There is no documented, reliable way to import an Adobe Illustrator (.ai) file into IllustratorMagic Pro while retaining its Illustrator layer structure. IllustratorMagic Pro is presented as a browser-based AI generator for illustrated storybooks, comics and coloring books, with PDF export. Its published materials do not document an AI-file import command, supported Illustrator input formats or a layer-mapping workflow.
If you still need to send artwork to another service, keep the original .ai file as the authoritative editable master. Use a PDF or SVG only as a compatibility copy, and enable Preserve Illustrator Editing Capabilities when that option is available. Treat any resulting import into IllustratorMagic Pro as unverified until the vendor confirms which layers, text objects, vectors and effects it can actually preserve.

What you can—and cannot—assume about IllustratorMagic Pro
The central issue is not an export setting; it is the destination’s documented capability. IllustratorMagic Pro’s product information describes a browser-based generator for finished illustrated books and PDF output. It does not publish instructions for opening .ai files, importing Illustrator documents, mapping Illustrator layers or editing imported vectors.

Adobe describes .ai as Illustrator’s native vector format. Native formats preserve Illustrator data, including multiple artboards, more reliably than interchange formats. Adobe also states that PDF and SVG preserve all Illustrator data only when Preserve Illustrator Editing Capabilities is selected. Even then, a third-party application may read only the visible artwork or a subset of the embedded data.
Why a successful-looking import can still lose layers
Native Illustrator data and rendered appearance are different things
An Illustrator document contains more than the pixels or curves visible on the canvas. It can include named layers and sublayers, artboards, live text, appearance attributes, symbols, linked images, clipping masks, transparency, blends and effects. A service can reproduce the appearance of a page while discarding the structures that made those objects editable.
When a destination treats a PDF as a finished page, it may receive one rendered representation rather than separate Illustrator objects. The same can happen with an SVG if unsupported effects, fonts or linked assets are converted during import.
PDF layers are not automatically Illustrator layers
PDF files can contain optional content groups that appear as layers in some PDF viewers. Those groups are not equivalent to Illustrator’s layer and sublayer model. Adobe’s guidance explains that an AI file saved with PDF compatibility retains an Illustrator portion that Illustrator can use when reopening the file. A PDF saved without Illustrator editing capabilities does not provide that same recovery path.
Therefore, seeing layer names in a PDF viewer—or seeing a single page after upload—does not establish that Illustrator layers remain editable in IllustratorMagic Pro.

Protect the editable source before making any copy
- Keep an untouched original. Duplicate the source .ai file before exporting. Store the original in a location that will not be overwritten by conversions or uploads.
- Use Illustrator’s native format for the master. In Illustrator, choose File > Save As or File > Save a Copy, and retain Illustrator (.AI) format for the working master.
- Record document dependencies. Note linked images, fonts, placed PDFs, external files, artboards and any effects that may not travel through an interchange format. This inventory gives you something concrete to check after an import.
- Save a versioned checkpoint. Before changing text to outlines, flattening transparency or expanding effects, save a separate copy. Those operations can remove editability from the copy even though the artwork still looks correct.
The .ai file remains the authoritative recovery file. If a downstream conversion fails, you can return to it instead of trying to reconstruct layers from a flattened upload.
Choose the format according to the editability you need

The table separates two questions that are often confused: whether Illustrator can recover its own data from a file, and whether IllustratorMagic Pro can interpret that data. The first can be improved with the preservation option; the second is not established by the available product documentation.

Safest step-by-step workflow for testing an import
1. Create the protected master and a test copy
Start with the untouched .ai master. Make a clearly named test copy, such as a versioned export copy, so that any outlining, expansion or conversion is isolated from the source.
2. Check what must remain editable
Write down the specific objects that matter: layer names, sublayers, artboards, live text, clipping masks, gradients, transparency, symbols, placed images and effects. A vague visual comparison will not reveal whether those structures survived.
3. Export a PDF only when the service requires it
- In Illustrator, use the PDF save or export workflow from the test copy.
- In the PDF options, select Preserve Illustrator Editing Capabilities.
- Keep the resulting PDF separate from the .ai master and label it as a compatibility copy.
- Reopen the PDF in Illustrator on a duplicate, if appropriate, to verify that Illustrator can recover the expected data. This check tests the file’s Illustrator compatibility, not IllustratorMagic Pro’s importer.
If the option is not selected, the PDF may contain only the information needed to display the page. Do not rely on a PDF viewer’s layer panel as evidence that Illustrator’s original hierarchy is intact.

4. Export SVG only after confirming it is an accepted input
If the destination specifically requests SVG, use Illustrator’s SVG export settings and select the available Illustrator editing-preservation option. Inspect the copy for font substitutions, expanded appearances, missing linked images and changed effects. SVG is not a universal container for every Illustrator feature.

