How to Ignore an Email Conversation in Outlook (and Stop Future Replies)

Use Ignore Conversation when you want Outlook to remove an entire email thread and route every later reply to Deleted Items. In classic Outlook, select the conversation or one of its messages, choose Home > Delete > Ignore (or Message > Delete > Ignore in an open message), and confirm Ignore Conversation. This is different from turning off Conversation view, which only changes how messages are grouped on screen.

The exact command depends on whether you use classic Outlook for Windows, new Outlook, Outlook on the web, Outlook.com, Mac, iPhone, or Android. The procedures below separate deletion routing from display settings so you can choose the result you actually want.

What “Ignore Conversation” does

Outlook treats a conversation as the chain that starts with the first message and continues through responses that normally share the same subject. Ignore is a deletion-routing action for that chain. Outlook removes the current conversation from your Inbox and sends future messages that belong to it directly to Deleted Items (called the Deleted folder in some mobile interfaces).

Microsoft describes the feature as a way to delete conversations or threads you no longer need to take part in. It is useful for announcement threads, large reply-all chains, and discussions that continue after you have left the project. It is not a mute button that leaves the messages in place, and it is not a setting that merely changes the list layout.

  • Current messages: the conversation is moved out of the Inbox when you confirm Ignore.
  • Later replies: messages Outlook identifies as part of that conversation are delivered to Deleted Items automatically.
  • Scope: the rule applies to the selected conversation, not every message with a similar subject in your mailbox.
  • Recovery: you can stop ignoring while the conversation is still available in Deleted Items.

Choose the result you need

Goal Command or setting Effect on messages Where it applies Can you reverse it?
Stop seeing one thread and discard future replies Ignore Conversation Moves the existing thread to Deleted Items and routes later replies there One conversation Yes, with Stop Ignoring Conversation while it remains in Deleted Items
See each message separately in the list Do not group messages Leaves messages where they are; only the list organization changes All messages shown in that folder or mailbox view Yes, by selecting conversation grouping again
Stop ignoring a thread Stop Ignoring Conversation Moves the ignored conversation back to the Inbox and restores normal delivery for future replies One previously ignored conversation Not needed; this is the recovery action

If you still need to read the thread but dislike the collapsed display, use a view setting rather than Ignore. If the thread is genuinely irrelevant, use Ignore so that new replies do not keep arriving in your Inbox.

Classic Outlook for Windows: ignore a conversation

These steps apply to Outlook for Microsoft 365 and the perpetual Windows editions listed in Microsoft’s desktop instructions: Outlook 2024, Outlook 2021, Outlook 2019, and Outlook 2016.

From the message list

  1. Open the folder containing the thread, usually Inbox.
  2. Select the conversation. You can select the conversation row when Conversation view is enabled, or select any message that belongs to the thread.
  3. On the ribbon, choose Home > Delete > Ignore. Do not choose the ordinary Delete command if you intend to create an ignore rule for future replies.
  4. If Outlook displays a confirmation dialog, select Ignore Conversation.

The selected chain disappears from the Inbox and is placed in Deleted Items. Outlook will continue routing matching replies to Deleted Items instead of showing them as new Inbox mail.

From an open message

  1. Open any message in the conversation.
  2. On the message ribbon, choose Message > Delete > Ignore.
  3. Confirm by selecting Ignore Conversation.

The two entry points produce the same result. If you cannot see the Message tab, return to the message list and use the Home route; ribbon layouts can change when a message is opened in its own window.

What counts as the conversation

Ignore follows Outlook’s conversation grouping rather than a manually selected set of unrelated messages. Messages in the same chain generally share a subject and conversation identifiers. A new message with a changed subject, a forwarded copy, or a reply created by a system that strips conversation headers may not be treated as part of the ignored chain. If a later message still appears in your Inbox, check whether its subject or headers place it in a different conversation.

Undo Ignore in classic Outlook

You can recover an ignored thread while its messages are still in Deleted Items. Emptying that folder, deleting the messages permanently, or allowing an organizational retention policy to remove them can make recovery impossible through this command.

