How to Identify Swordfish and Other Large Fish Found on the Beach

Start with anatomy, not size or the fact that the fish is on a beach. A swordfish has a long, flattened upper bill, a stout rounded body, large eyes, a broad crescent-shaped tail and a back that is darker than its underside. Adults have no scales or teeth. When the tail base is visible, NOAA’s Atlantic billfish key adds a second check: a flat upper bill and one caudal keel are consistent with swordfish, while the other billfish in that chart have a round upper bill and two caudal keels.

These clues support only a provisional identification unless the relevant parts are intact. Photograph the entire fish, its head and bill, tail base and fins from a safe distance; record the beach and nearest town; then ask a local fisheries or wildlife authority for confirmation. A beach location and a large body alone cannot establish species.

Begin with the features that actually identify a swordfish

The most useful first question is whether the fish has the sword-like upper bill that gives the species its common name. NOAA Fisheries describes swordfish as having a long, flattened bill. The bill is conspicuous when the head is intact, but it may be broken, buried or missing from a carcass, so absence of a visible bill is not proof that the fish is not a swordfish.

Long, flat upper bill

Look at the upper jaw from the side and from above without touching the carcass. A swordfish bill is flattened rather than cylindrical. The flat upper surface is the key distinction in NOAA’s Atlantic comparison chart. A bill that is rounded in cross-section points toward another billfish category in that chart, although the chart is not a universal key for every large fish that can wash ashore.

Rounded body and large eyes

The body is described as stout and rounded, and the eyes are large. These observations are useful supporting details when the fish is sufficiently intact. They should not be used alone to name a species because many large marine fish can look robust at a distance.

Broad crescent-shaped tail

A broad, crescent-shaped caudal fin is another swordfish feature. Photograph the tail from the side and from behind if you can do so without approaching an unstable carcass. If the tail has separated, retain the photograph of the tail base: the ridges there are the caudal keels used in the Atlantic key.

Darkest on top

NOAA describes swordfish coloration as darkest on top. Color fades after death, is altered by drying and may be hidden by sand or blood, so treat it as corroboration rather than a deciding test.

No scales or teeth in adults

Adult swordfish lack scales and teeth. This is a useful check when the skin and mouth are visible, but a damaged or decomposing specimen may not show either feature clearly. Do not pry open the mouth or scrape the skin to look for them.

Use the NOAA Atlantic billfish key in the right order

NOAA’s document titled Identification of Atlantic Swordfish and Billfishes (April 2019) is a visual comparison for Atlantic swordfish and billfish. It is not a global key for every large fish or every coastline. Within that stated scope, use the features in this sequence.

  1. Inspect the upper bill. A flat upper bill places the specimen on the swordfish side of the chart. A round upper bill places it among the other billfish shown.
  2. Check the caudal keels. Swordfish have a single caudal keel. The other billfish in the chart have double caudal keels. Count only the ridges you can actually see at the tail base; do not infer a count from a missing or heavily damaged tail.
  3. Use dorsal and anal fin shape and position as a follow-up. The chart uses these fins to separate the other billfish from one another after the bill and keel observations. Compare a clear photograph with the chart rather than relying on a memory of fin shape.
  4. Stop when a required feature is unavailable. If the bill, tail base and relevant fins are gone or obscured, the chart cannot support a species-level result. Record the uncertainty instead of forcing a match.

The chart’s bill-and-keel distinction is especially valuable because it combines two independent parts of the fish. A single damaged feature can mislead; matching both features is stronger than judging body length, color or overall impression.

Why size helps with context but not identification

NOAA’s North Pacific swordfish profile reports an average length of 7 feet and an average weight of 50 to 200 pounds. The same profile says swordfish can reach 14 feet and nearly 1,200 pounds. Those figures describe the species’ reported size range; they are not thresholds that separate swordfish from other large fish on a beach.

Measure NOAA figure How to use it
Average length 7 feet Context for a North Pacific swordfish profile; not an identification test.
Average weight 50–200 pounds Context only; a stranded fish may be swollen, dehydrated or partly missing.
Maximum reported size Up to 14 feet and nearly 1,200 pounds Shows the species can be very large; it does not establish that a large beach fish is a swordfish.

