ArchiveBox reads the URLs in the export and adds them to the collection; it does not save the export file as a web page.
1. Export your bookmarks from Chrome
- On your computer, open Chrome’s More → Bookmarks and lists → Bookmark Manager.
- In Bookmark Manager, open More → Export Bookmarks.
- Save the resulting HTML file somewhere accessible to the machine or container running ArchiveBox. Chrome’s export is an HTML file, as described in Google Chrome Help.
2. Add the exported bookmarks to ArchiveBox
Run the command from your initialized ArchiveBox data directory, substituting the path where you saved the file:
archivebox add < /path/to/bookmarks.htmlFor example, if the file is in your Downloads directory:
archivebox add < ~/Downloads/bookmarks.htmlArchiveBox documents this input pattern in its usage guide. The command parses links in the HTML and adds those URLs to the collection.

Using a different working directory
If your ArchiveBox installation supports it, use its documented --chdir option to point the CLI at the collection directory. The important part is that the command targets the initialized collection rather than an unrelated directory.
Using Docker Compose
ArchiveBox also documents running CLI commands through Docker Compose. A typical pattern is:

docker compose run --rm -T archivebox add < bookmarks.htmlRun this where the Compose configuration and bookmark file are available, and check your Compose setup to confirm the file path and collection mounts. The exact working directory and service configuration can vary between installations. See the ArchiveBox project documentation for its Docker and CLI context.
What ArchiveBox imports—and what it does not
- It imports the bookmarked URLs. The HTML export acts as an input list. ArchiveBox processes URLs inside it; it does not archive the export document itself as a web page.
- Adding a URL is not a guarantee of a successful snapshot. ArchiveBox attempts to save the destinations, but a site may be unavailable or may not be fully preserved.
- Chrome history is a separate workflow. ArchiveBox’s usage guide describes a script that exports Chrome history to JSON for import. You do not need that process for a bookmarks HTML file.
Check the imported collection
After the add command and any archiving tasks have run, review the collection in ArchiveBox’s web interface or generated index. The project describes the result as a browsable collection of saved URL snapshots; whether a particular destination was captured successfully depends on that site and the archiving run.

Optional: import through the browser extension
The official ArchiveBox browser extension and its Chrome Web Store listing describe browser-oriented bulk import of bookmarks and history. This can suit people who prefer an in-browser workflow to exporting a file and using a terminal. Check the extension’s compatibility with your installed ArchiveBox version before relying on it; the HTML-export-and-CLI method above is the documented manual path.
