Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe safest way to switch browsers is to start in the browser you plan to use: open its built-in import tool, select the old browser, and choose the categories to copy. If the old browser is not detected, export bookmarks as an HTML file and import that file. Passwords often require a separate CSV export, especially when moving from Chrome to Firefox on Windows or Linux. Keep any password CSV private and delete it after you have verified the imported logins.
Importing is normally additive: the documented flows select data and add it to the destination profile rather than instructing you to erase the old browser. Google’s Chrome Help describes the goal as switching browsers without losing settings and bookmarks for favorite websites. Exact categories and menu labels depend on the browser, operating system, and version.

Choose the migration route before you start
There are three practical routes. Use the first one that supports the data you need, and fall back to the next route only for categories the direct import cannot handle.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →| Route | Best for | What to expect | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct browser import | Moving several categories in one operation | The destination browser detects the old browser, then lets you select available data such as bookmarks, history, passwords, homepage, search engines, extensions, or autofill. | Detection and categories vary by browser, operating system, and version. |
| Bookmarks through HTML | Bookmarks or favorites when direct detection fails | Export an HTML bookmark file from the old browser and select that file in the destination browser. | HTML carries bookmarks, not saved passwords or every browser preference. |
| Passwords through CSV | Saved logins when a direct password transfer is unavailable | Export a password CSV from the old browser, then use the destination browser’s password-import flow. | The CSV contains sensitive login data and must be handled like a credential backup. |
Do not assume that a route available on one operating system also exists on another. Mozilla’s current Chrome-to-Firefox guidance specifically says automatic Chrome password import is no longer available on Windows and points users toward a CSV migration; its guidance also identifies limitations on Linux. Microsoft documents a CSV password path for Edge. Those platform qualifications are more important than the browser names alone.

Prepare both browser profiles
Save anything that is still open
If important pages are open as tabs, save them before importing. Mozilla recommends saving open Chrome tabs into a bookmark folder when switching to Firefox. In any browser, select the tabs you need, add them to a clearly named folder such as Migration, and then include bookmarks in the import. This prevents a tab that was never saved as a bookmark from being overlooked.
Decide which destination profile should receive the data
Open the destination browser’s intended user profile before starting. A work profile and a personal profile can have separate bookmarks, passwords, and settings; importing into the wrong one can look like a failed migration even when the operation succeeded. If the browser asks you to sign in or choose a profile, make that choice before selecting the source browser.
Keep the old browser available until verification is complete
Do not uninstall the old browser or delete its profile while you are still checking the transfer. The support instructions describe selecting and adding data; they do not tell you to erase the source. Retaining the original profile gives you a way to repeat an export if a folder, login, or setting is missing.

Expect a system-password prompt
Firefox’s import flow may ask for the operating-system password. This is a normal permission check when the browser reads protected data. Use the account password requested by the operating system, not necessarily the password for a website or for the browser account.
Use the destination browser’s built-in import tool first
Built-in import is the quickest route because it can move more than bookmarks in one pass. The destination browser determines which source browsers and categories it can read. Read the selection screen rather than assuming every category will be present.
Firefox as the destination
- Open Firefox Settings.
- Open the Import Browser Data section.
- Select Import Data.
- Choose the old browser from the source list.
- Select the categories offered for that source, such as bookmarks, saved passwords, history, extensions, or form autofill data.
- Complete the permission prompt if Firefox requests the system password, then let the import finish.
These labels and available categories are documented in Mozilla’s Import data from another browser help. Mozilla’s Switch from Chrome to Firefox guide adds a Chrome-specific warning: on Windows, automatic Chrome password import is no longer available, so use the CSV procedure described below; Linux has additional limitations.

Edge as the destination
Edge’s documented import area is under Settings > Profiles > Import browser data. For sources and categories that Edge recognizes, choose the source browser and the data types offered by the import screen. The same Microsoft documentation also provides a separate password-CSV route, which is useful when a direct password option is absent.
Microsoft’s current instructions for favorites and passwords are in Import your favorites and passwords in Microsoft Edge. The article explains where imported favorites and passwords appear, but the exact source list can change with Edge releases and operating systems.
Chrome as the destination
Chrome’s import documentation lists possible categories including browsing history, the default homepage, bookmarks, default search engines, and saved passwords. Which categories appear depends on the source browser and the environment. Open Chrome’s import-bookmarks-and-settings command from its bookmarks or settings area, select the old browser when it is listed, and review the checkboxes before confirming.
Google’s complete category and compatibility notes are in Import Chrome bookmarks & settings. If Chrome does not detect the source, use the HTML bookmark fallback and a separate password export instead of repeatedly retrying a route the browser does not offer.
Move bookmarks with an HTML file when direct import is unavailable
HTML is the most portable bookmark format in this workflow. It preserves bookmark names, addresses, and folder structure well enough for Chrome, Firefox, and Edge to import it. It does not contain saved passwords, browsing history, extensions, or browser preferences.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Export from the old browser
- Open the old browser’s bookmark or favorites manager.
- Choose its Export bookmarks or Export favorites command and select HTML as the format.
- Save the file in a private, recognizable location, such as a temporary folder on your computer.
- Do not edit the HTML in a word processor; changing its structure can make folders or links unreadable.
In Chrome, the Bookmark Manager includes an export-to-HTML command. Google documents that workflow in Import Chrome bookmarks & settings, which covers both exporting and importing bookmark files.