The profile does not state a year for these measurements. Do not turn the averages into a rule such as “a seven-foot fish is a swordfish.” A large specimen outside those figures is not automatically a different species, and a fish within them is not automatically a swordfish.

A beach location cannot identify the species

Where a carcass lies is important context, but the beach itself is not an anatomical character. The species that are locally common, the causes of strandings and the agency that accepts reports depend on the coastline and circumstances. The available NOAA comparison chart is specifically for Atlantic swordfish and billfish, while the size profile cited above is a North Pacific swordfish page. Neither source supplies a universal list of fish likely to wash up at every beach.

Use geography to choose the right authority and reference, not to replace an examination. If the fish was found outside the Atlantic region covered by the chart, say so when requesting help and avoid presenting the chart as a definitive local guide. A local fisheries, wildlife or stranding authority may have a regional key that includes species absent from the Atlantic comparison.

Examine a carcass without creating a second emergency

The available sources do not provide a standardized carcass-handling protocol or a worldwide reporting directory. The following is a cautious documentation workflow, not a substitute for local instructions.

  1. Keep your distance first. Do not handle an unknown carcass. A sword-like bill can be sharp, and a large fish can shift with waves, surf or a changing tide. Keep children and animals away.
  2. Establish the scene. Note the beach name, nearest town, date and approximate time. Include whether the fish is in the surf, above the tide line or partly buried. These observations give an authority geographic and situational context.
  3. Photograph the whole fish. Take a side view showing overall proportions and a wider image showing the surrounding beach. Avoid standing in moving water or climbing onto rocks for a better angle.
  4. Photograph the decisive anatomy. If safe, use the camera’s zoom from outside the hazard area to capture the head and upper bill, tail base, both sides of the tail and each visible fin. Include an object for scale only if placing it does not require touching the fish; a person standing well away is safer than putting a ruler beside the mouth.
  5. Record what is missing. State whether the head, bill, tail base, dorsal fin or anal fin is detached, buried or too damaged to inspect. A clear statement that a feature was unavailable prevents a reviewer from treating an unseen character as negative evidence.
  6. Contact the appropriate local authority. Send the location and original photographs to the local fisheries, wildlife or marine-stranding office you can identify. Ask which regional identification guide and reporting channel apply. No single authority or phone number is established for every beach by the sources cited here.

These steps are designed to preserve information while limiting contact. They do not establish that a carcass is safe to approach, move, cut or keep. Follow posted beach closures and any instructions from local officials.

What can and cannot be concluded from a damaged fish

Head and bill intact

An intact head allows the strongest initial observation: compare the upper bill’s shape with the Atlantic chart if the find is in that chart’s geographic scope. Add the keel and fin checks only when those parts are also visible. Use wording such as “consistent with swordfish” until a qualified local reviewer confirms the identification.

Tail base visible but head missing

A single or double caudal-keel observation can narrow the possibilities in the Atlantic billfish chart, but it cannot replace the bill check. A tail fragment without a visible bill should be reported as an incomplete comparison, not a definitive swordfish identification.

Bill visible but tail destroyed

A flat upper bill is a strong swordfish clue, yet the chart intentionally uses the keel as a second character. Photograph the bill carefully and describe the tail base as unavailable. Do not claim that the missing keel is single or double.

Only a fin or skin fragment remains

A detached fin, damaged head or partial carcass may not show the decisive clues. The Atlantic chart uses fin shape and position in relation to other features, so a loose fin cannot reliably identify the whole fish. Keep the image and location information, but seek expert assessment rather than assigning a species name.

Decomposition or scavenging has altered the body

Color, skin texture and body outline can change after death. If decomposition has removed scales, teeth, skin or fin edges, mark those observations as uncertain. A photograph taken early, before further loss of tissue, is more useful than a confident interpretation made from a later fragment.

