Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFirst determine whether the photo is merely dark and noisy or genuinely blurred. Exposure, shadow and noise adjustments can reveal detail your camera recorded, but they cannot restore focus that was missed or reconstruct an aurora that moved during a long exposure. Work from the highest-quality original, inspect it at 100%, correct tone and noise in that order, and sharpen only meaningful edges. If stars have trails, doubled edges or soft disks, a new capture with better focus, steadier support or a shorter exposure is the dependable fix.
Diagnose the problem before moving a slider
Northern-lights images often contain more than one defect. A dark frame may look blurry because noise obscures fine detail; a genuinely soft frame may become more obvious after you brighten it. Examine the file at 100% (also called 1:1) and then at the size at which you plan to share it.

Dark but reasonably sharp
Stars, trees and ridgelines should have defined edges even if they are difficult to see. This is an exposure and noise problem. Raising exposure or shadows can reveal some recorded information, although very dark areas may become visibly noisy.

Shake usually produces directional streaks or a duplicated edge across stars and foreground objects. It is common when the camera is not on a sturdy tripod or when the shutter is pressed by hand. Software can increase edge contrast, but it cannot turn a streak into a point.

Missed focus
Defocused stars appear as enlarged, soft circles rather than points. If the landscape and stars are both soft in the same way, focus is a likely cause. Sharpening may make the boundary look harder, but it does not restore the detail that was never recorded.
Aurora motion during the exposure
The aurora itself can move while the shutter is open. The Canadian Space Agency summarizes the trade-off this way: “Longer exposures will produce brighter images; however, if the aurora is moving quickly, the image will be fuzzy.” A bright, fast display can therefore be blurry even when the tripod and focus were correct.
Noise is not the same as blur
Luminance noise resembles monochrome grain or uneven brightness. Color noise appears as red, green, blue or purple flecks. Noise reduction can make a dark frame cleaner, but excessive reduction smears stars and fine foreground texture. Treat the two types separately rather than trying to solve both with sharpening.

Aliasing is a separate artifact
Jagged or repeating patterns can indicate aliasing, not missed focus, camera shake or aurora motion. Do not use a blur or sharpening workflow as though it were an aliasing correction; diagnose the visible artifact first.
Preserve the best original
Make a virtual copy or duplicate before editing so you can compare every change with the untouched file. If a RAW file exists, use it. Nikon recommends RAW because it retains more editing flexibility than a rendered JPEG. A JPEG or phone image is still worth editing; it simply gives you less latitude and can show compression artifacts sooner. Keep the original and export a separate finished copy.

A controlled editing workflow
-
Inspect stars and point details
Zoom to 100% and look at stars, distant lights and high-contrast edges. Trails suggest movement or shake; evenly soft points suggest focus; crisp but barely visible points suggest underexposure. Check several areas because a foreground edge can be sharp while the sky is motion-blurred.
-
Set a restrained overall exposure
Raise exposure only until useful scene detail appears. Then adjust shadows if the foreground is blocked up. Brightening does not guarantee detail in a pixel that recorded almost no signal; it mainly makes the captured signal and its noise more visible.

Please review EULA and Privacy policy.Use the RGB histogram rather than the camera or editing application’s preview alone. Canon warns that a dim LCD can make an underexposed frame look acceptable and recommends the RGB histogram to reveal clipping in individual color channels. Watch the aurora’s brightest greens, reds and purples: a channel can clip even when the combined image does not look completely white.
-
Protect aurora highlights
If the brightest aurora areas are pressed against the right side of the histogram, reduce highlights or overall exposure before lifting more shadows. Nikon describes slight underexposure as a way to protect highlights in bright displays. Recovering a little tonal separation is useful; a clipped channel contains no color detail for software to recover.
-
Balance white balance and contrast
Set a neutral starting white balance, then adjust it to match the scene you remember or the mood you want. A cooler value can emphasize blue-green light, while a warmer value can keep snow or foreground illumination from looking icy, but neither choice restores lost focus. Add contrast carefully after exposure is stable. Nikon’s documented sequence includes contrast, white balance, highlight recovery and restrained clarity or dehaze; use those controls gently because aggressive local contrast can exaggerate sky noise and halos.

Reduce luminance and color noise separately
At 100% or 1:1, increase luminance reduction until grain is less distracting, then stop before stars and terrain become waxy. Apply color-noise reduction to colored flecks, watching for color bleeding or mottled patches. Adobe’s Lightroom Classic documentation emphasizes evaluating these controls at 1:1 because a setting that looks smooth in a fit-to-screen preview can erase fine detail when inspected closely.

Compare the edited copy with the original at both 100% and fit-to-screen view.
-
Sharpen only after noise and tone are settled
Sharpening increases contrast along an existing edge. It can make a crisp tree line or a correctly focused star appear clearer, but it cannot reverse motion blur or defocus. Use a modest amount and a small radius. Excessive amount or radius creates bright halos, dark outlines and an artificial-looking sky.
Use masking, a local mask or an equivalent selective tool so sharpening is concentrated on foreground edges and other meaningful detail rather than broad areas of sky. Adobe describes masking as limiting sharpening mainly to strong edges, and the Aurora Handbook advises avoiding the sky when sharpening. If your editor has no local mask, reduce global sharpening until the sky remains natural.
-
Compare and export safely
Toggle the virtual copy against the original at fit-to-screen size, then inspect both at 100%. The finished image should look natural at its intended viewing size, not merely impressive when enlarged. Export a new JPEG or other delivery file and retain the RAW or original JPEG separately.

