How to Import and Export Decklists in MTG Arena

To import a decklist into MTG Arena, copy a simplified list to your computer clipboard, open Decks, choose IMPORT in the lower-left corner, and accept the confirmation. The imported deck appears in your collection, normally as “Imported Deck.” You can rename and edit it, then craft missing cards with wildcards.

Exporting is less straightforward. Wizards of the Coast has documented an in-game Add to Decks option for Draft and Sealed event decks, but that February 2020 description is event-specific and dated. A current, official step-by-step procedure for copying an ordinary constructed deck out of Arena is not established in the Wizards documentation, so this guide separates the documented Limited workflow from the unresolved constructed-deck path.

How do I import a decklist into MTG Arena?

Arena’s official import process starts outside the game client. The list must be copied as plain, simplified decklist text before you open the import control.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Copy the decklist. In any program that displays the list in a simplified format, select the complete decklist and copy it to your computer’s clipboard. Wizards’ getting-started guide describes this as, “Copy the desired decklist into your computer’s clipboard.” Include the card quantities and names; a list that was not actually copied is the most common reason the import fails.
  2. Open MTG Arena and sign in. Wait until the main menu is available.
  3. Open the Decks tab. This is the deck-collection screen where your existing decks are shown.
  4. Choose IMPORT. The button is in the lower-left area of the Decks screen.
  5. Accept the success confirmation. When Arena recognizes the clipboard contents, confirm the message to finish importing. If Arena reports an error, copy the decklist again and repeat the process; the official support guidance specifically points to an improperly copied list as the cause to check first.
  6. Locate the new deck. The official getting-started guide says the default name is “Imported Deck.” Select it and choose Edit Deck if you want to rename it, inspect its contents, or adjust it for a format.

Importing creates a deck entry; it does not grant cards or guarantee that the list is legal for the queue you intend to play. Those are separate checks performed in the deck editor and format filters.

Before you press IMPORT

Prepare the list first so you can tell whether a problem comes from the source text or from Arena. Use a selectable text view rather than a screenshot, and make sure the quantities and card names are visible. Wizards describes the source broadly as any program that displays the deck in a simplified format, so the key requirement is the text on your computer clipboard, not a particular website or deck-building service.

Select the whole list in one operation when possible. If you copy only part of it, leave a browser page or editor with unrelated text on the clipboard, or switch between several lists before importing, Arena may not recognize the intended contents. A clean retry starts by returning to the source, selecting the complete list again, copying it, and then going straight to Decks and IMPORT.

Keep the original text until you have confirmed that the deck appears. That gives you a reference if the imported version needs corrections, substitutions, or a second attempt.

What decklist format does Arena accept?

Arena expects a simplified text list containing quantities followed by card names. The list can come from any program that presents deck information in that form. The essential part is that the complete text is placed on the clipboard before you press IMPORT.

A minimal card-list example

Deck
24 Mountain
4 Shock

Each line in the example begins with a quantity and then the card name. Your actual list can contain many more cards and sections, but preserve the card names and quantities exactly as displayed by the source.

How to avoid a failed parse

  • Copy the entire list, not only a card name or a screenshot.
  • Use selectable text rather than an image or formatted table that does not copy as text.
  • Make sure the clipboard still contains the decklist when you switch to Arena.
  • If an error appears, return to the source, select the full list again, copy it, and retry the import from Decks.

Arena’s support instructions do not promise that every third-party formatting variation will parse. When a list repeatedly fails, simplify it to quantity-and-name lines and try again.

Can I name a deck when importing it?

Yes. Wizards announced on February 19, 2024, that deck names can be included in imported deck files through an optional About section. The naming block comes before the card list and uses a Name line.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The About section and its name are optional. Files without that section continue to import, and Arena uses its normal default label, “Imported Deck,” when no name is supplied. After import, you can still rename the deck from the deck-editing screen.

The example’s order matters: the About block appears first, the name follows the word Name, and the card list begins under Deck. If you do not need a custom label, omit the entire optional block and use the ordinary card-list format.

What happens when I do not own all the cards?

A successful import does not add cards to your collection. In the deck editor, cards you do not own are highlighted so you can identify the gap between the imported list and your collection.