How to describe “other large fish” without guessing

When a specimen is not a clear swordfish, describe observable characters instead of selecting a familiar name. The Atlantic chart provides a limited comparison among billfish: a round upper bill and double caudal keels point away from swordfish within that chart, and dorsal or anal fin shape and position then help separate the remaining billfish shown. It does not identify every shark, tuna, ray or other large fish that could occur on a beach.

A practical description can be specific without being overconfident: “Large fish, head partly buried; upper bill appears round; tail base not visible; two fins photographed; location and date recorded.” That statement gives an expert usable evidence while avoiding an unsupported species claim. If no bill is present, say “bill not observed” rather than “no bill.”

Common identification mistakes

  • Using length as a label. The reported averages and maximum show possible size, not a diagnostic boundary.
  • Treating every pointed snout as a swordfish bill. The relevant distinction is a long, flattened upper bill, not simply a pointed head.
  • Counting keels on the wrong part. The chart refers to caudal keels at the tail base. A fin edge, tear or shadow is not automatically a keel.
  • Applying an Atlantic chart worldwide. The document’s scope is Atlantic swordfish and billfish; a different coastline may require a different key.
  • Identifying a fragment as if it were whole. Missing anatomy means the comparison is incomplete. Record the limitation.
  • Handling the carcass for a better photograph. Unknown remains and sharp bills can pose hazards, and moving the fish destroys its original position as evidence.
  • Assuming a beach report has one national process. Reporting contacts and locally likely species are location-dependent.
  • Confusing an official source statement with a personal quotation. NOAA’s description is an agency profile, not a named individual’s testimony.

How to use NOAA’s references responsibly

NOAA Fisheries’ North Pacific Swordfish profile supplies the physical description and size context. The April 2019 Identification of Atlantic Swordfish and Billfishes chart supplies the bill, caudal-keel and fin comparison. NOAA’s Atlantic Highly Migratory Species pages provide management context and compliance materials, but an identification chart is not fishing-compliance advice. Regulations and reporting requirements can change, so anyone dealing with a live catch, possession question or fishery rule should consult the current authority for that jurisdiction.

The profile’s central description is straightforward: “Swordfish are recognized by their long, flattened bills, which resemble swords, as their name suggests.” Treat that sentence as the starting character, then check the additional anatomy and geographic scope before reaching a conclusion.

A concise decision path for a beach find

  1. Is enough of the head present to inspect the upper bill? If no, document the limitation and seek local help.
  2. Does the upper bill appear long and flat? If yes, continue; if it appears round, compare with the other billfish in the regional key rather than calling it swordfish.
  3. Can the tail base be seen? If yes, note whether the Atlantic chart’s single- versus double-keel distinction is visible. If no, leave that test unresolved.
  4. Are dorsal and anal fins sufficiently intact? Photograph their shape and position for the chart’s follow-up comparison.
  5. Does the geography match the chart? If the find is outside the Atlantic scope, label the result provisional and obtain a regional assessment.
  6. Can the conclusion be supported by more than one visible feature? If not, report observations and uncertainty rather than a species-level claim.

What to send with a request for identification

Provide original, uncompressed photographs when possible, with one image showing the whole carcass and separate images of the head, bill, tail base and fins. Include the beach or nearest town, date and approximate time, whether the fish is intact, and which parts are missing or buried. Say whether the photographs were taken from a safe distance and whether the fish was left in place. This package lets a local specialist distinguish a genuinely absent feature from one that was simply not photographed.

If an authority confirms the species, retain the confirmation with the photographs and location. If it does not, keep the description at the level the evidence supports. “Large billfish, provisional swordfish” is more accurate than a definitive name based on a single damaged part.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line for identification

Look first for the long, flattened bill. When the tail base is visible and the Atlantic chart applies, a flat upper bill paired with one caudal keel supports swordfish; round bill and double keels indicate another billfish in that comparison. Use the rounded body, large eyes, crescent tail, darker top and absence of adult scales and teeth as supporting observations. Never let size or beach location substitute for those characters, and do not identify a fragment beyond what the surviving anatomy can show.