Import into Firefox
In Firefox, open Settings > Import Browser Data > Import Data. If the Import Wizard does not list the old browser, choose the option to import from an HTML file, select the exported file, and complete the wizard. Mozilla explicitly documents HTML as the fallback when a browser is not available in the source list. The same fallback is described in Import data from another browser.
Import into Edge
Use Edge’s import-browser-data controls and select the option for favorites or bookmarks from an HTML file. After the import, Edge places the favorites in a folder on the Favorites bar; Microsoft says that folder may be named Imported. If you do not see the links in the top-level bar, expand the Favorites bar and open that imported folder rather than exporting the file again.
Prevent accidental duplicates
Before importing an HTML file, look at the destination’s existing bookmark folders. If you already performed a partial import, importing the same file again can create a second copy of many folders. Choose one clean source file, import it once, and then move or merge folders in the destination’s bookmark manager.
Transfer saved passwords with special care
Passwords are harder to migrate than bookmarks because browsers protect them with operating-system credentials and because import support changes by platform. A password CSV is readable data, not an encrypted vault. Anyone who obtains it may be able to use the listed accounts.
Chrome to Firefox: use the documented CSV path when required
Mozilla’s current Chrome-to-Firefox instructions say that automatic Chrome password import is no longer available on Windows. The documented alternative is to export passwords from Chrome as a CSV, then use Firefox’s migration or import flow to bring that file into the Firefox profile. Mozilla’s guide also flags limitations on Linux, so do not expect the Windows procedure to behave identically there.
- In the old browser’s password manager, choose its export command and create a password CSV.
- Save the file in a private local location that is not synchronized or publicly shared.
- In Firefox, open Settings > Import Browser Data > Import Data and follow the password-file or migration option offered by your release.
- Complete any operating-system permission prompt.
- After the import, test several important logins before disposing of the CSV.
Mozilla’s platform caveats and the migration sequence are covered in Switch from Chrome to Firefox and Import bookmarks and other data from Google Chrome. If your Firefox build does not show a password-file option, follow the current controls displayed in its Import Browser Data section rather than forcing a CSV through an unrelated bookmark importer.