What editing can and cannot recover
| Visible symptom | Likely cause | Useful edit | Hard limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Uniformly dark image, edges still defined | Underexposure | Moderate exposure and shadow lift; adjust white balance and contrast | Very dark pixels may contain too little signal, so brightening exposes noise rather than new detail |
| Colored speckles in dark sky | Color noise | Color-noise reduction at 100% | Too much reduction causes color bleeding and mottling |
| Fine monochrome grain | Luminance noise | Moderate luminance reduction | Strong smoothing smears stars and texture |
| Stars stretched into short lines | Aurora motion, camera shake or star trailing | Only a restrained tonal edit and selective sharpening may improve appearance | Lost point detail cannot be reconstructed |
| Stars enlarged and soft in every direction | Missed focus | Limited edge-contrast improvement | Sharpening cannot create true focus |
| Halos around trees or stars after editing | Excessive sharpening, clarity or dehaze | Reduce amount or radius; expand the mask | Once artifacts dominate, return to the original copy and rebuild gently |
Choosing an editor for this job
The important capabilities are RAW support for your camera, separate luminance and color noise controls, sharpening with edge masking, and local adjustments that can exclude the sky. Choose the application you already understand if it provides those controls; changing software cannot compensate for motion blur.
| Option | What the documented guidance covers | What to verify for your file | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lightroom Classic | Adobe documents 1:1 inspection, luminance and color noise controls, sharpening amount, radius and masking. | RAW profile support for your camera and whether your edition includes the local masking tools you need. | Readers who want an integrated RAW workflow with detailed noise and sharpening controls. |
| RawTherapee | The Aurora Handbook lists it as a free alternative for aurora processing. | Confirm support for your camera’s RAW format and the location of its noise and masking controls. | Readers seeking a no-cost RAW editor. |
| darktable | The Aurora Handbook lists it as another free alternative. | Confirm the modules and local masks available in your installed version. | Readers comfortable with a modular, non-destructive workflow. |
Feature names and layouts can change between versions. The workflow remains the same: inspect, set tone, reduce noise, sharpen selectively and compare at the intended output size.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Preventing blur on your next aurora shoot
Editing cannot change the shutter speed, focus distance or camera movement recorded in an existing file. For a sharper new capture, address those variables before pressing the shutter.
Stabilize the camera
Use a sturdy tripod and a remote or cable release to reduce shake. Avoid touching the camera during the exposure. These accessories help prevent movement; they do not repair an already missed focus or a fast-moving aurora in an existing frame.

Focus deliberately
Set focus manually and verify it with a practice image of a star. The Canadian Space Agency specifically advises taking a practice photo of the stars with a digital camera and reviewing it to check focus. Do not assume that autofocus will remain accurate in a dark scene.

Choose exposure for aurora speed, not brightness alone
Published guidance differs because conditions, lenses and cameras differ. Treat the figures below as starting ranges, not a universal recipe.
| Guidance | Aperture | ISO | Shutter guidance | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Canadian Space Agency (2022) | Low f-number | 400 or 800 | 10–25 seconds as guidance to prevent star trails | Longer exposures brighten the frame but can make a fast aurora fuzzy; use a sturdy tripod and remote or cable release. |
| Canon U.S.A. guidance | About f/2.8 as a starting point | About 1600 as a starting point | Up to a lens-dependent maximum such as 20 seconds; shorten to 5–10 seconds or less when motion requires it | Check the RGB histogram for clipped channels and do not judge exposure by the LCD alone. |
| Nikon guidance | f/1.2–f/2.8 starting range | 1600–6400 starting range | 2–20 seconds starting range; shorten for fast movement | Use manual focus in Live View on a bright star, record RAW and consider slight underexposure to protect highlights. |
Match the shutter to movement
When the aurora is slow and faint, a longer exposure can gather more light. When bands are moving quickly, shorten the shutter even if that means raising ISO or accepting a darker foreground. Review a test frame immediately: if stars are points but the aurora’s structure is smeared, the aurora—not the tripod—is moving too much for that exposure.
Balance foreground and sky priorities
A bright foreground may need less exposure than a faint sky, while a rapidly changing display favors preserving sharp aurora structure. Decide whether your priority is a clean landscape, defined rays or visible stars, then adjust shutter, aperture and ISO within your camera and lens limits. None of these settings can be changed retroactively in an already captured photograph.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTroubleshooting common editing mistakes
The image becomes brighter but not more detailed
That usually means the shadow areas contained little usable signal. Reduce the exposure lift, keep the brightest aurora tones below clipping and accept that a new capture may be necessary. Noise reduction can improve appearance, but it cannot invent texture.
The sky looks plastic
Back off luminance noise reduction, inspect at 100%, and preserve a small amount of natural grain. If color flecks are the main problem, use color reduction rather than adding more luminance smoothing.
Sharpening creates halos
Lower the amount and radius, increase masking or apply sharpening only to foreground edges. A broad, heavily sharpened sky usually looks worse than a slightly soft but natural sky.
The aurora has doubled edges or streaks
Those marks are consistent with movement or shake. Keep a restrained edit for the memory, but do not present sharpening as a restoration. The reliable solution is another exposure with better support or a shorter shutter.
A JPEG falls apart during adjustment
Return to the least-compressed original available, make smaller tonal changes and avoid repeated exports. A phone JPEG can still produce a pleasing result at a modest display size, but RAW gives more room for highlight, shadow and color-noise decisions.
Quick Recap
A practical decision rule
- If stars and foreground edges are crisp but hidden, edit exposure, shadows and noise.
- If detail is visible but grainy, reduce luminance and color noise independently, then sharpen selectively.
- If stars trail, edges double or the whole frame is out of focus, limit editing to a natural tonal treatment and plan a new capture.
- Judge the final result both at 100% and at the size where it will actually be viewed.