Review the missing cards

Open the imported deck and select Edit Deck. The highlighted entries show which cards are unavailable. Check the format at the same time: a card may be present in your collection yet unusable in the selected format, while another may be missing entirely.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Craft with wildcards

Wizards’ guide explains that missing cards can be crafted with available wildcards. Use the individual craft controls for selected cards or the Craft All control described in the guide when you want to create every missing card that your wildcard balance permits. Crafting consumes wildcards, so review the complete missing-card list before confirming.

If you do not want to spend wildcards

  • Leave the missing cards uncrafted and use the deck as a reference.
  • Replace unavailable cards with cards you own while editing.
  • Save a separate version so the original imported list remains intact for future upgrades.

The import operation itself does not certify that the deck is playable. Collection ownership, wildcard availability, format legality, and deck construction rules are handled after the list is created.

How do I check whether an imported deck is legal?

Use Arena’s deck editor and format selection after importing. Wizards notes that format selection affects which decks appear as legal. A deck may therefore disappear from a format-specific view even though it was imported successfully.

Check the intended format

  1. Open the imported deck from the Decks collection.
  2. Enter Edit Deck.
  3. Select the format you plan to play, if the editor presents a format choice.
  4. Review any legality warnings and adjust the list only after confirming the intended queue or event.

Do not treat a successful import message as a legality verdict. It confirms that Arena read the list, not that every card, count, or set is permitted in your chosen format.

How do I export a deck from MTG Arena?

The answer depends on the type of deck. Wizards has an official export-like workflow for decks built in Limited events, but the current general procedure for exporting an ordinary constructed deck or copying it to the clipboard is not established by the official material for this guide.

Documented Limited-event method: Draft and Sealed

In a February 7, 2020 State of the Game announcement, Wizards wrote, “We’ve also added the option to easily export your decks from Limited events, be they Draft or Sealed.” The described control is an Add to Decks button above the deck box. Selecting it adds the event decklist to your other decks.

  1. Enter the relevant Draft or Sealed event deck screen.
  2. Look above the deck box for Add to Decks.
  3. Select the button to add that Limited decklist to your deck collection.
  4. Open the resulting deck from Decks and edit or rename it as needed.

This is a dated, event-specific description. It should not be read as proof that the same button exists for every constructed deck, every platform, or every current client version.

Constructed-deck export: what is and is not confirmed

The official Wizards and Arena materials explain clipboard import and the older Limited-event Add to Decks feature, but do not provide a current, universal sequence for exporting an ordinary constructed deck to the clipboard or to a text file. Because of that gap, there is no verified button name or location to publish as a general constructed-export instruction.

If you need to move a constructed list out of Arena, inspect the controls shown by your current client and consult current official support information. Do not assume that the Limited-event button is available in the constructed deck editor, and do not treat an external tracker or an undocumented shortcut as an official Arena export method.

This distinction is important when preserving a list for another device or sharing it with another player. The documented Limited command transfers the event deck into your Arena deck collection; it is not described as a universal text-file or clipboard export. A constructed deck can therefore be copied out only through a method that your current client and current official guidance actually confirm.

How do I copy a decklist in Arena?

For importing into Arena, the clipboard direction is clear: copy the list from another program, then use Decks → IMPORT. For copying a constructed decklist out of Arena, the current official procedure is unresolved in the Wizards documentation.

The distinction matters because “copy a decklist” can mean two different operations:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Use case Starting point Documented destination Evidence status
Import a list into Arena Simplified text on the computer clipboard A new deck in the Arena deck collection, normally named “Imported Deck” Supported by current official import guidance
Move a Limited event deck into your decks A Draft or Sealed event deck screen Your other Arena decks through Add to Decks Described by Wizards on February 7, 2020; event-specific and dated
Export an ordinary constructed deck to text or clipboard An existing constructed deck Not stated in current official material Procedure unresolved; verify the controls in your client

Keeping these cases separate prevents a common mistake: assuming that a documented Limited-event transfer is a universal constructed-deck export command.

Import troubleshooting

“Import” produces an error

Copy the list again from its source, making sure the complete simplified text is selected. Return to Decks, choose IMPORT, and retry. Wizards’ support article specifically says an error appears when the list was not properly copied.

The deck imported but I cannot find it

Look through the deck collection for the default name “Imported Deck.” If you imported more than one list without renaming them, several entries may have the same label. Open each candidate and rename it immediately to make future identification easier.