Import a password CSV into Edge
Edge documents this exact path:
- Open Settings > Profiles > Import browser data.
- Choose Other import locations.
- Select Import passwords now.
- Choose the Passwords CSV file exported from the old browser.
- Finish the import and open Edge’s saved-passwords list to confirm that entries were added.
Microsoft says imported passwords are added to Edge’s saved passwords. The complete route is in Import your favorites and passwords in Microsoft Edge.
Handle the CSV as a temporary credential file
- Keep it on a private local drive with access restricted to your account.
- Do not email it, upload it to a file-sharing service, paste it into a chat, or leave it in a synchronized folder unless you deliberately accept that exposure.
- Do not open it in a spreadsheet application that may create an additional copy or upload it automatically.
- After checking critical logins in the destination, remove the CSV from the computer and empty the operating system’s trash or recycle area.
- If the file was copied to a backup, removable drive, or cloud folder, remove those copies too.
Vendor help pages explain how to export and import the file but do not define one universal secure-deletion procedure. The practical rule is to minimize how long the CSV exists and how many copies are made.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Know which settings and data can move
“Settings” is not one universal package. The destination browser offers a category list, and that list is the authoritative answer for your specific source, operating system, and version.
| Data type | What the documented support material says | What to verify afterward |
|---|---|---|
| Bookmarks or favorites | Supported through direct import in documented browser flows and through HTML fallback in Chrome, Firefox, and Edge. | Folder names, bookmark addresses, and placement on the Favorites bar or bookmarks toolbar. |
| Saved passwords | May be offered by direct import; CSV is a documented route for Edge and for the current Chrome-to-Firefox caveat. | Several high-value logins, including whether the destination recognizes the correct username. |
| Browsing history | Listed by Chrome as a possible import category and by Firefox as an example of data it can import. | Search history and visited-page history over the period you need. |
| Homepage and search engines | Chrome lists the default homepage and default search engines among possible imported settings. | Open a new tab, check the startup page, and run a test search to confirm the expected provider. |
| Extensions | Firefox lists extensions among example categories; support is source- and version-dependent. | Review which extensions are present and whether each one needs separate sign-in or permission approval. |
| Form autofill | Firefox lists form autofill data among example categories. | Test a non-sensitive form field and confirm that the right profile contains the data. |
Do not treat an unchecked category as an error. A browser may omit it because the source does not expose that data, because the operating system blocks access, or because that release does not support importing it.
Verify the destination before retiring the old profile
Run a deliberate check instead of assuming that a successful progress message means every item arrived.
- Check the bookmark tree. Expand the imported folders, open several important links, and look for a folder named Imported or a similarly labeled container.
- Check the browser start behavior. Confirm the homepage and startup setting, then open a new tab to see whether the intended layout appears.
- Check search. Run a search from the address bar and verify the default search engine.
- Check passwords without exposing them. Test a handful of essential accounts by signing in normally. You do not need to print or copy the passwords to validate that the destination can use them.
- Check history and autofill if selected. Search for a known older page and test a harmless form field.
- Review extensions separately. Confirm that expected extensions are installed, enabled, and signed in. Imported extension entries may still require their own setup.
- Keep the source until the checks pass. Only after the destination contains what you need should you remove the old browser or its profile.
Troubleshoot by symptom
The old browser is not listed
Confirm that you opened the destination browser’s import tool, not the old browser’s export screen. If the source still does not appear, use HTML for bookmarks. Firefox explicitly supports this fallback when its Import Wizard does not list a browser. For passwords, look for the destination’s CSV option; if none exists, the browser may not support importing that source on your platform.
Best Value
Bookmarks imported but are hard to find
Open the bookmarks manager or Favorites bar and inspect folders instead of looking only at the toolbar’s top level. Edge says HTML-imported favorites may be placed in a folder named Imported. A nested folder can also retain the old browser’s original structure.
Only some categories appeared
Return to the import screen and read the category list for that source. Chrome, Firefox, and Edge do not promise the same set of categories for every browser or operating system. A missing option is usually a compatibility boundary, not evidence that the bookmark file or profile is damaged. Move bookmarks with HTML and passwords with the documented CSV path when those separate routes are available.
Firefox asks for a system password
Enter the operating-system account password requested by the permission dialog. If the dialog is for a different user account, cancel and sign in to the intended desktop account before repeating the import. This prompt protects access to stored browser data; it is not the website password you are migrating.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Chrome passwords do not import automatically into Firefox
On Windows, this is an expected limitation in Mozilla’s current guidance. Export a Chrome password CSV and use Firefox’s supported migration flow. Mozilla also notes Linux limitations, so check the options shown by your Linux Firefox installation rather than assuming the Windows route is available.
A password import appears successful but a login fails
Check the entry in the destination’s saved-password manager for the correct website address and username, then test the login again. Some sites use more than one related address, and a browser may store each address as a separate entry. Keep the old browser and the original export available until essential accounts work, but do not leave a password CSV exposed longer than necessary.
Platform and version boundaries
The instructions here focus on the current Chrome, Firefox, and Edge support material. Menu wording, source detection, and import categories can change as browsers release new versions. Firefox’s Chrome-password behavior is explicitly platform-sensitive, with Windows and Linux called out separately. Chrome’s category list is also conditional on the source browser and environment.
Before starting a migration on a different browser or operating system, open that browser’s current help page and confirm that it supports the data type you intend to move. Do not infer that a procedure documented for Chrome, Firefox, or Edge applies unchanged to another browser. If a browser offers no direct route, the HTML bookmark fallback is usually the least complicated option for bookmarks; password migration must follow the destination’s own security and file-import rules.

A compact decision checklist
- Need bookmarks, history, and other categories together? Start with the destination browser’s built-in import.
- Source browser missing from the list? Export bookmarks as HTML and import the file.
- Moving Chrome passwords to Firefox on Windows or Linux? Plan for a CSV route rather than automatic import.
- Importing passwords into Edge? Use Settings > Profiles > Import browser data > Other import locations > Import passwords now.
- Have a password CSV? Keep it private, test critical logins, then remove every copy.
- Finished importing? Check folders, links, logins, homepage, search engine, history, autofill, and extensions before deleting the old profile.
