How to Import Chrome Bookmarks, Passwords, and Settings Into Another Browser

The safest migration is a two-part process: first check whether the new browser can read your Chrome profile directly; if it cannot, export bookmarks as an HTML file and move passwords with the destination browser’s supported CSV workflow. “Settings” is not a complete profile clone—each importer offers its own categories, and extensions, payment data, and preferences may be unavailable.

Use a computer for the migration, verify the imported data in the new browser, and delete any password CSV immediately after the import.

What transfers—and what does not

Browser import tools copy selected data types rather than every file in a Chrome profile. Depending on the source, destination, operating system, and browser version, the available choices can include bookmarks, browsing history, saved passwords, homepage settings, search engines, extensions that have matching versions, and form autofill.

The importer itself is the authority for your particular setup. Read every checkbox before confirming, because a browser may offer history and bookmarks but omit extensions, payment methods, open tabs, cookies, themes, per-site permissions, or other profile preferences. A successful import therefore means “the selected categories were copied,” not “Chrome was duplicated.”

  • Usually easiest: direct import from a detected Chrome profile.
  • Reliable fallback for bookmarks: Chrome’s HTML bookmark export.
  • Password fallback: a CSV file, if the destination documents CSV import.
  • Always required: review the destination and remove password-export files.

Prepare both browsers before moving anything

1. Update and close what you do not need

Install current updates for Chrome and the destination browser, then close extra Chrome windows. An importer can only offer data it can read from the selected Chrome profile. If you use more than one Chrome profile, note which profile contains the bookmarks and passwords you want; selecting the wrong profile is a common reason an import appears empty.

2. Open the destination’s import screen first

On the computer, open the new browser’s settings and search for Import browser data, Import data, or Migration. See whether Chrome is listed as a source. If it is, the importer will normally let you select categories such as bookmarks, history, passwords, extensions, or autofill.

Choose only what you intend to move. If the browser offers a direct Chrome-profile import, use that route for the categories it supports; it avoids creating intermediate files. If Chrome is not listed, or a needed category is missing, use the HTML and CSV fallbacks below.

3. Plan for duplicate data

Importing twice can create duplicate bookmarks or repeated history entries. Before retrying, check whether the first attempt actually placed data in a folder such as Other bookmarks or Imported. If you need a clean result, remove the partial import or use a new browser profile before running the migration again.

Use direct Chrome-profile import when it is offered

  1. Open the destination browser’s settings and select its browser-data import command.
  2. Choose Google Chrome as the source and select the Chrome profile containing your data.
  3. Review the category list. Select only the items you want, such as bookmarks, saved passwords, history, extensions, or form autofill.
  4. Start the import and wait for the completion message. Do not delete Chrome data until you have verified the result.
  5. Open the destination’s bookmarks manager, password manager, and history page to confirm that the expected categories arrived.

Category names and availability vary. One browser may import a homepage or search engines while another does not; an extension can be offered only when a compatible version exists in the destination’s extension system. Payment information is especially inconsistent and may be unavailable even when passwords import successfully.

Export Chrome bookmarks to an HTML file

Chrome’s documented fallback for bookmarks is an HTML file that another browser can read.

  1. In Chrome, open the Bookmark Manager. You can reach it from the bookmarks menu or Chrome’s bookmark-management page.
  2. In Bookmark Manager, open the More menu (the three-dot menu).
  3. Choose Export Bookmarks and save the resulting HTML file to a location you can find, such as your computer’s Documents folder.
  4. In the destination browser, open its bookmark manager and choose Import bookmarks or Import from HTML.
  5. Select the exported HTML file and complete the wizard.
  6. Open the destination’s bookmark folders and search for several known entries. Chrome’s own guidance notes that imported bookmarks may be placed in an Other bookmarks folder; other browsers may use a folder named Imported or a similar label.

An HTML export contains bookmark links and folder structure, not Chrome passwords, browsing history, extensions, or general preferences. Keep the file only as long as needed if it contains private or work-related links, and remove it afterward when your organization’s retention rules allow.

Move saved passwords safely

Password migration has a different path from bookmark migration. Start with the destination browser’s direct Chrome importer. If that route is unavailable or limited by your operating system, use the destination’s documented CSV workflow.

