To run a debounced function immediately on the first call, invoke it synchronously when no debounce timer is active, then start the timer. Calls during that window can reset the timer; whether the latest call also runs when the window ends is a separate leading-versus-trailing policy choice.
Run the first call on the leading edge
“Immediate” means calling the function directly inside the wrapper—not scheduling it with setTimeout, even with a delay of zero. This leading-only implementation runs the first call in each window and suppresses later calls until the window closes:

}The timeout ID lives in the wrapper’s closure, so each debounced function has its own window. On the first call, the wrapper invokes fn with the original receiver and arguments, then schedules the window’s end. Subsequent calls clear and restart the timer but do not invoke fn.
Choose whether to run a trailing call
Debouncing groups calls that arrive close together. The leading edge is the beginning of the window; the trailing edge is after calls have stopped for the specified wait. MDN notes that a debounced function can run on the leading edge, the trailing edge, or both, depending on the use case (MDN’s debounce glossary).

- Trailing only: run once after calls stop, using the latest call. This is common for search suggestions while someone is typing.
- Leading only: run the first call immediately and suppress calls during the window, as in the example above.
- Leading and trailing: run the first call immediately, then run the latest call after the quiet period if there were repeated calls during the window.
For leading-plus-trailing behavior, save each call’s arguments and receiver, then use the saved values for the trailing invocation. Clear those references when the window ends. Be precise about the policy: for example, Lodash documents that when both options are enabled, the trailing invocation happens only if the debounced function was called more than once during the wait period (Lodash documentation).
Implement leading and trailing behavior deliberately
A common source of bugs is treating “leading” as merely an option to the timer callback. The first call must still execute directly. The timer manages the window and, if requested, a later trailing call; it must not be responsible for the immediate invocation.

For a reusable implementation, track whether another call arrived during the active window and make the trailing rule explicit. On each call, retain the latest arguments and this value if trailing execution is enabled, clear the old timeout, and schedule a new one. When the timeout expires, invoke the saved call only if the chosen policy requires it, then clear the saved references.
Do not copy a short illustrative implementation into a production utility without deciding how it should behave when callbacks are reentrant, when callers need cancellation or flushing, and what value the wrapper should return. Those are API decisions, not automatic consequences of leading-edge timing.

Account for timer scheduling
setTimeout schedules an asynchronous callback; its delay is not an exact execution time. The browser may run the callback later than the requested wait, and clearTimeout cancels a pending timeout. See MDN’s documentation for setTimeout() and clearTimeout(). Consequently, the first call is synchronous, but the end of the debounce window should be understood as a scheduling target rather than a guaranteed wall-clock instant.
When to use a library instead
Lodash _.debounce documents leading and trailing options, maxWait, .cancel(), and .flush(); it also specifies that the wrapped function receives the last supplied arguments and that later wrapper calls return the result of the last invocation. Underscore documents an immediate option for leading-edge execution and a cancellation method. Check the API for the version installed in your project before relying on version-specific behavior (Lodash; Underscore.js).

If work must happen periodically while events continue, consider throttling instead. Debouncing waits for a quiet interval; throttling enforces a rate limit, as MDN explains in its debounce glossary.
