How to Improve a Ring Doorbell’s Wi-Fi Signal and Stop Disconnects

Start with the Ring app’s Device Health → Signal Strength reading, then improve the router-to-doorbell path before buying equipment. A weak RSSI points to a Wi-Fi coverage problem; repeated disconnects can also come from power, internet, or router issues, so check those separately.

Check the doorbell’s signal in the Ring app

  1. Open the Ring app dashboard and tap Devices.
  2. Select your doorbell, then open Device Settings → Device Health → Signal Strength.

Ring uses RSSI (received signal strength indicator) as a guide to the doorbell’s Wi-Fi connection. Its current support scale is:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

RSSI reading Ring’s assessment What it may mean
0 to -60 Great Strong performance is expected.
-60 to -70 Okay There may be room to improve the connection.
-70 to -80 Poor Delays or interruptions may occur.
-80 or lower Very poor Service may be intermittent or the device may lose connection.

These are Ring’s diagnostic ranges, not guarantees of a particular experience. RSSI describes signal strength; it does not by itself show whether your internet provider is having a problem. Ring’s current Wi-Fi recommendations also state that a Ring doorbell needs 2 Mbps of internet speed. That is a separate measure from RSSI and from the device’s transmit-speed reading.

Improve router placement before adding equipment

Distance and obstacles both affect the wireless path. Ring identifies brick, stucco or metal walls, large appliances, electronics and mirrors as factors that can reduce signal. If practical, move the router to an open, elevated spot rather than leaving it on the floor or behind furniture.

  • Keep it out of cupboards and away from sofas, large appliances and other bulky obstructions.
  • Reduce the number of dense walls or other barriers between the router and the doorbell where you can.
  • After moving the router, check the Signal Strength reading again in Device Health.

Ring advises moving a device closer to the router to improve Wi-Fi strength and specifically cautions against blocking the router behind a sofa or in a cupboard. See Ring’s signal guidance and Ring’s router placement guidance.

Choose an extender or mesh network for the size of the problem

If the doorbell’s location remains a weak spot after placement changes, an extender may help only if it can itself receive a usable signal from the main router. Put it between the router and doorbell, not at the far end of a dead zone. Ring names Chime Pro and eero mesh as options, but neither can fix a weak broadband connection or unrelated power problem.

Option Best fit Placement and trade-off
Ring Chime Pro A localized weak area where Ring-specific integration is useful. Choose a position that gets a good signal from the router and can reach the doorbell. Use the Ring app’s placement test to assess connected-device signal and adjust the outlet location.
Generic Wi-Fi extender One localized weak area, if the extender can connect reliably to the router. Position it between the router and doorbell where it still receives a usable router signal. No particular third-party model is established as a universal choice.
Mesh Wi-Fi system Weak coverage across multiple rooms or areas, rather than only at the doorbell. Designed to extend coverage across the home; Ring points to eero mesh. It requires addressing home-wide coverage, not just one device’s signal.

Ring’s guidance on Wi-Fi recommendations, its Chime Pro placement test and eero mesh supports these options. Check current product and device compatibility before purchasing.

Check Wi-Fi band compatibility before changing router settings

Ring doorbells do not all support the same Wi-Fi bands. Some models use only 2.4 GHz; others support both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, and supported 5 GHz channels can vary by model and region. Look up the exact doorbell model and applicable regional guidance before selecting a band or changing channels. Ring’s doorbell setup guidance covers Wi-Fi setup considerations.

When disconnects continue, check power and network health

If signal strength looks acceptable or the device still goes offline after placement changes, use the app’s Device Health details and follow any error-specific instructions. Check other causes in a controlled order:

  1. Power: For a battery model, check charge. For a hardwired model, confirm the supply is correct for that device.
  2. Internet and upload performance: Check your internet service and test speed near the relevant location. Ring distinguishes the internet connection from Transmit Speed, which it defines as the speed between the Ring device and local network while uploading data. Ring rates transmit speed above 20 Mbps as GOOD, 10–20 Mbps as OKAY, and below 10 Mbps as POOR; these are Ring’s device-to-local-network categories, not your internet-plan speed. See Ring’s Wi-Fi and transmit-speed guidance.
  3. Modem, router and cabling: Restart the modem and router, inspect their cables, and check that router software is current.
  4. Router setup: Ring warns that multiple routers can cause setup problems. If you have more than one, ask your internet provider or router manufacturer whether one should be placed in bridge mode.
  5. App network settings: If appropriate, reconnect the doorbell or change its Wi-Fi network through the Ring app, following its on-screen instructions.

Use a factory reset only after the simpler checks: it means setting the doorbell up again. Ring’s guidance on devices that will not connect to Wi-Fi provides troubleshooting context.