Direct password import

When the destination lists Chrome as a source and includes saved passwords as a category, select it during the import. The browser may ask you to unlock the computer, enter your operating-system credential, or confirm access to Chrome’s protected data. Those prompts are security checks, not signs that your passwords are being sent to a third party.

CSV import and the required columns

A CSV is a plain-text spreadsheet. Google’s computer instructions for password import specify a first row containing the column names url, username, and password. A destination browser that supports CSV may require those exact names or may display a mapping screen; follow its current labels rather than guessing.

Google documents a limit of 3,000 passwords per CSV import and says a Google Account can store up to 10,000 passwords. These are product limits for Google’s password service, not a promise that every browser accepts the same number. If your file exceeds a destination’s limit, split it only according to that browser’s instructions and keep track of which portions have already been imported.

Exporting from Chrome when the destination requires CSV

Chrome’s password manager includes an export command. Because labels can change, open Chrome’s password manager, locate the export option, confirm the computer’s security prompt, and save the CSV only to a private local location. Do not put it in a shared folder, cloud-synced directory, email attachment, or removable drive that other people can access.

Importing the CSV

  1. Open the destination browser’s password manager and find Import passwords or its migration wizard.
  2. Select the CSV option if the browser offers one.
  3. Choose the file, check the detected columns, and start the import.
  4. Open several imported entries and test sign-in on the corresponding websites. Some sites may require a fresh sign-in or additional verification after moving browsers.
  5. Delete the CSV from its original folder and empty the computer’s trash or recycle bin when appropriate.

Google’s warning is explicit: “If you don’t delete your password file, anyone who uses the device can open the file and access your passwords.” Treat the file as exposed credentials until deletion is complete. A CSV is not encrypted merely because it has a .csv extension.

Microsoft Edge on Windows 10 and Windows 11

Microsoft’s documented menu for Windows 10 and Windows 11 is Settings > Profiles > Import browser data.

  1. Open Edge and choose Settings and more, then Settings.
  2. Open Profiles and select Import browser data.
  3. Choose Google Chrome as the source, select the Chrome profile, and choose the categories to import.
  4. Confirm the import, then inspect Favorites and the password manager.

Edge also accepts favorites (bookmarks) from an HTML file and passwords from a CSV file. Microsoft says imported favorites are placed in a folder on the Favorites bar, potentially named Imported; imported passwords are added to Edge’s saved passwords. These menu names and locations are cited for Windows 10 and Windows 11, not as a guarantee for Edge on mobile or macOS.

Mozilla Firefox

Firefox provides two entry points: Settings > General > Import browser data, or the Import Wizard opened through the Bookmarks Library. Select the Chrome profile and then the categories Firefox offers.

Mozilla lists examples including bookmarks, saved passwords, browsing history, extensions that match Firefox versions, and form autofill. Its documented limitations matter:

  • On Windows and Linux, automatic password import from Chrome is unavailable; use a CSV through Firefox’s migration wizard when prompted.
  • Payment-method import from Chrome on Windows is no longer supported because of changes in Chrome’s encryption mechanism.
  • The interface guidance was being updated for Firefox 139 in English locales and Firefox 140 in all locales. If your labels differ, use the current Import browser data screen rather than following an older screenshot.

After the wizard finishes, inspect Firefox’s bookmarks sidebar, saved-logins page, history, and extensions page separately. A matching extension is not guaranteed simply because the Chrome extension was selected.

Safari and other destinations

Exact Chrome-to-Safari categories and menu steps depend on the operating system and Safari release. The available documentation here does not verify a current Apple procedure, so do not assume that a Chrome HTML file or password CSV will be accepted by every Safari setup. Open Safari’s current import help on the device you are using and follow the categories it explicitly supports. If Safari does not provide a password-import route, do not rename or edit a CSV to force it; use a supported, documented migration method.

What “settings” can mean in an import dialog

Chrome describes possible import data such as browsing history, homepage, bookmarks, search engines, and saved passwords. The destination may expose only a subset. “Settings” in the title should therefore be read as settings categories the importer makes available, not a complete copy of Chrome’s profile.

