The word “settings” needs a qualification: Mozilla’s Edge-specific documentation lists the data above, but does not promise that general browser preferences—such as startup pages, appearance choices, search preferences, extensions, or privacy settings—will be copied. Treat this as a supported data import, not a complete Edge-profile clone.

What Firefox can import from Edge
Firefox’s Edge importer is designed for the information most people need when changing browsers. Mozilla lists four transferable categories:

Mozilla does not state that the wizard transfers every Edge preference. Browser extensions, themes, startup configuration, search-engine choices, permissions, privacy controls, and other profile-level settings should therefore be considered manual configuration unless Firefox explicitly shows a corresponding import option.

The procedure below describes the current general Firefox desktop workflow. Mozilla’s cited instructions do not specify one Firefox version or operating system, so button placement and wording can vary slightly between releases and platforms.
Before you start
- Install and open the desktop version of Firefox on the computer that contains the Edge profile you want to read.
- Keep Microsoft Edge installed and make sure the intended Edge profile exists on that computer. If Edge has several profiles, the importer will ask you to choose one.
- Decide which categories you actually want. You can import only bookmarks, only passwords, or any combination offered by the wizard.
- Be ready to authenticate with the computer’s system password. Firefox may request it while reading Edge’s protected login data.
- If a work or school computer restricts access to browser data, the import may be limited by that account’s permissions.
Firefox does not silently synchronize another browser’s credentials. Mozilla’s general guidance explains that login data from another browser remains in that browser until you deliberately choose an import operation. That deliberate choice is what starts the transfer.
Method 1: Use Firefox Settings
This is the primary route because it handles all of the Edge categories supported by Mozilla’s Edge-specific importer.
- Open Firefox Settings. Select the Firefox menu button, then choose Settings.
- Open the browser-data importer. In Settings, find the browser-data section and select Import Data. In some Firefox layouts the control may be grouped with import or migration options rather than shown as a large standalone button.
- Select Microsoft Edge. When Firefox displays the list of source browsers, choose Microsoft Edge. If Edge is listed more than once because of profiles, continue to the profile-selection step.
- Choose the Edge profile. Select the profile that contains the Favorites, passwords, history, and form data you want. Selecting the wrong profile can make the import appear incomplete even though the wizard worked correctly.
- Select categories. Tick the data types you want to bring into Firefox: bookmarks/Favorites, saved logins and passwords, browsing history, and saved form history. Leave a category unselected if you do not want it copied.
- Start the transfer. Select Import. Firefox reads the selected data from Edge and places it in the corresponding Firefox locations.
- Finish the wizard. Select Done after Firefox reports completion. Keep Firefox open while you check the imported information.
Why Firefox may ask for a system password
Saved passwords are protected by the operating system and by the source browser. During import, Firefox may display a system-password prompt before it can read Edge’s stored logins. This is a normal authorization step, not a request to create a new Firefox password. Enter the computer account password requested by the prompt, then allow the wizard to continue.
If you do not authorize the prompt, Firefox may be unable to import passwords even when bookmarks or history import successfully. You can rerun the wizard later and select only the categories that you are permitted to read.

Method 2: Start from the Bookmarks Library
The Bookmarks Library opens the same general import wizard from a different starting point. This route is useful when your immediate priority is moving Favorites, or when you cannot find Import Data in Settings.
- Open Firefox’s bookmarks management window by choosing Bookmarks > Manage bookmarks.
- In the Library window, open Import and Backup.
- Choose Import Data from Another Browser.
- Select Microsoft Edge, then choose the Edge profile and categories presented by the wizard.
- Select Import, authorize the system-password prompt if Firefox displays one, and select Done.
The two entry points do not represent two different migration engines. Settings’ Import Data control and the Bookmarks Library’s Import and Backup > Import Data from Another Browser command both lead to Firefox’s browser-import process.

Menu-bar alternative
Firefox also provides a menu-bar route in Mozilla’s instructions. Press Alt to show the classic menu bar temporarily, then choose File > Import from Another Browser. Menu-bar visibility and exact labels vary by Firefox version and operating system, so use either of the two routes above if this command is absent.
Where imported Favorites appear
Edge calls its bookmarks “Favorites.” Firefox normally keeps imported Favorites together in a folder in the bookmarks area rather than scattering them through your existing folders. Check both the Bookmarks Toolbar and the Bookmarks menu for the imported folder.
If you do not see the toolbar, open Firefox’s bookmarks controls and inspect the full bookmarks list. The imported folder may be present in the Library even when the toolbar itself is hidden. Moving individual bookmarks afterward is a separate organization task and does not change the original Edge data.

What “settings” does—and does not—mean here
The title of this guide uses “settings” because Firefox’s import controls are part of its browser-data migration tools. However, the Edge-specific support information does not promise a wholesale transfer of Edge preferences. The supported list is bookmarks, saved logins and passwords, browsing history, and saved form history.