The list imported with missing cards

That is expected when the list contains cards outside your collection. Open Edit Deck, review the highlighted cards, and decide whether to craft them with wildcards, use Craft All, or substitute cards you already own.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The deck is not available for my format

Set the intended format in the deck editor and check legality there. Arena’s format selection controls which decks appear as legal; an imported list can exist in your collection without being valid for the queue you selected.

The deck name did not import

Check that the optional block uses the structure shown by Wizards: an About line, a Name line containing the deck name, then the Deck section. If you omit the block or use a different structure, Arena can still import the cards and assign “Imported Deck.” You can rename the deck after importing.

I used the Limited button but cannot find a text file

The February 2020 description says Add to Decks adds the Draft or Sealed decklist to your other Arena decks. It does not describe saving a text file or placing text on the system clipboard. Open the Decks collection and look for the transferred deck instead.

Import versus Limited-event transfer: which method should I use?

Choose the method based on where the list currently lives.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Use clipboard import when you have decklist text in another program or service and want a new deck entry in Arena.
  • Use Add to Decks when you are working with a Draft or Sealed event deck and the current event screen provides that documented control.
  • Do not substitute one for the other. The first is a current import workflow; the second is a February 2020 Limited-event feature. Neither establishes a universal constructed-export procedure.

A reliable workflow for moving a deck into Arena

  1. Prepare a simplified list with quantities and card names.
  2. Add the optional About/Name block if you want a custom name at import.
  3. Copy the complete text to the computer clipboard.
  4. Open Arena, select Decks, then choose IMPORT in the lower-left corner.
  5. Confirm the success message, or recopy the list if an error appears.
  6. Find the deck under “Imported Deck” or its supplied name.
  7. Open Edit Deck, select the intended format, and inspect legality.
  8. Review highlighted missing cards and craft only the cards you actually want to spend wildcards on.
  9. Select Done after editing to save the deck.

This sequence handles the part of the process that Wizards documents consistently: bringing a simplified list into the client and preparing it for your collection and format.

What the official evidence does not establish

There is no verified current claim here that every Arena deck has a one-click “Export” control, that a constructed deck can always be copied to the system clipboard, or that the Limited-event Add to Decks button appears in constructed deck editing. Client interfaces can change, and the Wizards documentation does not settle those points.

For that reason, treat any constructed-export instructions you encounter as version- and tool-specific unless they are confirmed by current official Arena documentation. The documented, dependable path remains clipboard import; the documented outbound transfer is the older Draft and Sealed event option.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I import a decklist into MTG Arena?

Copy the complete simplified decklist to your computer clipboard. In Arena, open Decks, select IMPORT in the lower-left corner, and accept the success message. Find the resulting deck, usually named “Imported Deck,” in your deck collection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I name a deck when importing it?

Yes. Wizards’ February 19, 2024 announcement supports an optional About section followed by a Name line, then the Deck section. Files without that block still import and receive the default “Imported Deck” name.

What if I do not own every card in an imported deck?

Open the deck in Edit Deck. Cards missing from your collection are highlighted. You can craft selected cards with wildcards, use the documented Craft All control, leave them uncrafted, or substitute cards you own.

Why did Arena show an import error?

The official support guidance says to check whether the list was properly copied. Return to the source, select the complete simplified text again, copy it to the clipboard, and retry Decks → IMPORT.

How do I export a deck from MTG Arena?

Wizards documented an Add to Decks control for Draft and Sealed event decks in its February 7, 2020 State of the Game announcement. A current universal procedure for exporting an ordinary constructed deck to text or the clipboard is not established in the official documentation, so verify your current client rather than assuming a button path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a successful import mean the deck is legal?

No. Import confirms that Arena read the list. Collection ownership, wildcard availability, format selection, card legality, and deck-construction rules are checked separately in the deck editor.

Where does a Limited event deck go after I select Add to Decks?

The 2020 Wizards description says the Draft or Sealed decklist is added to your other Arena decks. Open the Decks collection to find it, then edit or rename it as needed.

Can I use the Limited Add to Decks control for constructed decks?

Do not assume so. Wizards’ description is explicitly for Limited events—Draft and Sealed—and does not establish that the same control exists in constructed deck editing or on every current client version.

The Bottom Line

Import: copy a simplified list to your computer clipboard, open Decks, choose IMPORT, and confirm. Rename the resulting deck, check its format, and review highlighted missing cards before crafting. Export: Wizards documented Add to Decks for Draft and Sealed events on February 7, 2020, but a current universal constructed-deck export procedure is not confirmed by official documentation.
