How to Implement BDD Testing for Test Automation

Implement BDD by discovering behavior with the team, recording concrete examples as readable specifications, and automating them incrementally with tools such as Cucumber.

Implement behavior-driven development (BDD) by agreeing on concrete examples of how software should behave, writing those examples as shared specifications, and automating them incrementally. A test runner such as Cucumber can execute Gherkin scenarios, but installing a tool or writing Given/When/Then steps alone does not make a team’s process BDD.

What BDD implementation involves

BDD connects product understanding, software development, and automated checks. The team clarifies a behavior through examples, records the examples in a form both people and automation can use, then uses the checks to guide implementation. Cucumber describes this as collaborative, iterative work that also creates automatically checked documentation: Cucumber’s BDD guide.

The practical starting point is not a framework decision. It is a small piece of upcoming work whose expected behavior the team needs to understand. A useful question to keep in view is the one Cucumber’s BDD page attributes to Fred Brooks: “The hardest single part of building a software system is deciding precisely what to build.”

Follow an example-driven workflow

  1. Discover behavior together

Choose a small user story and discuss real examples with product or business, testing, and development perspectives represented. Clarify the user problem, what is in scope, edge cases, and technical questions. Cucumber calls the broader practices Discovery, Formulation, and Automation; its guidance on discovery emphasizes finding examples and gaps in understanding.

    • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
    • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Example Mapping and Event Storming are two collaborative analysis techniques Cucumber names for discovering examples: Cucumber’s BDD guide.

  2. Formulate examples as specifications

Record the agreed examples in a format that is readable by the team and executable by automation. With Cucumber, this is commonly a Gherkin .feature file stored in source control alongside the software. A feature groups scenarios; each scenario describes one concrete example. See Cucumber’s Gherkin reference.

    Feature: Account access

Scenario: A valid customer signs in
        Given a registered customer
When the customer signs in with valid credentials
Then the account overview is available

This is an illustrative shape, not a test of a particular product. The steps say what is true, what happens, and what outcome matters. Gherkin also supports And and But to continue a sequence, as well as arguments and data tables for passing values to step definitions: Gherkin reference.

  3. Automate one useful example

Connect each Gherkin step to a step definition: code that performs the required action against the system under test or checks the resulting behavior. Run the scenario, use its failure to guide implementation, and repeat as the behavior takes shape. Cucumber’s introduction explains the feature-file and step-definition workflow; the API documentation covers step definitions.

  4. Return to discovery when an example raises a question

If a scenario depends on an unanswered product decision, do not turn a guess into an automated rule. Take the question back to the people shaping the behavior, revise the example, and keep the specification aligned with the team’s current understanding. BDD is iterative, rather than a one-time requirements handoff: Cucumber’s BDD guide.

Write scenarios people can understand and maintain

Describe behavior, not a script of interface actions

Prefer a statement such as “When Bob logs in” to a list of implementation details such as opening a particular URL, locating a specific field, and pressing a button. Put interaction mechanics in step definitions and supporting automation code. This keeps the specification focused on behavior and less tied to a particular interface: Cucumber’s guidance on better Gherkin.

Keep each example focused

A scenario should make one behavior and its outcome clear, so a failure has an intelligible reason. Avoid combining unrelated behavior or asserting implementation details that can change without changing what users need. Cucumber recommends keeping examples to around three to five steps, while noting that a scenario can have as many steps as necessary. If one becomes long, check whether it has lost expressive power or is combining behaviors: Cucumber’s Gherkin guidance.

Reuse code without obscuring meaning

Step definitions and supporting automation can share reusable code. But reusable plumbing should not turn business-readable examples into opaque scripts or overly general steps whose failure meaning is hard to understand. Treat readability and clear diagnosis as practical design tests for both the scenario language and its code mapping.

Bring the right perspectives into the work

Cucumber’s “Three Amigos” framing brings product-owner, tester, and developer perspectives together to explore scope, edge cases, and execution constraints. It does not require exactly three people or a single meeting. Early in adoption, have the whole team shape its Gherkin language. Later, a developer or automation owner and tester can draft together if product or business representatives actively review the result. Details are in Cucumber’s BDD guidance.

Choose tools around the workflow

The sources here explain Cucumber and Gherkin mechanics, not a comparative test of competing BDD tools, so they do not establish a best runner for every team. Evaluate a candidate against the programming-language ecosystem you use, whether it supports readable examples and execution, how it integrates with the system under test, and whether the step-to-code mapping can remain maintainable. Gherkin and step definitions are described in the Gherkin reference and Cucumber API documentation.

Keep the tool decision subordinate to the shared behavior: a runner can execute examples, but it cannot resolve product ambiguity or create collaboration on the team’s behalf.

Or skip the browser setup

If a BDD scenario needs a browser screenshot as an artifact, a screenshot API can avoid maintaining a separate browser-capture setup. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. For example, this cURL request captures a page as WebP:

Troubleshoot a BDD rollout

  • Scenarios read like click scripts: Move URLs, selectors, and button mechanics into step definitions; rewrite the scenario around the business behavior and outcome.
  • A scenario has a disputed expected result: Pause automation and return the question to discovery with the relevant product, testing, and development perspectives.
  • Failures do not explain what broke: Narrow the scenario to one behavior, make its expected outcome explicit, and avoid combining separate rules.
  • Steps are hard to map to code: Review the wording and step definitions together. Keep the shared language meaningful rather than overly generic or coupled to incidental UI details.
  • Product review drops out after the first workshop: Keep business or product representatives actively reviewing drafts as the team’s writing process evolves.

Keep the implementation incremental

Start with one small behavior, agree on examples, automate one at a time, and let failures and unanswered questions guide the next conversation. The resulting feature files can serve as living documentation only while the team keeps them readable and aligned with the implemented behavior.