Before sending a complete book or a complex illustration, test one file containing the structures you need to preserve. Include at least one named layer, a nested sublayer, live text, a clipping mask and a visible effect if those features are important to your project.
6. Inspect the result rather than judging only the preview
Look for a layer or object panel, editable text controls, separate selectable objects and any documented export or re-edit command. If IllustratorMagic Pro presents only a page preview or generated-book workflow, that is evidence of a finished-artwork pipeline, not an Illustrator document editor.
7. Compare against your checklist
- Are the original layer and sublayer names present?
- Can you select and move one object without moving the rest?
- Can you edit a text object as text rather than as outlines or pixels?
- Are artboards, crop boundaries and page order correct?
- Do transparency, masks, gradients and effects look and behave as expected?
- Are linked images and fonts present, substituted or missing?
8. Stop before committing production files
If the test produces one flattened page, altered text or missing objects, do not upload the production set on the assumption that a larger file will behave differently. Preserve the .ai master and ask IllustratorMagic support for an explicit statement of supported input formats and layer behavior.
How to troubleshoot the common “one flattened layer” result
The upload is rejected
A rejected .ai file is consistent with the absence of a documented AI importer. Try only a format that IllustratorMagic Pro explicitly lists in its current instructions. If no import list is available, request confirmation from support rather than guessing between PDF, SVG and image files.

The PDF opens as one page or one layer
First check whether Preserve Illustrator Editing Capabilities was enabled when the PDF was created. If it was not, return to the .ai master and create a new compatibility copy. If it was enabled and IllustratorMagic Pro still shows one rendered page, the destination may be reading the PDF’s appearance rather than its embedded Illustrator data. The preservation setting cannot force an application to implement an Illustrator layer importer.
Text is no longer editable
Live text can change when fonts are unavailable or when a destination converts text to outlines or a rendered image. Keep the original live-text version in the .ai master. Do not outline the master merely to make a compatibility copy; outline only a separately saved version when the destination’s requirements justify that trade-off.
Effects or transparency look different
Some Illustrator effects depend on Illustrator’s appearance engine, linked assets or a particular color and transparency workflow. Compare the test copy with the original at the same size and background. If appearance is critical but editability is not, a rendered proof may be the more predictable deliverable; if editability is critical, keep the work in .ai and use the destination only after it confirms support.
Artboards or page order are missing
Native Illustrator data is the safest way to retain multiple artboards. A PDF or SVG workflow can present pages according to its own import rules. Verify the artboard count and order in a small test before converting an entire document.
Questions to ask IllustratorMagic support
Because the published product information does not settle the import question, ask for answers that can be tested rather than a general promise that files are “supported.”
- Does IllustratorMagic Pro accept .ai files directly? If so, which Illustrator versions and file features are supported?
- Does it parse Illustrator layers and sublayers, or does it rasterize each uploaded page?
- Are live text, clipping masks, symbols, transparency and effects editable after import?
- Does it accept PDF or SVG files with Illustrator editing capabilities preserved?
- What happens to multiple artboards, linked images and missing fonts?
- Can the service export a layered, editable file, or only a finished PDF?
- Is there a sample file or current help article showing the import and layer workflow?
Requesting a current, import-specific answer matters because a product’s generation and PDF-export features do not by themselves establish support for Illustrator document ingestion.
When IllustratorMagic Pro is the wrong tool for this particular job
If your objective is to generate a finished illustrated storybook, comic or coloring book in a browser, IllustratorMagic Pro’s documented workflow may fit that goal. If your objective is to continue editing an existing Illustrator document by layer, the available documentation does not show that it functions as an Illustrator-compatible layer editor.
Use Illustrator for the editable master and treat IllustratorMagic Pro as a separate production destination only when its accepted inputs and output behavior meet your requirements. If the service can use only rendered pages, supply those pages deliberately and retain the layered .ai source for every future revision.

- Original .ai file is backed up and unchanged.
- A separate test copy was used for every export or conversion.
- Required layers, sublayers, artboards and text objects are listed.
- PDF or SVG preservation options were enabled when that format was required.
- Fonts, linked images and effects were checked for portability.
- A representative test file was uploaded before the full project.
- The result was inspected for object selection, text editing and layer structure—not just visual appearance.
- IllustratorMagic support has confirmed the exact import and layer behavior if editability is a project requirement.
Until those checks pass, there is no defensible promise that an Adobe Illustrator file will arrive in IllustratorMagic Pro with its layers intact. The practical safeguard is simple: keep the native .ai master, use preserved PDF or SVG only as a testable compatibility copy, and regard any unconfirmed import as potentially flattened.