Data type What to expect How to verify
Bookmarks Usually available through direct import or an HTML file; folder placement may change. Open the bookmark manager and inspect folders and several links.
Saved passwords May import directly, or require CSV; platform restrictions apply. Check the destination password manager and test selected sign-ins.
Browsing history Often offered by direct import, but retention and date display can differ. Search for a few known pages in History.
Extensions Only extensions with a compatible destination version may be offered. Review the extensions page and reinstall missing items from the destination’s official store.
Form autofill May be selectable; field formats can differ. Use a non-sensitive form and confirm suggestions are appropriate.
Payment methods Not universally transferable; Firefox documents a Windows limitation. Review payment settings manually and add methods only through the destination’s secure interface.
Homepage, search engines, and other preferences May appear as optional categories, but no importer promises every preference. Open the destination’s settings and compare the few preferences that matter to you.

Verification checklist after migration

  • Open the bookmarks manager and confirm folder structure, important links, and any shared-work bookmarks.
  • Search history for entries from more than one date.
  • Open the password manager and verify that the number and domains look plausible; test a few accounts without exposing passwords to anyone else.
  • Check extensions individually. Confirm that permissions and signed-in states are what you expect.
  • Review homepage, default search engine, autofill, downloads, and privacy settings manually.
  • Look for imported folders such as Other bookmarks or Imported before repeating an import.
  • Delete any password CSV and clear the recycle bin or trash.
  • Keep Chrome installed until the new browser works for your essential sites. Remove the old browser only after you have another recovery path for your data.

Troubleshooting common failures

The destination cannot see Chrome

Confirm that Chrome is installed for the same computer user account, that the desired profile contains the data, and that Chrome is closed. If the browser still does not list Chrome, use the bookmark HTML export and the destination’s documented password route instead of copying profile folders manually.

Bookmarks imported but seem missing

Search the destination’s bookmark manager, including Other bookmarks, Imported, and any folder named after Chrome. The import may preserve links while changing their top-level location. If the HTML file was opened or edited in a spreadsheet, export it again from Chrome; changing the file structure can make it unreadable.

Passwords are absent or the CSV is rejected

Check the destination’s supported format and required column names. Make sure the first row contains the expected headers and that the file is the original Chrome export, not a spreadsheet re-saved with altered delimiters or formatting. On Firefox for Windows or Linux, use the CSV migration route because automatic Chrome-password import is not available there. On a browser without documented CSV support, do not improvise; choose its direct importer or an officially supported method.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Only some settings appeared

This is normally a category limitation rather than data loss. Compare the import screen’s available choices with the settings you expected, then configure missing preferences manually. Extensions and payment details are the most likely categories to require separate work.

The import created duplicates

Stop repeating the wizard. Identify the folder or entries created by the first run, remove the duplicate set if the destination allows it, and run one controlled import with only the missing categories selected. Keep a copy of the original Chrome bookmark export until the final arrangement is correct.

Choosing the right migration route

Your situation Preferred route Reason
Destination lists Chrome and all needed categories Direct profile import Fewer intermediate files and category selection in one wizard.
Bookmarks are supported but direct import is not Chrome HTML export, then bookmark-file import Chrome’s documented cross-browser fallback.
Passwords are supported only through CSV Chrome password export, destination CSV import Works when platform restrictions block automatic password migration.
Firefox on Windows or Linux Firefox importer for general data; CSV for Chrome passwords Mozilla documents automatic Chrome-password import as unavailable on these platforms.
Safari or a browser with unclear support Check the current vendor documentation first Categories and steps vary by operating system and release.

A complete, low-risk migration sequence

  1. Write down the Chrome profile and the destination browser profile you intend to use.
  2. Open the destination’s import settings and record which categories it offers.
  3. Run one direct import for the categories that are supported.
  4. Verify bookmarks, history, passwords, extensions, and autofill in their respective managers.
  5. Export bookmarks to HTML only if bookmarks were not imported or if the destination requires a file.
  6. Export passwords to CSV only if the destination requires it, store the file privately, and import it without editing.
  7. Test important accounts and links, then configure unsupported preferences manually.
  8. Delete the password CSV and empty the recycle bin or trash.
  9. Keep Chrome available until the destination is confirmed as your working browser and you have a separate backup or recovery method.

This sequence preserves the useful parts of a Chrome profile while making the limits visible: bookmarks have a portable HTML fallback, passwords require a destination-supported secure path, and “settings” transfer only where the importer explicitly provides a category.