  1. Open Deleted Items.
  2. Select the ignored conversation or any message in it.
  3. Choose Home > Delete > Stop Ignoring Conversation.

Outlook moves the conversation back to the Inbox. Future messages that belong to the conversation are delivered to the Inbox again rather than being routed to Deleted Items. If you find only some messages, select a message that still carries the conversation grouping; an isolated message may not expose the Stop Ignoring command.

New Outlook, Outlook on the web, and Outlook.com

Microsoft’s current web-style interfaces use conversation organization controls rather than the classic Windows ribbon in many views. If your aim is only to read messages individually, change the reading-pane organization instead of deleting the thread.

Turn off grouping without deleting anything

  1. Select the Settings gear.
  2. Open Mail > Reading Pane.
  3. Under message organization, choose Do not group messages.
  4. Close Settings and return to the message list.

The list now shows individual messages. Existing mail remains in its current folder, and future replies continue to arrive normally. Depending on the interface, the alternative choices may be grouping by conversation or by conversation branches. Select the option that matches whether you want one expandable chain or separate rows.

When you need deletion routing

New Outlook and web deployments can expose Ignore through a message’s … (More actions) menu or a Delete-related command. Select the conversation or open one of its messages, open the available message-actions menu, and look for Ignore conversation. Confirm the action when prompted. If the command is absent, use the classic Outlook desktop client for the mailbox, or use the organization setting to report that the current web build does not expose the action. Do not substitute Delete unless you understand that ordinary deletion may not route later replies.

Labels can vary by release and account type. The reliable test is the outcome: Ignore should remove the chain and place subsequent matching replies in Deleted Items; a reading-pane setting should only alter grouping.

Outlook for Mac

Mac has separate view controls for conversation grouping. In legacy Outlook for Mac, choose View > Show as Conversations to turn grouping on or off. Newer Mac builds use Organize > Conversations. These commands change how the list is presented; they do not delete a thread or suppress future mail.

Mac’s conversation documentation also notes that messages in Junk E-Mail and Deleted Items are not included in conversations. That means a thread split between those folders may not appear as one expandable chain. If you are trying to recover or ignore a conversation, first check the folder containing the Inbox copy and select a message there.

For a Mac account that exposes Ignore Conversation, open the message or its More-actions menu and choose the Ignore command, then confirm. If your build does not show it, use Outlook on the web or classic Windows Outlook for the same mailbox to apply the ignore action. The server-side result should then be visible on Mac as the messages move to Deleted Items.

Outlook on iPhone and Android

In Microsoft’s mobile instructions, Ignore Conversation is available from the conversation’s … menu. The action moves the conversation and all future responses to the Deleted folder.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Outlook Mobile and open the conversation, or select it in the message list.
  2. Tap the … menu.
  3. Choose Ignore Conversation.
  4. Confirm if the app asks you to do so.

To inspect an ignored thread, open the Deleted folder. Mobile menu names and placement can differ between iOS and Android releases, so look for the conversation-level action rather than a general account setting. Mobile’s Ignore command is not the same as turning off conversation view; it changes where the thread and later replies are delivered.

Ignore versus turning off Conversation view

These two requests are often confused because both mention an “email thread.” Ignore changes message routing. Conversation view changes presentation.

Use Ignore when

  • You do not need any more messages from a particular reply-all chain.
  • You want the existing thread out of the Inbox immediately.
  • You accept that later replies will be placed in Deleted Items.
  • You may need to restore the thread later from Deleted Items.

Use a view setting when

  • You need to read, search, or retain every message.
  • You want each reply displayed as its own row.
  • You are troubleshooting why a message seems hidden inside a collapsed conversation.
  • You want the change to apply broadly to the current message list rather than one thread.

Turning off grouping does not stop notifications, remove messages, or prevent future replies. Conversely, Ignore is not a safe way to “unthread” mail because it deliberately routes messages to Deleted Items.

