give up

With Low Power Mode active, background heart-rate and blood-oxygen measurements can be suspended, and heart-rate notifications can be disabled. That matters if you use the watch for passive trend collection or depend on an alert when your heart rate crosses a threshold. Workout measurements are a separate case: Apple documents that the Workout app can continue to retain core measures such as heart rate and pace in Low Power Mode.

Do not interpret a quiet period in background measurements as an improvement in your health. It is a power-saving behavior. If continuous measurements or heart-rate alerts are important on a particular day, use a narrower change instead of Low Power Mode.

Account for notification and connection changes

Low Power Mode can delay some notifications and limit certain connections. Time-sensitive messages, remote data requests or accessories that depend on a persistent connection may not behave exactly as they do in normal mode. Before enabling it for an event, decide whether receiving information immediately is more important than extending the watch’s operating time.

Extend a long outdoor workout without sacrificing the whole watch

Outdoor workouts combine GPS, heart-rate sensing and a bright, frequently updated display, so they can consume power faster than quiet desk wear. Apple provides two different levels of conservation: Low Power Mode can preserve core Workout app measures, while Fewer GPS and Heart Rate Readings reduces the frequency of location and heart-rate sampling even further.

Check eligibility before relying on reduced readings

Apple documents Fewer GPS and Heart Rate Readings for watchOS 9.1 or later on Apple Watch Series 8 and later, Apple Watch SE (2nd generation) and later, and Apple Watch Ultra and later. Confirm both the model and installed watchOS before planning a long event around it; the option is not universal across older hardware.

Enable the lower-sampling workout option

  1. On the watch, open Settings.
  2. Tap Workout.
  3. Find the setting for Fewer GPS and Heart Rate Readings and turn it on if your model and software support it.
  4. Start the outdoor workout normally in the Workout app.

Menu wording and placement can change with watchOS. If the setting is absent, do not assume a fault: first verify the model and software requirements, then check Apple’s current instructions for that exact watch.

Accept the workout details that disappear

Reduced GPS and heart-rate sampling is not merely a quieter version of the same workout. Apple says it removes alerts, splits, segments and current pace information. You may still obtain a lower-power record, but you cannot rely on those live details for interval pacing, race splits or segment feedback.

Choose it for a long hike, all-day event or endurance session where recording the activity matters more than immediate coaching. Leave it off for interval training, races or any workout in which alerts and current pace guide your effort. Low Power Mode without reduced readings is the better middle ground when you need the ordinary workout details and can accept the broader non-workout trade-offs.

Match the setting to the day

A practical configuration changes with your priorities. Use this decision guide instead of leaving the most restrictive mode enabled all the time.

Situation First adjustment Escalate to Feature to protect
Normal workday with occasional glances Turn off Always On or limit wrist-down content Selected Background App Refresh restrictions Notifications and health measurements
Travel day with limited charging access Disable refresh for nonessential apps Low Power Mode for the travel period Only the notifications and connections you need immediately
Long outdoor workout on an eligible watch Low Power Mode while retaining ordinary Workout measures Fewer GPS and Heart Rate Readings Choose between live workout detail and maximum endurance
Day when heart-rate alerts or passive measurements matter Display and app-refresh changes only Avoid Low Power Mode during the measurement period Background heart-rate data and notifications

Why your Apple Watch may be draining faster than usual

A recent watchOS update can temporarily increase activity

Apple says tasks related to a watchOS update may continue in the background and affect battery life. A sudden decline immediately after updating therefore does not prove that the battery or a particular setting has failed. Let the post-update work complete while the watch is connected to its normal charging routine, then reassess usage.

Apple does not specify a universal waiting period in the guidance covered here, so do not rely on a fixed number of hours or days. If the drain remains unusual after background work has settled, continue with the checks below.

Look for a feature mismatch rather than a single culprit

  • Check whether Always On was enabled again after a settings change.
  • Review Background App Refresh and identify apps that do not need current data.
  • Check whether Low Power Mode is active and whether its health or notification limits are acceptable.
  • Review recent outdoor workouts, especially those using frequent GPS and heart-rate readings.
  • Confirm that a supported model is running the expected watchOS version before troubleshooting a missing reduced-readings option.

Change one category at a time. If you turn off Always On, restrict several apps and enable Low Power Mode simultaneously, you will not know which change affected your normal use or which feature caused an unwanted side effect.

A repeatable troubleshooting workflow

  1. Define the feature you cannot lose. Write down whether it is a visible face, immediate notifications, background heart-rate data, blood-oxygen measurements, a heart-rate alert, or detailed workout metrics.
  2. Apply one narrow change. Start with Always On or a small Background App Refresh list instead of Low Power Mode.
  3. Use the watch through a representative day. Include the activities that normally expose the drain, such as commuting, sleep tracking or an outdoor workout.
  4. Check for unwanted consequences. Confirm that required complications update, notifications arrive when expected and the health or workout data you rely on is still present.
  5. Escalate only when necessary. Use Low Power Mode for a defined period, or add reduced GPS and heart-rate readings for an eligible endurance workout.
  6. Restore normal settings after the exceptional period. Low Power Mode and reduced workout sampling are situational tools; keeping them enabled permanently may remove information you consider important.

What these changes cannot tell you

None of the settings above provides a model-independent promise of a specific number of extra hours. Apple’s guidance explains which functions are reduced, but it does not quantify the runtime gained by each individual control. Face design, screen brightness, workout duration, cellular or other connections, notification volume, sensor use and watch model all affect the result.

A charger, charging dock or portable battery can replenish the watch when it is empty, but it does not increase the time the watch runs while worn. The configuration steps are the relevant solution when your goal is longer intervals between charges.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep an evidence-based configuration

After testing, write down the settings that match your routine. A common balanced setup is Always On off, Background App Refresh enabled only for apps whose information matters, and Low Power Mode reserved for unusually long days. For an eligible long outdoor workout, decide in advance whether live pace, alerts, splits and segments are essential; if they are, keep ordinary readings and accept the shorter runtime, and if they are not, use Fewer GPS and Heart Rate Readings.

Recheck the configuration after a watchOS update because Apple can change feature availability and background behavior. Verify the exact model and software whenever a setting appears or disappears, and treat temporary post-update drain as a possible background-task effect rather than immediately disabling every important feature.