- Home-page and new-tab choices
- Theme, toolbar, and appearance preferences
- Default search engine and search shortcuts
- Installed extensions and their individual options
- Site permissions, notification rules, and privacy controls
- Startup behavior and pinned tabs
Do not interpret the absence of these items in the import summary as an error. They are outside the categories Mozilla lists for the Edge importer.
If Microsoft Edge is not listed
Firefox can only use the direct wizard when it detects a supported source browser and profile. If Edge does not appear in the source-browser list, use a file-based fallback for the specific type of data you need rather than treating a file as a complete profile migration.
Fallback for bookmarks: export an HTML file from Edge
- In Edge, export the Favorites you want to move as an HTML bookmarks file using Edge’s bookmark-management tools.
- In Firefox, open Bookmarks > Manage bookmarks.
- Choose Import and Backup, then select the command for importing bookmarks from an HTML file.
- Browse to the exported file, select it, and confirm the import.
The HTML method is for bookmarks. It does not carry Edge passwords, browsing history, form history, extensions, or general preferences with it. After import, look in the bookmarks area for the folder Firefox created and verify that the expected folders and links are present.

Fallback for passwords: use a CSV file
Mozilla separately documents importing login and password information from a CSV file through Firefox’s password-import workflow. A CSV is a credential file, not a general browser-profile format.
- Export the required Edge login records to a CSV file using Edge’s password-management controls, if your Edge installation permits that export.
- Protect the exported file while it exists. A CSV normally contains readable login information, so do not leave it in a shared folder or upload it to an unrelated service.
- In Firefox, open the login-and-password import workflow and choose the CSV-file option shown by your version of Firefox.
- Select the exported file and complete any operating-system authorization prompt.
- Open Firefox’s saved-logins list and check several imported entries.
Use the CSV route only for login data. It does not import Favorites or history, and it does not reproduce Edge preferences. Remove the temporary CSV after confirming that the credentials you need are present and that you no longer require the file.

Do not assume that a completion message means every category you expected was available in the selected Edge profile. Check each category separately.
Verify bookmarks
- Open the Bookmarks Toolbar and Bookmarks menu.
- Find the folder created for imported Edge Favorites.
- Open several links, especially items from nested folders, to confirm that the structure and destinations are intact.
Verify passwords
- Open Firefox’s saved-logins and passwords section.
- Search for a few sites that you know were saved in the selected Edge profile.
- Confirm that the expected usernames are present. Test a login only on the legitimate site associated with that credential.
Verify history and form data
- Open Firefox history and search for pages you visited recently in Edge.
- Use a familiar web form to determine whether the saved form-history entries you selected are available.
If one category is missing while another succeeded, rerun the importer with the missing category selected. A successful bookmark transfer does not prove that password authorization completed, and a password prompt can be declined independently of the other categories.
Troubleshooting by symptom
Edge is not in the list
Confirm that you are using Firefox’s desktop import controls and that Edge is installed on the same computer. If Firefox still cannot detect it, export bookmarks to HTML and use the bookmark-file fallback. For passwords, use the documented CSV workflow. These fallbacks move the specified data types but do not recreate a full Edge profile.
The wrong Favorites or passwords appear
Edge profiles keep separate browser data. Return to the importer and choose the intended Edge profile before selecting categories. If the desired profile is not offered, the direct wizard cannot select it from that screen; use the appropriate file export from the profile that contains the data.
Bookmarks imported, but passwords did not
Password records are protected separately from bookmarks. Run the import again with saved logins and passwords selected, and complete the system-password prompt when requested. If authorization is unavailable, use the CSV password-import route if Edge allows a CSV export.
The import controls have different names
Firefox’s interface changes between versions and platforms. Look for the functions rather than relying on one exact screen: Settings > Import Data, the Bookmarks Library’s Import and Backup menu, or the temporary menu-bar command File > Import from Another Browser.
The imported folder is not on the toolbar
Check the full Bookmarks menu and the Bookmarks Library. Firefox can place imported Favorites in a folder that is available in the bookmarks system even when the toolbar is hidden or already crowded.
You expected extensions or preferences to move
That expectation exceeds the categories Mozilla lists for Edge import. Recreate unsupported preferences manually in Firefox and install any required extensions from Firefox’s own add-on system after reviewing each extension’s permissions.

Privacy and cleanup after migration
Choose categories deliberately, particularly on a shared computer. Importing passwords creates readable credential records inside the destination browser’s local profile, just as Edge stored the source records locally. If you use an exported HTML or CSV file, treat that file as temporary migration material: keep access restricted while it exists and delete it after verification when it is no longer needed.
Because Firefox does not automatically save or synchronize another browser’s login data, the transfer happens only when you start the importer or select a password file. This gives you a chance to leave sensitive credentials in Edge if you do not want them in Firefox.