Common problems and fixes

The Ignore command is missing

  • Confirm that you selected a message or conversation, not an empty area of the folder.
  • In classic Outlook, check both Home > Delete and the open-message Message > Delete menu.
  • In new Outlook or web mail, open the message’s … menu and inspect More actions.
  • If the mailbox is shared or managed by an organization, policy or client version may limit available commands. Try the web interface or another Outlook client connected to the same account.

Replies still arrive in the Inbox

Verify that you ignored the correct conversation, not a similarly titled thread. A changed subject, a forwarded message, or a new conversation identifier can create a separate chain. Search Deleted Items for the original thread and check whether the new message belongs to a different conversation. If it does, apply Ignore to that separate conversation.

The thread vanished and you want it back

Open Deleted Items and select a message from the ignored chain. Choose Home > Delete > Stop Ignoring Conversation in classic Outlook. If the folder was emptied or retention removed the messages, this command cannot restore them; use your organization’s retention or backup process instead.

I only wanted separate messages

Do not use Ignore for this purpose. In new Outlook, Outlook on the web, and Outlook.com, go to Settings > Mail > Reading Pane and select Do not group messages. On Mac, use View > Show as Conversations or Organize > Conversations, depending on the version.

Some messages are not included in the chain

Conversation grouping depends on message metadata and folder location. Mac documentation specifically excludes Junk E-Mail and Deleted Items from conversations. A message in one of those folders may therefore appear separately even when its subject matches the Inbox thread. Move or locate the Inbox copy before applying a conversation command.

A safe decision checklist

  1. Identify the platform: classic Windows, new Outlook, web, Mac, iOS, or Android.
  2. Decide whether you want deletion routing or display-only grouping.
  3. For deletion routing, select one message in the exact conversation and use the platform’s Ignore Conversation command.
  4. Confirm the wording. The confirmation should refer to ignoring the conversation, not merely deleting one message.
  5. Check Deleted Items if you need to verify that the thread moved.
  6. Recover promptly with Stop Ignoring Conversation if you change your mind, before Deleted Items is emptied or purged.

What happens to notifications, rules, and retention

Ignore changes the destination of matching conversation messages; it does not erase the sender, block the sender, or unsubscribe you from a mailing list. If the same organization sends a new message with a different conversation identity, it can still appear in the Inbox. To stop all mail from a sender or list, use the appropriate block, unsubscribe, or mail-flow control separately.

Mailbox retention, auto-delete settings, legal holds, and administrator policies still govern Deleted Items. An ignored conversation is not a permanent archive. If you need a record, move or copy important messages to an approved folder before ignoring the thread, and follow your organization’s retention requirements.

Client synchronization can also make the move appear delayed. Allow the mailbox to sync, refresh the folder, and check Deleted Items from the web interface before concluding that Ignore failed. The server’s folder state is the authoritative view when multiple Outlook clients are connected.

Practical examples

Project-wide reply-all chain

You are finished with a project, but dozens of people continue replying to the original subject. Select that conversation and use Ignore. The existing chain leaves the Inbox, and later replies are routed to Deleted Items. If a new project phase starts with a genuinely new subject or conversation, treat it separately.

Newsletter or automated alert

If the sender uses a stable conversation identity and you merely want this one chain out of sight, Ignore can handle it. It does not unsubscribe you, so future campaigns that start new conversations may still arrive. Use the sender’s unsubscribe control or an appropriate mail rule when the goal is broader.

Unread messages hidden in a collapsed thread

Do not ignore the thread. Set the message organization to Do not group messages on new Outlook or the web, or turn off conversation display on Mac. You will see individual rows without moving any mail.

Key points to retain

  • Ignore Conversation removes the selected thread from the Inbox and sends future matching replies to Deleted Items.
  • Stop Ignoring Conversation restores the thread and normal delivery while the messages remain in Deleted Items.
  • Do not group messages and Mac’s conversation-view controls only change list organization.
  • Menu names differ by Outlook edition, so choose instructions for the client you are actually using.
